★ Salman Hosts Private Screening of Antim for his Staff!

With the final shoot completed in the second week of July, Salman Khan held a private screening of his home production, Antim: The Final Truth, for the members of his staff at his Panvel farmhouse last week. Directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, the movie stars Salman’s brother-in-law, Aayush Sharma, Pragya Jaisal, Mahima Makwana and Jisshu Sengupta, and is an official remake of the Marathi film, Mulshi Pattern.

Says a source in the unit, “Salman held a screening of Antim at his Panvel farmhouse last week. Social distancing and strict safety protocols were maintained by those while watching the movie at his farmhouse. Everyone in his staff, from the cook to his security staff, driver, and some of the people who work on his farm, watched a rough cut. Salman likes to watch his films multiple times before release to check if it needs any work.”

The source adds that Salman knows that those who have watched the rough cut will not leak out the news about the film. “He trusts his staff completely. They have been with him for years through his highs and lows and always give him honest feedback. Salman was watching it and he wanted his staff’s opinion as Antim is a commercial, mass-oriented entertainer.”

Mahesh Manjrekar has adapted the story of Mulshi Pattern for a pan-Indian audience. Salman essays the role of a Punjabi cop, while Aayush plays a gangster called Rahulya. Apart from producing the movie, Antim is a film Salman has personally and emotionally invested in, as Aayush plays the protagonist and a challenging character. It’s a kind of relaunching pad for Aayush who has gone to great lengths and a complete makeover to portray his role convincingly against Salman’s larger-than-life persona on screen. Apparently, Salman’s staff loved Varun Dhawan’s Ganpati song with Salman and Aayush. “It is one of the highlights of Antim as is Bhai ka birthday song. The Ganpati song is a peppy dance track choreographed by Mudassar Khan. The song, composed by Hitesh Modak, is titled Dev Bappa Ganesha and was shot in Film City in Mumbai in January this year,” the source shares.Antim has been shot during the pandemic and is one of the fastest movies Salman has completed. He began shooting for Antim in the first week of December last year and wrapped up the final schedule earlier this month. The lead cast led by him, Pragya, Aayush and Mahima shot in and around Mumbai at Film City, a bungalow in Byculla and Mumbai Mills over the last week. Salman’s makeup artist, Raju Nag, and bodyguard, Shera, have done cameos in the movie.

While a teaser of Salman and Aayush locking horns was launched in February this year, the makers were about to release the first poster (with Antim’s release date in October) around March end, when the second wave struck. While the makers are aiming for a theatrical release, at this point there are too many films waiting in the queue, so even they don’t know what will happen next and are keeping all options open.

Salman wanted a gap of four to five months between the release of Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai (which came out on May 13) and Antim. The makers don’t want to have a back-to-back release of two Salman Khan movies. But as of now everything is on hold and the film will be released after October. People’s frame of mind is sombre after what they have gone through and it would be insensitive to launch any kind of promotional material at the moment. So, the makers decided to take some time off and figure out their next move instead of announcing the film and trying to market it as it is difficult to sustain a campaign for five-six months. Antim is still in the editing and post-production phase with VFX, dubbing, etc., going on.

Mahesh and Salman had finalised two posters for the March launch – first a poster with Aayush and Mahima and the second with Salman and Pragya. The idea was to have multiple posters and trailers, which are ready. This way they can decide what to showcase well, including a romantic song composed by Sajid-Wajid and picturised on Salman and Pragya, and the rest of the songs (composed by Hitesh Modak) and picturised on Aayush and Mahima.

Mulshi Pattern was helmed by Marathi actor-filmmaker Pravin Tarde. It is the story of a young man becoming a gangster after his father’s land is sold to corporates through gangsters.

Mahesh Manjrekar’s Antim: The Final Truth, which went on the floors from November 16 in Pune, had his son, Satya, assisting him on the sets and daughter, Ashwami, being part of the crew too.

