Muse full gigs
Some full shows that are available, for anyone who wants to partially relive the Muse live experience.
I figured no one's made lists in a while.
La Cigale, Paris By-Request gig 2018
youtube
rarities + I guarantee I'm gonna fuck up Space Dementia + water spitting + Matt and Dom playing Grammy hosts in the way they announced the winners of the by-request polls
Some cool and noteworthy gigs:
Live Lounge 2012
The Mayan 2015 (performance wise this gig was stunning)
Royal Albert Hall 2008 (Teenage Cancer Trust charity gig - Megalomania on the pipe organ!)
Reading Festival 2011 (10 years of Origin of Symmetry - played the album start to finish)
AOL Sessions 2006
Reading 2006 (Muse's first time headlining if I remember right. Plus, Matt's moves!)
Glastonbury 2004 (first Glasto headline and a must-watch! Of the iconic mad-scientist, white lab coat era. Muse had called it the best gig of their life so far, at the time) (*Ruled By Secrecy was played live but wasn't included in the concert footage DVD and isn't in this video upload either)
Montreaux Jazz 2002 (height of piano maniac-ery days. Would also recommend Pinkpop 2002 but they don't. have. the footage anymore :( Space Dementia at Pinkpop 2002 was phenomenal. 2004 is also good, but I never found 2002 again. Speaking of which,)
Pinkpop 2004 (most songs are in, a few performances missing unfortunately)
MCM Café 1999 (marvel at what a good live act this young band aged 21 already was—with about 4 years of gigging experience under their belts. Insane how good they are.)
Wembley 2007 (H.A.A.R.P. The first band to sell out the newly rebuilt Wembley Stadium. 90,000 people. You need to understand, seeing Chris lift up and point his bass at the crowd at the end of the slightly modified Jimmy Jam riff before Time Is Running Out was a religious experience that changed me and we're lucky enough to live in an age where you and I can witness it over and over and over again and I'd suggest that you do)
Rock Am Ring 2018, uploaded to the Internet Archive by the Muse Historical Society!
Austin City Limits 2013 Philipshalle 1999 Philipshalle 2001 (all suggested in notes, check out the crystal clear gifs from @hotbellamy! :O )
A few additions I remembered after publishing: Eurockeennes 2000 (opened with a then-unreleased New Born. Matt playing a full gig in red sunglasses. Treat to watch. Link's stretched up to fit modern screens but if you want a bit of clarity and don't mind the late 90s ratio stretch, here's a different link) 2002 (quality's a bit shit but that is literally what telly used to look like)
Shepherd's Bush Empire 2006 (Early gigs are always interesting because over time Muse develop different ways of playing songs that are fresh off new albums. The way they work through Take A Bow live is a bit different here, Dom's the one controlling the opening verse synths! During the Abso tour, Matt would play that bit on the piano as an intro to Space Dementia and if I'm remembering right, he does now on the pianos (correct me—this was on the ST tour as well). Also, Starlight in Bm at this gig)
Rock Werchter 2023 (Muse play Rock Werchter in Belgium almost every year, except for the pandemic and 2012 I think, but this year's was a bit special. Best performance of Madness I've seen in a while, I love what he does in the outro! MOTP returns to the set. Muse had tech troubles at the end that caused them to restart Knights of Cydonia twice, to no avail. They finally cut it back for a guitar-bass-drum-vocals-only performance of Showbiz, and Matt's voice sounds exceptional on it— the best in recent years)
Bizarre Fest 2000 (BLESS SOMEONE HAS RESTORED THIS FROM VHS TAPE IN HD, this is so much better than back in the day!! If the falsetto at 1:13 doesn't do it for you, you're into the wrong band, nothing else will help. What an electric performance this was!)
Gigs from WOTP 2022/23 festivals tour last summer:
Nova Rock Rock In Rio Ejekt Fest Isle of Wight Hurricane Festival 2023 (a festival at which Matt once complained that Muse's set was cut short by... hurricanes. But the audio mixing at this gig was really good!)
These are in no particular order, and obviously not complete, I just realised no one had put together a gig archive in a while so I thought I'd give it a stab!
Will edit and add others whenever, there are obviously glaring omissions still!

may I ask about the mitski curse or is it secret knowledge
*LONG POST INCOMING* It all started in 2016.
I've been a Mitski fan since 2014 when First Love/Late Spring premiered on Stereogum and desperately wanted to see her live. The chance finally came after I moved to New York; I had tickets for her show in February 2016 at The Knitting Factory. But then. A freeze hit the city that weekend, resulting in a pipe in the shitty apartment bursting so I missed the show because I had to wait for the emergency repair guy to come by. Okay, well that's a bummer, I though. I've been waiting for almost two years to see Mitski but surely I'll get another chance. July 2016. I was living in Texas for the summer, a few hours away from Austin, where Mitski had a show scheduled. Perfect! I can drive up to the show! My old, barely functioning truck can handle the drive! It did not. My car broke down two hours outside Austin.
November 2016. Third try to see Mitski in a year is the charm, right? Oh wait, I waited too long to buy a flight to my grandma's for thanksgiving and I had to fly out the day of the Mitski show because every other flight was $500 more expensive.
By 2017 I was starting to get worried. I had tickets to see her April 2017, but I got horrific food poisoning and couldn't get out of bed for three days.
I didn't get another try until late 2018 on the Be The Cowboy tour during her 4 night residency at Brooklyn Steel. Except Mitski's popularity had blown up significantly and I couldn't get tickets when they went on sale the first three shows. BUT THEN a fourth show was added, on a Monday night, and I finally got tickets! Perfect! Until I had a final project for one of my classes scheduled the same night that I could not miss without failing the class, and I desperately tried to find tickets for another night but none were available for under $300.
At that point I was convinced: I was cursed. There were no tour dates I was even able to TRY to make, and then in September 2019 Mitski played Summer Stage (two weeks after I moved from New York) and announced it would indefinitely be her last live show.
October 2021: Mitski releases Working for the Knife and announces a tour. The closest tour date to where I was living was 8 hours away, but I fought for my life for tickets and was determined I would finally break the curse.
I got COVID two days before Mitski's Denver show in March 2022.
