Tax rise warning: Dramatic Fuel hike sparks fears for taxpayers as Tory rebellion brews

Cross-party calls to make a £20 top up on benefits permanent have placed pressure on Boris Johnson. A Labour motion, which does not lead to an automatic policy shift but signifies increased expectancy from MPs, passed by 278 votes to none following a Commons debate.

It included votes by six Tory MPs – Stephen Crabb, Peter Aldous, Robert Halfon, Jason McCartney, Anne Marie Morris and Matthew Offord – who were ordered to abstain.

But covering the cost of the permanent rise has yet to be established, with sources telling The Sun a possible outcome is a rise in fuel duty by five pence per litre.

Fuel duty currently sits at 57.95p, but a rise could spark a major Tory rebellion.

A source told the newspaper: “We have spent nearly £300billion so far in this pandemic to help support families through this crisis.

“As a former Conservative PM once said, there is no magic money tree.”

But Mr Johnson refused to rule out ending the £20 weekly increase in Universal Credit as of April.

The rise is worth £1,000-a-year to families – but he did not say if it would be extended beyond the end of March.

Mr Crabb, the former Work and Pensions Secretary, rebelled for the first time against the party whip.

He said the weekly rise should be kept for a further 12 months to give people “certainty” over their finances.

“Opportunities for people to find new work, increase their hours, boost their earnings, improve their family finances have been massively curtailed by the economic impact of the public health emergency, and that’s the context for this discussion about cutting back the £20 per week uplift,” Mr Crabb said.

“It’s why I believe the uplift is so important right now and it’s why I believe it needs to be extended for a further 12 months.”

Sixty five Conservative MPs in the Northern Research Group (NRG) said ending the increase would be “devastating”.

Sir Keir Starmer called Mr Johnson “pathetic” for telling Tories not to vote on the motion, while Downing Street said Chancellor Rishi Sunak will update the public “shortly”.

Scrapping the £20-a-week rise will be damaging for low-income households who face a four percent drop in 2021, The Resolution Foundation think tank said.

Relative poverty would rise from 21 percent to 23 percent by 2024-25, amounting to an extra 730,000 children in poverty, it added.
