Melody [Viktor x Reader]
So for those who don’t know, I am kind of into the Love Live fandom and like school idols. The songs are so catchy and I love the dancing! So heres my obligatory idol AU.
Synopsis: An enchanting song brings Viktor and Jayce to discover a budding idol group in Piltover. Viktor may just be taken by one of the singers sweet singing.
Warnings: None!
The song in this fic is this one. All lyrics belong to 9 Mermaids. The reader sings for Ruby (the one with the red hair and pigtails)
The leaves rustled lightly through the late summer breeze of Piltover Academy. School had returned to session not more than a week ago, but all of the students were already studying hard. The common areas of the academy campus were overrun with students of all majors exchanging information and working on projects. Not long ago Viktor was one of those students.
He and his partner Jayce recently founded their own company, Hextech, and were currently working on a new device that could use magic to transport objects. After a particularly bad failed attempt Jayce had called for a break. Viktor preferred to keep working on the issues with their project, but Jayce insisted.
The two went out for coffee at a nearby shop and after spending about 10 minutes sitting in the shop they decided to go back to work. Why? Well, Viktor wouldn’t stop talking about what went wrong and how they could fix it.
“I’m not going to get that brain of yours to take a break am I?” Jayce had said.
“No I don’t think you will.” Viktor had rebutted.
And so they were now on their way back to the lab. However, Jayce had convinced Viktor to at least take the scenic route.
A gentle melody could be heard as the two men strolled down the empty path. It was strange that anybody would even be back towards this part of campus, usually it was deserted. As the two men rounded the corner they caught sight of a young woman in the grass beside the path.
It looked as though she was practicing some sort of performance. Her H/C hair was tied up and flowing in the breeze with every movement she made. The music on her small record player slowed, as did her dancing. After a few measures of music she started to sing “But when I recall how we said our goodbyes…” she waited again for several measures.
Jayce and Viktor quietly walked closer, but not enough to disturb her. Her voice was sweet and smooth as she sang. “Though it hurts me!” Her hand raised to the sky and she looked at it. With each passing beat it moved before she finally brought it back down in front of her. “Far away, you’re far away, and I miss you everyday! So I’ll drink your favorite tea, and hope you’re missing me.”
Jayce was enjoying the performance, but surprisingly it had Viktor entranced. He didn’t usually listen to music like that, it had such a catchy and youthful sound. And this girl, it was as though she embodied everything about that song. Her youthful and admittedly cute face caught his eye. Her sweetness filled his heart with a feeling he couldn’t explain. It almost felt unnatural to him. He who always put his work first, who’s mind was always thinking, the gears in his brain always turning. But now those gears had stopped completely with her enchanting melody.
The music slowed and she ended her song with the final words “Thank you very much!” And in the silence Viktor was left staring.
“Damn I messed up that breakdown again!” She mumbled to herself and ran her hands down her face in frustration. “Ok! Maybe if I run it again I’ll get it this time.”
Before she even had the chance to restart her backtrack she was caught off guard by the sound of clapping. Her head whipped to the left to see two men standing on the path clapping for her performance.
“That was amazing! Are you doing some sort of show?” Jayce asked.
His question was met with the mysterious girl letting out an adorable squeak as her face contorted with terror. She quickly scooped up her bag that had been discarded nearby and ran as fast as she could.
“Wait!” Jayce shouted after her. “You forgot your-“ he picked up the small record player. “This is the smallest music device I’ve ever seen.” He commented.

‘How long were they standing there? Did they see everything? This is so embarrassing!’ Your thoughts wouldn’t stop racing. Your heart thumped loudly in your chest as you ran back to your dorm room. You were in your last year at the Piltover Academy in their English program. This year you and your two friends, Mina and Anya, had decided to do something different. You decided to form an idol group together.
The idea came from seeing the popular idol Seraphine perform after last year’s graduation ceremony. So the three of you worked all summer to write songs for a concert to welcome the scholars of Piltover back the the academy, which you got permission to do of course. It seemed like a good idea at the time, and you loved performing, but being caught practicing by yourself was particularly embarrassing.
You slammed the door to your room closed behind you. You sighed as you walked over to your bed, placed your bag beside you, and sat down. “I knew I should have just practiced in here, but it was so nice out today.” You grumbled and ran your hand through your hair. You took a moment to calm your emotions before turning to your bag. “I still have work to do on my dancing so I might as well get back to it.” You dug in your bag for a bit, but each passing second filled you with more and more dread as your digging became more frantic. “Oh no. Where is it? Where is it?!”
