"The Swiss-born Gilliard arrived in Russia in 1904, aged 25, to teach French to Sergei, son of Duke George of Leuchtenberg and Princess Anastasia of Montenegro. George was a nephew of Amelia, second wife of the Brazilian Emperor Pedro I, and a cousin of Tsar Alexander III through his mother, Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna. The following year, the Duke appointed him to the imperial family, and Gilliard began to teach also to Olga and Tatiana, the eldest daughters of Nicholas. In 1909, he was dismissed by the Duke and began to devote himself only to the four girls, to whom Alexei joined in 1912. The following year, the Swiss became the tutor of the heir, responsible for everything on his education. This almost daily coexistence led the teacher to have an intimate impression of each one of the pupils. For him, Olga had a sharp mind and was witty and independent. Tatiana, tall and slender, more reserved and less spontaneous than her sister, was the most balanced and strong-willed -- in fact, her sisters called her "Governess" for her habit of giving orders. The beautiful Maria, with large bright eyes, called by her cousins "Maria's saucers," was so kind that her sisters often took advantage of her kindness. Anastasia was terrible. Cheerful, lively, with a sense of humor of her own, she was even stubborn and had a talent for acting."

Each year on feast day of St John Vladimir a particular custom occurs where Vladimir's cross is carried in front of procession of faithful. Cross is carried by members of Andrović family from Bar, Montenegro which has been guarding it for generations.
Cross is made of yew tree and encased in silver in Venice when people of Bar were converting to Islam, most likely in XVI century. Cross measures 45cm by 38cm and on the bottom it has a brass orb used for mounting on wooden staff.
When its original owners converted to Islam, cross was taken from them by rival clan of Mrkojević. When they too converted to Islam, cross was given to its current owners - the Andrović family under whose protection it has been to this very day.
Every year a religious procession is held with Vladimir's cross at the front. Cross is carried to the Church of Holy Trinity on top of mountain Rumija. Participants gather a day before in Veliki Mikulići where liturgy is held at church of St Nicholas at midnight.
Participants of the procession are also local Muslims and Catholic. Cross is ALWAYS at the front and is considered bad omen for someone to step in front of it. Participants chant "I carry the cross, i praise God, Lord have mercy". In the past, a member of Mrkojević family who was a Muslim would serve as flag-bearer (Baryaktar). He would go with flag in his right hand and a dagger in his left ready to defend the cross if someone attempted to take it away, especially its original owners.
Over years, number of Muslim participants greatly lowered due to influence of their religious and political elders.
During Socialist Yugoslavia, between 1959-1984 procession wasn't held.
According to the legend, original church of Holy Trinity was destroyed by Ottomans. According to the he other, church has crumbled because "a young man and girl made sin inside it". That's why it was a custom that those who take part in procession, take a stone and carry it to the top. It was believed that when enough stones was brought, church would rebuild itself. Current church was built in 2005 and consecrated by SOC.
Procession arrives to the top of mountain before dawn and at first sun's rays a liturgy is held. After it, people return to Veliki Mikulići where they came from. On their way back, people pick healing herbs and celebration is held.
Until next day of Holy Trinity, Vladimir's cross is held in secret location and only two male members of the family know its whereabouts.

Henry ‘Chips’ Channon: The Diaries (Vol. 1), 1918-38, entry for 14th June 1923
— Thursday 14th June Lady Mary Cambridge¹ was married to Lord Worcester² this morning. No reception followed because of court mourning.³ All the royal family, the King, the two queens, princesses, Empress of Russia,⁴ etc stood for ages in front of St Margaret’s kissing one another. Royalties in public always behave as if they were enjoying great privacy. Mary looked exceptionally lovely. The marraige is a liaison hippique⁵ and most suitable.
1. Lady Victoria Constance Mary Cambridge (née Princess Mary of Teck) (1897-1987), daughter of the Marquess of Cambridge and niece of Queen Mary.
2. Henry Hugh Arthur FitzRoy Somerset (1900-84), by courtesy Marquess of Worcester, succeeded his father as 10th Duke of Beaufort in 1924. He was acclaimed as the finest fox hunter in England of the twentieth century and, because of his long mastership of the Beaufort hunt, was universally known as ‘Master’. In his memoirs he noted that ‘obviously the hunting of the fox has been my chief concern’.
3. After the death of Princess Christian.
4. As the Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich of Russia (1856-1929), grandson of Tsar Nicholas I, had been recognised as Tsar by the Russian monarchist movement in 1922, Channon presumably refers to his wife, the former Princess Anastasia Petrović-Njegoš of Montenegro (1868-1935). They both escaped from Russia on a British battleship after the revolution. 5. An equine marriage: both bride and groom were passionate about horses and riding.