BUT WAIT! Mitski was announced as one of the openers for HSLOT's European stadium leg! And my friends and I planned a bar trip to Scotland that lined up with the weekend of Harry's show in Glasgow! Okay, maybe seeing Mitski as an opener at a stadium show isn't ideal, but I was desperate. Except, of course, the stadium entry was a complete mess, and we didn't get into the show until the very end of Mitski's set. I had finally seen her live, but for 8 minutes and at what cost.
I wasn't happy, but I told myself it wasn't the end of the world because I already had plans to see Mitski at the All Things Go festival in October, so redemption would come soon enough. Then Hurricane Ian hit and my flight to DC that had a layover in Orlando was cancelled the day before I was supposed to leave. At that point, there was nothing I could do but laugh. Why did I think it would go any differently this time? No. I couldn't take it anymore. I dropped wayyyyy too much money on a different flight to DC with no layover. That flight was delayed by 5 hours, but I made it. Nothing was going to stop me.
Mitski's set starts. We're in the pit, I'm 5'2" so I'm on my tip toes, straining my neck to keep my eyes on Mitski. And then. Everyone's BeReals went off during Francis Forever and the crowd became a sea of phones. I was crushed. I had broken the curse, but 9 years too late.

Albums I Loved in 2022
November - Live Rust (1978)
youtube
"Every band rusts," we're told by a man dressed as a research scientist while Neil looks on in playful childlike wonder. This is presented to be the consequence of the musicians getting caught in the rain a bit earlier in the show, an uncanny echo of the stormy memory of the Woodstock Festival. They play on.
At the time of this post, Neil and Crazy Horse have been rusting together for over five decades, recently releasing their World Record album. No one seems to know exactly which number it is in their chronology, but it's certainly up there. And it's a gift in every way. I very seriously contemplated awarding it the first place spot this month, but it was hard to knock this one off of the podium for fear of retaliation. It's that strong.
I think I'm finally starting to get it. Crazy Horse is a relentless beast that clops along at a strenuous but sustained pace, and Neil is the six-foot jockey steering them down the track. By the same token, they're his tether to earth, so he doesn't go flying off into space when they round the curves (which, from the sound of it, could be entirely possible). He's comfortably saddled atop knowing that they've got it down, and it gives him freedom to let go of the reins. It worked then, and it works now. They're still going. It's 75% of the same exact unit that plays on the new album, and it's given me perspective in hearing this record as it reveals the threads that continue to hold them together. They've got the range to round out "Lotta Love" and reenergize "Tonight's the Night" and endure the exhaustive force of "Like A Hurricane." You can let yourself get a little lost in it and trust that you'll be brought back no sooner than you need to be.
But we get to experience that rush only after we're treated to the proven formula of Neil opening alone on harmonica and a twelve-string guitar (😍), illustrating what would be the story of his life through song. And he is completely radiant: absolutely nothing's missing. In fact, that's exactly what I wanted when I first sought out this performance (blessedly, captured on video in the film of the same name). It was one of those nights where I felt like disappearing from the rest of the world. So I just lay in bed and watched, letting it erase everything that wasn't Neil. Little by little I felt myself soften with it, and by the time they brought out the electrics the feeling in my veins was something completely different. What an incredible power music has. There's not much more to say.

Foals at E-Werk Köln | 21 June 2022
A  very long tale about the day I ended up in Köln instead of Berlin, met the boys at the record shop, got front row spots again and had a quite surreal experience overall.
It's half past six in the morning and I'm sitting on the sofa in an apartment somewhere in the east of Köln. It's a weird feeling to be here all by myself after what has happened in the past 24 hours. But wait, how did I end up in Köln? Shouldn't I have been in Berlin right because of the Aurora concert? Yeah well... about that...
I was supposed to go to Aurora's concert and had booked everything already. The catch was, I had to choose between Aurora and Foals, who somehow managed to be in Germany at the exact same time. I really love Aurora and I'm sad I didn't get to experience her live yesterday.
Rachel (whom I met in Berlin at the Foals concert) has asked me if I'll be in Köln. I told her no, I had other plans. Last weekend there was the Hurricane festival, which I was supposed to attend with Charlotte, but decided against it. Last Friday Foals released their new album and did a small livestream on Instagram – while sitting in Hamburg.
That was the first time I realised I was somehow quite sad, because I ended up crying at the kitchen table after returning from my riding lesson. On top of that, I somehow managed to miss out on both livestreams from Hurricane and Southside. But that alone wouldn't have been enough to change my mind.
A few days ago, a record shop announced there would be a signing session in Köln. Still, I had just met them a few weeks ago. On Sunday noon, I received a message from Mickey, whom I met in Amsterdam. He asked me if I was going to Köln because he has been thinking about going there last minute.
I told him, no, I'm not going, please give the boys my greetings. Then started crying. Now I was unhappy about the prospect of going to Berlin all alone instead of seeing some people again who are actually asking about me
Enter insanity. I told him that I was looking to change my plan. And we started planning out our trip. I don't know which part of this is more insane, maybe you can decide for me:
- Berlin tickets and accommodation are non-refundable, and I am not a millionaire - We have two days until the concert - for some reason (Billie Eilish and Lorde probably) the entirety of Köln is completely booked out, with prices starting from 110 € upwards for any kind of accommodation - this makes it way too expensive for getting a single room, so Mickey and I decided to share - I don’t know him other than having spent a few hours at a concert with him
But of course, why not, right?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
two days later, at home
Mickey said on Sunday evening, “Yes, let’s go” and I did not know whether to grin like an idiot or panic. So, I first grinned and then spent Monday and Tuesday morning with panicking. Seems fair. I don’t know why anxiety kicked in as much as it did, but it nearly made it impossible to prepare because I was shaking with fear.
I booked my trains and Mickey booked an Airbnb half an hour from the city centre and about the same time from the venue E-Werk. It was the only remotely affordable flat anywhere near we needed to be that did not just have one bed, but also a sofa. Oh well…
On Tuesday morning I was too nervous to eat anything and left the house with a bag of food and fear. In the train I tried to distract myself with Life Is Yours and Everything Everything, hoping that the uplifting music would relax me. That did not really happen.
Tumblr media
At least both the train to and from Hannover were fairly punctual, and so were his trains. Finally in Köln, I discovered that the station in fact has two entrances on the same side. I told Mickey I’d wait in front of Kamps bakery and started scanning the crowd. And what a crowd it was. It seemed like the entire town was up and about.
