It’s really difficult to design an intersection that everyone is happy with. I’m no civil planner, but I do understand the all-displeasing dance that is the gathering of requirements. There’s a lot of different people who have to use your average city four-way. Truckers. Commuters. Terrified grandmothers who are clutching a loaded .38 just out of sight of the window, ready to blast through the door card if they get pulled over again. Bicyclists. Snowmobilers. Me.
You simply can’t please all of these people simultaneously: one friendly choice pisses off another. There’s two things you can do to get out of this sort of situation. The first one is compromise, reducing your vision in every direction, bit by bit, like a coward until everyone grumbles about the pointless grey wasteland that they spend at least two minutes a day waiting for a little light to turn green at. And the other is saying: fuck it, take a risk. Pick a winner.
Sometimes a winner is obvious: on the highway there’s not a lot of room for horse-drawn carriages, whether or not those horses are in fact mice transformed and forced into indenture by witchcraft. Call me a hippie if you want, but I think the right choice in every circumstance is to optimize for the slowest vehicle. Not pedestrians, you freeloaders have enough sidewalks. No, I mean the weird guy down the street with a recumbent bicycle. He’s got money, he’s pretty vocal about his choice of transportation, and there’s a pretty good chance if we give him everything he wants he won’t set a homemade bomb underneath City Hall.
There’s other benefits to letting the slowest road user win, too. All of us are, at one time or another, the slowest. Maybe we’re looking for an address. Perhaps our shitty automatic transmission has lost first through second with that one raunchy upshift on the hill before. If the road is designed to coddle us, to take care of our momentary loss of performance competence, then things won’t be so bad. Build nice green shoulders of grass on the sides of that road, too, so I have something to drive on to get around your slow ass.

October 18, 2022- Tuesday | Fall Challenges 5/30 + 9/30
Today I only had one class. I finished up my latest crochet and embroidery projects, gifted the scarf I made to my dad, swept and vacuumed my room, wore a brand new set of clothes after showering, caught up on journaling in my planner, and played genshin while listening to lectures. I wish I did more work though 😬 I have a lot to catch up on.
🍂 memory of autumn that puts a smile on your face: the picture above is from a field research day we had in the autumn for my ecology lab class. We were setting up cameras and plastic mice in hopes of getting some pictures of their predators. It was drizzling and there were leaves everywhere and my hands were freezing but I remember having so much fun because it was such a nice little trip to break up the monotony that was the life of a bio student living between lectures, labs and exams. Later we ended up having some footage of cute woodland creatures and birds interacting with our fake mice and being confused 😭🥺 It was one of the joys of my stressful senior year of college and I remember it fondly 💕

I have a few! Which are ... totally not projection, nope.
I headcanon Raz as grayromantic ace! He seems pretty grossed out or weirded out by a lot of the romance going on at camp, which I know is not inherently an ace trait, but that's how I was, so shhhhh. The grayromantic part comes from how he finds himself falling for Lili sortof out of nowhere, though romance had clearly been the farthest thing from his mind. It's not really demiromantic since he didn't get to spend a lot of time with Lili before falling for her, but still, romantic attraction is something that's pretty rare for him.
(and again yes I know he's a kid but looking back I can see traits of my own aroaceness as far back as like 1st grade so shhhhh)
I also very much headcanon Raz as having ADHD just because I recognize so many of my own ADHD traits in him. His heavy obsession over certain topics (the Psychonauts and psychology in general), his constant need to move around, his being a little chatterbox, his CONSTANT note-taking and constantly updating his very organized planner, his sketching in the margins of his planner?? Seriously all the note-taking and maintaining of a planner (and even doodling in the margins of it) is classic ADHD coping mechanisms (and one of the main reasons it took me until my 30s to find out I had ADHD because I found coping mechanisms that worked for me oops).
Also I have this silly headcanon that like, when Raz started developing zoolepathy, he would hear the thoughts of mice and rats and whatnot at night, and wake up his siblings, insisting that there were people trying to get into the cart, or thinking that there were monsters or ghosts outside. (Which, I think his zoolepathy is still pretty basic and mainly limited to "pest" animals like rats, squirrels, mice, etc, and he can't always understand them 100% of the time, though he could probably develop the skill more later.)

