Mick's Basic Info
Tumblr media
Name: Makana Kaya Birch
Mick’s faceclaims, from what I can recall, haven’t changed much at all since I first picked them out. For the 60s, we have the iconic Annette Funicello, the 80s has Lori Loughlin, 2000-2010 is Phoebe Tonkin, and finally, present day is the beautiful Bailee Madison.
Nicknames: Mick, Kana, Mickie, Mickey/Mickie Mouse, Trouble (by her dad, mostly), and occasionally, Chex Mix (usually only when Viv wants to tease her or piss her off, but it’s a long-standing joke between them)
Age: 20
Date of Birth: December 24
Zodiac: Capricorn
Birthstone: Turquoise
Nationality: American, Scottish, Irish
Sexuality: Straight
Born: A cabin in Tilton, New Hampshire
Current Residence: Camino Capistrano, San Clemente, California
Occupation: (modern) Surf shop worker, (in the 60s) animal sanctuary assistant and occasional back-up waitress at Big Momma’s
Schooling: Graduated high school and began taking online college courses for marine biology
Talents/Skills: Writing music, surfing, gymnastics, she can balance a spoon on her nose, if you want to consider that a talent
Birth order: Only child
Parents: Brady Elliot Birch and McKenzie Blaire Fox
Signature:
Tumblr media
Height: 5’5” or 168cm
Eye Color: Brown with hints of green
Hair Color: Dark brown
Glasses or contact lenses: She likes to wear colored contacts for fun, but they aren’t necessary
Distinguishing features: Scar on her left arm from a knife accident, a tiny burn on the inside of her right elbow from spilled hot coffee, and a small tattoo of Butchy’s initials under her engagement ring
Mannerisms: Drums her fingers on any surface, cooks/bakes when she's stressed, and sings whatever song is stuck in her head at random points through the day
Health: Allergic to pine trees/pine scented things and has vertigo (connected to her severe fear of heights/acrophobia)
Hobbies: knitting, kick-boxing, archery, collecting coins from other states and countries
Greatest flaw (in their opinion): She would probably say how absentminded she can be as she gets distracted rather easily, but her true flaw would be her determination. Whether it has to do with the way she just has to know how something works, even if it means taking that something apart to figure it out, or the way she pushes people to tell her what’s bothering them, her determination is both a great resource and her greatest downfall. She does apologize when she goes too far, but she hardly ever realizes she’s pushed too much while she’s doing it, something that encourages the others to intervene when necessary.
Best quality (in their opinion): Mick would outright say her imagination and, whilst it’s great, her resourcefulness far surpasses that. Mick has always been good at taking random things and using them for something else. Whether it’s using a bread tie to hold two wires together or unlocking a car with a metal clothes hanger to get the keys out, she’s quick on her feet and logical, something that most people can appreciate when in need of her assistance.
Biggest fear(s): Heights and seagulls. As a kid, she wasn’t bothered by either at all, climbing jungle gyms or fire escapes with ease and feeding the seagulls at the beach out of the palm of her hand, but after taking a nasty fall off of a pier at the age of 9 due to a pair of seagulls attacking her during their fight for food, she refuses to engage with either. She avoids seagulls like the plague and refuses to even climb a ladder, let alone look down from any great height. She’s tried multiple times to get over her fears, but to her dismay, nothing’s worked.
Favorite ice cream: Rootbeer or Moose Tracks
Favorite color: Red
Favorite number(s): 53 (the year of her favorite car)
Favorite songs: Maneater by Nelly Furtado, Hey Lover by The Daughters of Eve, and Look What You Made Me Do by Taylor Swift
Favorite movies: The Princess Bride, Dirty Dancing, Pride and Prejudice, The Fast and The Furious (mostly the first movie, but she likes them all in their own way), and Legally Blonde
Favorite TV shows: Bridgerton, The Umbrella Academy, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Riverdale, Sherlock, Friends, How It’s Made, and, of all things, Jeopardy because she loves trying to answer before the contestants
Favorite books: How to Solve Your Own Murder by Kristen Perrin, A Lonely Broadcast by Kel Byron, Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson, Divergent, and Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer
Favorite video games: Undertale, Detroit: Become Human, and What Remains of Edith Finch
A musical they love: Grease and Les Misérables
A place they want to visit most: Morocco and Monaco

Ok, so nobody told me that iPhones transfer all of your stuff like birthdays and everything when you switch phones. I’ve had this phone since last Black Friday, had another iPhone for three years before the screen broke and I had to get this one, and never realized this. I woke up at almost 1 this morning to a very loud ping on my phone, telling me that it’s Mick’s birthday today. I did the math and if my calculations are right, today is the day she was born.
2020 + 16 (her age during Broken Record) = 2036 which is the year that I put in the Prologue. So, yeah! It’s Mick’s birthday today!
I don’t remember making this thing on my phone at all. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure I wrote a Christmas prompt about this a year ago. I’m actually pretty stoked! Time to work on writing something for her birthday!

Just realized I’ve been drawing for 2 hours and now I suddenly don’t have the energy to finish drawing (all I have left are the faces) before I transfer them to a digital version in the morning.
So, here, have some faceless characters that I’ll let you decide if you like or not. Two of them already have stories, but I just wanted to draw them out tonight to get them out of my head.

Felt artistic enough to make the digital version of Malina and Mick. Malina is wearing the first version of her Isle of the Lost outfit. The newer one is different by quite a bit even though I kept the Savage belt, tattoo and feather. I’ll have to post the new one sometime.
Yes, the pose is originally Miss America and Hawkeye, but I thought it fitting of these two in Miracles of Christmas. Also, yes, I forgot the green in Malina’s hair, however that’s a problem for another time.

Love Is A Gift
December 24, 2021
Prompt - ‘Twas The Day Before Christmas
Characters - I think it’s more about who isn’t mentioned at this point lol
Notes - This took me forever to get out but that’s entirely on me. I was very wrong about not having a lot to do today and found that out the hard way. My mom and I were only invited today to go to my cousin’s house for dinner tomorrow so I have no clue when tomorrow’s prompt will even be posted. I haven’t even started it yet, but it will be up, I just don’t know when. And I’m so glad you liked my prompt yesterday, Eleanor! I was stressing over how you'd like it so I’m very grateful you enjoyed it!
Tumblr media
Ah, Christmas Eve. The day for most people to do last-minute gift shopping, run out of tape halfway through wrapping things and wind up downing a bottle of whatever alcohol was lying around as they realized they’d somehow forgotten to buy something for someone and would have to out early in the morning and pray that some store or another would miraculously be open. Sadly for those who were stuck having a birthday on that day, their celebrations were typically cut short due to the upcoming holiday and nobody having the time for another party around the same time.
However, if you’d ask a certain Makana Kaya Birch, she’d tell you it was no big deal having her birthday on Christmas Eve. She’d long since gotten used to putting aside her birthday parties in favor of Christmas celebrations. Even though her parents and other family members had almost always made sure to get her something for her birthday, Mick had grown to be alright with her birthday taking a backseat to Christmas. After all, it was the season of giving, not demanding gifts.
When she and Butchy became a couple, she had to explain to him that, if he wanted to just get her something for Christmas and say it covered both that and her birthday, she’d be fine with that. Butchy didn’t take that very well - nor did anyone else in their friend group, for that matter - but begrudgingly went along with it for Mick’s sake because, all in all, she knew how much of a hit his finances had taken due to the holiday and he knew she was only looking out for him. That didn’t mean he planned on continuing that trend into the next year. After all, she was his fiancée now and he planned on treating her like the queen she was.