Then finally, when I already thought we won’t find each other and maybe I don’t remember anymore how he looks like, Mickey suddenly materialised in front of me. I asked myself how I ever thought I won’t recognise him. We both said hi in a rather awkward way and had a moment of doubting whether we should hug but decided to go for it. It was already about 12:40 and we decided to go and look for the Underdog Record Store which was only a few minutes’ walk from the station.
I happily let Mickey navigate (although we made a few wrong turns) and we tried to somehow become more familiar with each other. I remembered him as a very nice person who was pleasant to talk to and this impression was only confirmed. He told me about his university courses and about how exactly he happened to somehow be based in three countries at once. We talked a bit about Foals, but also about how this entire situation is a bit funny.
At some point I joked that my best friend was kind of shocked I was about to just go ahead on a trip with a “friend” I had only known for a few hours, and he laughed about that and said he’ll try to be a good companion.
We arrived at the tiny record shop way ahead of time and discovered they only sell vinyl. There was already a small queue, but we wanted to check out a bakery for food (not tasty enough) and a nearby Saturn for the LIY album. Just as I predicted the CD cost insane 18 €, but I gulped my guilt down and bought one, because it felt odd to arrive without any of their music.

The previous day I had already printed out some photos of the band members for Mickey and bought a strong white cardboard for myself for Yannis to write the lyrics of Mountain at My Gates. I was unsure whether that wouldn’t be too much work, but when we arrived back at the shop and saw Rachel and her friends Lea and Maggie, I saw it was not more work than they had brought.
Lea had a whole assortment of CDs and a big print from ENSWBL 1 deluxe she wanted to get signed. She wore a Pidge t-shirt and turned out to be quite the superfan, despite this being her first Foals concert. That was a good thing, because she craved to be at the barrier, and I knew we would be really late that day. So we were lucky I knew Rachel and could just come and join them later.
Rachel showed us the papaya and lemon she brought for Yannis, and we all burst out laughing, because it was a reference to his tweets about favourite fruit the previous day.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the devil – suddenly a black car with tinted windows pulled up at the store. The door opened – and a very smol and tired Yannis emerged. We stared at him and awkwardly greeted him, and he also said hi to us and proceeded to vanish inside the shop.
Yannis wore his red shirt with flowers that day, together with obligatory black jeans and white shoes. At some point he sat down in the little adjacent café and some woman, who seemed to be part of their team, brought a pile of cards and pencils. It was a bit odd because not only could we see him, but he was also watching us.
The awkwardness was alleviated by Jack suddenly appearing around the corner with his foldable bicycle, stylishly sporting one of Yannis old t-shirts, the grey-white-orange one with circle and spot patterns. He folded the bike and carried it in, greeting us in a good mood. By now it was already 2pm, but Jimmy was not here yet. He came a few minutes later with a woman and we were like “Hi Jimmy! You are late!” and he replied “Yes, I know I know”.
Tumblr media
I was starting to get quite nervous because we were one of the first in line, right after Rachel, Lea and Maggie. We caught a glimpse of Yannis with his papaya and giggled about it, but then it was suddenly our turn. I had joked that Mickey had to go first in case they will eat him alive, but they were in contrary incredibly sweet.
Tumblr media
[x]
Mickey put the photos on the table to sign and they said the photos look really cool and wanted to know where they are from. I said, these are my photos and pointed out which are from Amsterdam and which from Berlin and they complimented me about them. He asked Yannis if they can play his favourite song Exits, but he politely denied, saying that they may play it at a later point. Mickey also asked them to record a small birthday message for his friend Sasha. Jack was the one talking, and the others just chimed in with Happy Birthday.
Tumblr media
Now this was all taking quite a bit of time and their assistant woman (or whoever she was) wanted us to take a photo and move along but I said I still had some things to sign, sorry. The boys were very patient, but this woman clearly was not. Understandably so because there was quite a queue.
I started telling Yannis “Umm, hi I don’t know if you remember me, but we met in Berlin, I was the one who gave you the letter from Nikol.”  And he was like “oh, yes, sure, I remember!” and proceeded to thank her for the letter and the Chili. He said he liked it very much and “it is made of ceramics, right? I wore it a few times, it’s great” and the others also seemed to know what he was talking about. Then he said, without me mentioning it, “and thanks also for the soap, it is really good”. By that time my heart had already melted, to be honest.
I asked them if they could sign the CD for Nikol and they all proceeded to do so, but then Yannis wanted to write her name and asked me “How do you spell that?” and my brain sort of short-circuited and I forgot the alphabet and helpfully said “err, with K”. Thankfully Mickey had not lost his brain and spelled it out for him.
Tumblr media
To the dismay of the woman timekeeper I also asked Yannis very messily with compromised grammar whether he could write the chorus of Mountain at My Gates down for me “because it’s my favourite song and um err I always listen to it when err I- I think I can’t go on anymore and and I would hang it up on my wall and look at it” *facepalm*. Yannis said “yeah sure I’ll do that” but then he realised he did not know the lyrics and was like “umm oh I need to look that up” and I think even had the audacity to say “oh you should know your own lyrics” (while being too star struck to know them myself, mind you) and he apologetically told me about how it was difficult to remember them but how about I just leave the paper here with him and he’ll do it in between and hand it out to me later?
Of course, I agreed with that and was so happy and then we had to take one awkward photo in which I stood next to Jimmy and didn’t know where to turn myself… and then it was over and we went out.
I immediately sent out a voice message to N telling her about the Chili and then took a photo of the signed things. N first did not realise it is a signed CD and thought it is a card, but she was really happy about the news.
Mickey and I waited around for a bit to get the written lyrics. When the woman gave them out to me along with a little card, I couldn’t believe the precious gift I was holding in my hands. That song had really guided me through some heavy things and given me a lot of energy. To have it handwritten by the person who came up with the song in the first place is an invaluable gift.
Tumblr media
We also sent everything to Charlotte, and she started screenshotting it and was excited for us. She did not know we’d be in Köln and so it was a surprise for her. Meanwhile she was already on her way to Glastonbury. Rachel and the girls departed after exchanging approving glances at each other’s signed things.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mickey and I turned to go back to the main station to get some food and get the train to our accommodation. On our way I asked him about his family and about his friend Sasha. Since he is Ukrainian, he had quite some things to tell about how he and his family experience the war. Thankfully they are all alright, although the situation is of course less than ideal.
