I smiled so happy to almost be finished with my work, sweeping my little twig broom across my wooden porch, all the while humming a sweet song to myself making sure to hold my dress a little so I wouldn't accidentally sweep it. When suddenly a smell found its way to my nose a scent I unfortunately knew. The horrific stench of hot sweat long allowed to wallow against skin, of unwashed skin, murky sour smelling mud and rotten clothing all of which had been sitting allowed to fester in the boiling new Mexico sun for god only knows how long. 

I couldn't help myself physically retching from the scent as I looked up seeing whitey Winn having arrived from his shift in the sheriff's office

"Mornin' Darlin"

"You know the rule whitey." I demanded using my broom to push his shoulder gently "six feet before whatever you got starts getting communicable"

"It ain't that bad!"

"When did you last bathe?"

For a moment he was puzzled leaning his hands on his gun belts "uuhhh few days ago?" He says not completely confident in his answer

"Why is that something you don't remember?"

"Busy" he shrugs

"You off from the office then?"

"Bills back, so he gave me a couple days off"

"Lovely, if you have a spare moment perhaps you could get started on the advanced Orwellian civilization growing in the old bowls and unwashed sheets inside that house of yours"

"it ain't that bad y/n"

"Really? cause I'm pretty sure I saw them britches of yours crawling out the front door trying to make a go of it themselves the other day" 

"Well maybe I need a hand from an expert" he smirked

"Oh because its a biohazard."

"No. maybe I just don't know where to start and need help of a good clean lady" He smiled 

"Maybe?"

"Maybe"

"On one condition"

"Agreed" He smirked 

"You don't know the condition?"

"I know ya. I know what it is. See you in a bit Darlin" he smiled blowing me a kiss and heading off towards his house.

I sighed and finished up cleaning up my house gathering up enough cleaning supplies to clean the whole mine. Gathering it all up as well as a cloth mask and some heavy duty gloves heading out my little house, and I saw Maggie on her porch 

"Hey y/n? ... there an outbreak of small pox?"

"No, Whitey is allowing me to clean"

"Ohh. Thank god. but you might be better just burn it down." 

"Well I'm gonna try" I nodded 

"Good luck" she says 

I headed towards the house immediately noticing the smell, the layer of dust and grime across every surface, the clothes and trash littered the floor, bowls and dishes across every surface and most of them where growing mould and such horrors. I think it would be easier to burn the place down. Whitey sat on his bed kicking off his boots and pulling off his sweaty dirty socks, he leant back on his arms and smiled at me "Hi darlin'" he cooes 

I physically wrenched and set my supplies down I grabbed a bucket filling it to the brim with water and taking it over setting it on the floor in front of him 

"what?" he chuckled but I carefully grabbed his jeans moving his legs so his feet in the bucket "Really?"

"Wash." I demanded 

"Fine" he sighed 

So I got to work running a wash tub and a whole sink full throwing dishes and clothes away using my strongest soap and strongest cleaners

"What the hell is this!" I complained grabbing a bowl from the floor seeing the utter forest of mould  

"Uhh it was rabbit stew"

"Stew? Whitey! this is enough of a civilization the fucking maggots are paying taxes!" I complained "This is getting thrown away. Immediately."

"It was Maggie's Bowl."

"She will understand" I explained throwing it away and getting back to my work "aahh! whitey!"

"Yeah?"

"what is this!" I complained as I picked up the crusty fabric 

"ahh... that's my rag"

"For what?"

"Dishes? Windows? Me? Shoes? anything really."

"You are disgusting" I sighed throwing it away 

"Well I don't have a pretty lady to look after my house" he shrugs "Bein' a single boy, and a busy deputy my house don't get cleaned a lot"

"so? you can clean"

"It' help ya get use to it. Then it'll be easy for ya to adjust after we get married"

"Ohh whitey if you think marriage is even on the table you are gonna have to learn how to sweep, and mop, and do dishes"

"But you look so pretty when you're workin', I wanna give ya lots of work to do"

"Whitey?"

"Fine. When I do some cleanin' we can get married?"

"I will clean this house completely today, and if you keep it clean to a decent cleanliness for two months then yes we can get married" 

"How clean is decent?" 

"I should be able to pop by unannounced and see the floor."

