NO ONE GETS THIS MOVIE LIKE I DO
cw: i'm talking about a movie w/ a student/teacher relationship
i feel like this lady with an extremely pretentious film, and i dont mean that in a bad way, had to find a way to sell this film for the mainstream when it was never supposed to be palatable to the mainstream. this was supposed to be a cult classic pretentious art film but it had the guy from sherlock and the girl from wednesday so it got all this mainstream attention from people who were never gonna get it!!!
first of all, the age gap. i REALLY thought, by the way ppl were moral hand wringing about this, that there was gonna be like, more substance to their relationship. martin freeman and jenna ortega are both incredible actors who worked incredibly together but even i, a fictional age gap liker, felt uncomfortable so idk why normal got fearing citizens are getting their panties in a twist abt romanticizing unhealthy/illegal power dynamics. the sex "scene" was INCREDIBLY TAME and barely even showed much. i can't believe ppl were writing think pieces abt the age gap when THAT WAS IT??????? WHAT????
OK WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY
from very early on i was struck with the feeling of, this feels like a stage play. it doesn't feel like it's meant to be a movie, its got an extremely small cast, no one talks like a normal person, it's like they're all doing spoken poetry. the sets don't feel real, but purposefully so, like its a set on a stage. IT DOESNT FEEL REAL. but it feels that way on purpose. like it's a dramatic pretentious, poetic retelling of something real. and i think that is why it has so many reviews that it's bad but you dont get it its that way on PURPOSE. and i LOVED that aspect more than anything
there were also just some very very beautiful cinematic shots. i almost wanna make my own gifset even tho its been out for months and i have better things to do bc i feel like no one saw it like i did. they also did this thing where they'd go rly extreme with the focus. the entire background being gaussian blur around a character. 2 character sitting next to eachother swapping focus as the scene needed. it rly made it all feel small and contained.
MORE THAN ANYTHING. I LOVE MORAL AMBIGUITY.
i love it when movies dont tell you who's right. who you're supposed to feel bad for. all the characters (except winnie) kind of suck in one way or another and its up to the viewer to decide how to feel. both mr. miller and cairo feel like both victims and perpetrators at the same time and YOU have to decide who's side you're on!!!! at the end of the day, obviously, OBVIOUSLY, the adult, the teacher in this situation has a responsibility to not let any of this happen, its HIS fault, but i really love that they showed cairo as a person with agency in the situation she was in.
and, looping back to the sex scene, they make it entirely unclear whether anything actually happened between them, or if it was just a fantasy she had!!!! and i love that!!!! you as a watcher have to decide if you believe, her, the narrator!!!! did they kiss? did they have sex? or was it just a student teacher friendship that maybe blurred some lines but nothing physical happened? YOU HAVE TO DECIDE. THE MOVIE IS NOT GIVING YOU AN EASY ANSWER.
(while this is all subjective), from my perspective, the movie makes it clear that he wanted her, EVEN IF its unclear if anything happened. will you condemn him for wanting it. is that bad enough, even if he never acted on it. does he deserve what he's getting, even if he didn't do anything physical, even if he just wanted it?
and how much are you going to judge her??? for her part to play in it? she's 18, and he certainly has the power here, but that doesn't mean she can't be judged for her choices. are you judging her, for pursuing him, for wanting him? for kissing him first, for retaliating when he rejects her? she's not presented as a perfect victim, and she played an active role in what happened. if this was real life, would you defend her wholeheartedly? and once again, do you believe her as the narrator? did they really kiss in the rain outside her parent's mansion? did they have sex on her fancy bed? or was that just a fantasy she made up? THE STORY IS NOT TELLING YOU WHAT TO FEEL. YOU HAVE TO FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE TO THINK ABOUT IT.
at the end of the day, i dont know. and thats what so great i get to sit around and think about it. maybe watch it again, i still have to decide how much was real!!!!!!!!!! and thats wonderful!!!!!! and because it feels like a stage play and the dialogue feels like poetry and the shots feel so artsy its that much harder to decide what scenes were real and what, if any scenes were just a made up fantasy in the narrator's version of the story.
its meant to be ambiguous. its not meant to feel satisfying when he gets in trouble for it all. it's not trying to be a romanticized problematic age gap love story and its not trying to be a satisfying evil man gets what he deserves story. it's something entirely different. its a pretentious morally ambiguous weird uncomfortable art film. and i love it
love when i'm watching a flopped movie and i can just feel. oh i'm aboutt to defend this movie. i can feel it. in a hour and a half i'm gonna have a speech about how everyone else is wrong i can feel it in my bones