Now that it was almost that season once again, Butchy was nearly clueless as to what to give Mick for her birthday.
He wanted it to be something special that would stand out as a birthday gift and not just another present she’d insist could be split as both a birthday and Christmas gift. Lela had suggested a necklace with something engraved on it, but Mick only wore necklaces for special occasions so she wouldn’t risk losing them in the ocean. Miles had given out the idea of getting the girl a new surfboard as she’d talked about wanting one when they hung out at Big Momma’s, but Butchy had discovered that Mack and Brady were already in the process of making one for their daughter. Even Royce and Bentley had pitched their own ideas but Mick already had access to loads of books and he knew for a fact that Mick had far too many colored pencils for him to even bother trying to get the girl new ones she didn’t have already so, while Butchy was grateful for the thought the boys put into their ideas, they were written off pretty easily.
Needless to say, he was quickly running out of ideas.
That was, until one day when Mick told him exactly what she wanted.
Tumblr media
It was a fairly warm, October day and Mick had brought Butchy with her to visit her family. Her father had signed up to bring his ‘41 Ford station wagon - the same car Tanner drove both in the movie and in day-to-day life - to a car show and invited them to come and check out all of the cars on display. Much to Butchy’s surprise, the car show had a special tent set aside where motorcycles could be shown off. Mick led the way through the area, having navigated it year after year with her dad, talking to people everywhere she went while Butchy observed her fondly and examined each car he came across with a newfound delight.
By the time they’d gotten to the motorcycle tent at the back of the field, it was nearly time to head home for the night. It didn’t take long for Butchy to get lost in the range of motorcycles and Mick wasn’t surprised when he started talking with the owner of almost every bike he came across. Once they’d made their way to the row of bikes from the ‘60s, Mick split off from her fiancé and headed for the same bike she looked at every year - a ‘62 Harley-Davidson Panhead. Butchy had seen her eyeing the bike before in a magazine back at his workshop, but never thought she’d take an interest in it. As he finished chatting with a couple who owned a cherry red, ‘63 Indian Chief he’d taken a major interest in, Butchy made his way over to where Mick was conversing with the woman who owned the ocean blue Panhead she liked so much.
“I wish I could have one of these,” Mick told the woman. “It must be so amazing to cruise around on.”
“Oh, it is,” the woman claimed with a smile. “My father bought it when it first came out and I used to ride with him all the time. I was in an accident a few years ago and now I can’t ride it so I have no use for it now other than for show, sadly.”
Mick sighed and nodded in understanding, running her hand along the side of the bike, “That’s a shame. No beast like this should be locked in a cage.”
“You took the words right out of my mouth,” the woman replied.
After that, it didn’t take much for Butchy to latch onto the idea of getting Mick a bike of her own for her birthday.
Tumblr media
By the time Butchy actually had his hands on the bike of Mick’s choice - the Panhead she’d admired - it was mid-November. Not only was the motorcycle a hot-ticket item, but finding it in the same ocean blue Mick loved was even harder as, apparently, it was a rare color. Hiding the bike was another problem. He couldn’t very well leave it in his garage - or anywhere else in his home, for that matter - and he definitely couldn’t leave it with Miles since she loved just going over there at random times just to hang out with Miles and her “new brothers.” The only place left he could keep it where she wouldn’t find it, was at Tanner’s house. The surfer was only ever home to sleep and Mick never went over there as she knew, if she needed Tanner for any reason, he’d be at Big Momma’s or with Lela at their house.
Tanner and Mick had always gotten along really well and Butchy was grateful that they were, especially in times like these. The surfer had readily agreed to let Butchy use his garage because, first off, he only used it when it rained and, second, it was under lock and key at all times. So, after Tanner gave Butchy the spare key to his house for when they wanted to work on the bike, the motorcycle sat in the surfer’s garage, waiting for Mick’s birthday to come around.
Not long after they’d found a temporary shelter for the bike, Butchy, Lela, the Murphy boys, and, eventually, the rest of the Rodent crew and a few of the surfers, began working on the bike. Some took to painting designs onto the metal, others took the leather seat off so they could add some embroidery work to it, and a few with trained eyes and steady hands began engraving a special emblem of theirs into the sides of the gas tank. With everyone working on it together, the motorcycle was finished on the nineteenth of December.
Miraculously, they’d evaded Mick’s detection throughout the process, using excuses for their whereabouts and ducking out whenever they had the chance. Butchy and Lela had to sneak out after Mick went to sleep some nights just to finish up what others had left for them during the day. There had been a few close calls, but either Mick didn’t seem to notice or she pretended to not know for their sake. Either way, it had worked out and they had completed their work on the bike a lot sooner than Butchy had originally planned.
The day Mick’s birthday rolled around, Butchy decided to go all out. He made her breakfast in bed, they spent the morning in bed together reading and talking, then, when she decided to get up for the day, he decided to help her do her hair - something he didn’t do too often but knew Mick loved. They went to her family’s home for a few hours just to spend time with them and Butchy was glad to see Mick so excited over her brand-new surfboard as well as a few pieces of equipment he knew absolutely nothing about, but Mick seemed happy to receive. After staying at Mack and Brady’s for lunch, they returned to Butchy and Lela’s home with them to attend a Christmas Eve party that Big Momma’s was throwing.
Well, it wasn’t so much a Christmas Eve party as it was a surprise party, but Mick didn’t need to know that, did she?
Lela and some of the girls helped Mick to get ready for the party, distracting her just long enough for Butchy to sneak out with the guys, bring the motorcycle from Tanner’s house to Big Momma’s and return home before his fiancée was any wiser. Around five that afternoon, they left the house for Big Momma’s taking the time to walk there instead of hitching a ride in any of the available vehicles which wasn’t odd seeing as it was seventy degrees and still fairly sunny outside. Once they neared the restaurant, Tanner and Lela, as well as a few of the others from the group, took off in a run for the building, chattering about how excited they were for the party so it wouldn’t seem out of place - not that it would in the first place as Mick knew how excited everyone got for one of those parties.
The majority of the group went inside first, allowing Mack and Brady to enter ahead of their daughter and her fiancé so they could see the look on her face when she realized what was happening. Butchy made sure to enter before Mick, holding the second set of doors open for her and watching her face as everyone collectively yelled a combination of “Surprise!” and “Happy Birthday!” The reaction was instantaneous - a squeak of surprise, a smile that her hands rose to cover once she realized what was happening, and wide eyes that scanned the room and took note of every single face in the crowd. To Butchy, her reaction was priceless.
Once the birthday girl had finished making her way through the room, hugging people and thanking them for attending the party, Mick settled into a chair in the middle of the room with the rest of her family. Lela quickly slid her a plate full of food, having set one aside as she knew firsthand just how fast the food table’s contents would be depleted. After nearly an hour of conversing with the other partygoers and enjoying time with her friends, Mick was handed the first of many presents.
Bentley had given her a sketchbook filled with artwork he’d done of her and the people in attendance, writing a message on the front cover of the book for only her to read. Royce had enlisted the help of Mack and Brady to get Mick a replica of a magic necklace from a book series they’d recently finished reading. Lela’s gift was a set of matching charm bracelets that they both could add to, but they shared two beads in common - a surfboard and a motorcycle. Miles had chosen to give Mick a leatherbound journal - something he’d never admit to making himself - as he knew just how much the girl loved to write about her life in-between worlds.