"all the floor?"

"Yes all the floor Whitey" I laughed "it should be clean enough that if I came to the office and said whitey lets have dinner together, you shouldn't shit yourself. and the house should need maybe a table clean a made bed and a few dishes done." I told him getting started on the piles of laundry 

"Ya drive a hard bargin" he says coming over I thought to assist but he meerly sat behind me and wrapped his arms around me "I really have to do all that?"

"Do you want to get married or not?" I laughed giving him a shove away "Six feet Mr Winn"

"I do wanna get married ya know I do. But... that's a lot of work"

"I'm already cleaning it for you all you have to do is keep it clean"

"for two months"

"Whitey. I don't ask for much" 

"I know ya don't" he says giving my cheek a kiss "Will you help me?"

"You get three life lines. over the two months"

"Thank you darlin'" he cooes 

"Come on, you're doing your own cow boy panties" I told him

"Alright" He sighed moving to sit beside me to clean his clothes too even if I had to help him a little with how to use the washboard, or how much soap he needs I finished up my stuff leaving the rest for him and heading to the dishes 

"Dear god, its alive" I complained making sure my gloves where far up my sleeves as I cleaned each and every dish 

"Clothes are done" he says coming and cuddling me 

"Good, you hung them up?" I asked pushing him away a little putting space between us

"Ohh no."

"Dry and put the pots away and I'll hang the clothes up" I told him as I finished the last dish 

"Alright" he sighed so I headed out with all the clothes most of which I had never seen given they where do dirty whitey hadn't worn them in months, and had been living in his one outfit for as long as I could remember I hung them all up on the line outside leaving them in the hot new Mexico sun 

"awww crisp white shirts" I smiled as I hung it up before I headed back inside refilling the wash tub with fresh clean water "whitey?"

"Yes darlin'"

"The house is nice and clean"

"Yeah looks lovely" He says 

"Now we have one other place to clean" I smiled splashing the water on him 

"I'm fine" he shrugs

"Whitey. take a bath." I told him "while I wash the floors."

"Do I have to?" he sighed 

"You'll get kisses" I cooed fixing his facial hair a little 

"Real kisses?" he smirked

"Humm umm" I nod

"Fine. Will my lovely lady help me?"

"I am not giving you a bath whitey. Even when we're married. if your very good you'll get a back rub after"

"Alright" he sighed sorting himself out for his bath, I quickly took his clothes and washed them adding them to the line, I got another big bucket and scrubbed the floor by hand 

"You're floor is white?"

"It is? Ohh. I thought it was black." he says as he scrubbed

"No it's white wood under here."

"Ohh,"

"You had no idea did you?"

"I did not."

"We are living in my house when we get married."

"I thought we'd move into that nice empty house on  the hill, with the nursey?" he smirked leaning on the rim of the wash tub

"will you keep that clean?"

"...Maybe"

"Then I'll think about it" I laughed as I finished up and quickly changed his sheets 

"Don't bother, ya can change them after" he smirked 

"I'll change them again" I told him using my bucket to dump hot water over his head 

"Alright," he chuckled 

and as I returned I happily took off my gloves and my mask taking a deep inhale "Ummmm Lovely" I smiled 

"I have to admit. its nice." he says climbing out his tub and sitting on his bed with the towel, "Smells nice too."

"You look ever so handsome whitey" I smiled sitting with him and giving him lots of little kisses 

"Ummm I finally get some attention now?" he cooes nuzzling with me too 

"Now your all clean" I smiled nuzzling up to him so we could cuddle "My handsome clean cowboy" 

"You're gonna make me bathe alot once we're married aren't ya?"

"Everyday"

"Everyday? really? fine... so long as my little lady loves me"

"Of course I will" I smiled "I'll always love you whitey. I would just prefer you be clean."

"if that's what it takes to have a beautiful wife" he says giving me a soft kiss "Are any of my clothes clean to get dressed into?"

"All your clothes are on the line. it's fine you can sit in your towel till somethings dry it won't take long"

"I'm sure we can think of somethin' we could do while we wait" he smirked kissing my neck 

"Alright, besides you owe me for cleaning"

"I know, I'm more then happy to pay up" he smirked

Little Bird

This is my first entry for the Armitage Summer Splash event. I'm really excited to share it with you - it's my first attempt at writing this particular character. Hope you'll enjoy it!

