Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)
Tumblr media
I like to think of Brotherhood of the Wolf as one of those Batman action figures I used to get as a kid. Take away the crazy-colored shield that doubles up as a magnifying glass, the rocket boots, and unnecessary gimmick and you've got a much better, simpler, leaner product. Le pacte des loups a.k.a. Brotherhood of the Wolf features an intriguing mystery. There are elements of horror, the period-piece setting is lavish, the characters draw you in. Then, out of nowhere, a bunch of action scenes are thrown in and the plot goes completely loopy. It remains entertaining but makes you wonder what they were thinking.
In 1766 France, in the province of Gévaudan, the locals are being terrorized by an animal unlike anything they’ve ever seen. King Louis XV sends Grégoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan) and his brother in arms Mani (Mark Dacascos), a Mohawk Indian, to investigate. Their search leads Grégoire to believes the beast is somewhere between an animal and the monster the people believe in.
There’s a lot of good stuff going on here. The mystery for instance. Is this creature a legitimate monster, a wild animal, something else? Your hypothesis will change with each clue. While Mani and Grégoire aren't examining the torn bodies and footprints, a lot is happening. Politics and twisting allegiances make you wonder. Different people are using these horrifying events to their advantage, which in turn forces all of these other pieces to muddle up the mystery. Grégoire and Mani are stepping in the middle of it and disrupting this complex machine. There are many subplots including the brotherhood between Grégoire and Mani, the love plot between our hero and the attractive Marianne (Émilie Dequenne), and the rivalry between the different hunters sent to track down the beast.
When you think you've got this movie figured out... it brings in elements of horror. The gore, the slow reveals of the beast, it's well done. The period piece setting adds a lot of suspense and intrigue. People acted differently in the 18th century. Seeing some of the outdated beliefs clash with some of the more contemporary values of the investigation keeps you wondering. There’s a natural spookiness to stories dominated by superstitions. The isolation of the province adds atmosphere.
There's enough good here to recommend the film but a lot of flaws pop out during the last quarter.  It’s as if the director wanted to make a cool martial arts action movie, and a period piece horror thriller at the same time. When you mix two opposites, you don't always get Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Scenes where dozens of mooks fight with kung-fu moves, whip-like swords, razor hand fans, and “final boss” battles don’t belong anywhere near this film, but they’re included... for some reason! At 152 minutes, this picture turns into a bit of a mess at the end without sinking completely.
I like Brotherhood of the Wolf. The special effects are pretty good. Each clue compels you to inch closer. The characters are interesting. It approaches the “countryside monster” story creatively. I just wish we could've skipped the martial arts. The stunts and choreography are fun but they belong in a different realm altogether. (Original French version on DVD, March 4, 2015)

Back from watching #JohnWick3 at the local #VueCinema (@vue) and gosh darn it, it was a lot of fun! Carrying straight on after Chapter 2, #JohnWick is the world's most hunted man, with wave after wave of assassins on his trail. The fight sequences are very well choreographed, brutal and bloody, as you would expect from this series by now. Be it guns, blades or martial arts, the action scenes were always exhilarating to watch, as were the chase scenes through New York City. A great cast of characters compliments the action, #IanMcShane #LanceReddick and #LaurenceFishburne are excellent once again, and there's a few great additions this time too, including a pair vicious dogs belonging to #HalleBerry's Sofia, #MarkDacascos excellent foil for #KeanuReeves and #AsiaKateDillon playing it cool as The Adjudicator as well. There's also smattering of humour in amongst carnage which I liked and helped keep a level of levity amongst the bloodshed. #JohnWick3Parabellum is a really enjoyable movie that is exhilarating, energetic and full of balletic action. Looking forward to seeing what happens next! #InstaMovieReview (at Vue) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxviWdNH5Gp/?igshid=n05061xu56dw

Review : John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
Tumblr media
If you’d have told preteen me that ‘Ted’ Theodore Logan of the Wyld Stallions would one day be a top tier action hero, I probably would’ve laughed long and hard.  Yet, here we are, nearly three decades removed from the Bill & Ted series (which is apparently getting a final entry in the near future), and Keanu Reeves not only has several action films (standalone and series) under his belt, but he is creating a new icon in the form of his John Wick character, who has recently returned to the big screen in the form of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum.