After all of the gifts were given and Mick was surrounded by a small pile of things, Butchy stepped forward and took her by the hand, leading her to the side and telling her to close her eyes. Once she had, he gestured for the motorcycle to be brought up behind her so that, when Mick turned around again, it would be the first thing she would see.
“On the count of three,” Butchy spoke softly, “turn around.”
Mick nodded, a wondering smile crossing her face. Once Butchy started counting, the majority of those present joined in, watching as Mick turned to see the blue motorcycle in all its glory. The seat was embroidered with flowers and Mick’s initials, the Rodents’ emblem and a single crown were engraved into the metal of the gas tank, and the ocean blue parts of the bike were now a beachy scene, a few little surfers painted in the water while others stood on the sand. The biggest surprise to Mick was the painting on the sides of what appeared to be her family’s destiny board - it was so realistic she had to touch it to make sure it wasn’t actual wood taken from the board.
“It’s a real surfers motorcycle,” Miles chuckled, settling a hand on Mick’s shoulder as she rounded the bike another time with wide eyes.
After examining the bike in detail and finding out who had done what to it - she wasn’t shocked to hear that Bentley and Miles had helped with the paint job and metalwork, but was pleasantly surprised to hear that Royce had helped Lela and Butchy with the embroidery work - Mick had practically launched herself at Butchy, wrapping her arms around him as tightly as she could muster.
“You do realize you’re going to have to teach me how to ride, right?” Mick asked in a whisper, her brilliant smile hidden in the crook of Butchy’s neck as he held her close.
Butchy chuckled, “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
“I almost ran you over the last time we tried,” Mick laughed softly as she pulled back enough to see him. “Are you sure you’re ready for that again?”
With a smile and a nod, Butchy agreed. “As long as I can keep my foot intact this time, I’ll be okay.”
“Heard that!” Miles chimed in from his seat at the table they’d all been sat at.
“I think you were meant to,” Mick claimed with a teasing grin, giggling as Miles squawked out a “Hey!” in retaliation.
As the party began to end, people began leaving for home, wishing Mick a happy birthday on their way out. Once it was down to Mick and her family, they gathered up everything they’d come with and everything Mick had received and headed for home. Mack, Brady, and the Murphy boys stayed the night at Butchy and Lela’s house at Mick’s insistence, Miles and Butchy taking turns pushing the bike home before leaving it locked in the garage and joining the rest of the family in the house to watch movies. At the end of the night, Mick and Butchy retired to bed, leaving most of Mick’s gifts strewn about in the living room for the time being.
“You didn’t have to go through all that trouble so I could have a motorcycle,” Mick spoke as she slid her legs under the covers. “I would’ve been happy no matter what you’d given me. Heck, you could’ve given me a Ziploc baggie filled with Cheetos and I would’ve been happy.”
“I know,” Butchy replied, turning to Mick with a smile as he made his way toward their bed, “but you’re my fiancée and I adore you more than words will ever be able to describe. You deserve so much more than I might ever be able to give you.”
As Butchy found his way into the bed beside her, Mick reached out for him, placing a hand on his cheek. “Your love is all I’ll ever need.”
Deciding not to argue with such an endearing sentiment, Butchy pressed a kiss to the palm of Mick’s hand before pulling her close to him. “Happy birthday, beautiful.”
“Thank you,” Mick replied with a cheesy grin. “Merry Christmas Eve, handsome.”

Rite of Passage
Monthly Prompts Day 30
August 30th - Bash
Characters: Miles, Royce, Bentley and Mick (OCs)
The day Miles had gotten his letters from his brothers, he’d gone above and beyond to make sure everything in his house was ready for the boys. He’d moved an old bookshelf into the boys’ room so that the boys oculd fill it with books of their choosing. He’d even made sure to stock the fridge and freezer with foods for the boys. The next day, Miles cornered Mick, the girl who was the closest thing to a sister Miles had ever had, and asked her if she’d mind helping him set up his spare room for the two boys. Mick had readily agreed, taking Miles with her to the department store in the mall so they could pick out some bedding and other items for the younger boys.
They’d returned with far more than Miles thought was necessary, but Mick had insisted upon most of it so she could spoil her new little brothers. The two of them set up the room, making it so the boys each had their own side of the room. Mick had taken the time to borrow Miles’ wood-burning kit, etching Royce and Bentley’s names and some little details into the wooden headboards of their respective beds so the it felt more personal. When the job was done, Miles and Mick sat in the living room and watched movies until nearly midnight.
Miles slept on the couch that night as he’d insisted Mick take his bed. Around eight in the morning, a knock sounded from the front door, waking Miles from his slumber. Miles had made his way to the door, calling out an “I’m comin’!” when the person knocked again. He unlocked the door and pulled it open, drowsily staring into a pair of caramel brown eyes. Miles rubbed his eyes before looking again, this time seeing another set of eyes, steely blue this time, peeking up at him. Miles didn’t need to look much further than that before enveloping his little brothers in a tight hug.
“What’re you two doing here?” Miles asked quickly as his brothers returned his embrace. “I thought you were coming next week.”
“We wanted to see you,” Bentley claimed, his voice muffled by Miles’ pajama shirt.
Miles ushered his brothers into the house, making them leave their bags on the couch and get comfortable before he made his way to his room to wake up Mick. Bentley moved around the living room, investigating pictures and items Miles had left around on counters as he went. Royce had sat on the floor in front of the couch, taking up a book from the coffee table and reading the summary within the cover before flipping to the beginning of the book and beginning to read.
Miles pulled Mick into the living room by her wrist, the brunette girl just barely having the chance to pull her hair into an unbrushed ponytail before she was whipped into the room. Miles smiled at his brothers as he spoke to them, “RJ, Benny, this is Makana Birch, otherwise known as Mick. Mick, these are my brothers, Royce James and Bentley Robert.”
“Is she your girlfriend?” Bentley questioned as he placed a toy motorcycle down on the coffee table. “She’s pretty.”
Both Mick and Miles’ faces turned pink at the comment, Miles stuttering out his answer while Mick spoke to the boys, “Thank you, but no, we’re not dating. I’m engaged.”
Royce stood from his spot by the coffee table, keeping one finger tucked into the book he’d been reading so he wouldn’t lose his place. He held a hand out to Mick and gave her a smile. “I’m Royce. It’s nice to meet you, Mick.”
“It’s nice to meet you too, Royce,” Mick said with a smile, giving the boy a hug instead of a handshake. “It’ll be nice to have some little brothers around.” After letting the boy go, Mick noticed him holding the book she’d been reading, The Outsiders. “I see you like my book.”
Royce looked down at the book before quickly holding it out to Mick. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you lose where you are in it. I should’ve left it on the table.”
Mick giggled, ruffling Royce’s head of curls. “Relax, kiddo! I don’t mind at all. How far did you get?”
“A couple of pages,” Royce replied softly.
Bentley chucked as he moved to stand on the other side of Mick. “He’s always got his nose in a book,” the fourteen-year old claimed. “That’s why he never goes to dances at school.”
“Not much of a partier, huh?” Mick asked, to which Royce shook his head. “Well, I suppose you’ll be a feel a bit weird being the center of attention at the big bash at Big Momma’s tonight, then.”