Little Bird

“Did we make a mistake?” Little Bird’s whisper reaches him in the darkness. 

Guy feels the weight of her head resting on his chest. His fingers run through her tousled hair as he ponders the question. He does not know whether she refers to the day it all started – or yesterday. Perhaps she is thinking of those months when he chased her through the woods when he had thought her to be just another outlaw poaching in the king’s forest. Perhaps she even recalls that stormy night when he hid in one of the caves only to wake up to her blade pressed against his throat, but the only thing he could think of was the rich waves of her copper hair spilling down her shoulders. She must remember how her elegant beauty took his breath away. He recalls the astonishment he felt when he realised that she was the king’s niece, used to having the whole world at her command and taking what she wanted. And so this Little Bird of his commandeered the only thing Guy had never known he had. His heart, or rather – what was left of it. He still remembers how she smelled of rain and how her kisses tasted like peppermint that night. No, that was not a mistake. That night – and many others that followed whenever they could meet under the cover of the night – was like taking the first breath of air after staying under the water’s surface for too long. And that air was sweet and intoxicating, even more so due to their circumstances. 

They were too alike to stop these new, intense feelings that grew between them even though their dalliance was a dangerous game to play. Guy was ruthless, doing the Sheriff’s bidding without a blink of an eye, never wavering. Robinette was doing what she thought was right – without remorse. In the king’s forest, she hunted the game so that the local villagers would not starve – and sometimes the game turned out to be tax collectors or the Sheriff’s men. Yes, it complicated things between them, but it was not a mistake. He was certain.

She must be thinking about yesterday. To hell with yesterday. That muddy road, his stubborn horse, and the Sheriff complaining about the weather. The pitter-patter of the raindrops against the leaves. The whooshing sound of arrows piercing the air. It was an ambush and the forest outlaws were behind it. A fight ensued. Some of the soldiers escaped, but Guy stayed on even when an arrow hit his right shoulder. At that very moment, he heard a cry of anger and a hooded figure emerged from among the trees, a stray, copper lock of hair escaping from under the hood. His Little Bird. Lady Robinette of Brittany. Or rather, Robin Hood, as the peasants call their mysterious protector these days. It is a man’s world, after all. 

After that, the time seemed to speed up into a wild gallop. Guy will never forget the sound of Robinette’s sword clanking against the Sheriff’s blade. Warm blood trickled down from his own shoulder. A crossbow lay in the mud at the Sheriff’s feet. And then a sinking feeling grasped his throat when he noticed that a crossbow bolt was lodged in his flesh, not an outlaw arrow.

It was indeed fortunate for Guy that he knew how to fence using his left, uninjured arm. It was, however, not so fortunate for the Sheriff. The treacherous man fell into the mud with two gaping wounds in his body – one in his chest, the other one in his back. Guy exchanged a skewed smile with Robinette as they sheathed their swords. No words were needed.

And now Little Bird is in his arms again, soft and warm. Her hair smells like thyme and woodsmoke, and he takes a deep breath, filling his lungs with her scent. Her question echoes in his ears and a wave of certainty washes over him.

“If we did make a mistake,” he hears his own voice. “We have to make amends.”

“What do you have in mind?” Robinette lifts her head, searching his face. “Shall we give ourselves up to the law? Shall we flee?”

“Marry me, Little Bird. Marry me and I…” he never finishes the sentence. 

Her lips taste like peppermint again.

I actually think it’s weird how many people are praising this as if it’s like the ultimate sign of him having the perfect relationship?? Like no offence, truly, but how unstable does that marriage of his have to be if that man feels like he can’t even do his job properly lest he be “disrespecting” his partner by doing so? 😭

I really don't know, nonny, and I don't want to judge someone who I don't know and whose personal life I have no knowledge of, I'm not in his bedroom (for the record I don't want to be, but Blake Lively, if you're reading this...) but yeah it does feel very... I don't know it does raise questions for me.