St. Stephen's Review, March 9, 1889
Astounding new reaches me this week from St. Petersburg Court circles. I am told that there is a complete misunderstanding between the Tsar and his son in consequence of the the proposed marriage of the latter with the Princess Alice of Hesse. The Tsarvitch is in love with the Princess Militza of Montenegro, whom he was accustomed to look upon as his bride. The Emperor Alexander II was well aware of this youthful inclination, but felt sure that his son would be easily persuaded to act according to the new arrangements. The unexpected firmness of the young Grand Duke upsets all plans and the greatest uneasiness prevails at the Court.
It is very easy to understand that each of the young Princesses has her party. The head of the first is supposed to be the Grand Duchess Elizabeth of Hesse, wife of Grand Duke Sergius, who wishes to see her sister become the future Empress of Russia. The beautiful and highly-gifted Grand Duchess Wladimir, the other sister-in-law of the Tsar, the most influential lady at the Russian Court, is said to favour the other Princess.
It would be difficult to say in advance which of the two fair camps will gain the victory, but never have military strategists displayed so much skill, nay genius, in a tremendous battle, than is shown just now in this marriage battle.
March 16, 1889
It appears that after all the dark, strong-featured beauty, Militza of Montenegro, is to be the future Czarina of Russia. The Czrewich insists upon marrying her, and has managed to secure the abandonment of his betrothal to Princess Alix of Hesse. Princess Militza of Montenegro is the second daughter of Prince Nicolas, and was born in 1866. So that she is the Czarewich's senior by two years. She is a handsome striking-looking girl of twenty-two, and very much resembles her father. She was educated in St. Petersburg, as also were her sisters, at the expense of the late Czar Alexander II.
Princess Militza would actually marry one of Tsarevich Nicholas's cousins, Grand Duke Peter Nikolaevich in July 1889. Nicholas would marry Alix of Hesse in 1894.

Five facts you need to know about International Women’s Day
Tumblr media
Every year on 8 March, International Women’s Day is celebrated to commemorate and honour women's accomplishments, raise awareness about gender disparities and discrimination, as well as promote global support for women.
But what do you know about IWD? We’re here to answer five important questions…
How long has International Women’s Day been celebrated?
Tumblr media
On 28 February 1909, the then-active Socialist Party of America celebrated the first National Woman’s Day in commemoration of the 15,000 women who protested in New York against harsh working conditions and lesser wages.
In 1910, Clara Zetkin, a women's rights advocate and the leader of Germany’s Women’s Office for the Social Democratic Party, proposed the idea of a global International Women’s Day.
On 19 March 1911, the first International Women’s Day was held, with more than 1 million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland taking part.
It took until 1975 for the United Nations to recognize and begin celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD). Since then, the UN has served as the major sponsor of the yearly event, encouraging more countries to recognize “acts of courage and resolve by ordinary women who have played an outstanding role in the history of their countries and communities.”
And for those wondering and feeling left out (get over it), there is an International Men's Day, which is celebrated on 19 November in more than 80 countries worldwide, including the UK. It has only been marked since the 1990s and isn't recognised by the UN.
What is the symbol and colour of International Women’s Day?
Tumblr media
The symbol for International Women’s Day is a female gender symbol. It is usually accompanied by the colours purple, green and white.
According to the International Women's Day website, purple stands for dignity and justice, green for hope, and white for purity. "The colours originated from the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the UK in 1908."
Is it a holiday?
Tumblr media
The day’s purpose varies by country. In some, it's a day of protest, while in others, it's a means to promote gender equality. In some countries, International Women's Day is observed as a national holiday.
IWD is recognized as an official national holiday in Afghanistan, Armenia, Belarus, Cambodia, Cuba, Georgia, Laos, Mongolia, Montenegro, Russia, Uganda, Ukraine and Vietnam.
In certain countries like Albania, Macedonia, Serbia and Uzbekistan, Women's Day has been combined with Mother's Day, a merger to highlight the importance of women as mothers.
In China, many women are given a half-day off work, while the Italian Festa della Donna is celebrated by the giving of mimosa blossoms.
Why is it a historical celebration in Russia?
Tumblr media
In 1917, the celebration of Women's Day in Russia got them the right to vote.
Women in Russia commemorated the day that year by going on strike for 'bread and peace' in order to protest World War I and campaign for gender equality. Tsar Nicholas II was far from happy and authorized General Khabalov of the Petrograd Military District to shoot any woman who refused to stand down. They did not back down and the protests remained and led to the Tsar’s abdication. The interim government granted women the right to vote as a result of their protest action.
What’s the theme this year?
Tumblr media
Ever since 1996, each International Women’s Day has an official theme.
The first theme adopted by the UN in 1996 was "Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future".
Last year, the theme for IWD was #Breakthebias, which highlighted the issues women face due to gender bias.
This year, the International Women's Day website has stated that it’s #EmbraceEquity. As the website states, 2023 focuses on how gender equity needs to be part of every society's DNA: “It’s critical to understand the difference between equity and equality. The aim of the IWD 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign theme is to get the world talking about Why equal opportunities aren't enough. People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action.”
The images linked to this year’s IWD all feature the hugging gesture, promoting giving equity a huge embrace.
Another highlight of this year is the UN's theme, which is 'DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality', aiming to to make people aware of the importance and contribution of digital technology in unveiling issues of gender inequality and discrimination. IWD will explore the impact of the digital gender gap on inequality for women and girls, as the UN estimates that women's lack of access to the online world will cause a $1.5 trillion loss to gross domestic product of low and middle-income countries by 2025 if action isn't taken.
"From the earliest days of computing to the present age of virtual reality and artificial intelligence, women have made untold contributions to the digital world in which we increasingly live," the UN stated. "Their accomplishments have been against all odds, in a field that has historically neither welcomed nor appreciated them."