“Party?” Miles cut in, “What party?”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The party Mick had been talking about was one she’d asked her friends to organize late the night before. After Miles had fallen asleep on the couch, Mick had made her way to Big Momma’s, catching a few of the bikers and a handful of surfers before they left for the night. She’d told them to ask Big Momma if they could host a bash for the next night as they were going to have a few new visitors and she wanted them to have the usual welcoming ceremony at the hangout. After a bit of talking with her friends, they’d agreed to keep it simple so as to not shock the two boys too much, but still planned on having some of the festivities they always had when throwing a shindig. In Mick’s eyes, they needed to have a big celebration for these boys; Royce and Bentley had made Miles so much happier in just the short amount of time they’d been there.
Besides, Mick had been the last one the group had chosen to have a party for and she wanted Bentley and Royce’s sudden appearance in town to be no different than her sudden appearance in their world.
Mick kept the reason for the party a secret from Royce and Bentley, telling only Miles about it, so that the oldest of the brothers would be prepared for the big party. Using Mick’s old Belvedere, Miles and Mick had taken the boys on a shopping trip to the nearby shopping strip after lunch, Mick insisting on paying with the money she’d earned while working at her dad’s surfboard shop. After two hours of shopping and helping the younger boys decide what they wanted, Mick and Miles returned to Miles’ house so the boys could unpack and prepare for the party.
Mick had left not long after, deciding she needed to get herself ready for Royce and Bentley’s bash and make sure Butchy and Lela were ready for it as well. When the group met up later on, Mick allowed Miles to walk with Royce while Bentley talked her ear off about how much he liked the carvings on his bed. The youngest of the Murphy brothers was easily excited about anything and everything, Mick discovered while they walked. The blue-eyed boy had stopped every few steps to pick up a seashell or some sea glass, showing it to Mick with a look in his eyes that made Mick want to be just as animated about it. Royce, on the other hand, had fallen in love with the book Mick had let him borrow, talking animatedly to Miles about it although Miles had never read it for himself.
By the time they’d reached Big Momma’s, Royce and Bentley had practically forgotten about the party that had been the whole reason they’d been walking along the water in the first place. Miles and Mick took advantage of this fact, making sure the two boys were in front of them as they climbed the front steps of the restaurant. Both Mick and Miles watched in anticipation as Royce and Bentley pushed open the swinging doors that led to where the party was being held.
The look on the two boys’ faces when they realized that the big bash was for them, was something nobody in that room would ever forget.

The Artist’s Abilities
Monthly Prompts Day 14
August 14th - Latte
AU Used: Coffee Shop AU and Modern AU
Characters: Butchy (Teen Beach Movie) and Makana “Mick” Birch (OC)
Notes: The idea for this is based off of how my parents met. I think it’s cute!
Five months, one week and three days; that was how long Mick had been working the overnight shift at Leaves and Beans Cafe. She knew all of the bikers and truck drivers that came in by name already. Most of them only stopped in for a donut or two and some coffee, but, then again, she always kept it fresh just for them and they admired that. According to many of them, the last person who had the overnight shift was a boy who “couldn’t tell his ass from his elbow” and didn’t know how to change the filters. Once or twice a night, a few of the local police would stop by for some coffee and to check in on Mick as she was the only one there from six at night until six the next morning.
Over all, Mick really liked her job.
Now and then, a few stoners would come in, high as a kite, trying to use ticket from the nearby arcade to pay for their midnight munchies. The funniest one Mick remembered was when Officer Martinez had been sitting behind the counter, playing cards with Mick when a very intoxicated woman stumbled into the shop, slapping a crumpled and tattered Monopoly dollar on the counter, insisting that it was her normal form of currency. One charge of public intoxication later, the woman was banned from the store until six months after her release from prison. Mick wasn’t exactly sure what part of that night she liked most.
Mick’s favorite night, however, was about four months into her job at the cafe. That night, a mechanic from an auto repair shop across the street stopped in. The man had never come in during Mick’s night shift before but he seemed nice enough. He seemed fairly shy at first, simply asking for a coffee, black, with a breakfast sandwich as he was going to be at work for another three or four hours and didn’t have another break to go on. It was already after midnight that night, so Mick threw in another sandwich that she decided to pay for and an energy shot that she had brought from home.
She could make it through the night no problem if she made herself some espresso later on, but this guy looked exhausted already and would need some form of a pick-me-up.
The next time he stopped by, she greeted him with civility as though she’d known him for a while. The mechanic only asked for a coffee, this time adding in a double shot of espresso. He gave her an extra three dollars from what he had to pay, leaving before she got the chance to stop him. It was a simple payback for the energy shot and sandwich she had given him the first time.
Over the next two weeks, he stopped in only when he knew she had next to nobody in the shop. After his fifth visit, Mick confronted her coworkers about the man. Nobody in the cafe knew his name, but a girl from the morning shift, an old classmate of Mick’s named Johanna, claimed that he stopped in to get a coffee every now and then, but when the place was next to empty, he would order a latte with quadruple espresso and a bacon breakfast sandwich.
When the man came in again, she asked if he had ever signed up for their savings card. He told her no and that nobody had ever told him there was one. Mick responded with the fact that, if he ordered any coffees, teas, or lattes, it would get stamped and, after fifteen stamps, he’d get a free drink of his choice. All she needed was his name for the card as she had plenty of truckers, bikers and cops in the card system already.
The man agreed to sign up, taking a piece of paper from Mick and signing his name on it so she could put it into the computer and give him his card. Once it printed out, she applied five stamps to it and handed it back to the man that she now knew as Butchy.
After three more weeks and fourteen stamps had accumulated on Butchy’s card, Mick waited until the clock neared the time Butchy had chosen as the time he would always stop in. She started up the espresso machine, ground up the beans and stamped them, preparing a quadruple espresso while she waited for the milk to be ready. She glanced at the clock, seeing just three minutes left before the door would open and Butchy would be in to get his drink.
Mick smiled as she poured the milk into the cup with the espresso, picking up a toothpick from the counter and going to work on something simple for her newest friend. She took a couple napkins from the nearby dispenser, scrawling out a message for Butchy as quickly as she could. Mick took one last look at the clock, seeing the familiar shine of Butchy’s motorcycle’s headlights as he pulled up outside and she ducked into the back room to start on the next batch of sandwiches that the one o’clock truckers would ask for.
Mick heard the front door open and close with a chime and listened as Butchy called out for her from the other room, yet she continued on working, deciding that she would hear from him sooner or later. Mick hummed along to the radio as she cooked up some sausage patties. After about five minutes, she heard the door open and close once more.
She peeked out the small window that lead from the kitchen to the main area, but nobody was there apart from herself and the guy on an advertisement for a sugar-filled soda they sold out of a cooler by the door. Mick finished the sandwiches after she made a dozen of them, wrapping them and labelling them so she could leave them on the counter for the truckers that would come in soon. As Mick placed the tray of food on the counter by the register, she noticed that the napkin and drink were gone.
With a sigh, she realized Butchy either didn’t notice the note or had probably thrown it out. She knew better; he was a handsome man and the chances of him being single were slim. If he had a girlfriend, good for them. A minute later, a set of bright headlights shone into the store, the rumble of an engine following soon after as the motorcycle it belonged to pulled away from the shop.