Salman and Mahesh share an 11-year-long relationship. They first worked together in Prabhu Deva’s Wanted, and the actor-filmmaker’s children also share a warm relationship with the star. Interestingly, Mahesh's other daughter, Saiee, made her Bollywood debut with Dabangg 3 opposite Salman Khan lead last year. Shabina Khan and Mudassar Khan have choreographed the dance tracks in Antim, which includes a love track composed by Vishal Mishra. Antim: The Final Truth also has Nikitin Dheer in a pivotal role.

She was born only ten minutes before the beginning of Fall, a true disappointment. For as long as she can remember, it had always been her favourite season. Colourful tree leaves, ridiculous coats in the 1990s and the scent of apple pies filled her with a joy impossible to describe. When the hot summer days would fade away, young Fleur (her parents always nicknamed her Fleur, which is French for flower) was at her happiest. There was nothing that comforted her more than Fall weather. She was lucky to have a large bay window in her bedroom, so she could sit nearby and let the evolution of nature inspire her. She collected leaves, placing them in between pages of colouring books, magazines or homework. She always had one on her, so she would remember this wonderful season when her parents had to travel for work. She enjoyed Fall in New York City and in Vancouver, in Paris too. She hated it when she followed her parents to California. She missed the chilly wind and relaxing raindrops.

Nothing competed with spending Fall in Québec. The Marathi’s had one specific tradition: they would always take an entire week off work, drive to a cabin outside of Montréal, stock up on marshmallows, crackers, chocolate, cocoa powder and apples. They would bake together, sing and dance. They would walk around the forest. They would enjoy the silence and peace of nature, compared to their busy lives in the city. Countless times, Flora asked her parents if they could move there instead. She was intrigued by small towns, but they were right, she would get bored of them very fast.

In 2016, somewhere around her birthday, Flora and Samuel travelled back to Canada to experience this family tradition together. It was the happiest the both of them had ever been. Samuel knew that one day when he found Florence standing on the balcony, watching the sun rise and shine over the red, orange and yellow trees that there was nothing in this world he loved more than this woman. It took him a couple of months to actually get on one knee, but he had asked the permission to do so from her parents during this week out of town. It was also at that moment he knew they would have a Fall themed wedding, because he could understand the impact of this season on Florence. It was almost mystical. Her birthday did not mean much, she did not feel wiser or prepared for more mature changes. She went through this process while leaves fell to the ground until trees were nothing but branches covered with delicate snowflakes.

If fall, as a season, was her favourite time of the year, Halloween never was. Flora, as a kid, did not get to go trick or treating. Her parents found it pointless, since she could wear costumes on any other days of the year and she only had to bat her eyes to get all the candies she could dream of.They decorated their house, only so they could give candies to other kids around. Generousity, that was one of the most important values in the Marathi household. At school, she would be one of the only kids who did not dress up. She felt out of place, quite obviously, but she grew tired of vampires and other silly and effortless costumes. She would spend the whole month of October doodling costumes in her notebooks instead of paying attention in class. Her grades never really suffered, but she held a grudge against her parents for never dressing her up as a pumpkin when she was a baby. They missed a good family photoshoot opportunity, truly.

Now, onto the costumes... She would dress up for Halloween parties, back in New York. She never put too much thought into it. Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe... She went for big dresses, for classical makeup and for looks that would inevitably turn heads. It depended on the parties, that was for sure. If they were formal, she put extra efforts into looking as elegant as possible (most likely because there would be photographers everywhere and she did not want to disappoint her parents). On the opposite of the spectrum, if she was with friends and colleagues for a production she was working for, she turned heads for other reasons. Don’t get me wrong, Florence does not like to provoke. Only, she can get very confident in herself and showing skin never bothered her. Her favourite thing was to dress up as important historical figures. Athena and Cleopatra were her best work, in her own humble opinion. She made the costumes herself, leaving very little to imagination. It weas always done with dignity and taste. She did not mind, and it was not like people were sober enough to remember. Everybody had a good time, and she sure did enjoy looking like powerful women from Antiquity. If she were to pick one more fierce woman, she would go for Mata Hari, or Marianne (the free the titty lady from the French Revolution).