Cover of the day: Day 15: Mint 19th century Montenegrin postal card
I still feel sick, so this post is also a bit late (I usually post at about 00:30 CEST, but it's 16:00 CEST), don't ask me why I always post at around midnight (My sleep schedule is a bit borked)
---
Today's cover was sent... nev... oh yeah, I'm not doing that anymore! Ok, I'll try again; Today I have a mint cover to show you! I'm not sure exactly when it was issued, sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century, It was issued by Montenegro, that I'm sure of.
People often forget Montenegro was an independent country before 2006 (including me). So here's a quick recap: First there was the Prince-Bishopric of Montenegro (1516–1852), then there was the Principality of Montenegro (1852–1910), then the Kingdom of Montenegro (1910–1918), in 1918 it was unified with Serbia, then they formed the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (Later Yugoslavia). Then in 2006 they became independent again. THE END.
The indicium is the same design as a stamp issued from 1874-1893, with a value of 2 novi-kreuzer, Montenegro used the Austrohungarian gulden until 1893 and the Austrohungarian Krone until 1906 (When they got their own currency, the Montenegrin Perper). The stamp features the portrait of Prince (Later King) Nicholas I of Montenegro (Montenegro was a principality from 1852-1910, then in became a kingdom in 1910).
All of the printed text on the postal card is in Montenegrin (Serbian) and French, 'Why French?', you may be wondering, well that's because until the 1920s or 30s had to have all text in the countries official language and in French, so foreign postal workers could sort mail more effectively (French was and still is the official language of the Universal Postal Union). The most common example of this are airmail labels (They all also say 'Par Avion')
Here are some examples:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
See? They're all also in French.
Enough talking about French, Here's the cover!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
See that it also says 'Union postale universelle' on the top? That's 'Universal Postal Union' in French (But you could already figure that out)

May I ask who were the possible royal suitors of OTMA and A lexei
Hello!
As I know to Olga there was Prince Ioann Konstantinovich, King Carol II of Romania, King Edward VIII of U.K and King Alexander I of yugoslavia. Some sources also speak about King George VI of U.K and Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich. There was also Grand Duke Constantine Constantinovich (he had a crush on her) and Grand Duke Boris Vladimirovich. Prince Christopher of Greece loved her and tried to marry her but Nicholas declined the offer.
To Tatiana there was King Alexander I of Yugoslavia (sources said the he was in love with her), King George VI of U.K and Prince Adalbert of Bavaria.
To Maria there was Prince Louis of Battenberg. King Carol II of Romania asked for her hand but Nicholas declined.
To Anastasia, some sources speak about King Leopold III of Belgium.
Boris of Bulgaria, Peter of Montenegro and Prince Arthur (son of Prince Arthur Duke of Connaught) were also mentioned as possible husbands for the girls.
As for Alexei there was Ileana of Romania, Princess Ingrid (she became Queen of Denmark). Others princesses of Norway and Greece were mentioned too.