*ping ping*
Mick took up her phone from where she had left it by the espresso machine, seeing a new message from an unknown number.
“Thank you for the artwork on my latte. How did you know how I like it? And how did you draw that in the foam? I had no idea you could see the emblem on my bike from inside the shop, but I guess without the headlights, it’s easier to see it. You’re quite the artist, either way. Maybe we could go on a date to an art gallery or something. If you’re up for it, let me know and we can figure it out next time I stop in. If not, just ignore me and I’ll take the hint, ok? All the best, Butchy.”
For the longest time after that, Mick had a hard time wiping her smile off of her face.

Monthly Prompts Day 13
August 13th - Buff
AU Used: None
Characters: Makana “Mick” Birch and Miles (OCs)
Notes: Another short, but sweet one. This feels a bit rushed on my end, but I’ve barely had any down time today so I needed to pump this out before getting some sleep. I’m doing even more stuff tomorrow, but I hope that I’ll be able to get tomorrow’s prompt to be longer so I feel like I’m actually doing something productive with these prompts.
A simple hike with Miles, they said. It’ll be fun, they said.
Fucking liars.
It was supposed to be hike through one of the trails the Rodents used for “bonding trips.” The trail was usually only used when someone wanted to join the Rodent crew - initiations as Mick had called them - but the last person to join had been Struts and her brother Skids, almost two years prior. Struts and Skids - otherwise known as Sherry and Sterling Ray - had been friends with most of the existing members of The Rodents, so the trail was bypassed in favor of having a party for the siblings instead.
Needless to say, the trail was left unused and unmaintained for quite some time.
Miles had decided to not tell Mick about how little the trail was used. He also told her not to bring anything more than the picnic basket he had packed that morning. The hike they would be taking would only take a half hour at most, if Miles could recall it properly. Mick was ready to strangle him after only ten minutes of their hike.
Miles forgot to take into account that Mick had a phobia of spiders and the trail was littered with them. After pushing open the gate that lead to the trail, the pair had been met with a thick spiderweb about the size of a large cookie sheet tray.
He had also forgotten that Mick was considerably shorter than his 6′2″ stature and would have a harder time climbing over any fallen trees or bigger rocks. Not even five minutes into the walk, they had found that one of the bigger trees along the way had fallen onto the untamed pathway. While Miles had no problem climbing over the tree, Mick had to use a nearby boulder to jump onto the trunk of the tree before sliding over the other side to where Miles was.
Miles found most of it funny. Mick did not.
Once they had almost reached the peak where Miles had planned their little sibling picnic, they found that the land on the side of the path had shifted, forcing chunks of rocks and tree limbs onto the hiking path. Miles, the ever confident man he was, made Mick stand to the side as he began pushing what he could out of the way. Mick checked her watch after a few minutes of watching Miles try to move a rock that met his chest in height to the side of the path; Miles had barely moved it five feet.
With a huffed sigh, Mick pushed herself off of the ground and used what energy she had reserved by finding a way around things Miles climbed over on the hike up the mountain, to move the rest of the debris off the pathway. By the time Miles had finally gotten the rock to the side of the trail, Mick had gotten all but one chunk of tree off the road, leaving the twenty-year-old male dumbfounded.
“You may be taller, brother dear,” Mick claimed when questioned about how she’d cleared everything so fast, “but I think we both know who’s the buff one in this.” To emphasize this, Mick flexed her muscles, taking on the stereotypical, bicep pose to show off her “buffness” as she so graciously put it.
A moment later, Mick found her face covered in powder from a jelly donut Miles had bought for the trip.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The walk back had been easier for both of them as, when they came across something Mick couldn’t climb over as easily as Miles, Miles would stop and help her by boosting her up so she could grab something and climb the rest of the way. While the hike up the mountain had been almost an hour long, with the two of them working together, the walk back down the path had only been about forty-five minutes long. Miles had even given a very exhausted Mick a piggyback ride from the gate of the trail to his motorcycle.
“So, you’re the tough one here, huh?” Miles asked as he set Mick down in front of his bike.
Mick shook her head, taking her helmet from the back seat of the motorcycle. “I said I was buff, not tough. You saw me with those spiders, Miles. I’m not exactly the fearless, tough guy, am I?”
“That’s for sure,” Miles agreed, ruffling Mick’s hair, much to her annoyance. Mick balled up her fist and landed a punch, square on Miles’ shoulder. “Aye! That hurt!”
Mick slid on her helmet so her hair was safe, swinging her leg over the motorcycle and sitting on the back of the motorcycle with a proud, yet sleepy smile on her face. “Don’t mess with me, you giant tree. I may me small, but I’m stronger than you and your twiggy arms any day.”
“Oh, really?” Miles asked as he climbed onto his bike, rubbing over the area of his arm that he was sure would bruise overnight. “This twiggy tree could just ditch you on the side of the road so you could walk home.”
“You won’t though,” Mick claimed as she leaned her head onto Miles’ back and looped her arms around his stomach. “You love me too much to do that.”
Miles chuckled, lightly patting one of Mick’s hands before he started up his bike and began to move it from its parking spot. “You’ve got that right.”

Tik Tok
Monthly Prompts Day 11
August 11th - Cannibal
AU Used: None
Characters: Makana “Mick Birch and Miles (OCs)
Notes: This was so hard to come up with an idea for, so, while this may be a short, silly and stupid idea, it was all my heat-exhausted brain came up with 😂
Mick’s world was very - how would Miles put it nicely? -  creative. Compared to the world Miles was used to, it was very loud, vibrant and expressive. While Miles preferred the quiet that his world possessed, he had to admit to himself that he liked certain aspects of Mick’s world. One of the first things Miles had been introduced to, and liked, was a thing on Mick’s phone called Tik Tok.
Mick had been singing one segment of a song and, while Miles liked her voice, he was frustrated that she could only recall that one part. Mick would sing along to one song, doing arm movements while she did and, when she finished that small piece of the song, she would continue whatever she had already been doing, making Miles confused. After a few hours of this, Miles decided to ask her what it was all about and, she went all out. Mick explained what the app was and how to use it, even creating an account for Miles to use on a phone she had given him.
He had no intention on using it for anything other than seeing what people his age were doing. That mindset lasted all of four hours. Miles figured out there was a camera on the front of the phone while he was scrolling through the app and it unexpectedly opened. Mick explained how it was used to record the videos and how to use the back camera as well, but Miles insisted he only wanted to keep watching videos and didn’t want people to see him in any.
Mick received a call from her parents only an hour later, telling her they needed her to bring them something at the surf shop they owned. When she left, Miles made sure to lock up the front door just in case before he escaped to the backyard to try making some Tik Toks. After almost a half hour, Miles had made himself a nice tripod out of two rakes, a broom, duct tape and a red Solo cup. He was rather proud of himself. He had made two videos so far; one video was a duet to one of Mick’s videos and another was a dance video to one of the songs Miles had heard Mick singing earlier.
Miles decided to take a break after posting the second video, sitting on the back porch, listening to audios to see if there were any he thought he could do. A few minutes later, Miles found a very popular dance to the song Cannibal by Kesha. Miles found the dance to be simpler than the other one he had done so he stood from his seat and positioned his phone into the solo cup so the camera would record him while he danced. Miles set the timer and used the extra few seconds to fix his hair before the song began.
