Do you agree with the popular conclusion in western linguistics that vowel length is not phonemic in modern Marathi (even if it’s indicated in writing)? I went to Maharashtra for the first time during my last visit to India and I did notice that vowel length was a lot more ambiguous than I expected in all cases, but especially in the distinction between अ and आ. But the mutual intelligibility between Maharashtrian Marathi and my dialect, Thanjavur Marathi, is not great, so wtf do I know

This sounds like one of those things that we don't really pay attention to as native speakers, but would be very important for someone learning the language!

However, I do think that there is plenty of ambiguity between short and long vowels, especially इ/ई and उ/ऊ. The example that comes to mind for me is that the -वू suffix in Marathi, where say धावू नकोस is pronounced closer to धाउ नकोस.

I can't say I've noticed an ambiguity between अ and आ though. I think some examples might help there.

• Sanskrit is a difficult language to learn. You have been toiling at it for over a year now, but are nowhere near as fluent as you would like to be. Your Maushi and Kaki sit you down and explain everything. The tables aren't nearly as boring anymore.

• You find the kajal your Ajji made for you when you were a wee baby, in the back of the attic with the rest of your baby things. The tiny metal dabbi is inscribed with beautiful designs and colours, and you brush off the dust and open the lid. It's still full to the brim. You smile. The next day, your crush tells you that your eyes are beautiful.

• Your Mama takes you out to the bazaar to get you your first true saree. Both he and you have been waiting for this day for years. You return home with a beautiful peacock blue silk nauvari.

• The Gajra in your hair has you feeling like you're flying above the clouds. It smells daivik, and you haven't stopped smiling since the boy pinned it to your braided ambada.

Today, we remember Vikram Gokhale, who passed away on November 26, 2022. A renowned actor in Marathi theatre, Hindi films, and television, he was the son of veteran actor Chandrakant Gokhale. Born in Pune in 1945, Gokhale came from a family of cinema pioneers, including his great grandmother Durgabai Kamat, the first female actor of Indian screen, and grandmother Kamlabai Gokhale, the first female child actor in Indian cinema.

Gokhale's directorial debut came with the Marathi film 'Aaghaat' in 2010. He received the National Film Award for Best Actor for 'Anumati.' Married to Vrushali since 1975, they had two daughters, Asawari and Neha. Gokhale was also a successful real estate businessman and a committed social activist, supporting disabled soldiers, children of lepers, and orphan education through his family's foundation.

Retiring from stage due to a throat ailment in 2016, he continued his film career until his last days. Gokhale passed away at 77 in Pune, leaving a legacy in Indian cinema and theatre.