At the main station Mickey got himself some sandwich and was kind enough to sponsor my vegan couscous. We sat on the steps leading up to the Kölner Dom and talked about work and university, before going in for a quick glance at the Dom. We then took the train with the number eighteen and made our way to the accommodation, which is in a part of the city that reminded us more of a village than a big city.
I was a bit nervous because he was so spontaneous with determining when we had to get out, but he just laughed and told me to relax. Granted, my sixth sense saved us from missing our stop. Still, he was good at navigating, and we made it to the house with the number twelve, located in a quiet street.
After ringing the doorbell once or twice a nice woman opened the door and told us to come in. She asked why we are in the city and we tried to explain in English and German that we were here for Foals and the city is packed because of Billie Eilish and Lorde. She was very nice and showed us to our flat upstairs and explained how the key worked. After introducing us to her sweet black curly dog, we were left on our own.
The flat was quite big, with a corridor, a bathroom to the left, a kitchen straight ahead and a huge living and sleeping room with a wooden balcony. The living room had a huge double bed and a foldable sofa, as well as a dinner table and a TV. The balcony led out into the garden with a view on an idyllic pond. To be honest, if it had not been for the price, I’d stayed in this flat for much longer than one night.
We freshened up a bit, re-packed our bags and headed out to catch the train to E-Werk. It was around 4:30 pm by now and I was nervous about the state of the queue waiting for us, although I knew Lea was already there. The train took its sweet time to arrive and we had to catch a bus after.
By now all nervousness had disappeared and I was just happy to have a companion with me. He told really funny stories, like the one about his colleague telling the waiter in the restaurant “Ich warte!” in an attempt to practice his German. Mickey himself has quite impressive German skills although he claimed that Dutch has ruined his pronunciation (which was nearly perfect the whole time).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
We finally arrived at the venue with the bus, together with another dude wearing a Black Bull t-shirt. Apparently the bus stop is just in front of E-Werk. Me wanting to be at E-Werk for Coldplay in 2014 made me think it’d be a beautiful venue, but it really was quite small and shabby-looking with huge windows.
Said windows were almost shattering from the sound of Egyptian Blue soundchecking. Thankfully Rachel and the others were already there and I also saw the guy from Berlin with the Inhaler t-shirt (and again I managed to not ask his name, goddamn me, I am hopeless). He was wearing a Foals t-shirt today though and sat next to us all on the steps.
We had to admit Egyptian Blue sounded better from the outside than the inside of the venue and joked we’d just stay out here until they were done. Suddenly we noticed Jack behind the bushes next to the tour bus inconveniently parked in plain sight. He was talking to the guy in the Black Bull t-shirt, who had told us earlier that he missed the signing session. I guess he wanted a private signing session now, but security dared to disagree and sent him out.
We did not remain seated quietly for long, though, because N sent me a tweet with the coordinates of a hidden vinyl. Mickey and I got up and running down the street in an attempt to get there first – too late! Only minutes after the tweet the vinyl had already found a new owner. It was great fun though running down the street and giggling, not caring what people thought about us.
Tumblr media
By now it was almost half past six, nearly time for doors to open. Security took care to make rows and more and more people appeared, making us glad that we had a good spot. Mickey still needed to send me my ticket which he had gotten from Ticketswap.
And then it was time. Thankfully nothing happened, the tickets were valid, no questions about my bag… and Rachel did not even have to lie down on the floor like Charlotte to secure our spot. Again a perfect spot, right where Yannis would be!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The only thing was that this time I was sandwiched between Mickey and the huge Berlin guy (I swear next time I’ll ask his name). But I tried to see the positive sides: with such strong guys next to me it was certain Yannis would come here for What Went Down. If only security had been this strong too… but more of that in time.
Now it was waiting time again. When Mickey went to the bathroom, some drunk guy from the back already wanted to steal his place, claiming he “just had to touch the barrier once to see how it feels”. Like dude… no. Touch it after the concert is over. We met Paula, who brought a bouquet of pink roses to the concert.
We were all very “enthusiastic” about Egyptian Blue who played as bashingly loud and bad as usually. But thank God that was over soon. And then they started to build up the Foals stage! Yannis microphone was set up right in front of my nose, a bit too much in front of me for my taste because I knew it’d be in the way all the time.
Mickey noticed that there appeared to be no screen this time – just a black huge banner that reminded us of something we could not point our finger at. We engaged N as a detective and found out it resembled the pattern on the black LIY vinyl. I prayed that the light would be good enough for photos.
And suddenly, shockingly on time, Foals appeared onstage with the known intro music and Wake Me Up. Yannis was really right in front of me again and had made the effort to change into another shirt (actually one of my faves). I felt like I overdosed with Foals in the last month, because not only was this the third concert but I also spoke to him twice. This all felt too unreal to be true.
Tumblr media
He was in a good vocal shape, but somehow the vibe was different from Berlin and Amsterdam. They seemed to be a bit tired, although they tried to play a good energetic show. I remembered my purpose of a photographer and started testing out my new prism, to the surprise of and displeasure of the security guy in front of me. Well, I know it looks weird, but the results are worth it, man… and if even Foals say the photos are good…
At first the setlist had no surprises, only when they got to Looking High, we all got excited because that was a rare one. They had last played it in the UK, and only four times. Mickey was already sad because he thought they scrapped Life Is Yours, but to his surprise they played it right after.
Tumblr media
I found the crowd to be more drunk but less enthusisastic than in Berlin and I missed Camille and Charlotte for the In Degrees jumping marathon and “Brighton Rock!” yelling. I think they should play Spanish Sahara right after in Degrees so we can all have a rest on the Floor, to be honest.
Yannis was a bit forgetful that day (although not with the Mountain at My Gates chorus, bless). He messed up the beginning of Looking High, and I have heard better performances of Inhaler. However he said “Dankeschön” in a very sweet way even twice, so my heart melted anyway. I will miss him a lot, because that was definitely the last concert of the year. I hope I can memorise how wonderful it is to have a whole concert (or three) to just see all with my own eyes and even speak to him on multiple occasions.
He came down to the crowd for Providence, but I did not catch his hand this time, only his shoulder on the way back (green shirt still leads in terms of softness, but this dotted one is a close second!). During the Encore break I told Mickey that we really need to go and get some food and drink after, because I felt really weak. No surprise in that.