It wasn’t until the recording stopped and Miles checked the video that he realized Mick had come out onto the back porch without his knowledge and, upon seeing him dancing to something she knew, had joined him. Miles acknowledged that she had even mouthed along to the song, something he hadn’t even thought to do.
Although embarrassed, Miles still posted the video, tagging Mick in the description. Mick’s followers decided, after Mick shared the video on her own account, that they should also follow Mick’s “cousin”  as they were both very talented and (to quote more than a few comments on Miles’ videos) very attractive.

The Madam’s Dress
Monthly Prompts Day 10
August 10th - Purple Girdle
AU Used: None
Characters: Kiki, Giggles, Lela, CheeChee, Struts (Teen Beach Movie) and Makana “Mick” Birch
Notes: I have nothing much to say other than Aunt Dolly is my actual great-great aunt who became a madam in her early twenties (around 1905, if my family’s history records are right) and kept the business until she died. I really had no ideas for this one, but I remembered my mom telling me a story like this a while ago, so I used it.
Kiki, one of the surfer girls Mick had gotten pretty close to over the years, had returned from her family vacation early after receiving word that Mick and Butchy were now engaged. In typical Kiki fashion, she invited all of Mick’s closest girl friends to her house for a small party. As the girls were talking about Mick and Butchy’s wedding, the topic of having a different, more comfortable dress for the reception party came to be. Mick told the girls that she would like to wear something blue for the party if she could and, while most of the girls agreed, Kiki seemed quiet. Giggles nudged her a bit, but it seemed like the brunette was deep in thought about something.
A minute or so later, Kiki jolted forward with excitement. “Oh, Mick, I have the perfect dress in mind! My great aunt gave it to me when she last visited and it just might fit you.”
Mick and the rest of the girls looked on as Kiki jumped from her chair and ran into her bedroom. The girls shared a look, making small talk as they listened to Kiki in the other room, throwing things around. Soon enough, Kiki bounded back into the room, all but throwing the lid off of a long, rectangle box. Kiki pulled the blue fabric out of the box, holding it up for the girls to see.
“Uh, Kiks?” CheeChee began, “It’s nice ‘n all, but it’s missin’ some stuff.”
Kiki glanced at the dress for a moment before shrugging. “Yeah, Aunt Dolly gave me a girdle to go with it. It’s purple, but it looks dark blue with the blue lace over it.” Kiki pulled the purple corset from the box, holding it under the front layer of the sheer, lace dress. “See?”
Mick stood from her seat, placing her juice on a table before taking the dress and girdle from Kiki. “I’ll try it on. I might need help with the corset lacing.”
The girl group nodded, watching Mick walk to the bathroom with doubtful looks on their faces. Struts turned to Kiki with an eyebrow raised. “Why did your aunt give you that? It’s pretty much see-through.”
Kiki sat back in her chair, taking a sip of her drink before smiling. “Well, you see, Aunt Dolly is a madam and she always made a lot of dresses like that for her girls. I loved helping her design dresses when I was little, so she made one for me as a surprise gift. She even gave me the purple girdle to go with it. It was originally designed for a girl in her house, but she gave it to me to match the dress instead. I think it’s sweet.”
“Can we backtrack a little?” Giggles started, closing her eyes tightly. “Did you say Aunt Dolly, the Aunt Dolly that gave us all five dollars at your tenth birthday party, she’s a madam?”
“Yeah,” Kiki giggled, “I just said that.”
“Um, guys,” Lela interrupted softly. “Am I the only one who doesn’t know what a madam is?”
“No,” both CheeChee and Struts claimed in unison.
Kiki and Giggles shared a look before Kiki explained the meaning. “Well, a madam is a woman who runs and owns a brothel. She owns all of the people who work under her and is usually very well educated.”
“So,” CheeChee began bluntly, “your aunt runs a house of ill repute?”
“Yeah, pretty much,” Kiki agreed, smiling brightly at her friends.
“And that girdle is from one of those girls?” Struts asked quickly.
Kiki shook her head. “Well, the girl who owned it wasn’t a prostitute, she was just a dancer in the show hall. Even if she was a prostitute, I wouldn’t see anything wrong with it as Aunt Dolly always kept good care of her girls. Besides, it’s been cleaned multiple times and most of it was replaced so it would fit me better.”
“How come we never knew this?” Lela questioned softly, resting her forehead in her hands.
“You never asked,” Kiki replied. “Now that you do, you should know that most of my family takes great pride in Aunt Dolly as she’s very highly regarded and successful because of her profession. She even uses her college degrees to teach the girls that she takes in. Most of the women were either on the streets or had no other way to get money, so she believes teaching them will eventually help them move onto better things when they feel ready to. Aunt Dolly is a great woman, really.”
Mick sauntered back into the room a moment later, the purple girdle secured under the berry blue dress, turning the fabric an almost violet shade of blue. “Could you girls help me lace the corset to the dress?” she asked, grinning gently at her friends. “I can almost get the laces through the holes in the dress, but I keep getting my nails caught.”
Lela and Giggles rose from their seats, helping to thread and secure the dress and corset together on Mick. Mick twirled in the dress once she was completely secured in it, watching as the skirt billowed around her calves. The dress, although sheer from the shoulders to the waistline, had three layers of fabric for the skirt; the bottom layer was a simple, silk tulle, the next layer up was a soft, berry blue, cotton that hid the tulle fairly well, then, the third layer was the same floral lace that the top of the dress had been made with.
“Are you sure you wouldn’t mind me borrowing this, Kiki?” Mick asked, running her hands over the soft fabric.
Kiki waved Mick off with a hand. “Go ahead. I only ever wore it once and I can’t stand all of the laces on the girdle. If you like it that much, keep it.”
Mick giggled happily, twirling around in her new dress. “Please let your aunt know that I think she made this wonderfully. I think my favorite part is that adorable purple girdle. I’m going to go show this off to Butchy and I’ll be right back.” With that, Mick took up her purse and ran out the front door of Kiki’s house.
The room became quiet as Kiki set the box for the dress on Mick’s seat. Struts sighed loudly from her seat next to CheeChee, “Is nobody going to tell her about that purple girdle’s story?”
“Nope,” Lela, Giggles and CheeChee said consecutively.
“I won’t either.” Kiki let out a small laugh, “Well, at least not until after the party.”

At the End of the Day
 Monthly Prompts Day 3
August 3rd - ATM (I’m using it as “At That Moment” as I’m showcasing different important moments)
AU Used: None
Characters: Butchy (TBM), Makana “Mick” Birch, Miles (OCs)
All words in bolded italics are lyrics. I did change the lyrics a little to fit the story, but the rest is the same.
In that moment, Miles knew it was over for him. Well, if he had to be entirely honest with himself, he’d known his chances were over a long time ago.
I was fine with the ones who would come into our lives now and again. I was fine 'cause I knew that they didn't really matter until you.
His best friend had always been Butchy. The two of them had grown up together, worked together, and even created their motorcycle gang together. They had been inseparable for most of their lives. Then he saw her and couldn’t keep himself from falling.
I was fine when she came and we fought like it was all some silly game. Over her, who she'd choose. After all those years I never thought I'd lose.
Makana, she’d said her name was. Such a beautiful name for a beautiful girl, Miles had thought. He fell for her way with words and her love of adventure. She wormed his way into his life and he didn’t mind. He danced with her at the big shindig, but only for a while before she was whisked away by her friends. That was the same night Butchy began to show an interest in the bubbly brunette.