*********
Jayce held the tiny musical contraption in his hand. He looked at it as he leaned back in the chair at his desk. “How are we going to get this back to her?”
“Clearly she’s a performer. The music department is probably your best bet in finding her.” Viktor commented before attempting to get back to his work. His brain was still riddled with thoughts of that song and that sweet voice of hers. He crumpled the paper full of equations he had been working on before tossing it aside.
“We should probably look for her together. Two heads are better than one.” Jayce suggested.
Viktor groaned at his lack of focus. “Clearly I’m not getting any work done anyway. So why not.”
“Oh? Something bothering you?” Jayce cocked an eyebrow at how easily Viktor gave in.
“I’m having trouble focusing. Some fresh air might clear my head.” Viktor grabbed his cane and walked beside his partner.
Jayce laughed before standing up himself. “We just got some fresh air.” Viktor rolled his eyes at Jayces comment. “You sure you’re not distracted by a certain mysterious songstress?”
“Perhaps the song was a little catchy.” Viktor admitted.
Jayce patted his partner on the back as he passed him to get to the door. “It was catchy.” Once the two men exited to make their way to the music department Jayce made another comment. “It sounded like something Caitlyn would listen to. She does like that other singer, Seraphine. Oh and that K/DA group, though their music isn’t as… bubblegum pop.”
“I don’t believe I’ve every heard of either group before.”
“Don’t worry I probably wouldn’t know them either if it wasn’t for Caitlyn.” Jayce laughed.
*********
You made your way back to where you were practicing, but much to your dismay the music player wasn’t there. “Ugh I bet those two guys took it.” You sighed. “We had it specially made too. Mina is going to kill me for losing it!”
You made the decision to go and tell your partners what happened. Hopefully with the three of you looking you’d be able to find the guys who most likely had it. Though you had run away so fast that you didn’t really get a good look at them. Who knew if you’d even be able to recognize them? Still, you’d have to confess your mistake to your friends first.
You ran to the music wing and entered the doors into the practice room where Mina and Anya were working on their singing. “Hey guys…” the tone in your voice was very suspicious.
“What happened?” Mina asked, her dark brown eyes scanning your figure.
“So I was practicing the dance outside earlier…” you looked at your feet and shifted in place.
“And?” Mina waved a hand, prompting you to continue.
“And I was kind of seen by these two guys-“
“Did they like it?! Did they have any critiques about the song?” Anya butted in enthusiastically. Mina shot her a judgmental look that pretty much told her to shut up.
“So here’s the thing. They kind of caught me off guard and I sort of ran away.” Mina scowled, not quite sure where this was going. You said your next words very quietly. “And I sort of left the music player and when I went back it was gone.”
“You what?!” Mina shouted.
“I know! I’m sorry!” You cried back.
“Y/N! We had that made specifically for us to do remote practicing! It was one of a kind!” Mina argued.
“It’s not like I meant to lose it! Maybe the two guys picked it up?”
“And how do you suppose we find them huh? You don’t know anything about them and it’s not like we have spare time to look for them!” Mina continued to shout.
*********
“The director of music studies said that music students might be practicing somewhere in this wing…” Jayce commented as he and Viktor entered into a long hallway.
“We can only hope she actually is here.” Viktor replied, his voice a little more eager than he had expected it to be.
Suddenly the two heard shouting from a nearby practice room. It was rather sneaky of them, but they looked through the door window.
“Well this is a lucky break.” Jayce commented.
Viktor hummed in response as his eyes widened, seeing her through the window. The cute face he remembered from the performance earlier was now fraught with worry as she argued with two other girls.
Jayce knocked on the door. Viktor whipped his head away from the window and towards his partner having not been expecting the sound.
“I’m sorry but we’re kind of in the middle of something right now. Whatever this is, can it wait?” A red haired girl with an unpleasant look on her sharp face said when she opened the door.
“We just need a moment to speak with your friend there.” Jayce pointed towards the girl with the H/C hair, whom he and Viktor were looking for.
The red haired girl narrowed her eyes as she scanned the two men in front of her. After a rather awkward minute she replied. “Fine. But don’t make it too long.” She turned back towards the music room. “Y/N! Some guys are here to talk to you.” As Y/N passed her red haired companion, Mina, she was scolded. “These better be the guys that have our music player or else you’re going to get it later.”