Tumblr media
They came back to play Black Bull and then – What Went Down. Now was the chance. We gave everything and hoped he would come to us. He gave away his guitar, climbed down and got up right to us. I thought this is too good to be true, and truly, it was: he decided not to climb up on the barrier today. I suspect, maybe he was being tired but also security stood there like it was their first day on the job and showed no signs of wanting to help him get up.
I can’t blame him for not doing it, but I was a bit sad still. He briefly went to the spot where Rachel and Lea stood, but then he climbed back up on stage. During Two Steps I already noticed just how exhausted I was. And then, suddenly it was over, and they disappeared.
We had no luck with setlists, drumsticks or plecs and they closed the stage area really quickly. I noticed that the entire right side of my T-Shirt was completely soaked in sweat, and it was not my own. My jacket, meanwhile, was safely waiting for me at home… We briefly said goodbye to our friends and then Mickey and I quickly got out to catch the bus.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Somehow the rest of the evening added to the sense of all of this being completely unreal, like a glimpse of stolen life. I am well aware that many people do things like this on a regular basis and it is no big deal to go to a concert last minute in another city and meet new people and hang out with them.
However, for a home-sitting lonely introvert like me this is really far away from my usual life and still causes me to have some feeling as if everything is just another story I made up in my mind.
At the train station all food shops except one lonely Rewe were closed, so we went to get some shockingly healthy food (“let’s get Papaya with lemon”) and ended up with yoghurt, cereal, apples, wraps, a big bottle of sparkling apple juice (sadly no Sprite, sorry). We somehow forgot how thirsty we were and did not think of buying two bottles, so we shared ours while waiting for the train.
In the train we reviewed the setlist (Mickey was actually the one who created the concert date on setlist.fm) and realised they left out Late Night and Black Gold in favour of new songs. Then we arrived in our “village”. It was dark and I had no idea where we were going. Normally I’d be in panic in this situation, but oddly I felt very safe and incredibly happy in that moment.
We quietly snuck into the flat to not wake the owners downstairs. After eating and washing we talked for a while and it was sad he had to wake up so early next morning to go back, because late night talks are the most interesting. But it was already late, and we had to sleep.
I fell asleep and woke up startled by something when it was already morning. I turned around to find Mickey standing right next to me. I managed to say “oh my god”, and probably scared the hell out of him with my reaction because he asked “Are you ok?”. We had an awkward moment and finally managed to say “…good morning?”.
The goodbye was just as awkward as our greeting less than 24 hours earlier. We first stood a few metres apart and he was not sure about going for a hug or not. He told me to write to him when I was safe at home and suddenly I was all alone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I needed an hour to somehow get myself together enough to function again. I ate up, packed and dressed and left the flat after 7:45 to get a train to the botanical garden.
Tumblr media
I think it is almost a tradition for me to visit the botanical garden in each city after a concert. There is something meditative and soothing about them, I thought, wandering through the Flora next to Köln Zoo.
Tumblr media
Nobody was here yet except for some runners. I had all the time in the world to take as many photos as I wanted and calm down my hopeless brain. Amongst the roses and pink flowers I thought that this would be something Yannis enjoys: first a crazy concert and then the garden.
Tumblr media
Afterwards I headed back to the main station in hope of visiting some museums. But the city center is not a welcoming place early in the morning. Most shops are closed and all the construction sites did not help with navigation.
The museums started scaring me, so I thought, “screw this2 and wanted to go to another park. But first I had a whole odyssey trying to find affordable vegan food (which turned out to be disgusting, sadly). In the park I sat down on a bench near the big pond to eat and write to N. By that time it was really hot already. I managed to get lost with google maps and eventually settled under the shade of a big tree.
Tumblr media
There I found a four leafed clover which I showed to N and to Mickey, who did not know the concept of them as lucky charms. A mail reached me: my green patterned shirt had arrived, and I would be able to pick it up soon.
Tumblr media
Then it was already time to go back to the station and catch the ICE to Hannover. The train was very full, and the air was thick. I originally wanted to write down my adventures but found myself almost sleeping instead. Even worse, we were significantly delayed, and I missed my second ICE  by a minute. That meant I had an odyssey with two Metronom trains until I finally arrived in my home town, exhausted and ready to just eat and sleep.
It has been two days now and I still feel like it was all a fever dream, even as I sit on the sofa and look at the photos I took. Not entirely sure how any of this qualifies as a travel or concert diary still, but it sure as hell is a lot of reading material to remember.

Tumblr media
Alternative rock is somewhat subjective, being the wilder, weirder extension of rock 'n roll traditionalism that exists somewhere between indie rock study and an ever-present punk energy. Its texture and tone may vary from artist to artist, but it’s primarily fueled by the inimitable electricity of the guitar. That brings us to the best albums from that scene in 2022, which does its most to keep that in mind, but also recognizes that alternative rock in its modern state encompasses a spectrum of emotional gravitas and amperage that continue to move its dial forward...
Alvvays - Blue Rev [Polyvinyl Records]
Tumblr media
Blue Rev is the execution in how you make a dream pop in vivid, singular display. The third full-length album from Alvvays establishes what we’ve already known since 2014′s promising, assured guitar-pop display of a self-titled and 2017′s more refined sophomore follow-up, Antisocialites, that when the chemistry between color, texture, sound and emotion hit at just the right angle, it piques the senses inside and out in a way which makes you feel like you’ve tapped into another dimension or gravity.
Bartees Strange - Farm to Table [4AD]
Tumblr media
Bartees Strange arrived on the scene with an anomaly of a debut in 2020′s Live Forever. The D.C.-based songwriter knew he had something to prove but didn’t let any of his underdog status shake his confidence from showing the world why he was a star that showed in the way he built worlds with genre-melding dynamics as an indie rock polymath punctuated by a natural rap and R&B swagger. On his follow-up, Farm to Table, Strange reaps what he sews in a post-fame recollection in an album that seeks out bigger spaces and fills them accordingly: festival stage-sized twilight production, a battle for authenticity, a showcase of vulnerability, and a boundless style he continues to hone as is own.