My original fiction is mostly thriller/romantic suspense, and if you don't plan from the end in those genres and work backwards, editing WILL be hell. I start with big "set pieces" and build around them (to use one of my fics for an example of this, Feyre coming out of the Cauldron with wings was the big set piece I built around in to make them love me and make it seem effortless). I can write character details on the fly but for me at least, plot NEEDS to be set in stone before I can draft.
If you're a big color-coder, definitely read up on the MICE quotient! The Writing Excuses podcast did a wonderful deep dive on it, but you can find plenty of articles if you google it. Once you can break a piece up into its component MICE parts, you can plan and make pretty color-coded outlines. I think it's overkill for short pieces, BUT I did find that it helped me think through "ok where is this going/what would be a satisfying thing to happen next?" for the ACOTAR writing circle part two I just did. I think it lead to a cleaner first draft of chapter two of Fictional.
ALSO if you're a Notion user (or honestly, you could probably do this on any note-taking software like Obsidian), I find having a "landing page" for a project or group of projects helps! Even for things that ARE done by the seat of my pants, having an aesthetically pleasing little way of reminding myself what the "heart"/intended vibes are really helps with curbing all the tendencies to go down wild tangents that seem fun. There are a lot of templates you can tweak to find what works.

my first six months at purdue by @alexistudies
introduction/background
my first 6 months at purdue have been some of the most academically challenging months of my life since early in my undergraduate studies. if you're wondering why i am at purdue, it's because i am doing a post-baccalaureate research program. think of a master's program but 1) without the degree, 2) only one year long, and 3) fully funded - meaning courses & fees are covered and i get a decent paycheck every month. i chose to pursue this route instead of a master's program because i wanted to have a smooth transition from my undergrad discipline to this, and to confirm that pursuing biomedical engineering is truly something i want to do. moreover, all my master's program offers provided little to no funding so this also made the most financial sense.
research: what type of research i do + why its been an uphill battle
the lab i decided to join focuses on neural engineering using electrophysiology in mice to investigate ways of creating artificial sensation for neural prosthesis, while also looking at things like sensory encoding and deep brain stimulation for neurodevelopmental disorder treatment. because our work is in vivo, this means we learn how to do neurosurgeries of implanting electrodes in mice, then stimulation and recording while they're awake (and sometimes asleep depending on the project). this has been challenging to say the least because the surgeries require a lot of skill, tactfulness, and patience. plus, animals are unpredictable.
i joined my lab in july, started getting trained on the surgeries in august and began practicing in september. these surgeries require a certain level of skill and technique that i just haven't acquired yet, but we're trying! due to my struggles of surgeries being unsuccessful, some mice dying, etc... i haven't collected any data yet. however, i can tell that after winter break, i should be able to restart surgeries and collect data .. which would be GREAT since i'm presenting at a conference in February (probably)
grad school
despite the struggles with actual experiments and such, this has been great preparation for graduate school becauuuse we all know graduate school is a marathon and not a sprint. i was successful in submitting all my PhD and fellowship applications and i can't wait to see how things turn out. i've already had 1 interview event, and i've been notified of 3 others. things are looking up.
outside of the literal applications, i have taken 2 light graduate level classes on sci-comm and using citation management software. recently switched from mendeley to zotero and i can't say i'm mad about it. additionally, i'll be taking a more meaty course in the spring called Neural Systems. i'm looking forward to it content wise, i'm just hoping i can handle the coursework on top of interviews and research obligations. my planner will be my savior.

living on my own! super exciting and enlightening. very freeing. oh and seeing snow REALLY fall for the first time!
finding some cool coffee shops around campus
experiencing a campus with a lot of school pride and culture... you can't beat that. my undergrad institution was a commuter school catering to a different population, so that vibe wasn't present. this is a nice 180
presenting at ABRCMS
other struggles
rebuilding a support group here. i have my partner, my lab, and 1 or 2 friends but i'm really hoping to meet more people next semester. this will be crucial if i decide to stay here for my PhD
not having a car. whew its rough but we're making moves to get a vehicle soon. no later than August 2023
solid 7/10 if you ask me, but lets check back in after winter is over lol
