god ever since i watched simm (and msp), seeing these two in bad buddy just completely takes me out every single time

Patreon has laid off their security team

I know this isn't an update on my interactive fiction game but I just wanted interactive fiction creators and other people who have Patreons to be aware about this issue.

Whitney Merrill on Twitter: "Whoa @Patreon laid off their ENTIRE security team. Wouldn’t trust my data there. Also there’s some amazing talent to scoop up." / Twitter

For creators with a Patreon, I would recommend using a password manager to generate a randomly generated password so that when Patreon has (another) security breach, your password will be unique.

For creators that are uncomfortable with using Patreon and do not want to lose their Patreon content, you can import your Patreon content to a WordPress website with a WordPress plugin that can be used with a WordPress membership plugin like Paid Memberships Pro that lets patrons subscribe to your content like on Patreon. However, please keep in mind that WordPress plugins are also very vulnerable to attack so it is very important that you update the plugins frequently if you choose to go this route.

Ko-fi is also a good alternative that I know a lot of interactive fiction creators use for their work. SubscribeStar is a good option for NSFW artists.

Hopefully there won't be any serious security breaches with Patreon but who knows what will happen...

UPDATE (10th September 2022 - 11:30AM BST):

Patreon has confirmed to reporters that they are hiring an external security team to handle Patreon's security.

Kevin Collier on Twitter: "Wild. Patreon confirms the layoffs in emailed statement to me, says it's ok, they're using third-party security. https://t.co/zV9zw9yOlh" / Twitter

What this means is that Patreon has decided to go for the cheaper option by outsourcing their security to a team abroad instead of spending more money and resources on an in-house security team. This is what is known to infosec/cyber security experts as MSSP/MSP.

However, a lot of cyber security professionals have criticised this decision by Patreon because historically, organisations that have outsourced their security to a team abroad have usually had a lot of security issues/security breaches later on down the line because they do not check/scan the security of the company as frequently as an in-house security team would.

This also conflicts with what a laid-off security employee has said about the situation where they disputed Patreon's claims of this decision not impacting their security by alleging that Patreon has cut down of its use of external security vendors in the past four months.

So what does this mean for Patreon's future and how am I affected?

What this means is that there are things going on behind the scenes at Patreon that we do not know about yet, all we know is that the leadership over there is making incredibly unwise business decisions by firing their entire internal security team and what this usually means is there will either be a huge security breach down the line or an announcement of a merger or acquisition.

Another potential risk is supporter deanonymisation, where attackers with malicious intent could blackmail subscribers that pledge to NSFW artists and kink content creators and threaten to reveal their Patreon pledges to an employer.

Your payment information (credit/debit card information) should be safe because Patreon do not process payment information themselves, they outsource it to Stripe and PayPal.

This blogpost by a cyber security professional is worth reading to know more on what to do about this situation.

Should I delete my Patreon account?

If you have no other option, then I would not delete my Patreon account especially if it is your only active source of income. What I would do is what I have listed above: by turning on two factor authentication through an app like Google Authenticator or Authy and changing your password to a randomly generated password so that you are not too much at risk when a security breach inevitably happens.

If you do have other options and are not as financially dependent on Patreon alone, then I would think about switching to other crowdfunding services like Ko-fi, SubscribeStar (I hear SubscribeStar is a good option for NSFW artists) and Comradery

I was originally going to create a Patreon for my interactive fiction/narrative game studio after I release the demo/first chapter of the interactive fiction game I'm currently working on (Mutants of Mayprice) but Patreon's lack of communication about this situation and their unwise decision of firing their entire internal security team (which wasn't many people to begin with, five people) does not leave me with a lot of confidence about the future of the platform.

MOONLIGHT CHICKEN – ASSISTANT DIRECTOR AU KORNPROM'S CAMEO (BUT IT'S ACTUALLY A CALLOUT TO MY SCHOOL PRESIDENT)

When Assistant Director Au appeared in Moonlight Chicken as a bubble tea vendor at Ep.5 [2/4] 2.05, it got me wondering whether it was simply the cast and crew having a bit of fun (as with a number of the vendor cameos in Bad Buddy), or whether there was any greater significance (as with GMMTV producers/directors and their cameos in other series before – see this link here).

