"In Times New Roman…, the 8th studio album from Queens of the Stone Age is raw, brutal & rough around the edges but with a refinement that reveals itself further with each successive listen — and QOTSA founder Joshua Homme's lyrics are as witty and withering than ever.
The results are instantly identifiable; QOTSA’s sonic signature, expanded and embellished with new and unprecedented twists in virtually every song, a live in-a-room recording that showcases a band at the height of their creative powers.
In Times New Roman… is a party for the obscene and the clean, the outcasts and the weirdos, and anyone and everyone in between.
One of the most important bands in recent rock history is B A C K but it’s no exaggeration to call this album a devastating rebirth."

There’s Nothing But Pleasure”.
In a world of immediacy, speed, and the here and now, we seem to have lost the trail of those music groups that caress you, that cradle you, that feel like they accompany our sadness and turn it into something beautiful. What groups like GALAXIE 500, RED HOUSE PAINTERS, LOW, COCTEAU TWINS, MAZZY STAR, or more recently CIGARETTES AFTER SEX, WARAHENEGE and Joni do. That’s why we listen to each new song from BUBBLE TEA AND CIGARETTES like a gift, an opportunity, a narcotic journey to the deepest part of our feelings. That’s how we have experienced each of their five singles that have been released over the past year or so, and now it’s time to really celebrate, because the time has come for Andi and Kat’s first album, “There’s Nothing But Pleasure”.
The song everyone in the UK probably only associates with the British Gas adverts. The Great Escape was one of two albums I listened to on the 24 hour flight to Australia - I would have listened to more, but without something to look at besides the darkened inside of a cabin, I think I would have descended into madness. It seemed like a natural going-on-holiday album, and like most Blur albums, it’s consistently pleasant and harmless, but this track stands head and shoulders above the rest of the album to me - it’s so carefree and positive and to me, it is a perfect holiday track.

We Go On - The Avalanches
Album: The Great Escape
Year: 2020
Track: Single (Post-Release: 2021)
We Will Always Love You was the second album I listened to en route to Australia, because hey! It’s The Avalanches, one of the most notable Australian musical acts outside of Men at Work! It was a great album, and very fun thanks to its eclectic range of guest stars. For example, this track - the track that was most stuck in my head after the flight - features California disco artist Cola Boyy, as well as Mick Jones, guitarist for The Clash. After arriving in Australia, I also managed to come across a limited edition electric blue coloured vinyl release in the clearance section of a JB Hi-Fi - I would have picked it up, but I didn’t believe it would survive the journey home.

Nightclubbing - Iggy Pop
Album: The Idiot
Year: 1977
Track: Album Track
Jet-lagged and not yet adjusted to Australian time zones, I listened to this album whilst doing a 1000-piece jigsaw at 5am when I couldn’t sleep one night. Seeing as I had already listened to the other 1977 album released by Iggy Pop and produced by David Bowie - Lust For Life, I figured I’d complete the set. This track was the standout, but I had heard it before, in the Westworld episode “Genre”. In the episode, Aaron Paul’s character, Caleb, takes the titular genre drug and begins seeing life through the lense of various - get this - film genres. One such film lens features Nightclubbing as a soundtrack, in reference to the film Trainspotting. Like much of Westworld, the genre drug was a fascinating idea that was completely half-arsed and pissed away by the consistently disappointing series.

Strange Overtones - David Byrne & Brian Eno
Album: Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
Year: 2008
Track: Single (Pre-Release: 2008)
I love finding works - albums, singles, compilation contributions, whatever - from popular artists I like, that are a bit lesser known. When it comes to David Byrne, everyone knows Talking Heads, especially ‘77 and Remain In Light, but less people know about this 2008 collaboration with Brian Eno. After finding the album flicking through Spotify (and being drawn in by its simple yet striking cover featuring an isometric red house), I listened to this album whilst isolating with my girlfriend in her basement. We had both tested positive for covid a few days prior, and so she was forced to work via zoom, which in turn meant that I was forced to sit quietly in the corner until she was done! This track was the stand out of the album, and I feel proves my music taste to be based, to anyone out there still unsure.