Y/N exited into the hallway to meet with the two men.
*********
“Ah hi. I’m Jayce and this is Viktor.” One of the men introduced themselves. You had to admit that he was a bit intimidating with how much larger he was than you. Thankfully he had a kind face that put your nerves at ease.
“I’m Y/N.” You replied. “What can I do for you?”
“We were wondering if this belonged to you?” Jayce held out a small music player… your music player.
You gawked at it. “Yes! Yes it does!” You eagerly took it from his hands. “I left it behind after my practice earlier. Thank you for bringing it back!”
“Not a problem at all!” Jayce replied with a dazzling smile. “Though I do have to wonder, where did you get such a small music device?”
“We, that is the idol group I’m a part of, commissioned an engineering student to make it for us.” You explained.
“An idol group? What is that exactly?” Viktor finally spoke up. His accent was intoxicating to your ears, it took you a moment to reply.
“It’s like a music group. W-we sing and dance, but it’s more than just about the music. Each of us has different feelings that we’d like our audience to feel while we perform.” You explained with a dreamy look in your eyes. “Anya wants to excite the crowd and leave them in high spirits. Mina wants to wow the audience, to give them a show they won’t forget. And me… I just want the audience to have fun and to feel the love that I have for performing.”
“The three of you seem very passionate.” Viktor smiled at you and leaned onto his cane, drawing his attention towards you.
“We are. We worked all summer on the performance we will be putting on this weekend. And now that we have this back we can really buckle down on practicing!” you held up the tiny music device for emphasis.
“Well I can’t wait to see it. How about you Viktor?” Jayce patted his partner on the back.
“I am not usually a fan of big crowds, but you do make it sound fun.” Viktor placed a hand on his chin in thought. “And after that preview we got earlier, I don’t think I’d want to miss out on the full performance.”
You blushed at his compliment. “Oh, well… thank you in advance for coming”
“Of course! We will see you this weekend!.” Jayce gave a hard pat on Viktors back as a sign to leave.
“Break a leg this weekend miss Y/N.” Viktor gave a smile and a small wave. With that, he and Jayce left.
You waited a moment before slowly reentering the practice room, a small smile plastered on your face. Your friends were right by the door, no doubt watching from the window and trying to listen in.
“So they had it?”
“Ooo you’re smiling! What happened?” Mina and Anya statements conflicted each other in tone.
You held up your hand with the music player. “They kindly returned it. And they promised to come see our show this weekend.” You calmly said. Mina grabbed the music device from you and walked towards the piano in the corner of the room, leaving you near the door with Anya.
“And?” Anya took a step closer and raised her eyebrows, a childish grin crossing her lips.
“And?” Your brows furrowed in confusion.
“And you are blushing. What else happened?” Anya stepped even closer and spoke quieter. She was now in your personal bubble and it made you a bit uncomfortable.
“Nothing else happened.” You pushed away from her and began walking towards the piano. “One of them complimented my practice that’s all.”
Anya gasped very loudly and began to squeal. “That’s exciting! Which one said it? The big handsome one? No, he’s not your type. No way he’d get you blushing just from a compliment. So it must have been the other guy right? Do you like him?” Anya simply wouldn’t shut up and clearly it was getting on Minas nerves, given the furrowing of her brows.
“Alright let’s quit it with the gossip and start practicing. We’ve got a lot to do before this weekend.”
**********
“Good work. I think we’re ready for tomorrow night!” Mina clapped her hands together after the final run of your set.
“Yay! I am so excited!” Anya grabbed your hands and jumped with joy.
“Let’s not overwork ourselves though. Get a good nights sleep tonight ladies. Tomorrow we show this academy what we’ve got!” With Minas final words the three of you parted ways for the night.
On the way back to your dorm your growling stomach told you that a late night dinner was just what you needed. So, you made a plan in your head to go and get some takeout after a quick shower. Thankfully there was a small diner not too far off of campus that stayed open late.
You entered into the diner, refreshed from your shower. “Table for one?” The hostess asked.
“Just a takeout menu please” you responded. The young lady handed you the diners menu and you began to look it over.
“Welcome! Could I get you a table?” The hostess greeted another guest behind you as the bell above the door signaled their arrival.
“Ah, no thank you. I just need to order a coffee to go.” a familiar voice came from the man who was now standing beside you. You may have only met him once, but that accent was one you couldn’t forget. You lowered the menu and looked up at him. His eyes drifted down towards you before he turned to you. “Oh, hello. It was Y/N, right?”
