The newest member of the Fairfax Museum family, a genuine* Lepus Antilocapra specimen, better known as the American Jackalope.  This skeleton is from a juvenile male, likely around a year to and a year and a half of age, just having grown his first rack of antlers.  The cause of death is unknown, but its easy to assume he ran afoul of a Hodag or Wampus Cat, or any of the Jackalope’s other natural predators.  However he came to be with us, we’re happy to have him.
*in a manner of speaking.

The Creature Awaits #123:
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry.  Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )

The Jackalope
Scientific Name: Lepus antilocapra
Region: Western North America
Size: About 24"-30" (~61cm-76cm) long
Seriously.......?: As a kid who grew up in the Western U.S, my husband asked me to feature the Jackalope for his birthday this year.
The Jackalope is a "fearsome critter" whose name was coined in early 20th century United States folklore.  While their origin is generally credited to hunter-taxidermists Ralph and Doug Herrick, who first grafted a pronghorn's antlers onto a dead jackrabbit in order to boost sales in their ethically dubious trade, the Jackalope's actual source may be much more grounded in history than originally perceived.
The Shope papilloma virus, discovered in the 1930s by U.S. virologist Richard Shopes, causes keratinized tumors, shaped much like horns or antlers, to protrude through the rabbit's skin - often on the head and face.  As featured by the Smithsonian Institute and elsewhere, modern researchers believe this virus may be the reason behind some of the old legends of mysteriously horned, now-deemed mythological creatures, such as the "horned hare" pictured in Joris Hoefnagel's scientific illustration series from 1575, Animalia quadrupedia et reptilia (terra), pictured below.

(Sidenote: Please support faux taxidermy made from synthetic materials so no more little animals need be harmed in this trade. : ) )

The Jackalope was given the pseudo-scientific name of Lepus temperamentalus. However, the specific variant of Jackalope that hails from Douglas, Wyoming, was given its own separate name. The Lepus antilocapra wyomingensis melds together the scientific names of rabbits, antelope, and throws in the location as well!

Cryptotaxonomy Tournament: Results of Round 1
Tumblr media
The two biggest landslides were Homo sapiens cognatus (bigfoot) beating Gigantes (giants) (60.35%, 137 to 90 votes) and Plesiosauria (lake monsters) beating Sauropoda (Mokele-mbembe) (76.84%, 302 to 91 votes).
The two closest matches were Lepus antilocapra (jackalopes) beating Tetrao lepus pseudo-hybridus rarissimus L (skvader) (57.51%, 333 to 246 votes), and Unicornis beating Pegasus (53.6%, 290 to 335 votes).
Had those two close matches tied, I would have advanced the Wolpertinger and the Alicorn respectively.
Round 2 starts today!

The Jackalope actually has not only one, but two pseudo-scientific names. Lepus temperamentalus is what it is commonly known by, but the specific breed from Wyoming is called Lepus antilocapra wyomingensis.