It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over? It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over? You won and she chose you and she loved you and she's gone. It's over, isn't it? Why can't I move on?
After seeing the two of them begin to fall for each other, Miles made the decision to stick to the background. He didn’t need to be a third wheel in their relationship.
War and glory, reinvention.
It didn’t take long for Makana to start seeing Miles in a brotherly light. Miles accepted his new role without hesitation, watching from the sidelines as their relationship progressed. After almost two years, Makana ran to Miles with an announcement; Butchy had proposed.
Fusion, freedom, her attention.
Even if he were offered a chance to go back and do it all over again, perhaps even attempt to gain Makana’s affections for himself... Miles knew he would never do such a thing. They were too happy together. Aside from that, he was happy to see them both happy. That was all he needed.
Out in daylight my potential.
The wedding came within the year. Miles found himself dressed in his best, standing with purpose next to Butchy as the couple exchanged vows and rings. Miles cheered harder than most as the two were married in front of the crowd of friends and family. At the reception, both Butchy and Makana ended up dancing with Miles. A photograph of Miles and Butchy slow dancing was framed and proudly displayed over the fireplace in Makana and Butchy’s house. Miles kept the pictures from that night on the wall in his living room, nestled into a collection of pictures of his family members.
Bold, precise, experimental.
Almost three years later, they had a baby, a son they named Milo. They later told Miles they had named the baby after him as they shared a birthday. Miles took his role as Uncle Miles very seriously. He bought Milo everything the little one could’ve ever wanted, even setting aside a room in his own house for the boy for whenever Milo wanted to stay the night. He treated Milo as though he was his own.
What does it matter? It's already done. Now I've got to be there for their son.
Four years and nine months later, another member was added to the family. Their daughter, Lola, was born into an already close-knit family. Uncle Miles stepped up once again, taking the two children out on his motorcycle, bringing them out for ice cream and to drive-in movies. The two kids always went home raving about how much fun they had with Uncle Miles and how they wished it lasted longer. Miles found a way to make room for both of the children in his house, just in case. He never could turn down their puppy dog eyes.
You won and she chose you and she loves you and she’s yours.
Miles found it easy to see Makana as his adopted sister. There had never really been any competition between himself and Butchy over Makana’s feelings. One look between Makana and Butchy and he could see the intense love between them. He was happy for them. He always had been. Miles ended up dating on and off before realizing he never really felt a strong romantic connection with anyone. He was perfectly fine with focusing on himself and his family, both adopted and otherwise.
At the end of the day, he had found happiness.
It's over, isn't it?
I’m glad that I’ve moved on.

Accidental Trip
Monthly Prompts Day 16
August 16th - What is the time?
AU Used: None
Characters: Tanner, Lela, Mack and Brady (Teen Beach Movie) and Makana “Mick” Birch (OC)
The machine that brought Mick, her family and her friends between the real world and the movie world had always worked properly. She had used it for almost a year now and had never really had any issue with it apart from when the mechanism that froze time had been stolen. Mick’s dad, Brady, had designed the machine and, with the help of his daughter and wife, got it working for travel between the two worlds.
Everyone in Mick’s family had used it before and had seen both the future and the movie world of 1962. Not once did the machine malfuntion. Not once did anything break on it.
Why did it have to pick now of all times to act out?!
Mick had decided to leave early that day, wishing to spend some time with her cousin, Hudson, before he had to leave for his first year of college. She had gotten into the machine and closed it, waiting for the machine to begin whirring so it would take her from her boyfriend’s movie world to her world of modern day California. However, she could tell something was wrong when, after a moment of whirring, the machine let out a high-pitched screech and started sparking. Mick tried opening the door she had climbed into, yet found it stuck shut, effectively trapping her inside. The machine let out a noise so loud that Mick had to cover her ears and, within a blink of an eye, the machine made a loud bang and both it and Mick were gone.
When Mick opened her eyes, she found herself on a moonlight, sandy beach, high enough up on the shore that high tide most likely wouldn’t reach her or the machine she was still stuck inside. After quite a bit of pushing with her shoulders, Mick got the door to the machine open, the force of the door popping open threw Mick out onto the sand. Mick gave a huff, lightly kicking the bottom of the machine before using a nearby staircase to climb onto the top of the machine. She popped open the top where the wires and motor resided, checking on a few wires and reconnecting a few of them that had gotten knocked out of place somehow. As she looked around to see if anyone had seen her, Mick saw a couple of people with a long surfboard running toward a group of people that looked vaguely familliar.
“Oh, no way,” Mick whispered to herself incredulously. The people on the beach were the bikers and surfers from Wet Side Story, the movie world she had just left from. If her eyesight was any good, which it was, the people with the longboard had to be her parents just... younger.
Mick pulled her cell phone out of her shorts pocket and, sure enough, the date on the middle of the screen was September 23, 2017. She hadn’t even been born yet! It was three years before Mick would even be born.
Quietly, as to not cause any of them to look her way, Mick slid off the top of the machine, rolling underneath the staircase so none of them would see her. She wanted to see what was going to happen. After a minute of the group talking amongst themselves, Mick watched in horror as her friends, Struts, Giggles and Lugnut, began to sparkle. She had heard from her mom, Mack, that they only began to sparkle if the movie world was collapsing due to Lela and Tanner not being there. After a few seconds, the three of them were gone. Not long after, her best friend Miles and two of the surfers, Seacat and Rascal, began to sparkle as well.
Mick forced herself to look away as tears stung at her eyes. She didn’t want to watch Miles and her friends disappear; it would be like watching them die and that was far too much for her to bear. A moment went by and Mick heard CheeChee, one of Lela’s closest friends, let out her signature giggle before a loud *PING* was heard. While it sounded like a cartoony microwave telling someone that their TV dinner was ready, it gave Mick a sense of dread as she realized that the only ones left out of the group were Lela and Tanner and Mick’s parents, Mack and Brady.
The hidden brunette took a few deep breaths to calm herself before looking back to where the four remaining people stood. A few minutes of conversation went by before Brady helped Tanner set the longboard down on the sand and handed him something from his pocket. Mick stood up under the stairs, hoping that it would give her a better vantage point. Lela knelt down and started to help Tanner out with whatever it was Brady had tasked them with. Before Mick knew it, she watched as her parents ran off in the direction of Brady’s family’s old house. Mick inched her way out from behind the stairs, taking a good look around before deciding to run over to Lela and Tanner.
“Guys,” she called as she reached them. “Lela, Tanner, what’s going on? Where are we?”
Lela and Tanner looked up at Mick with confusion written on their faces. Lela scanned Mick’s face before giving her a small smile. “Do we know you?”
Mick gave them a pained look before righting herself. This Lela and Tanner didn’t know her yet. Nobody from their world knew her yet. Heck, her own parents didn’t know her yet. Mick took a deep breath, “Look, I have very little time, so I’m going to make it count, if that’s okay?”
Lela turned to Tanner and the pair shared a look before turning back to Mick and nodding. “Go ahead,” Tanner said, gesturing to a spot on the sand next to Lela.
Mick knelt down on the sand with them, helping them to pry the “Friendship Forever” flower from the top of the surfboard that Mick had loved since she was a little girl. “I’m from the future. I know you guys are from the sixties and you think this is the future, but I’m from this world’s future.”