Perfect Day - Harry Nilsson
Album: Knnillssonn
Year: 1977
Track: B-Side to “Who Done It?” (Release Unsure: 1977)
[BETTER CALL SAUL SEASON SIX SPOILERS AHEAD]
I didn’t watch Breaking Bad as it aired, the unrelenting hype and worship ruined the idea for me. I caught up with the show years later, in 2020, before following by watching through Better Call Saul - the fifth season had just concluded airing. Despite the acclaim, both shows to me were good, not great. Interesting and watchable, but nothing extraordinary. So when I realised that the sixth season had began airing (three episodes in), I figured I’d watch along. I caught up on the episodes I had missed, and after Nacho’s death, I was hooked. Something had finally clicked with me - the pacing was better, the stakes were real, and for once I was actually uncertain and interested to find out as to where the show would go next. The wait between episodes, even when only a week, feels like decades, and I spend the time inbetween so unbelievably excited for the next installment, and when I can finally watch it, it feels like an event - the lights have to be off, everything else has to be quiet, all my focus goes into the show. It’s silly, I know it is, but it’s nice to have something I can enjoy so much. The most recent episode as of writing, “Fun and Games”, began with such a compelling, heartbreaking and haunting sequence: Jimmy and Kim going through their day, pretending like everything that had happened the night before - Howard’s tragic death, everything with Lalo and Mike - had never happened. And it was all set to a cover of this song - this beautiful, unashamedly sweet song.

Suzy - Caravan Palace
Album: Caravan Palace
Year: 2008
Track: Single (Post-Release: 2009)
After an early wake-up and an hour-long bus ride, my girlfriend and I managed to make it to Luna Park, an amusement park she was eager to show me around, and I was eager to be shown around. Before that, however, we had to wait in line to get our wristbands, alongside a million snot-nosed rugrats. Luckily for us, arguably, Luna Park had entertainers at the ready to keep the brats occupied, and deployed what could only be described as a troupe of homosexual slendermen. Dressed in colourful morph suits and clashing waistcoats, the faceless freaks began dancing and waving and soliciting high-fives, all set to this fittingly kooky but undeniably fun electro swing number. As an aside, I think this track would make a great backdrop for a fight scene in a superhero show.

The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song [Extended Version] - The Flaming Lips
Album: At War With The Mystics
Year: 2006
Track: Bonus Track
Back in November, my girlfriend and I went rummaging through a secondhand record and CD shop in Greenwich, and I managed to pick up, for 25p, the special edition of this album, featuring a bonus disk with dozens of bonus tracks, radio sessions and music videos. Unfortunately, this bonus disk was in a DVD-audio format, and I have yet to find anything in my house that will play it… But interestingly (if you're a nerd like myself), the first disk, the CD containing the actual album, features this extended mix of the song in place of the original version, and the extended mix was merely an iTunes-exclusive bonus track. This track recently reentered my thoughts when my girlfriend added it to our picnic playlist. We had put one together as something to do whilst isolating, as going for walks to the park together was one of the few things we could do.
2. Mr Scruff - Trouser Jazz Deluxe 20th Anniversary Edition (2023) AND Ninja Tuna Deluxe Triple LP out today! (29/03/24)
Part II of our ‘Ninja Tales’ series for our ‘Uncovered’ blog explores the creative for two re-releases from Manchester’s own Andy Carthy aka Mr Scruff on Ninja Tune. We speak to Ninja Tune's Head of Production, Sean Preston to get the full story.
Former fine art student at Sheffield University, DJ and Cartoonist, Andy Carthy’s iconic line art cartoon drawings have illustrated gig flyers, record sleeves and merchandise and usually accompany him at gigs as live animated visuals. Mr Scruff's cartoons feature across his body of work are a big part of his identity, instantly recognisable to electronic music fans.