After all, Au Kornprom Niyomsil is not the director of Moonlight Chicken. But the cameo, while brief and unannounced, reads like a purposeful flourish – Director Aof saved Assistant Director Au's appearance for just a few seconds in the very last half-minute of the scene, so as to maximize the impact of this Aha! moment. This lends the cameo some weight, and I think there is meaning behind it too.

It’s especially significant that the one buying the bubble tea (chaa nom khai mook, or ชานมไข่มุก) is Fourth, in character as teenager Li Ming. And what Li Ming says to Jim at Ep.5 [2/4] 1.57 ("It's not for you") is significant too.

The connection that Fourth and Assistant Director Au have is that the latter is Fourth's director in My School President, which not coincidentally also broadcast its finale the same week as Assistant Director Au's cameo in Moonlight Chicken.

Now MSP is a feelgood vehicle clearly directed at a younger crowd. It's been crafted for maximum teenybopper appeal (does anyone still use this term though? 🤷‍♂️), with photogenic leads, lots of earcandy songs, cutesy sound effects, gigil/geram-inducing props (that chinchilla hoodie! 😍), uncomplicated storytelling and loads of sweet, affirming moments. All formulaic elements that management and marketing must be beaming at, that are likely to up MSP's money-making popularity in the teen segment and bring in cash from associated sidelines as well (young teens being the most willing to fork out cash for collateral merchandise, or so the current wisdom goes).

I'm not intending to suggest that teens are incapable of appreciating darker, heavier fare, mind you. But I do think the studios are keenest on less demanding, inoffensive output that they can then spin out into all sorts of income streams (music and merchandise being the most obvious, but also concerts and fanmeets as well). This would be logical for any commercial enterprise (which is what they are, after all) but if any among their stable of writers and directors are approaching their work with social consciousness too, well, there are bound to be clashes when pressure mounts to go in a lighter direction.

So to me, MSP is a bit of a rainbow-colored unicorn, a rare confluence of both these drivers (commercial orientation and social conscience, albeit applied with a gentler touch). Underneath its sugary BL theatrics are also positive messages aimed at bolstering the self-esteem and awareness of LGBTQ+ youth still coming to grips with the realities of their identities in cishet-dominated society. That its primary audience is not made up of adults may align nicely with management directives on the commercial front, but it also allows for its underlying message to be targeted as well.

When Li Ming says (a little too smugly) "It's not for you", with MSP's director then handing him the boba, the message is that it's the younger crowd that's being prioritized (not in Moonlight Chicken, ironically, but in My School President).

MSP is especially for teenagers just starting to find their own way in life, not so much older adults who've already figured out (at least partly) who they are and how they fit into society (although everyone is quite welcome to watch along; one message of BL is surely "no gatekeeping" as long as you carry no ill-intent 🥰).

So this is the message of Assistant Director Au's cameo, I think – just as his bubble tea vendor persona is providing teens Li Ming and Heart with a sweet, tasty treat that they will enjoy, as director of MSP (and possibly future projects in the same vein) he's doing much the same thing by delivering a carefully-crafted confection designed to be especially palatable for a younger audience.

And just as bubble tea is known for containing its addictive pearls, teen-oriented BLs like MSP (created by Director Au's hand) will also contain something more substantial for you to chew on within (noting that the word khaimook or pearl also carries the connotation of precious value).