Frankly I'd probably wonder more about the state of one's marriage if this wasn't merely the latest in a concerning movement from people to misunderstand and co-opt legitimate conversations about consent and respect (including in the acting/filming space - intimacy coordinators becoming the norm is fantastic, for example) in order to re-introduce censorship and sexual shame. While I personally liked the second season of Bridgerton better than the first, for example, I was concerned that quite a lot of people were saying it was better because the second couple weren't fucking all the time. The lack of sex being the defining reason for people and the pearl-clutching over the sex in the first season was a really concerning issue for me that I think got lost in all the (understandable) love for a good slowburn and Kate and Anthony's relationship arc.

Censoring sex, having shame around sex, thinking that movies are only ever rated 'R' because of sex/nudity, acting like sex cheapens a film or story or that a sex scene in a film is the same thing as porn, are all deeply, deeply concerning to me. This doesn't lead to better conversations about consent, respect, and healthy sexual relationships. It just leads to trying to control people's bodies and shame people who want sex, and in case nobody's made the connection by now, historically the bodies and actions they most try to control are those of women and queer people.

I'm an adult. I have had sex before, I will have sex again, sex is a part of my life and the lives of the people around me. Even if you are asexual or abstaining from sex for another reason, sex is still a part of our society and should be approached in a healthy and open manner. Just because I don't live in a house and won't ever live in a house doesn't mean that I shouldn't fight to tax billionaires and reclaim the middle class so my fellow citizens can buy a damn house if they want to, y'know?

Taking sex out of our stories doesn't make them better and it doesn't make us more aware of consent or how to have a healthy sexual relationship. It only shoves sex back into the closet, out of sight and out of mind, never to be spoken about so we remain ignorant and scared of it.

Also frankly if you think sex scenes are in any way sexy for the actor you haven't actually paid any attention to how sex scenes are filmed. Someone - I forget who - once described it as trying to act sexy with a camera shoved up your nose. It's 8am you got four hours of sleep and there's 20 people standing around you making you feel like a goldfish. There's a sock on your dick. It's way too cold in the room. Someone's giving you instructions while you and your costar struggle not to laugh because you both look/feel ridiculous and also your neck's at a weird angle so that your face is in the lighting. Hell, from everything I've seen and heard, filming murder scenes is more fun for most actors than filming sex scenes.

That's not to say "all actors are miserable filming sex scenes so we shouldn't do them." I think every actor would agree filming a sex scene is more fun than filming a scene in the rain and mud for ten hours with a 2am call and it's January. You're gonna be in physically uncomfortable situations to film things, that's just how it works, but you do it because it's what you love, and you believe in the story you're telling, and at the end of the day you are still finding ways to have fun.

Anyway this got very long and very serious but basically I want to say that I don't want to speculate on the state of a stranger's marriage, although it does make my eyebrows rise, partly out of principle but partly because I really don't think it says as much about the man's relationship as it does about a growing and deeply concerning trend in our society.

'When Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston were cast I was in shock': Sarah perry on The Essex Serpent

As an adaptation of her bestselling novel comes to screens, Sarah Perry describes the joys of being on set – and how the production restored her faith in storytelling

In March 2021, I was driven by a stranger down to the Essex coast, and there I found myself at the end of the 19th century, in a place that had never existed, full of people who’d never been born.

At any rate, that was the impression; in fact, I’d been deposited in a field on Mersea Island, which is cut off from the Essex mainland by a causeway inaccessible at high tide. Filming was under way for an adaptation of my novel The Essex Serpent, and since Mersea was one of the locations making do for Aldwinter, the imagined village where the novel is set, I’d been invited to take a look. The field had been colonised by a series of trucks and trailers, and everywhere I looked crew members were dashing about with clipboards and headsets, occasionally interspersed with actors in top hats, or in petticoats inches deep in Essex mud.

I know Mersea well, and had last visited with my goddaughter, so as I walked about there was the strangest sensation of double familiarity. On the one hand, there were the same old wooden cottages, and the same sea wall with shingle below it, and the cafe where we often bought ice-cream – but overlaying it all was Aldwinter, familiar to me only because I’d invented it. Down on the quay, a fire hose was doing the work of high tide, and seaweed had been scattered about; concrete bollards had been concealed by wooden crates, and fishing nets were hung over garden walls to dry. Everywhere there was an atmosphere of diligent hard work, as crew members adjusted baskets for eels, or children wandered past in shawls and clogs, but there was also the eerie atmosphere peculiar to that part of the Essex coast. It was Aldwinter to the letter, and astoundingly uncanny: it was as if the acts of writing and reading had been bypassed entirely, and the whole thing had leapt clean out of my skull.