Trouser Jazz, originally released in 2002, celebrated its 20th anniversary with a Deluxe anniversary edition on a double LP with blue/red vinyl to match the cover palette of the original iconic artwork by Mr. Scruff & Airside with an “infinity” peelable trouser sticker on the cover to reveal silver and gold foiled 20th anniversary trousers.
Ninja Tuna, the fourth studio album by Mr Scruff, originally released on CD in 2008 through Carthy's personal Ninja Tune, is the latest Mr Scruff album to get a fancy makeover and is released on 29th March 2024. Now available for the first time on vinyl, the record is presented as a deluxe triple LP housed in a gatefold greyboard sleeve, complete with bonus tracks, pressed on Biovinyl and also with an “infinity” peelable tuna sticker on the cover.
We spoke to Ninja Tune’s Head of Production, Sean Preston to get the story behind the creative.
Sean explains, “These two records first came out decades ago when budget and RRP limited what we could do. Ninja Tuna didn’t even get a vinyl release. The two new versions utilise the same "gecko sticker” design to take a product concept and roll it out across the act's work. When ‘Trouser Jazz’ came up for an anniversary edition, it felt like a really good opportunity to delve into the original artwork, honour it, and bring it to life. It’s a fun, interactive and borderline silly design package, that is apposite to Scruff’s playful and tongue-in-cheek cartoons.”
He continues, “I had become aware of a “gecko” sticker thanks to music product maestros SixtySix Productions, specifically Emily Robbins there. The sticker is in fact more like velcro than a normal sticker adhesive, which is why it’s often called "infinity peel”. In fact, like velcro you prob get a few thousand re-peels of it, so whilst “infinity” is a stretch, it’ll take some debunking in practice.”
Sean continues, “We took the trousers which make up the original front cover’s central feature, and created new 20 year anniversary trousers, foiled in gold with a beautiful silver belt. Then, traditional marketing sensibility troll that I am, I placed the standard blue trousers over the top as a sticker. The trick here is not only covering up the expensive bit to leave as a surprise for buyers, but to create a small deboss into the sleeve where the foil trousers are, and present the record as it originally was, with the old school blue trousers sitting in place, flush against its surroundings. Of course, at home, once those trousers are peeled off, the owner of the record can put them wherever they want. My Trouser Jazz trousers currently sit on my copy of Bob Dylan’s Street Legal.”
With today’s release of Ninja Tuna on vinyl for the first time the new package design was in keeping with Trouser Jazz's concepts.
Sean told us, “Part of the decision to present Trouser Jazz with this peel and reveal gatefold sleeve was made with an eye on future Scruff reissues. This week we release Nina Tuna on vinyl for the first time, and as a 3LP no less! Its cover features a centrally located tuna fish. No free copies to anyone guessing what we’ve done with it! Andy (Mr Scruff) was very up for reinterpreting the original CD artwork, and got to work on new illustrations to exist alongside original illustrations."
"The main tuna dude on the front gets a beautiful new coat (scale even?!) of silver. It really shimmers in the sun. It’s so fun working with artists like Scruff, he’s totally open to ideas and has such vital advice and feedback. I think initially I was steering towards a greyboard to replicate the original CDs, but availability of that type of board wasn’t what it was 15 years ago, and it tends to be difficult to work with when you want to use heavier versions of it that are necessary for a heavy duty gatefold sleeve.”
Sean continues, “It’s a small thing, but I’m dangerously self-satisfied with the inner sleeves. They spell out NINJA TUNA between them, and reveal vinyl discs pressed onto BioVinyl, which is a relatively new thing in the world of vinyl offered by Optimal Media in Germany. There are a few specifics about Biovinyl that make it a better choice for the environment, but the key is using biogenic waste like cooking oil rather than petroleum. It’s something we are trying to encourage more use of, with one eye on truly eco-friendly, carbon neutral vinyl alternatives that are in development.”
