“Is being gay contagious?”

Steve stares at his phone groggily before putting it back against his ear. “…Mike?”

“Is it?”

“It’s three in the fuckin’ morning is what it is.” He rubs his nose, Mike’s words finally catching up to his brain. “Seriously, Mike? No it’s not fucking contagious, you’re not gonna get the gay disease or whatever from me. I promise you’ll keep liking girls.”

He’s a little hurt, even though he knows the question is innocent. They’ve been asking a lot of questions, like the inquisitive little assholes they are, but none of them had seemed like they weren’t okay with it. Until now.

“…that’s not what I meant,” Mike says. Steve realizes that his voice sounds shaky, even over the phone.

“Then what—“ he cuts himself off, realizing halfway through his bitching that there was only one reason Mike would call about this. “Oh.”

“Can you pick me up?”

“It’s three in the morning,” he repeats, even as he starts wondering where he left his keys. “Your mom…”

“Steve,” Mike pleads. “Please?”

He sighs. “I’m on my way.”

Mike is sitting on his doorstep when he pulls up, head in his hands. Steve doesn’t have to get out of the car, he stalks to the passenger door with all the vitriol of a boy with too many emotions to hold in, and wrenches the door open hard enough that Steve worries he’s going to break it.

“Watch it, noodle arms,” he says, trying to pretend this is normal. Maybe if he acts like it’s not well past midnight, Mike will relax.

It doesn’t work. Mike slumps in his seat, not bothering with the seatbelt. “Can you just drive?”

Steve drives. Doesn’t really know where they’re going, but it doesn’t matter. Just away seems to suffice.

He eventually pulls into a side road

“I’m scared to even touch another guy now! Because apparently hugging is gay when you’re older, and so is sleeping in the same bed, and telling your friends you love them, and…and I’m fucking scared all the time, ‘cause what if they’re right? How do they know? How can they tell by just fucking looking at me? It’s bullshit!”

“Shit, kid,” Steve says, heartbroken. “Shit. C’mere.”

He pulls him close, and Mike turns his face into the crook of his neck, shaking. His shirt collar starts to get damp.

“I don’t know what to do,” he cries. “I thought it was normal, I thought everyone was just…so scared all the time, and we just didn’t talk about it. But then you said that thing about being afraid and pushing it down, and I didn’t— I tried to ignore it. I tried so hard not to think about it, Steve, I swear I tried.”

“I know you did,” he says quietly. It hits him that he might be the only one who really gets it. Eddie gave up denying it long ago, deciding to evolve into something else for them to focus on. Robin’s a girl. Which doesn’t mean jack shit in most cases, because being a lesbian fucking sucks in a town like Hawkins, but girls aren’t as obsessive about it. Sometimes when they compare notes, Robin will just stare at him.

Mike shakes his head. “I don’t know what I did wrong,” he mumbles tearfully into his shoulder.

“You didn’t do anything wrong,” Steve says with a surprising amount of vehemence. He grabs Mike by his scrawny little shoulders, pulls him away so he can look directly into his bloodshot eyes. “Not a damn thing, do you hear me? There is nothing wrong with you, and anyone who tells you otherwise deserves a swift kick in the balls. Got it?”

Mike responds by bursting into loud, messy sobs.

Steve just keeps holding him, running a hand through his hair and soothing him gently, like he wishes someone had done for him or Robin or Eddie when they were young. Finally Mike pulls away, embarrassment starting to set in.

“Sorry,” he mutters.

“Can I tell you a secret?” Steve asks instead of a meaningless platitude he knows Mike wouldn’t accept.

Mike gives him a suspicious look. “I guess.”

“I’m scared too. All the time.”

“No you’re not,” Mike snorts. “You don’t need to make me feel better just because I’m a pussy.”

“I’m not joking,” he says. “Why do you think I dated girls? Why do you think I went through so many lengths to hide it? It’s fucking terrifying, man. But you know what makes it less scary?”

“Dating girls? Marrying a woman?”

“No.” He pokes Mike’s chest, right over his heart. “People. Friends who love and accept you. Friends who know what you’re going through, even.”

“Do you…” Mike chews his lip. “Do you think Nancy would be okay with it? With me?”

“Absolutely I do. She was okay with me, wasn’t she? And I was her boyfriend.”

“Yeah, but it’s different when it’s your family, right? Sometimes people don’t care if someone is… people don’t care until it affects them. Do you think Nancy is like that?”

He knows Nancy isn’t like that, but that's a talk they’re going to have to have themselves. “I really don’t,” he encourages. “I think she’d be really glad to know this part of you, actually. She loves you.”

“…I know,” he says, shifting uncomfortably. “I don’t… we made this dumb no secrets pact the first time the Upside-Down happened, I don’t know why. It’s stupid. But…I don’t want to keep secrets from her anymore.”

underrated pairings okay that’s pretty much all my ships!

brulian ok i know people loved br*cas but i think brooke deserves someone who thinks the sun shines outta her ass and she found that in julian he adores her and they are so wonderful they could cure my depression they make me so happy bc lucas is whatever at the end of the day julian can run circles around lucas and that’s a fucking fact when it comes to loving and understanding brooke bc he and her have much more in common and she never felt inferior to him or shitty or hurt or sad about not being enough and not being let in. they deserve each other because they had such a hard time in love and life and he only has eyes for her. i love them and i will cherish them forever. i need a rewatch. 