The Beths - Expert In A Dying Field [Carpark Records]
Tumblr media
The Beths are over standing in the background on Expert In A Dying Field, the sophomore outing from the the New Zealand rockers, and it's a level-up letting the rest of the world know that. Still, vocalist and guitarist Elizabeth Stokely remains ever-the-introspect in her lyricism, compartmentalizing relationships in every definition down to the microscopic degree. Scuzzed out in wholly alive electricity, however, the Beths making self-reflection sound like a fearless excavation of your place in the world when everyone around you is either coming or going.
Camp Cope - Running With the Hurricane [Poison City / Run for Cover Records]
Tumblr media
Since the release of 2018′s breakthrough sophomore outing, How to Socialise & Make Friends, the world has given the Melbourne trio even more kerosene to douse on what once a sound on the brink of being consumed by inner fire. Instead, they’re approaching life’s messiness with a kindness for the self that’s reflective in more room to breathe and a sunset pastel jangle that is still wildly punk and feeding off the emotional, except it all being contained within Camp Cope’s inner storm.
Caracara - New Preoccupations [Memory Music]
Tumblr media
New Preoccupations is a nearly fragile-to-the-touch document of Caracara frontman Will Lindsey's road to sobriety and recovery, with the Philly indie rockers approaching their long-awaited sophomore effort with the kind of unassuming gratitude for life's rougher teaching in clarity that can only be learned upon understanding why those lessons on falling down are set for us in the first place. Sonically, Caracara discover precision in their own sound that compliments these realizations in a clarified turn toward Aughts-era emo-rock that maneuvers through closing corners with enlightenment.
Dehd - Blue Skies [Fat Possum]
Tumblr media
Dehd broke through the noise and malaise of 2020′s worst parts using the most critical elements of post-punk and a seemingly infinite jolt of energy and pop bursts. Their third studio effort Blue Skies embraces a confidence in finding out what’s on that other side in spite of what may be pulling you back, with the Chicago trio taking what they’ve already grown and known in their surf-sided punk sound, and detail it with further depth in the studio with synths and layers of drum machines that revel in higher def colors in their weather alongside refracting their kinetic energy by the multiple across its 33-minute play.
Dry Cleaning - Stumpwork [4AD]
Tumblr media
Stumpwork accentuates the hyper-observational properties of Dry Cleaning’s artful post-punk while bending the sharper angles of its predecessor into a brain stew to compliment the deeper thinks, as the South London band peers even further into the self-referential, focusing on shifting relationships, grief, and – thanks to Florence Shaw’s microscopic eye on the mundane – making the everyday occurrence witnessed a tale of fascination.
Empath - Visitor [Fat Possum Records]
Tumblr media
Visitor is very much a change in chemical reaction for Empath, though, with tracks like its slow-swirl opener “Genius of Love”, the key bedazzled “Diamond Eyelids” or the dreamscaped drifts of “Elvis Comeback Special” pulling back their racing churn to a streak of intimate moments stuck in forever. This moves the blurry patterns of light and noise into a fuller scale sound-and-sensory-linked experience where exhilaration maybe isn’t an instantaneous drip like its predecessor, but rather something where the chemical release hits you over a cast of time.
Enumclaw - Save the Baby [Luminelle Recordings]
Tumblr media
After breaking through obscurity and a hometown burnout scene last year with their hugely promising Jimbo Demo EP, Enumclaw are learning to reconcile where they come from with where they’re going on another impressive collection of saccharine indie rock that harbors the weight of their world with equal sighs of regret and relief. Alongside producer Gabe Wax, they give the crusty pop textures of their early work a proper wash, revealing a depth detail in their melodies syrupy noise and an added ache to vocalist Aramis Johnson’s inner admissions pouring out.
Hellrazor - Heaven's Gate [Self-released]
Tumblr media
Heaven’s Gate, the second album from former Speedy Ortiz guitarist Mike Falcone’s band Hellrazor, isn’t really taking any modern, stream-baiting trends into account, which in turn already sets it as an outlier on the scene’s current landscape. Now joined by bassist (and Jobber frontperson / bandmate) Kate Meizner alongside drummer Michael Henss of HEELE, the dream of ‘90s grunge and noise rock lives on in nightmarish form. You’ll hear gristle of early Nirvana, Hum, and Unwound rattling through the Justin Pizzoferrato polish, though its weird turns make it known Hellrazor are more than just descendants of ancient astronauts.
Horsegirl - Versions of Modern Performance [Matador Records]
Tumblr media
Almost effortlessly, vocalist and guitarist Nora Cheng, guitarist Penelope Lowenstein alongside drummer Gigi Reece surpass all buzzy expectations that come with being a group of young artists with an assured entry point of a first impression that celebrates the joys of music discovery and the darker shades of classic ‘90s indie guitar rock inspo with their own youthfully sonic persuasions. Every generation deserves their own homage to the greats while making a statement of their own, and Versions of Modern Performance is Horsegirl’s own way of doing just that.
Knifeplay - Animal Drowning [Topshelf Records]
Tumblr media
Knifeplay are not outright dream-pop, slocore, or shoegaze, though there are plenty of moments throughout the listen drenched in heavy distortion, an eerie peak into Americana and its murky reveries, nor are they grunge revivalists, even if they pile sludge over something ascendant. The only certain thing is that the Philly five-piece’s debut album, Animal Drowning, has bound light and darkness into their own singular prism of alternative rock in a way that breathes a new life into it, and ponders it all deeply.
Maneka - Dark Matters [Skeletal Lightning]
Tumblr media
Devon McKnight has led the great underground punk band Grass Is Greener, played guitar in the always cantankerously colorful Speedy Ortiz, and as his own solo outlet as Maneka, put a face behind the feedback. Dark Matters, his second full-length, is a special one, though, that witnesses McKnight coming into his own by focalizing the experience of being Black and an artist within spaces still very primarily designed around Caucasian comfort and throwing out the creative rule book in the process to reflect a polymathic ear that seamlessly fuses together every generational facet of indie rock, punk, mercurial hip-hop, and shades of goth in between.