Sean Preston is an award winning product designer and artist from London. He is Head of Production at independent record label Ninja Tune, a bastion of ground-breaking music since 1990, working with artists such as Black Country, New Road, Bonobo, Thundercat, Mr Scruff and more. Sean founded Fiction magazine and publisher Open Pen.
We already loved both these records, but Ninja Tuna getting a first release on vinyl is particularly pleasing for us of course. We shall be peeling and un-peeling our copies with glee! We were also extremely chuffed to have got some words from Andy Carthy (Mr Scruff) himself about this project, “I really enjoyed collaborating on the design with Ninja Tune’s Sean Preston. Both albums needed a lot of re-drawing & re-writing hand-written text, so I did the bit that I am good at (potato drawings & writing) & Sean did the professional design bit, which I struggle with beyond basic illustrator fiddling. The daft hype stickers were fun to do as well!”
With Mr Scruff's back catalogue getting this delightful vinyl upgrade, we're hopeful that there’s another one on the way to complete the set.... !!
NINJA TUNA (Vinyl Debut Edition) by Mr Scruff is released on 29th March 2024 on Ninja Tune. Design by Mr Scruff and Sean Preston. Vinyl record FlipFrames by ART VINYL
The Beatles will release “Now and Then” on November 2nd. The full press release can be found below.
Together and apart, The Beatles have always had a talent for the unexpected. And now, 2023 brings one of the most anticipated releases of their long and endlessly eventful history. “Now And Then” is the last Beatles song – written and sung by John Lennon, developed and worked on by Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, and now finally finished by Paul and Ringo over four decades later.
“Now And Then” will be released worldwide at 2pm GMT / 10am EDT / 7am PDT on Thursday, November 2 by Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe. The double A-side single pairs the last Beatles song with the first: the band’s 1962 debut UK single, “Love Me Do,” a truly fitting full-circle counterpart to “Now And Then.” Both songs are mixed in stereo and Dolby AtmosÒ, and the release features original cover art by renowned artist Ed Ruscha. The new music video for “Now And Then” will debut on Friday, November 3. More details including global premiere plans will be announced.
A 12-minute “Now And Then – The Last Beatles Song” documentary film, written and directed by Oliver Murray, will debut on November 1. The film’s global online premiere will be hosted on The Beatles’ YouTube channel at 7:30pm GMT / 3:30pm EDT / 12:30pm PDT. This poignant short film tells the story behind the last Beatles song, with exclusive footage and commentary from Paul, Ringo, George, Sean Ono Lennon and Peter Jackson. The trailer is available to watch now.
On November 10, The Beatles’ 1962-1966 (‘The Red Album’) and 1967-1970 (‘The Blue Album’) collections will be released in 2023 Edition packages by Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe. Since their first incarnations appeared 50 years ago, these albums have introduced successive generations to The Beatles’ music. Now, both collections’ tracklists have been expanded, with all the songs mixed in stereo and Dolby Atmos. New 4CD and 180-gram 6LP vinyl collections pair ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ in slipcased sets. The UK single version of “Love Me Do” now kicks off 1962-1966 (2023 Edition) and “Now And Then” is featured on 1967-1970 (2023 Edition) to complete the career-spanning collections.
The story of “Now And Then” begins in the late 1970s, when John recorded a demo with vocals and piano at his home in New York’s Dakota Building. In 1994, his wife, Yoko Ono Lennon, gave the recording to Paul, George and Ringo, along with John’s demos for “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love,” which were both completed as new Beatles songs and respectively released as singles in 1995 and 1996, as part of The Beatles Anthology project. At the same time, Paul, George and Ringo also recorded new parts and completed a rough mix for “Now And Then” with producer Jeff Lynne. At that point, technological limitations prevented John’s vocals and piano from being separated to achieve the clear, unclouded mix needed to finish the song. “Now And Then” was shelved, with a hope that one day it would be revisited.
