Thinking about how Althea is kinda doomed forever to be first mate (and never captain) to her husband on ship that stares at her with the eyes of her rapist
Like, she goes through all of this so she can captain the Vivacia- her fathers ship. Only for Vivacia to be passed to Kyle Haven’s heir.
and then the soul of the man who raped her becomes a part of the only ship she has left. And instead of letting her feel the way she feels about that - instead of letting her be angry and difficult - paragon takes away her ‘pain’ and makes her agreeable again.
She will never captain a Liveship. That was her dream - her one goal in life. And she will never get it. Because her husband is her captain. Because she is doomed to never be Althea Vestrit, but instead Captain Trell’s wife.
And then she has a son, who Paragon - with Kennit’s soul and eyes - gets to play with.
How would she really feel about what her life has become if she were allowed to actually feel it?

Was no one gonna tell me that Amber literally says the love of her life gave her the earring or was I just supposed to read that for myself in the Liveship Traders

The thing about liveship traders that I think is so dope is that from page one you’re given exactly the tools that the vestrits will use to get through everything together. They are traders, they bargain. They don’t just bargain their way into marriages, they bargain their way out of poverty, into new government structures, into the favor of the most powerful people and creatures in their world, into royal status among dragons and pirates and diplomats, until they’re literally shaping a new society and new relationship with humanity entirely. From day one we understand that this family has a specific skill set and then they use it to dig their way out of hell.