Nilüfer Yanya - PAINLESS [ATO Records]
Tumblr media
Nilüfer Yanya has found a lane of cohesion with PAINLESS, the London-based multi-faceted songwriter’s sophomore effort. This is not to say her debut, Miss Universe, was amiss in that regard, but the fluctuating style guide it presented in experimenting with borders of indie rock, pop and R&B were – while excellently crafted – running adjacent with one another in the same, er, universe. PAINLESS is a parallel world to all that, where lines of conductive arpeggio, hypnotic trip-hop influenced beats, and sweetened soft soul rhythms are texturized through her creative gaze.
oso oso - sore thumb [Triple Crown Records]
Tumblr media
sore thumb, the follow-up to oso oso’s 2019 breakthrough, basking in the glow, was recorded across a month before guitarist Tavish Maloney‘s passing last year, and furthers his spirit in the sound by embracing their inner weirdness more outwardly here in a crucial hang that lets loose a lot of the weight of the world basking on the glow shouldered and reveals the band’s pop-centricities to get lit to in lieu of adulting’s stranger surroundings.
Pictoria Vark - The Parts I Dread [Get Better Records]
Tumblr media
The Iowa City-based songwriter and bass extraordinaire’s full-length debut channels smaller moment against a vastness packed in with descript reflections on adulting, relationships, and moving around personal hells as those memories haunt her many sea changes every step of the way. Funneled through an emo-adjacent alternative rock craft, each track is steady rolling thunder that can either crest in her voice’s calm or crash waves of emotions, making it feel like Pictoria Vark has assigned a melancholy wistfulness to their passing.
Pinkshift - Love Me Forever [Hopeless Records]
Tumblr media
Love Me Forever, Pinkshift’s debut full-length, fulfills all promises and expectations behind their early buzz in aligning them with the likes of greats Paramore, My Chemical Romance and Jimmy Eat World as a band who are going to take over the scene with huge anthems barreling through pop-punk, hardcore, and very emo’d out haunts and devastations, be it the universally romantic, political or the entirely personal, from the life and times experienced by frontperson Ashrita Kumar alongside guitarist Paul Vallejo and drummer Myron Houngbedji.
Pool Kids - Pool Kids [Skeletal Lightning]
Tumblr media
The soaring trajectory of emotive pop rock anthems of the Tallahassee band’s self-titled sophomore effort promises the scene’s next big star power songwriter in frontwoman Christine Goodwyne, who alongside founding member in Caden Clinton on drums, fully realize their depth in word and hook with the addition of guitarist Andrew Anaya and bassist Nicolette Alvarez, creating hushed romanticized reflections that crystallize across electrical lines straying from the path of conventional symmetry, yet still pull you into their undertow.
Soccer Mommy - Sometimes, Forever [Loma Vista Recordings]
Tumblr media
You probably didn’t have an indie rock darling like Soccer Mommy linking up in the studio with Daniel Lopatin of Oneohtrix Point Never (and more recently, some of the most entrancing electronic-pop production these last few years with the Weeknd and Caroline Polachek) on your 2022 bingo card, but it works to Sophie Allison’s benefit on her third full-length, Sometimes, Forever. The growing pains of 2020′s color theory are starting to feel more distance along with her distance gaze of bedroom pop, revealing bolder lines surrounding her think bubbles without losing any of the impressionistic character of her everyday morbidity.
Special Interest - Endure [Rough Trade]
Tumblr media
Unlike the aggressive flashbulbs and industrial rot schisms that were right in the trenches of our turgid political landscape on their 2020 breakthrough, The Passion Of, Special Interest’s follow-up is no less a call to arms from the fringe, but is its own violent neon dance rebellion at that where commandeer and vocalist Alli Logout, guitarist Maria Elena, bassist Nathan Cassiani and electrician Ruth Mascelli build a dark disco around the bold movements of the club kids, gothic freaks, indie sleaze, and punks. It’s a space where many sounds of rage coexist and express themselves in the same, single energy to celebrate whoever it invites while rising against any and all oppressors together.
Sweet Pill - Where the Heart Is [Topshelf Records]
Tumblr media
The Philly indie-punk quintet’s first round presents something that’s much needed in the emotive rock realm, with these 10 tracks showing off both a muscularity gained from its members reps in the hardcore scene, but also a pop fluency thanks to the malleable performance of vocalist Zayna Youssef embedded around its smart, emotive punk with infinite promise. American Football, Paramore and Algernon Cadwallader equally walked their own paths so a band like Sweet Pill could come along and discover where the hidden intersects run.
Wet Leg - Wet Leg [Domino Records]
Tumblr media
Wet Leg ultimately will wear you down whether you like it or not in spite of their very TikTok-able takes by contuining to show up to the party (even if they themselves don't want to be there!) The self-titled debut album from the Isle of Wight duo of Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers is that obligatory buzz record for the young, stoned and buzzed that pulls off messy fun with a post-punk finesse. Add in hyper-self-aware sardonic quips, and it's easy to hear how their cool factor radiates effortlessness.

NITA STRAUSS Officially Joins DEMI LOVATO's Touring Band, Performs On 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'
Tumblr media
Former ALICE COOPER guitarist Nita Strauss has officially joined the touring band of singer Demi Lovato. Nita's new gig was first reported as a rumor on Monday (July 11) on the Metal Sludge web site.
Nita made her live debut with Demi Thursday night (July 14) with a performance of Lovato's new single, "Substance" on ABC's Emmy Award-winning late-night show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!". Video of the appearance can be seen below.
Lovato is about to hit the road in support of her eighth studio album, "Holy Fvck", which will be released on August 19 via Island Records. The LP's first single, "Skin Of My Teeth", was made available last month.
The follow-up to last year's "Dancing With The Devil…The Art Of Starting Over", "Holy Fvck" is reportedly a departure from Lovato's typical pop aesthetic and features a more punk-rock-flavored sound.
Lovato implied that "Holy Fvck" would usher in a new era for her after she posted a photo in January along with the caption, "A funeral for my pop music." She later told Rolling Stone that fans can expect to hear some "heaviness" in her new sound.
"It's a new era reminiscent of my first era," she said. "I'm ever-evolving, ever-changing. I'd like to put the rest of my music behind me and start fresh in this new era for this next album — but I do that every album cycle."
Lovato recently announced a fall tour in support of "Holy Fvck" featuring special guests DEAD SARA and ROYAL & THE SERPENT. The trek will launch September 22 in Wheatland, California and through November 6 in Irving, Texas. Prior to that, Demi will make appearances at the Illinois State Fair on August 13 and Iowa State Fair on August 14. She also has a seven-date South American tour scheduled for late August and early September.
