It seems there is a recent fad among "revisionist" Lovecraftians is to give their works the names of Lovecraft's iconic stories and concepts. So now besides the short story The Night Ocean by Barlow and Lovecraft we have the novel The Night Ocean by Paul La Farge; there is I Am Providence, famous biography of Lovecraft by S.T. Joshi, and there is also I Am Providence by Nick Mamatas, a murder mystery set in the NecronomiCon in Providence; there is a concept of "Lovecraft Country" as in "New England as a horror setting" and there is "Lovecraft Country", the book by Matt Ruff and the TV adaptation of it; finally, we have At the Mountains of Madness, the story by H.P. Lovecraft and In the Mountains of Madness, a biography of Lovecraft by W. Scott Poole. What these books have in common is that their authors are quite critical of Lovecraft and aim to "deconstruct" the ways in which we are used to perceive his stories and life. The titles are clearly a part of this purpose but, frankly, I don't know how to feel about it. It doesn't help that, while I'm glad that the works of this kind exist, I wasn't particularly impressed with authors' degree of understanding and analysis of Lovecraft, and in the context of some of the recent discourse about Lovecraft (you know, "Lovecraft is not as good as people who came after him") the choice of titles, though provocative, looks like an attempt to sort of "replace" the old problematic versions with the newer, improved ones. Whether this trend will continue and how successful it will be, I can't say - it is already a bit successful in the case of "Lovecraft Country" - but it's certainly an interesting one.

Kolkata, Nov 23: Signaling a clear policy of retaliation in view of the successive arrests of the Trinamool Congress heavyweights in connection with various cases of alleged corruption, West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, on Thursday said that henceforth if four persons from her team were arrested she would ensure counter-arrests of eight in all cases already framed against them.
“Four of your legislators are behind bars now. They want to lessen our count through such arrests. Now if they arrest four of us, I will get eight of them arrested by reopening the old cases already registered against them,” the Chief Minister said while addressing an organisational convention of the Trinamool Congress at the Netaji Indoor Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