sparcy now this one everyone's got their opinions on who spin should be with and imma say darcy bc i know i love spaige too but paige didn’t appreciate him for the sweet boy he really is and when nobody wanted to be spin’s friend or even look at him - darcy didn’t give a shit and accepted him with open arms and an open heart they make me feel so happy and they were adorable and sweet and romantic and then fucking canon fucked them over but we’ll always have redemption song and foolin’ to reminisce upon. i can never have nice things.

steve and kelly for some reason i shipped really hard in bh 90210 in the first 2 seasons and it broke me when they had that episode about this rumor he spread about kelly back in the day i really felt that bc kelly even tho they had weird history and steve was bitter she cared for him and they understood each other and were friends after and spent many years being friends and that hurt bad but i loved them together and wanted them to come full circle and never did and im bitter and sad but they had something special 

klare even tho it doesnt last forever they’re hella underrated

emma and jay is my ship from hell i swear i’d ship them like no tomorrow even tho my true love is semma i will settle for some emjay i literally know like 3 people who feel this miriam and mike’s chem was undeniable. it was such a missed opporunity for them to date during season 5 (: ahh only in fanfiction and in my dreams

this show is also forever old but back to bh 90210 i fucking shipped the fuck out of andrea and brandon and even tho brandon’s preachy ass was dating every one-episode girl or girl of the week whatever you prefer he should’ve been looking at her  they had such a nice dynamic and i think they’d be one of those great ships started out as friends and became something special but of course again brimi can’t have nice things so yea

what is your absolute favorite ship?

Ummmm hard to say??? favorites are. impossible. right now i’m fully back into StormPilot tho because Star Wars got me back in its grips, and also queerplatonic!JediStormPilot (bc i love Finn and Poe being romantic as heck together, but my bby Rey is v aroace and v happy to queerplatonically cuddle with her two dork boyfriends or fall asleep on Finn’s shoulder.

Then there’s also Ringsy (Ringo and Easy from Unter Uns) which is trash, and i’m fully aware it’s trash, but anyone following me can see that i also completely sold my soul to this ship whoops i live for my asshole bi boy and my pure gay cinnamon roll and i got no regrets

but i guess when it comes to all time/long time faves, I also have to say George Squared from Call Me Katie, and WolfStar (Remus and Sirius) from Harry Potter. 

what ship do you hate most?

r*ylo. and noorhelm from skam. Basically, any ship that puts my lady faves with abusive asshole creeps.

what was your first ship, and what fandom is it from?

uuuhhhhh *sweating nervously* my very first ship, before i even knew what shipping was, was Lisa/Rokko from Verliebt in Berlin (for anyone who doesn’t know: that was the german telenovela version of Ugly Betty). 

my first proper ship after that was Draco/Harry. yupppp i was one of those people………

is there a ship that you used to ship, but don’t anymore?

Drarry is definitely one of those. I also used to ship a couple of rarepairs in HP that i don’t really care for anymore, like Ron/Draco, Ron/Blaise Zabini, Remus/Severus (cringeworthy, i know, but to my defense, that was before half blood prince) and stuff like that. I also used to ship Johnlock a lot, but I lost interest in BBC Sherlock, so i don’t really care anymore.

what’s a ship you like that most people don’t?

ummm Jonathan/Steve/Nancy from Stranger Things maybe? And Nancy/Barb. Oh and Rory/Jess in Gilmore Girls - which, I know, there are loads of people who ship that, but there are also loads of people who have a very strong opinion against that ship. 

Also, maybe Cho/Harry/Cedric?? Idk how most people feel about that, it’s not a very well known ship or anything, and I mostly ship Harry with Ginny anyway, but I do like the idea of their dynamics.

and ummmm this probably doesn’t count, but in the webseries Project Green Gables, I ship Anne with Reggie Gardner, which. Ummm. Reggie Gardner is not really a character that exists yet, but it’s just my version of how I imagine Roy Gardner in this adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. It’s not really fair to say that other people don’t like this ship because how can they, if this character only exists in a few of my posts but not really in the show??? but anyway, doesn’t matter, because Anne/Gil is still OTP and they’re definitely endgame

huh. well I guess I don’t really hate it, but like i said before, to me, Rey is aroace, so I don’t really care for romantic/sexual FinnRey. but like, everyone, do your thing.

oh, but i definitely don’t like mike/el in Stranger Things. I haven’t seen s2 yet, but uuuggghhhh it just weirds me out and makes me uncomfortable, the way heteronormativity gets pushed on El, who would be the perfect character to explore breaking boundaries beyond the binary and the normative rules of society about girlhood and sexuality and all that.

what is the most underrated ship, in your opinion?

Basically, all femslash ships??? Like, I used to love MorGwen back in my Merlin days, but there was so little content for them, and while I love Merthur, too, it was extremely unbalanced. 

Also very underrated: friend-ships. like damn, i friend-ship Joan and Sherlock in Elementary so much!!! I dig all the friendships in B99!!! I need more friend fic!!!

what is the most overrated ship, in your opinion?

ummm idk probably johnlock and destiel?? this is definitely nothing against people who ship it. i have shipped both of these. i just got tired of seeing people fall for the queerbaiting, and still holding on to impossible hope. I get how we’re all desperate for representation, and it’s absolutely vile to drag us into shows with promising pairs and amazing chemistry, and then just teasing us for eternity without ever going through with anything - i get that’s not the fault of the shippers. but i’m just tired of queerbait ships. give me real queer representation damnit!!

oh, also kylux. I’m just not feeling it?? honestly, Hux hates Kylo, and Kylo is an angry manbaby, there’s just nothing appealing about this ship to me at all.