John Wick (Keanu Reeves), fresh off the kill of newly appointed High Table member Santino D’Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio), is declared excommunicado with a $14 million bounty on his head.  Every assassin in Manhattan is on his heels, and WIck is doing all that he can to avoid them in hopes of passage to Casablanca, where he can seek absolution in his continued quest to separate himself from a life of being a literal ‘angel of death’.  Meanwhile, the High Table has appointed an Adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon) to punish Winston (Ian McShane), the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne), the Director (Anjelica Huston), and anyone else who aided Wick in taking D’Antonio’s life.  The Adjudicator also doubles down on her mission by hiring Zero (Mark Dacascos), an assassin with a small but dedicated pack of followers, to exact the revenge she issues while seeking Wick in hopes of killing him.  After seeking a favor from former friend Sofia (Halle Berry), Wick is pointed in the direction of The Elder (Said Taghmaoui), the one man above the High Table, but Wick learns that the absolution he seeks will come at a great cost.
As the third film in a series, some (like myself) would probably assume the scope of the film would be bigger and grander, but with the premise of the film being the world closing in on John, the film is quite reserved in terms of the use of locations.  The feeling of ‘eyes everywhere’ does carry over from the previous films, however, being enhanced to the point that it becomes an aesthetic, especially in New York.  Parabellum is also a meditation on choices you can’t take back, what it means to face the consequences of those choices, and how one makes difficult decisions to survive, sometimes at the cost of those you love.  Seeing that Wick is hoping to escape his past life, the stakes continue to grow from film to film in regards to his ultimate choice : die, or continue to be an instrument of death.
Maybe I just never paid attention to the timeline of the previous two films, but I was surprised to learn the actions of the first two films took place over the course of a week, making Wick a fresh legend in this film that has recently proved capable of taking on all comers.  As we’ve learned in previous films, everything is a weapon in the hands of Wick, and this film continues the innovation of using the unconventional in unconventional ways that play completely logical upon reflection (for the context, anyway).  The ever growing presence of The Table is sown throughout the film, including the classic line ‘everything is under The Table’, which is setting them up to be a formidable foe for the continued series.  I really enjoy how even in such a chaotic world, honor is a mandatory code (for most, anyway), order is respected, and the rules of engagement are always in effect.
The latest film doesn’t waste time with a recap of previous events, opting instead to pick right up in the story, hitting the ground running, and blasting through the finish line with promise of more race to come.  The highly stylized violence makes brilliant spatial use of each environment, providing us with easily the best collection of fight sequences thus far in 2019.  Balancing Wick against Sofia gives us insight into Wick’s calculating and efficient style, as it plays well against her passionate and aggressive style (her two dogs are a nice touch as well).  The set design for all locations is amazing as well, especially Winston’s glass office.
Keanu Reeves was born to play this role, with his focus from his martial arts disciplines meshing perfectly with his eerily consistent youthful, handsome looks, with just a splash of humor to take the edge off.  Ian McShane plays the eye of the hurricane well, clearly reveling in the convenience of being the centerpiece of most frames he is in.  Laurence Fishburne gets to play lighter than normal, and he dives headlong into the task, setting up what will more than likely be an epic vicious turn in the next film.  Mark Dacascos nearly steals the film away from a stellar cast, with some truly humorous standout moments that manage to elicit memorable laughs, but not at the cost of the film’s tension or style.  Asia Kate Dillon exacts a calculating stillness as the Adjudicator, opting to let her presence and the weight of having The Table behind her carry the threat.  Lance Reddick comes on with his normal reserved, dignified demeanor, but gets to put on his action hat for the final third of the film, to much audience delight.  Strong appearances by Halle Berry, Anjelica Huston, Said Taghmaoui, a surprisingly reserved Jason Mantzoukas, and a host of martial artists and stuntmen round out the cast.
It seems clearly obvious that this story will continue, as the ending scene plants HUGE seeds for a continuation.  In all honesty, I’m all for it, and hope that the new movie comes sooner than later, because based on the aforementioned seeds planted, the John Wick saga is only just beginning to unleash the madness.