You nodded at him. “Yeah. And you’re… Viktor, was it?”
“I am.” He gave a small smile that you happily returned. “So miss Y/N, what are you doing here so late?”
“I was going to get something to eat. Late night rehearsals tend to make one hungry.” You commented. Viktor hummed in reply. “I was going to get takeout, but maybe you’d like to join me?” You don’t know where you got the courage to ask him that, but with his answer you found that you were glad you did.
“I could use a break from the lab…” He murmured to himself before giving his actual answer, “Yes, I think I will join you.”
“Excuse me, miss!” You called out to the hostess who had been chatting with a waitress not too far from the podium near the door.
“Yes?” she responded and made her way back over to you.
“I could use that table after all. But make it a table for two.”
The two of you were seated by the window and menus were placed in front of you. Both of you thanked the waitress and got to chatting while looking over what to eat.
“So you know why I was out so late, but what about you?”
“Jayce and I have been hard at work developing a new form of technology. One that combines the Arcane with science and engineering. I have a habit of working very late into the night. This is one of the only places serving coffee this late.”
“Oh, that sounds very interesting. What sort of technology are you engineering?” You folded the menu down to look at him from across the table.
Viktor mimicked your motion before speaking to you again. “We are developing what we have decided to call a Hexgate. To put it simply, it utilizes runes and magic crystals to transport something between different places. We haven’t gotten it right just yet, but I believe we are close to a breakthrough! Once we get the Hexgates working, who knows what else we can create. I can only hope that we will be able to make a better world for Piltover and the Undercity alike.” Viktors eyes lit up when he talked about his work. His passion made your heart sing with joy. It very much reminded you of the inspiration you felt from Seraphines performance at the end of last semester.
“Are you two ready to order?” Your waitress cut in.
“Oh yes!” You replied. “I’ll have a water and a burger please. Medium rare… with a side of fries”
She jotted down your order before turning to Viktor. “And you sir?”
“Ah, just a coffee please. And a small slice of your apple pie.”
You both folded up your menus and handed them to the waitress. “I’ll get the order in for you.” She said before walking away.
“Not that hungry huh?” you commented.
“I did only come here for the coffee… but a small snack couldn’t hurt.” Viktor placed his elbows on the table and leaned onto his hands, an inquisitive look crossing his face. “So, what more can you tell me about this idol group of yours?”
“Well… The three of us formed it after seeing Seraphines concert last semester. Anya composes the music for us, since she’s majoring in music. Mina is majoring in theater so she choreographs our dances. And I write the lyrics. Oh, I’m an english major by the way.”
Viktor nodded in understanding. “You wrote that song you were singing the other day?”
“Yeah. I’ve always loved the idea of love and I wanted to write a song about it. I’m sure it’d feel more genuine if I actually had any experience with love, but the others like it so I guess it’s good enough.” You sighed and glanced out of the window into the streets of Piltover. “I wish I could connect with my own lyrics a bit more. Then I’m sure my performance would be even better.”
“Eh connection or not, I found your singing quite enchanting.”
You head whipped back towards Viktor at his compliment. “Y-you what?”
“I find the sound of your voice very sweet. In truth I could listen to you sing for hours.” Viktor looked at you with kind and compassionate eyes. It caught you off guard and left you gawking for a moment
“Viktor… Do you believe in love at first sight?” You averted your eyes as you asked.
Viktor leaned back in his seat and pondered the question. “As a scientist I am tempted to say no. Yet, something inside of me does believe in it.” He leaned forward once more and stared you down. “Why do you ask?”
“It’s just that, when we first met, I wasn’t just embarrassed to be caught practicing. I was worried that I may have made a fool out of myself in front of someone so… handsome.” You dared to sneak a glance up at Viktor, his cheeks held a dusting of blush on them. Taking it as a good sign you decided to continue. “And outside the music room… I found myself taken with you. If you think my voice is sweet then you have no idea just how intoxicating yours sounds.”
“You were taken with me?” Viktor was thoroughly surprised by what you were saying. He never even imagined that someone would be interested in him.
You nodded your head. “Yes. And your dedication and passion that you’ve described for your work, I must admit it’s only making me fall harder for you.”
Viktors face turned completely red. “I-“
“Order up!” The waitress returned with your food at the most inopportune time. She placed the plates down in front of the both of you and you could do nothing but awkwardly stare at them. “You two enjoy!”
