Dimanche 5 mars 2023, Théâtre de la Renaissance à Oullins (Rhône), où l’Opéra de Lyon présente Mélisande, une recomposition de l’oeuvre de Debussy à la mise en scène et à la partition tout à fait chamboulées, par Richard Brunel, pour un spectacle amaigri, nerveux et intrigant. Le tout, partition et travail théâtral, resserré autour de la figure de Mélisande, infiniment gracieuse et légère, qui occupe tout l’espace. Surveillez les dates de tournée, ça vaut le coup, et par exemple aux Bouffes du nord, à Paris, jusqu’au 19 mars.

Ça n’a pas grand chose à voir avec les Pelléas ordinaires, effrayants Golaud ou Mélisande symbolistes et languides. C’est plutôt du théâtre musical (cinq instruments sont sur scène, montés sur roulettes, rendus très présents dans le drame : saxo, percussions, violoncelle, harpe et accordéon. Ce dernier, monocorde le plus souvent, donnant le ton : une phrase sombre et simple accompagnant les personnages), aux  rares parties chantées. Richard Brunel avait expérimenté ce genre de formule de variation à Valence, quand il dirigeait la Comédie du lieu. L’artiste en résidence était alors Samuel Achache, petit prince de ce genre de folie musicale, à la fois foutraque et raffinée, qui y avait monté un Didon et Enée de même inspiration. Et ce n’est pas un hasard si on retrouve à Oullins une Mélisande qui en était passé par là, par Valence : Judith Chemla. Tendue, émouvante, diseuse, chanteuse, et danseuse. D’ailleurs c’est aussi par la danse qu’elle séduit Pélleas, sinueuse et déliée, dans une très belle et très prenante chorégraphie ‘aux cheveux’, où elle emprisonne son amant, comme une Salomé ensorceleuse. Ça passe sans cesse de l’un à l’autre : Pelléas tient la partie de saxo et on a ainsi l’illusion que Mélisande séduit un des musiciens du quintette.

Golaud, l’effrayant Golaud qu’on connaît, n’est plus que le diseur de son chagrin et de sa jalousie, voix pâle et défaite, quasi neutre. Impuissant à contenir son destin, comme impuissant à chanter...Contraste avec un Pélléas jeune et clair, attirant, innocent, à l’innocence de qui Mélisande ne peut que se laisser aller (tant il chante bien, et clair).

Mais ce Mélisande n’est pas une réduction du drame, ni de l’opéra de Debussy, un résumé pour mieux se faire comprendre, une version courte, c’est plutôt une variation, une interprétation. Tout est très mêlé, intime et dense. Cohérent : malade en blouse blanche, mourante et alitée au début et à la fin, Mélisande est en couleur quand elle aime, quand elle séduit. En rouge quand Gaulaud la violente. Et Richard Brunel lui laisse chanter ce beau vers, hymne stratégique (et comique) du mensonge amoureux :’je ne mens jamais, je ne mens qu’à ton frère.’ Incertitude de Mélisande : ment-elle toujours à Golaud ?..

Le Journal Le Monde vient de faire paraître (Vendredi 10 mars) un portrait très intéressant de Judith Chemla, qui retrace sa carrière et la laisse (bien) parler des enjeux des grands rôles féminins qu’elle aborde : ‘c’est impressionnant tout de même, à quel point les femmes peuvent mettre leur vie en jeu dans l’amour, et à quel point les héroïnes qui abandonnent tout pouvoir et se donnent à un homme sont glorifiées, mythifiées’ La grande qualité de ce spectacle est peut-être là : rendre sensible et vivant, plus touchant encore, le mythe de Mélisande.