John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum - Review
5/21/19
Tumblr media
Directed by Chad Stahelski (Thunder Road Pictures / Summit Entertainment)
John Wick 3 picks up near minutes after the prior film, when John (Keanu Reeves) kills a member of the Illuminati-like High Table, Santonio D’Antonio (Riccardo Scamarico). Adding to the crime was it occurring on Continental grounds, a sacred haven for the assassin’s guild of New York City. While John gets a small grace period from the Continental's owner Winston (Ian McShane), a bounty of $14 million dollars is placed on his head, and the contract goes live by 6pm. Using what brief time John has, he goes to a doctor working for the guild to get a quick stitch up. Once 6pm hits, all resources and services are stripped, adding a ticking clock element to the beginning of the film. John is injured and on the run, doing what he can to survive surrounded by professional assassins, and working towards getting the contract withdrawn. This is an incredible action film, even by the series’ standards, and is my favorite film of 2019 so far.
This movie continues all of the qualities that have made the past 2 films great. Not only is this a shoot-’em-up film, but just as much martial arts are used in conjunction with the gunplay (“gun fu”). Keanu Reeves has proven himself one of the best action actors in the past, but this is no more evident than in the John Wick series. He does most of the stunts and shooting himself, adding authenticity and credibility to the action, especially for a 54 year old man. This is not a quickly edited massacred film to make up for lazy choreography or real skill: John is the real thing and is largely thanks to Keanu Reeve’s dedication and skills. John Wick 3 is also shot extremely well, filming action scenes with longer takes and a steady camera. The use of color is also a unique, as even the dankest and darkest corridors somehow are still splashed in vivid neon colors, contrasting with the deep blacks of the scene.
Tumblr media
Not enough can be said about the visceral action, which is somehow more inventive than before. Incorporating horses, dogs, motorcycles, knives, swords, and much more contribute to the creativity of the action. One of my favorite scenes is when John teams up with an assassin from Morocco named Sofia (Halle Berry), where we see the two fighting off dozens of thugs, and her German Shepards get in on the action. Halle Berry turns in a surprisingly good performance, and easily makes up for her middle of the road action roles in the past. Another scene which I won’t go into specifics about, sees John pitted against fully armored squads, forcing him to get creative with his hit-and-run tactics. The music I also noticed was fantastic in this film, and stood out like never before, something I’m definitely downloading later and will be listening to quite often.
John Wick 3 expands on the lore of the world as well. One of my other favorite aspects of the movie is getting to know a little more about John’s history and how he was trained, without being a full blown origins film. It’s just a taste of the bigger picture, something we’ve gotten a bit more of in each entry of this series. Returning character who are friends of John include the aforementioned Ian McShane as Winston, Laurence Fishburne the underground Bowery King, and Lance Reddick the classy concierge manager. All of these characters get more screen time and more to do than in the prior films, and I enjoy seeing more of their relationship and connection to John.
Tumblr media
It’s incredible how much pain and damage John endures during the course of the film. It nearly escapes my suspension of disbelief how much he is able to walk away from, but the filmmakers never shy away for showing how broken John is. He isn’t an invincible super soldier; he hobbles and limps with almost every step, and the physicality to the fight scenes ground me right back in believably. I also think its funny how people can be killed right in the middle of a crowd and no one will notice. It reminded me of the least believable scene from John Wick 2 where Keanu and Common fired silenced shot at each other in a crowded public space and people remained oblivious. It’s a small nit pick but it is something I think they could work on. I am worried in sequels that the lore will begin to collapse under its own weight. The mechanics of how the assassin’s guild works is very cool, and i like how seriously everyone takes it, but I don’t want them to keep adding aspects to it just because they think they need to.
John Wick 3 has securely earned itself one of the best action movies ever made (in my book). What makes this series special is not just the high octane action, but the clear cinematography, amazing choreography, use of color, amazing gun-fu, interesting mythology, and strong characters. John Wick 3 is far removed from its peers, standing as one of the most intelligently made pure action films of its kind, especially made in the West. The film somehow improves on the prior two films, while making small expansions to the world, and leaving things open for a sequel. The director, choreographers, cinematographers, and Keanu Reeves give this series a lot of staying power and I hope it doesn’t end anytime soon.
