I know who the killer is because it's the first trial of the game but here's what I'm thinking currently:

Prosecutor Portsman (for whatever reason) was in need of evidence for a trial he was most likely involved with. But Edgeworth had nothing in his safe, no evidence for Portsman to find. So he looked through the case files.

I don't know if he found what he was looking for.. But I believe he must have left the office door unlocked, which may have gotten Detective Faith's attention.

There was a struggle, I think. At least for the victim. He was backed up against the wall of case files, and was shot in the stomach. He instinctively places his hands on the wound and then tries to support himself and keep from falling. He falls onto his hands and (considering the position of the body) tried to escape?