Cut to 2021, and the release of “The Beatles: Get Back” docuseries, directed by Peter Jackson, which astonished viewers with its award-winning film and audio restoration. Using WingNut Films’ MAL audio technology, Jackson’s team had de-mixed the film’s mono soundtrack, managing to isolate instruments and vocals, and all the individual voices within The Beatles’ conversations. This achievement opened the way to 2022’s new mix of Revolver, sourced directly from the four-track master tapes. This led on to a question: what could now be done with the “Now And Then” demo? Peter Jackson and his sound team, led by Emile de la Rey, applied the same technique to John’s original home recording, preserving the clarity and integrity of his original vocal performance by separating it from the piano.
In 2022, Paul and Ringo set about completing the song. Besides John’s vocal, “Now And Then” includes electric and acoustic guitar recorded in 1995 by George, Ringo’s new drum part, and bass, guitar and piano from Paul,… https://chorus.fm/news/the-last-beatles-song/
Denmark Psychedelic Doom Titans SONIC MOON Reveal Striking Debut LP
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Artwork by Mirkow Gastow
I knew from the moment I heard the opening track from 'Return Without Any Memory' (2023) that I wanted SONIC MOON to be featured in these pages, for the Aarhus 5-piece are a special band.
The colors are all right for their album cover, as opening track "The Waters" really does conjure those unearthly yellows, blues, and reds. It's a song that meets somewhere at the junction of Soundgarden, Greenleaf, and Mars Red Sky. The drums mark a desert rock pace and the song rolls steady, with jaded roadhouse vocals and dark Pentagramesque riffing.
There's something lonely, but comforting about the songs on the album. These are dark, otherworldly tracks with downtuned grunge tone and warmly bittersweet vocals, gliding calmly along in a vessel of fuzz down the shuddering waters of Styx. I took it all in while the moon was shining bright in my backyard and it was an ultra-cool experience, particularly during "Head Under The River."
Reached for comment, the band had this to say about the new LP:
It took us some years and a few EPs to reach a point where we were satisfied enough with our material to put it on a full-length album. It’s something we looked towards from the very beginning, it just took a while to get there!
Almost every song starts with one of us bringing a riff or a loosely based idea to rehearsal, and from there we work the rest out as a group. So it's a very collaborative process.
The new album was self-recorded at our rehearsal space in February 2022. We recorded everything live, except the vocals. We had very limited time to record, so we actually ended up recording the instrumental parts in a single day.
Sonic Moon's debut album Return Without Any Memory is one of the clear standouts of 2023, a record I'll be revisiting often. Get it Friday, August 4th, through the band and Olde Magick Records (pre-order vinyl here). Stick it on a playlist with Witchcraft, King Buffalo, Dunbarrow, and Magmakammer.
Give ear...
Return Without Any Memory by Sonic Moon
SOME BUZZ
Sonic Moon is the sound of Kevin Starrs meeting Josh Homme on an acid trip in the dark Scandinavian winter. It is heavy guitar-riffs, drowned in fuzz and delay, carried through by a swaying drum- and bass-section, complimented by a raw and melodic vocal. The lyrics consume the remaining light, and touches subjects like nihilism, sorrow and anger.
After spending the better part of two years unfolding their contrasting and riff-based take on psychedelic stoner rock, Sonic Moon release their 7-track self-recorded debut album Return Without Any Memory on August 4th, 2023 on Olde Magick Records.
The first single Give It Time was released on May 12 and premiered by the stoner rock blog the Sleeping Shaman. Additionally, the music video was released on the 666MrDoom’s Youtube channel focusing on doom, stoner and psychedelic rock and metal.
Return Without Any Memory’s dark and heavy groove introduces the band's shared feeling of encapsulated loneliness, anger and frustration, all contained within the refined sound produced by the intensive care, effort and soul that the band fueled the album with.
Return Without Any Memory will be available on vinyl in two editions: ‘Blue Moon’ and ‘Cloudy Splatter’ on Bandcamp. The album is recorded by Sonic Moon, mixed and mastered by Haldor Grunberg at Satanic Audio, and the artwork is designed by Mirkow Gastow.