When she moved to Amory, she took it to a more socially acceptable and decent level. For their first Halloween together, as boyfriend and girlfriend, Samuel and Florence dressed up as The Corpse Bride’s couple. For their second, they went as Superman and Wonder Woman. The chest piece was probably a little intense, but for someone who only had access to the movie trailer, she did a very realistic job. And Samuel? He looked absolutely handsome. She still keeps a photo album decidated to their Halloween costumes.

She started dressing up again in 2019, this time as Jasmine. Very predictable, one could say. And they would certainly be right. She had the green, the red and the purple outfits Jasmine wore in the animated movie. She opted for the traditional one. It was only then she entertained the idea of dressing up like a Disney Princess for every year. In 2020, she was Belle. Her plans for 2021? Sleeping Beauty or Ariel, although she has no idea how to walk with a mermaid tail.

Some things never change. Florence still prepares bags of candies that she distributes to schools around town or to different daycares. She can put on her Jasmine costume in a heartbeat if she was asked to entertain children even for a few minutes. She decorates more for Fall than Halloween, but she never misses an opportunity to hoard adorable decor items in hues of burnt orange and yellow ocre. She also makes a pretty tasty hot apple cider! If I were you, I would not hope to leave her apartment after a visit with a slice of pie or spice cake, unless you like your desserts burnt.

WHY I LOVE IT

• The production value. From the flourishing Pune, to the gut-wrenching Goddess’s Womb, you can tell that the creators behind this worked hard in these sets. And not just the sets; the special effects, makeup, and costume design is stupendous. The makeup for the infected, such as Raghav and the great great grandmother, is genuinely horrifying and scary. Hastar’s character design is equally terrifying but very well done. And the costumes are historically accurate for the 1940′s India. When you watch this movie, you wonder how the budget was just 5 crores (you heard me right, 5 crores!) but the quality is just so high. 

• The performances. Although the movie doesn’t have any prominent star faces, but the cast deliver memorable performances. Anita Date as Vinayak’s wife, Ronjini Chakraborty as Vinayak’s mistress, and Jyoti Malshe as Vinayak’s mother all do what the script requires them to do and don’t feel out of place at all. Soham Shah as the greedy and lustful Vinayak shows his versatility and proves how underrated he is in the industry. But the breakout star of this film is Mohammad Samad as Pandurang, Vinayak’s child who is following his fathers pathway to greediness for wealth and lust. At such a young age, Samad manages to give a pivotal role and leave a lasting impression on the viewers, which is very commendable.

• The soundtrack. I know I praise literally every movie’s soundtrack, but I have to give credit where it is due. The background score Jesper Kyd is bound to give you goosebumps whenever it is on and it complements the damp rainy weather of Tumbbad very well. The title track by Ajay-Atul and sung by Atul Gogavale has Marathi roots with meaningful lyrics

• The complexity of human nature. This masterpiece from Rahi Anil Bavre along with the stunning visuals has a great understanding of human traits, mainly greed and lust. Our protagonist, Vinayak, is money-hungry and lustful, both not ideal qualities for a Bollywood protagonist. On the surface level, he is clearly corrupt and almost villainous. But when I re watched the movie, I couldn’t help but think if what we see if just the tip of the iceberg. That is exactly how humans percieve each other; judging a person by their surface level traits. Vinayak is the character whose personality you question when you analyse his choices closely. That is what I enjoy about this movie. Whenever I watch this movie, I get to think about each of the characters morality. Is Vinayak’s mother really the evil one by giving Vinayak a negligent childhood and favoring her other son? Is Vinayak’s mistress manipulative or misunderstood? Notice the little details, maybe the picture is completely different.

CONCLUSION

This unique fusion of mythology and horror will definitely be a remembered film for its breathtaking visuals and memorable performances. All the awards this film won is very well deserved and I really do hope that more films like these come out sooner.