To older folk who might not quite appreciate the offering for what it is (like when Jim says "I don't want it" at Ep.5 [2/4] 1.53) – well, a teen show is not really intended for you anyway (which is the meaning behind Li Ming's retort – he's not just being sassy, although that does have significance for Moonlight Chicken's plot too 😊). Jim's of course welcome to consume it if he wants or likes. But I think his tastes swing toward the more meaty and savory anyway; this is Moonlight Chicken after all. 💖

At the time of writing this, I still hadn't watched Episodes 5 and 6 in full. But this scene was giffed and commented on so much I had to at least watch this bit. I was waiting for Director Aof to put in a cameo too, so this is what I wrote at first:

I think there's a strong chance it will happen. But what will it mean though? 🤷‍♂️

I'll save Director Aof's cameo for another post though. I have thoughts about it – something rings ominous about how it was presented, and I'm not sure yet if we should wait for more to be revealed. 🤔

I’m continuing to love how My School President takes the standard bl tropes but approaches them in unique ways. Episode 6 gave us the ‘I don’t want to be friends’ trope, which I usually despise because it is often used as a misdirect before the actual confession, making the other think they don’t like the. Bad Buddy used it, and managed to just get away with it due to the ongoing conflict prior to the roof scene. Other shows rarely earn that though.

In MSP however, you really felt for both Tinn and Gun in that moment. The confession had already happened. They both were aware of their own feelings as well as that of their love interest. The conflict keeping them apart was an arbitrary rule that the music club has. They had tried being just friends knowing they both had feelings for the other, but they couldn’t do it. Neither of them wanted to be ‘just friends’. So when Tinn told Gun he couldn’t be friends with him, it was immediately followed by him saying he liked Gun. There was no need to misdirect the audience or Gun about his feelings, because Gun already knows. And Gun told Tinn that he felt the same way. They may have had a hard time being honest about their feelings before this episode, but now that they have have both confessed, they are able to talk through their conflict and find solutions that will work for them both. These teenage boys have better comments skills than a lot of bl couples with years of life experience behind them.

Why did Gun dream of Tinn in the first episode?

Is the T-rex plushie on Gun's backpack going to have a back story or why is it on screen so much?

What did Tinn mean by "it will be unforgettable, even if you want to forget it?"

Who ordered the food? If it was Tinn, how did Gun knew it was him?

Did Gun made the milk/ice for chinzhilla back in EP 1? Mom told him to do it, so then in episode 5, why did he say he didn't remember how to do it as it has been a long time since the last time he did it?

How did the "i will befriend him and ask for his homework" guy become the "I'd rather sing naked than to ask something from him"?

What does Tinn's mom think of Gun?

How did our guy manage to get Tiwson out of the scene to dance with Tinn?

This is pure due to ignorance about guitars, but are gun's acoustic guitar and Tinn's dad one truly different or why did they need to get one for Yo. Was that for the plot or is Gun's guitar the one that his dad bought him on his birthday and he doesn't want someone who isn't him to play that one?

Did Tiwson and Tinn met in the crosswords club?

Is Por really naive or is he hiding behind that precious little smile of him?

How the fuck does Gun's memory work? 🤨 I'm judging Mr reach out first and then do as if you don't remember the head of class guy.

Did no one saw that gun drawing tinn did on the temple concert documentation???

Is Tinn allowed to come to the temple concert again as judge or is he banned due to bribing (with charm) the attendants? (They got more donations, will money overcome fairness?)

Are we going to get more scenes of classmates chatting about the supposed student council vs music club situation?

What is tinn's mom relationship with the music club and overall, music? Why is her hubby hiding his own guitar from her?

Is chinzhilla THAT DUMB or are they just waiting for gun to confirm and be all like "wbk"?

What will be Kajorn's reaction when seeing that his adored school president is in love with chinzhilla's leader?

Did gun knew it was Tinn's birthday that day in the shop? Was it an impulse or was it planned? Why that specific song?

Why did Gun ask Tinn to be dance partners?

Are we gonna get a scene or something of gun opening up with his band and friends as Tinn does with Tiw?

Why did sound get to this school in the middle of their last year?

If Tiwsonpor is a thing, when did it start?

Who will be the first couple to announce that they're dating openly?

Is tinn's mom or dad related to gun's dad in any way?

Is win going to be able to achieve his dreams?

Did no one really see tinngun's pool scene in EP 6?

