#1354 - Diochlistus aureipennis - Wasp-mimicking Mydas Fly
Tumblr media
Photo by  Anthony ‘Eddy’ Edwards, in Stanthorpe, Queensland.
An excellent photo of this rare fly, that pretends to be a large wasp while it investigates dead trees. It’s likely that it’s looking for beetle grubs for the larvae to hunt.

Giant mydas fly, Gauromydas heros, Mydidae, Diptera
Found in South America, this species is the largest fly in the world, measuring three inches in length or more with a wingspan of about four inches.
Although not much is known about their behavior, adult males have been observed defending their territory centered on leafcutter ant nests where they will mate with females who lay their eggs nearby. Larvae live within the ant nests where they feed on beetle larvae, which in turn feed on the ants’ waste. Males feed on flower nectar while females apparently don’t feed at all.

👇🇪🇸&🇧🇷👇~ 🇬🇧 Some mydas flies are among the largest flies of the world –not the one I found–, and many species are mimics of wasps. Adult mydas flies aren’t frequently found as they spend most of their life cycle as larvae. Actually, adults live only for a few days, and while males are able to feed sucking flower nectar, females don't feed at all. Larvae are predators but, rather than searching for and devouring several prey items, they suck the hemolymph like lampreys or leeches do. [[|]] #macro #Diptera #Mydidae http://ift.tt/2mDEx3g