You cleared your throat. “So, you- um- you were about to say something?”
“Right. Miss Y/N, if it is not too much trouble… I would very much like to take you out on a proper date. Perhaps after your concert tomorrow?”
“Yes!” You answered far too quickly. Viktor gave a small chuckle at your reaction. Clearing your throat you attempted to answer again with a little more self restraint. “I’d love to go on a date with you tomorrow night.”
A smile spread widely across Viktors face. “Wonderful! Do you have a favorite restaurant? Or somewhere you’d prefer to go?”
“I dont. So go ahead and surprise me!” You gave your answer with a glowing smile that made Viktors heart melt.
**********
Viktor and Jayce sat in the front row of the packed auditorium. The concert was free to attend, but Y/N had made sure to reserve special seats for them. Viktor couldn’t stop the excited butterflies in his stomach. He’d never been to a concert but he was itching to see how Y/N shined on stage.
Finally the lights dimmed and the audience fell silent. The stage lit up illuminating the idol group that stood center stage. Their frilled costumes sparkled under the stage lights.
“Good Evening Piltover! Are you ready for the show?” Mina shouted from center stage. The crowd roared in response.
Y/N stepped towards the center and made the next announcement “We are Spellbound, and we hope you enjoy our music!”
Finally Anya moved closer to the center. “Let’s kick off this school year with a bang!” She shouted before an upbeat tempo began to play.
It was different from the one song that Viktor had heard before. For some reason it didn’t occur to him that he would hear more than one song tonight. It did make sense though, a concert wouldn’t be just one song long after all.
He looked on at Y/N as she sang your heart out, a delighted smile was plastered on his face. She looked like you were having so much fun it was practically contagious.
The concert was beginning to draw to a close with the announcement of the final song. That’s when the familiar tune began to play. It was the song Viktor was most eager to hear. As soon as Y/N began to sing he could tell there was something different from when she practicing. There was more passion behind the notes, and a sincerity behind her lyrics that wasn’t there before. And Viktor knew in his heart that this newfound sound was thanks to him

“I will end this note I said with a message just for you!
I have one thing left to say, I’m grateful everyday!
Because there’s a chance, a little chance, someday we will meet again, so until then… I’ll be waiting patiently!
Sending cards, filled with all our memories!”
Your eyes caught Viktors as you sang and danced and it filled you with more joy than you could’ve ever imagined. It sparked up your performance with emotion that you’d never conveyed on stage before.
As your concert drew to a close your group thanked everyone for coming. The thunderous applause that you received left all three of you with so much joy and pride for your work. The curtains of the stage closed and you all retreated backstage to congratulate one another.
The three of you exchanged a laugh, the high of your success still lingering around you. “That was amazing! I can’t believe how good we did!” Anya shouted.
“The crowd sure enjoyed it. I only hope we can do it again soon!” Mina said. Your laughter began to die down, but your smiles never ceased.
“It sure was exhilarating, but I feel like I’m ready to sleep for a week.” You joked.
“Well I hope you can keep yourself awake for a few more hours at least.” You whipped your head around to see where the new voice was coming from. Viktor had made it backstage with a bouquet of flowers in his hand.
“Viktor!” you ran to him.“I think I can manage a few more hours. Otherwise I’d be a pretty bad excuse for a date.”
“I hardly think that is possible.” He held the flowers out to you “These are for you. Your performance tonight was breathtaking. I enjoyed every minute of it.”
You returned his gesture with a glowing smile and a harsh blush on your cheeks. “Thank you, thats so kind!” In a stroke of bravery you relevéd onto your toes and placed a quick kiss on Viktors cheek. It left him blushing and for a moment, stunned. “Let me change and we can head out. Wait here.” You quickly headed off to the dressing room, carefully avoiding your friends gazes. You knew that Anya would be overly excited for you and blow the whole thing out of proportion, and Mina would poke fun at your feelings. For this reason you were also very hasty in your quick change, not wanting to leave them alone with Viktor for too long.
You arrived back to Viktor as quickly as you could, but your friends were already bombarding him with questions. Thankfully he seemed to be handling them quite well. “Alright, I’m ready!” You announced.
Viktor broke away from your friends, giving them a courteous smile, and walked over to you. He extended a free arm for you to take. “Shall we then?”
You linked your arm with his and he led you out of the theater. “So where are you taking me tonight?”