How will sound react when he gets to know that his lifetime rival is in love with his band's leader? How will he react when knowing that gun loves him back and Tinn is not a common enemy?

salty prelude to this one, but: i watched my school president, found it absolutely adorable and couldn’t put it down until i finished it. then i tried our skyy 2: my school president and got about 10 min into the first one before i went ".....this is everything i hate in an AU" and stopped watching.

there's nothing that makes me back out of a fic faster than something that tries to force characters to fit other characters' dialogue/actions/whatever. i don't want to read two characters from one show reading out the script of a different movie, i want to see how those two characters would react and change if they'd been put into the situation/premise of a different movie. i think the premise of Gun as school president vs Tinn the music club head could've been a lot of fun, but i want to see Gun and Tinn in those roles, not Gun playing out Tinn's scenes and vice versa. it's such a missed opportunity and the few cute moments that were present can't sway me from my overall irritation. :/

so with that spicy take out of the way, some notes on how i'd do a msp roleswap AU:

Gun is still forced into the school president role. this is literally the universe conspiring against him. Jorn is 1000% unsympathetic to his plight and has to follow Gun any time the music club is involved because he overheard Gun lamenting he forgets the rulebook every time Tinn smiles. honestly, he deserves senior status for this nonsense. his college application is absolutely going to reference working under these unjust conditions.

music club still features Pat, Yo, and Win alongside Tinn and Tiw. Yo can keep Pat's glasses because that was funny. but Gun's friend group is Sound and Por, and Sound is still a popular guitar soloist on youtube because:

Tiw: what our club needs is new growth! we need fresh eyes! fresh ears! fresh hands! we need *points to Sound* HIM! Tinn: nO

Tiw: what?????? Tinn: we've been music rivals since elementary school, i will NOT work with the enemy

Tiw: but Tinn! you must! our club depends on it!!! THINK OF OUR FUTURE TINN Tinn, to the tune of 'even my bed hates me': why does the universe conspire against me 😭😭

-cut to Tinn approaching Sound-

Tinn: hi. Sound. i- Sound: -want me to carry your mediocre band through the festival so you can pretend you bring glory to the school and your club won't get kicked. let me save you your breath: no. Tinn: well, i- we- WE DONT NEED YOU ANYWAYS JERK

not seen by Tinn is Gun materializing behind a pillar to Stare Down Sound. Do It For His Honey Sound. We Are Friends Sound. Do It For Him Sound. You Should Help Your Friends Sound.

Sound, gritting his teeth: ...fine Tiw teleporting to slap his hand over Tinn's mouth before he can object: AWESOME practice starts at 3! :D!

Tiw holding Sound's shoulders: hey guys! as you can see, we have new blood in the club! Pat: Sound i get, we wanted him. but what's with other two? *camera pans out to show Gun and Por sitting in the back*

Gun and Por: *keep on smiling, maybe they won't notice* Sound, sighing to the heavens: this is why i'm a fucking soloist

you've seen Gun's ridiculous jealousy and Tinn's unhinged crush fantasies, now get ready for *drum rolls* Gun's unhinged daydreams of jealous!Tinn 🥳

Gun's regular reoccurring fantasy is Tinn being so overcome with jealousy he stakes his claim on him. no cutesy daydreams of heart equations or mv-esque beach hangouts, Gun's daydreaming about Tinn getting so annoyed and jealous about Gun's attention not being solely on him that he kicks the rest of the band out of their study group or serenades him in front of the whole school. he wants them to be the smug It couple of their school and anyone talking to Tinn is potential fodder for a daydream starring Gun draping himself over Tinn's shoulder and rubbing "we're BOYFRIENDS" in everyone's faces.

so those are a handful of things i'd change. there's still more proper plot things i'd change to maximize Gun and Tinn being ridiculous in their new roles, but whatever no one cares lol. however, for all the things i'd change, the one absolutely most essential thing i'd keep from our skyy 2 canon are the lion and chinchilla headbands. adorable, sensational, no notes, they could've just released 40min of the actors wearing those and teasing each other and i'd eat it up like a starved man at a banquet.

My School President Ep 8

It never fails to move me, when people in love give each other support, words of encouragement and affirmation. Tinn and Gun are good at this on regular basis, but went above and beyond in this episode and aced the "perfect couple test" without even being a couple :)

Communication is the key and nothing can change that simple fact. It’s obvious how Tinn's constant verbal support helps Gun succeed. Gun doesn’t stay behind and also supports Tinn in pursuing his dreams. I love how they put each other first, even at times in their lives when they could be selfish and demand full attention. “You did great” How simple. Yet how powerful.