As I arrived, filming had begun on a scene in which Aldwinter’s vicar Will Ransome (played – perfectly, in my disinterested opinion – by Tom Hiddleston) is briefly seen remonstrating with his sanctimonious verger outside the village school. The director Clio Barnard and the screenwriter Anna Symon welcomed me with characteristic kindness and I was given a headset, and shown the action on an iPad. Over and over, without once appearing to grow weary or impatient, the actors worked diligently at the brief scene until it was right, and the sight of this moved me almost to tears. That the story I’d written in a small, cold room in a Norwich terrace would one day be accorded such extraordinary care by so many people was remarkable, and I went to sit on the quay with a solitary cigarette, looking at the Thames barges moored nearby, trying to accommodate it all.

I suppose it would be usual for a writer to daydream about this sort of thing, but I never did: I’d allowed myself only the hope of kind reviews, and the means to pay the council tax on time. So the year of publication had constituted a series of wonderful shocks, one of which was finding myself in the offices of See-Saw Films, the production company that optioned the novel. Largely I remember an immense bearded lurcher taking up a sofa in the corner, and a sensation – quite rare to me – of deep shyness. I was treated by the prospective producers with great care. Was there anything in particular I felt should be done with the novel? There was, I said, screwing my courage to the sticking place: keep it gothic, and keep the women real. To the lasting confusion of a number of readers, the novel depicted women as they were in the 1890s – not fainting away in violet-scented swoons and never allowed beyond the withdrawing room without a chaperone, but vital, intelligent, lively and well-educated people, involved in politics, social justice and the sciences, and I felt if that was lost, the betrayal would be far worse than an injustice against fiction. They gave me their word, and I left the meeting assured the book was in the right hands, and promptly forgot all about it.

I forgot partly as an act of will. I’d been cautioned to expect agonising delays: there was casting to be seen to, of course, and all sorts of machinations regarding funding and distribution. Now and then I’d be given good news, and occasionally bad; but already I was coming to the end of my third novel, and was conscious of the dangers of dwelling on a moment of professional success, and never moving beyond it. I’d done my work, and handed it over: I didn’t feel it was any of my business. Besides, I’d seen Clio’s vision, and read Anna’s scripts, and it seemed to me then – and it certainly seems to me now – that in fact they’d amplify the novel as they altered it, so that the TV series and the book would be happy companions, neither cancelling the other out. Still: it was extremely difficult to maintain such a stern grip on myself when Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston were cast, and I’m afraid on one occasion I forgot myself so far as to lie face down on the carpet in a state of elated shock.

Often I’m asked if the lead actors resemble the characters as I’d imagined them. The truth is that I give less thought to the looks of my characters than to their interior lives: as I write, I’m not looking at them, I am inhabiting them. Claire Danes, who takes the lead role of Cora Seaborne and is a slight woman of extraordinary poise, doesn’t exactly resemble Cora, who is described as tall and broad-hipped and untidy. It doesn’t matter: the moment she came striding through Aldwinter on a sunny March morning, I saw only my Cora – a woman of warmth and vitality and intellect, hardly able to contain her lust for the world, and nothing like as wise as she thinks she is.

Now and then, the experience has proved melancholy. The novel was published six years ago, and sometimes I’ve melodramatically said that the woman who wrote it is dead. I was 35 when I wrote the final pages: much is changed and lost since then. The series, like the novel, is optimistic and even radical in its treatment of intimacy, affection and wonder, and I suspect I’ve grown a little harder and more cynical in the years that followed. Returning to the novel – on one occasion in corsets and teal-blue Victorian gown as an extra at the Natural History Museum – has been like passing my past self on the stairs, always with a pang of affection and loss.

But earlier this spring, as I was shown the series in a tiny Soho cinema, there was only pleasure and delight. All I could do was thank the director, and the writer, and everyone within earshot – because it isn’t pride I feel, it’s gratitude. There had been a time during the pandemic when I’d come to feel that the pursuit of literature was more or less worthless, and that I ought to have devoted myself to medicine, perhaps, or the law.