On Monday (July 11), Nita announced that she would sit out Cooper's fall 2022 tour. She has also scrapped the festival dates her solo band had planned for the rest of the year. The 35-year-old said in a statement that her "touring year" was "still VERY full" and revealed that she was "on a flight straight into the next adventure," adding cryptically that she would "be on stage again much sooner than you think."
A couple of Nita's Cooper bandmates commented on her post, with guitarist Ryan Roxie writing: "No words — just notes... and lord knows we harmonized a lot of them over the years... nothing but love and respect." Drummer Glen Sobel added: "You're super pro and prepared no matter what the situation. We're gonna miss you but we're also proud to be associated with Hurricane."
Strauss had been playing with Cooper since 2014 when she replaced Australian musician and former Michael Jackson player Orianthi. She joined Alice in time for a mammoth MÖTLEY CRÜE tour. She was recommended to Cooper by the legendary rocker's former bass player and WINGER frontman Kip Winger.
Last October, Nita shared "Dead Inside", her first new solo music since the release of her debut album, 2018's "Controlled Chaos". The track is her first-ever solo collaboration with a vocalist, David Draiman, frontman of Grammy-nominated rock icons DISTURBED.
Nita released "Controlled Chaos" to mass acclaim from fans and media alike, with Metal Injection calling it "a great debut that — as its creator intended — leaves no doubt", and Guitar World stating "'Controlled Chaos' is a panoramic view of Nita Strauss's many strengths".
As well as performing with Cooper, Nita has also played with R&B star Jermaine Jackson, early MTV darlings FEMME FATALE, video game supergroup CRITICAL HIT and popular tribute band THE IRON MAIDENS.
In April 2020, Nita launched "Rock Guitar Fundamentals" — a three-module online guitar teaching program suitable for learners of all levels. The course is available at www.iwanttoplayguitar.com.
Nita's solo live show is mostly instrumental in nature, combining originals with covers.

Dave Grohl’s collaborations
It’s not news Dave Grohl is one of the most beloved people of the music universe. In addition, he is a very talented musician who sings and plays a lot of instruments. Here we’ve got the recipe to the high amount of collaboration he already had over about three decades of his career.
It is a long list with various artists, from different styles, such as rock(obviously!), pop, hip hop, electronic. The list has names like Puff Daddy (Dave plays drums), Queens of the Stone Age (Dave plays drums and percussion), David Bowie (Dave plays guitar), Tony Iommi and Bryan May, legends of the guitar, from Black Sabbath and Queen (Dave plays drums and sings), The Bangles (backing vocals from Dave), Lemmy Kilmister, legend of Motorhead (Dave plays drums), The Prodigy (Dave also plays drums), Liam Gallagher, Rush, Bruce Springsteen, Slash, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones (legends of Led Zeppelin), Garbage, Nine Inch Nails, Ghost (Dave plays drums in all of these) and so on.
There is another one I haven’t mentioned yet, that is my favorite: I’m talking about one of the greatest living legends of the music, Sir Paul MCCartney! It happened first in December 2012 during a “Nirvana reunion” concert, Paul joined Dave, Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic to perform “Cut Me Some Slack” to raise some funds to help the hurricane Sandy victims. It happened again last year, June, 2022, during the famous Glastonbury festival, in England. It was the first time Foo Fighters performed, since Taylor Hawkings, former drummer, died. They played “Band on the Run”, a classic from the “Wings”, one of Paul's bands and “I Saw Her Standing There” classic from The Beatles that needs no explanation.
Well, let us wait for the next great Dave Grohl’s collaboration!
That 's it! See you soon!

The Rock Resurrection Tour featuring Skillet, Theory Of A Deadman & Saint Asonia
Saint Asonia is a Canadian American rock group consisting of members from previous bands such as Three Days Grace & Staind. The band formed in 2015 after Adam Gontier (lead singer & guitarist) left Three Days Grace a couple years earlier. In May 2015 the band released its first single “Better Place” after teasing it for a while. Saint Asonia was an opener on the main stage at the Rock On The Range festival while they debut their first single among other songs from their previous bands. Fast forward to 2022, Saint Asonia released not one but two EP’s called Introvert & Extrovert. During this particular concert, seeing this band was a first for me. I had no idea who they were until they started playing a couple songs from Three Days Grace, and part of me knew that this singer used to sing for them. I’m excited to see what this band has in store for the future.
Setlist:
“Better Place”
“Above It All”
“The Hunted”

I grew up listening to Theory Of A Deadman due to my parents love for Rock music. Theory Of A Deadman also known as Theory & TOAD debuted in 1999, I was only one when they started playing shows. The band has released 8 albums to date. Since they debuted, they have had 9 of their songs enter the top ten of the US Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. "Bad Girlfriend", "Lowlife", "Rx (Medicate)" and "History of Violence" have all been number #1 on the charts. The band’s music covers a variety of hard topics to talk about such as prescription drug addiction to Domestic violence. TOAD has also had a series of accomplishments with their history, TOAD has done many covers for many different WWE events taken place and were also featured on the WWE Wreckless Intent album. The band had a song alongside Skillet and many other bands on the Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon soundtrack. When the band came closer to closing out their set, one of their fans caught the attention of the singer Tyler Connelly with a giant poster. The band signed the poster that the fan handed them. I can’t wait to catch Theory Of A Deadman when they go back on tour again in the future.

Skillet is a Christian Rock group from Tennessee with the current line up of John Cooper, Kory Cooper, Jen Ledger and Seth Morrison. The band’s name came from the encouragement of John’s pastor. He had encouraged John and other band members to start up a side project after their original bands disbanded. The name is meant to be funny. Since the band was made up from a diverse music background that the pastor felt like their name should be Skillet because he felt they were like “southern cooking, where you just toss a bunch of different things into a big ol' skillet and see what it turns out like.” The band had only been named Skillet for a month before getting an offer from a large Christian Rock record label. The band has released 13 albums to date. I was excited when Skillet finally took the stage. I love the energy that the band has to bring, you can just see the emotion on their faces unlike other artist’s. Before playing the third song of the evening, John attached smoke cannons to his arms and started shooting smoke out in the air. Skillet had Adam Gontier of Saint Asonia join them on stage for their song “Finish Line.” The band played a plethora of songs from their album Comatose to songs from their latest album Dominion.