I loved jealous Tinn. Personally, I like my boys being jealous and possessive, but without being bully and creepy, as it happens so often in the BL series. Tinn is jealous, but matter-of-factly states, that actually he has no right to be as they’re not together yet and decides, that he won't act silly . So he doesn't make stupid scenes, doesn't annoy Gun, doesn't stress him with attacks/silent treatment right before his important event. Not only that - he puts aside his jealousy and continues to help Gun. 💯💯

I’m constantly impressed by Fourth and his acting, his micro-expressions. I was especially touched by how he portrayed Gun finally achieving his long awaited and desired success in the scene with Tinn, when he barely keeps his emotions in check... Heartbreaking 🥺

MSP continues to be such a good show, it's funny - I mean I laughed many times during this ep, it's touching, it's emotional. (also, I'm fully aware it's too early in the plot, but can’t help but wish they'd kissed already 😏)

so yesterday this thought popped into my mind about pat. i’ve known about prom and mark since bad buddy and i hopelessly shipped chang and mo bc they looked so cute 😭 and the behind the scenes of ep 6 sparked my love for markprom again and made me really want pat and tiw to end up together (i had rooted for those two secretly since msp trailer but shh).

but then pat and por had so many cute scenes in episode 6 that my endless thoughts about those two ignited.

so i thought, why not all of them?

why not all three pairings? why not poly? i can’t stop thinking about tiwpatpor especially with the cute ramen shop scene, like the possibilities?? i just love pat sm and his two boyfriends who are endlessly in love and show that at any given moment. and it sucks that poly usually isn’t considered in series with love triangles, like why not all of them date? i wished gmmtv would explore this but it doesn’t seem likely :( unless they already have and i haven’t seen it

Thai BL Favourites List Tag Game

Favourite bl:

tough choice between bbs and msp. but I'll go with bbs for the same reasons as user grapejuicegay. it's my first one, which literally changed my life. I've never quite been the same since bbs. also the fact that we are sometimes still getting to know more facts about some scenes... sigh. p'aof created a masterpiece. truly

Favourite pairing:

again. a really tough choice.... cuz you see the list? but I would like to choose geminifourth (am I being biased with that? yes maybe but whatever)

I have so many and I'm gonna name some😀 satang kittiphop (It's not really a surprise to y'all 😭ik I've been very subtle with my satang served thingey I know); marc pahun. idk if he's great or not but he's cute (also to mention his pairing with pawin. they're cute asf); also neo and mark(they are not really under the wraps now but still)

Favourite character:

Heart. he has such a strong chokehold on me. like I can't explain how this goes and what all things I like about him but I do know I will give up my life (not really a tough thing💀) for him anytime

some honourable mentions- li ming cuz this 18 year old teenager has so much anger and love in him. and he's such a powerful face of a gen z created by p'aof... sigh;

wen mostly cuz he's so relatable as a character who just fell out of love. his lover did nothing wrong, it's just the simple and the hard truth that people can fall out of love the same way they fell in

(why are my favourite characters from mlc💀 hmm something about the realistic and simple thing in the series. also the helplessness of the characters and the situations they are in. the way they try to make it work with how much they have)

Favourite side character:

Tiw(msp) and Max(bmf). it's a no brainer when it comes to as why they're my favourite side character. The support and friendship they offer to their friend? unparallel. Its so nice🤧

Favourite scene:

surprise surprise madafakas. NO BUT LOOK AT THAT. a pure work of fucking art. the lights behind pran being subdued and less while the lights behind pat being more and lighted.

The fact that they kissed not inside a hidden place but outside. In the open. Its not hidden in the confinement of their rooms but its open to the world how much they want each other. The fact that their first kiss was out in the open.... idk I'm not okay

Favourite line:

"Romeo, ai'shia Romeo" 💀im so sorry y'all I can't be serious anymore