After the flower emblem came off the board, the trio placed it to the side and Lela and Tanner focused solely on the girl in front of them. “So you’re from, like, tomorrow’s tomorrow?” Tanner asked.
Mick weighed out the question before giving a single nod. “Give or take a few years, but that’s fine too. Anyway, I’m here to make sure things go right, okay? Those friends of yours, Mack and Brady? They’re my parents.”
“Seriously?!” Lela gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. “I knew there was something familiar about you!” Lela gave Mick a tight hug before releasing her.
Tanner gave her a hug as well, adding in a little wiggle side-to-side. “You look like Mack, but you act a lot like Brady. That is so cool!”
Mick gave a small laugh in return, sitting back on her feet so she could see them both. “I hate to ask this of you both, but I need you to try doing something for me.”
“Anything,” Lela replied, taking Mick’s hand in hers with a bright smile. Tanner nodded in agreement, draping an arm over Lela’s shoulders.
“Whatever happens,” Mick started softly, “don’t change much when you get back to your world. I know you want to, but if I’m going to live at all, I need that world of yours to stay as close to the original story as possible. I’m all for changing it and making it yours, but, please, consider it. I don’t want to lose you all as my friends.”
Tanner watched Lela in anticipation, watching as her eyes filled with so many different emotions, he thought her head might explode. Lela swallowed thickly, her eyes glazed over with unshed tears as she met Mick’s eyes once more. “The whole reason I left our world was to find out who I could really be.”
“I’m not asking you to change who you are, Lela,” Mick said, squeezing Lela’s hand tightly. “I know that I can’t stop you from choosing differently once you’ve made up your mind. I’ve known that since before Butchy and I got together and that was a while ago. I’m not going to try to-”
“You and Butchy are together?!” Tanner and Lela hollered in unison.
Mick sighed, having not noticed her slip of the tongue before they asked about it. ”Well, I’ve said too much. Anyway, please think about it. I have to go before I get caught, okay? I will always remember you guys, even if you don’t remember me.”
Mick quickly leaned over and gave the stunned couple one last hug before getting up and bushing sand from her legs. With one last glance at her friends, Mick pushed herself into a run, making her way over to the machine as Mack and Brady returned to Lela and Tanner’s spot by the water. Mick hid under the stairs again, watching as the group quickly stuck the flower emblem to another surfboard and rushed off into the water.
The brunette decided she didn’t want to stick around any longer to find out what outcome her friends and family had made with their choices. Mick took a deep breath, climbing into the machine she had arrived in and taking a last look at her parents as they stood together on the beach, watching Tanner and Lela ride off into the ocean on a hydroelectric surfboard. With a smile at her parents, Mick closed the door of the machine and sat on the floor of it, watching the waves outside the machine and listening to the machine as it whirred to life. She wished it would either take her to the movie Lela and Tanner had, hopefully, returned to or to the shed in her parents’ backyard.
What she didn’t see, however, was her dad, Brady, watching the machine over Mack’s shoulder as he hugged her. Brady watched in astonishment as the yellow, tube-like machine began to sparkle, much like Tanner and Lela’s friends had. Brady squinted at the bright object, giving Mack a tight squeze as he did. He found himself studying the machine as the flower emblem, one that looked a lot like the one they had just glued to Tanner and Lela’s surfboard, pushed out from the top of the machine and spun, spinning faster and faster as the machine began to whir loudly.
Brady was able to catch a glimpse of the inside of the tube as it began to disappear from the top down, spotting a young girl that looked a lot like Mack, but was wearing the same necklace Brady himself wore. A necklace that Mack had made for him for their anniversary. He never took it off, how would another person, especially that girl, have it? Who could she possibly have been? How would she be so important to him if he decided to give her his favorite necklace? Brady didn’t have much of a chance to think on those thoughts as the machine disappeared, taking the girl and all of his questions with it.
With a curious yet happy smile, Brady released Mack from his tight embrace, giving her a small kiss. They picked up the old destiny board from the sand, feeling stunned as a glowing flower had appeared in the same spot the previous one had vacated. The couple shared a small laugh and another hug as they brushed it off and decided it had to be because of the movie magic Tanner and Lela had brought to their world with them. Hand in hand, the couple began their walk down the beach, hoping to return to the school in time to help clean up after the dance had ended.
Maybe, someday down the road, they would find a way to return to Wet Side Story.

It Was Always Enough
Monthly Prompts Day 6
August 6th - Old Photo
AU Used: None
Characters: Brady and Mack (Teen Beach) and Makana “Mick” Birch (OC)
Once again, even though some of the lyrics are mixed around in order, they are still shown like this.
This should’ve been called My Obsession With Hamilton, Example #1776
While cleaning out her closet and packing things into boxes, Mick found herself sitting on her bedroom floor, looking through photo albums. She was supposed to be getting things packed before she had to leave for college, yet once she found the albums, she stopped to look through her family’s history. Her parents, Mack and Brady, checked in on her occasionally, bringing her food or drinks when they believed she may need it. This time, however, they decided to sit with their only child and look through pictures. Mack and Brady scanned through pictures of them on their wedding day while Mick flipped through an album that had her name on the front.
“Hey, guys,” Mick started, holding out the photo album, “what’s this picture from?”
Mack took the older album from her daughter and held it so her husband could see. “Oh,” Mack sighed with a smile, “I remember that day. That was the day I told your father I was pregnant with you.”
Mick took another look at the picture before giving her mom a look. “Why does he look scared?”
“I was very scared, Mickie,” Brady stated. “I had no idea your mom was pregnant and we’d just gotten through a rough patch when she told me that. My world was shaken in the best way possible.”
Mick smiled at her parents before moving to stand up. She stretched a little before moving to her doorway. “I’m going to grab more snacks. I’ll be right back.”
Mack turned to face Brady, a look of pure love in her eyes. “Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now.”
/Flashback\
“Look around, look around…” A twenty-one year old Mack sat on her grandfather’s front porch with her fiancé, Brady. She took his hand in hers and placed it over where their unborn child was.
Brady glanced down to where his hand rested, a look of confusion taking over his features before a glimmer of disbelief mixed with hope shone in his eyes. “How long have you known?”
Mack shrugged lightly, a small smile on her face. “A week or so.”
“Mack, you should have told me,” Brady insisted gently, turning to face her more.
“I tried to tell you about a week ago,” Mack sighed. A week ago, Brady had been let go from his job when they decided to do a round of lay-offs.
“You should have told me,” Brady claimed softly.
Mack shook her head. “I'm not sorry.”
“I would’ve loved to know,” Brady said, moving his hands up to capture Mack’s face in them. “Now I have no job to provide for our family with. How are you so calm about this?”
“I'm not afraid,” Mack stated firmly, making sure Brady could hear the sincerity in her voice. “If this child shares a fraction of your smile or a fragment of your mind, look out world! That would be enough. So long as you come home at the end of the day, that would be enough.”
Now that Mack had Brady’s full attention, she intended on making sure he knew how much she cared about him and their relationship. “We don't need a legacy. We don't need money. If I could grant you peace of mind, if you could let me inside your heart… Oh, let me be a part of the narrative in the story they will write someday. Let this moment be the first chapter; where you decide to stay and I could be enough.”
“You are enough,” Brady assured her, pushing himself closer to her.
“We could be enough,” Mack restated, placing Brady’s hand back on her stomach with a smile.
Brady nodded in agreement, his eyes beginning to burn with tears. “That would be enough.”
