KANG MYUNGJI

Myungji never knew her parents– her earliest memories are of orphanages and group homes. At one point she was dragged from Hong Kong to a foster home in Seoul, but that didn’t last either, and it was back to orphanages again-- just in a new country this time. The only thing that ever stuck was a new name; Myungji. She doesn’t even remember her given Chinese name at all.

Never a very forceful child, Myungji always took a step back. The other children were loud and rowdy, always fighting over things, but she didn’t want to get in the middle of it, often choosing instead to take a step back and go hide her nose in a book instead. Reading was better than living. In books, she was taken away to places where things were better. She could distract herself from her situation. Sure, her being so timid meant that she often got the shorter end of the stick, but that didn’t bug her as much as it probably should. It was just the way life was, because she sure as hell wasn’t going to start pushing and fighting. It just wasn’t in-character.

The older she grew, the easier it was to slip away. Her favorite place to go was the library, often checking out piles of books at a time before going to sit on the sidewalk outside of her group home and reading there for hours on end. She probably looked quite a sight– a thin, pale girl covered in dirt, blanket wrapped around her shoulders as she read, not moving for hours at a time. And it was daily– she didn’t get up or move. She had nothing better to do.

People started to take notice of her after a while; after all, who wouldn’t notice a filthy girl huddled up reading all alone every day. Some stopped to talk to her. Some even returned. And before long, she;d grown close to some of the people who visited her, sharing her life with them. She liked them about as much as she liked her stories, which was really something. And when she was fifteen, someone offered to adopt her.

She accepted. It was better than the group homes, and the people who approached her were nice people– Mihye was kind, Choe was funny, and it meant Myungji would have a younger sister. She’d never had one of those before.

As time went on, Myungji and Mirae became very close– real sisters. Myungji had a room of her own she could read in. She didn’t have to fight to be heard. And while Choe dabbled in business that wasn’t totally legitimate, she was nice enough about it. The parts Myungji didn’t like, she ignored, and the cool parts felt they were right out of a novel. And for the first time, she had a last name too. Her name-- Kang Myungji-- didn’t fit her ethnicity, but it fit her new family. And she loved feeling like part of a collective. When she was old enough, though, with Choe’s help, she chose a Chinese name too-- Qiaolian. She never uses it, but having one makes her feel a little more legitimate in her identity. And again, with Choe’s help, she’s been trying hard to learn about her culture. Even if she’s never gotten to partake with it

Joining Spotlight happened on a whim. Mirae had joined Siren, which meant less time spent with Myungji. And Myungji needed something to do. A hobby, besides reading. She didn’t realize until later the significance of where she was signed to, and how huge it was. She still likes books better than people, but now she’s slated to debut in Violetta. And she’s scared, but excited for the next chapter of her lifr.