Shimmering guitar lines and a pared-back arrangement serve as a backdrop to Rayon’s heartfelt confessions of failure and imperfection. Backed by creative genius both musically and lyrically, Rayon’s soulful voice and nuances really give experience to the lyrics and give the listener hope as well as heart. Times of loss and helplessness, when we feel at our lowest. It conveys and expresses those times in our lives that we have all had. That’s why ‘Made of Gold’, the new track and video by Rayon Nelson, is so special. It’s hard to write, much less record, a song that conveys true emotions. Vocal reminiscent of early Elvis Costello, and more jangle than twang” “Rootsy, authentic and heartfelt tunes with great harmonies and just enough of an Americana vibe to draw in those who claim not to dig rock. “A pair of deeply satisfying albums – including Top of the World, released on Schoolkids Records – that sound as though the band never went anywhere” “In their original run in the ’90s, 6 String Drag was regarded as a better-than-average alt-country act with Roots Rock ‘n’ Roll and now Top of the World, they’ve shown that they’re more than that in their second act, and this is mature, heartfelt, and resonant rock & roll that’s also plenty of fun” “A raw, raucous take on alt-Americana, a sound hard to put your finger on but one that wraps comfortably around your ears while it rocks your ass off” Like reconnecting with a long lost friend” “So thrilled to have 6 String Drag back again. “The world’s a better place with 6 String Drag in it” Outside of the four 6 String Drag albums, Kenny Roby has released four critically acclaimed solo LPs – ‘Mercury’s Blues’ (1999), ‘Rather Not Know’ (2003), ‘The Mercy Filter’ (2006), and ‘Memories & Birds’ (2013), in addition to various compilations.

The songs from 1998 were recorded as pro demos and were intended for release as a new EP following ‘High Hat’. Some of the collection are songs originally recorded for Columbia Records in 1996 for a demo deal with this label, but that ultimately never came to fruition. This album represents the first time any versions of this collection and the songs found here are available on vinyl. Previously, these recordings have only been circulated among fans and digitally as low flying CD releases for sale at shows. ‘The Jag Sessions’ album is a collection of unreleased rarities and record quality demos recorded by Byron McCay at Jag Studios in Raleigh, NC between 19. Both releases are available through Schoolkids Records through Redeye Worldwide Distribution. This album features 6 String Drag founding members and frontmen Kenny Roby and Rob Keller, along with new members Dan Davis and Luis Rodriguez. In January 2018, the band reissued a 20th-anniversary reissue of ‘High Hat’ on CD, vinyl and digitally, following up with their fourth full-length studio record ‘Top of The World’ in March 2018. In early 2014, 6 String Drag reformed with the ‘High Hat’ line-up and recorded their 2015 comeback record ‘Roots Rock & Roll’ too much fan excitement and critical acclaim. This album remains an undisputed classic of its era. The band’s second record ‘High Hat’ was produced by Steve Earle and Ray Kennedy and was released in 1997 on Earle’s Warner Brothers imprint label E-Squared Record. After a leaving a mark on this, as well as the Americana / No Depression scene, the Carolinas quartet essentially broke up. In the mid to late ‘90s, Kenny Roby and 6 String Drag stood out as pioneers of the nascent alt-country movement. This will be issued on limited edition 12” red vinyl with just 500 copies to be made available. The sessions really capture the raw energy of the band and that controlled gritty feeling with dirty slide guitars, raspy brass, and a country swagger only found in the purest of traditionalists. But, as of 2014, they are back! With one reissue already under their belt in the form of their album ‘High Hat’, they keep the reenergized momentum going with another upcoming release, this time with unreleased material in the form of ‘The Jag Sessions: Rare & Unreleased 1996-1998’. The band originally formed in 1993 and, essentially, disappeared sometime in the late ’90s. So when I see such a blast from the past as Kenny Roby and 6 String Drag, I get goosebumps. Alt-Country has always been a guilty pleasure of mine, being a guitarist myself.
