My newest tattoo has finally fully healed, here is a picture as promised. For those of you who don't know these are Lee, Jordan and Benny from The Axis of Awesome. They are a band who have (as cliche as this may sound) helped me through some of the darkest times of my life. I sincerely hope that one day in the future I'll be able to see them live, but for now I have this as a permanent reminder of these amazing people. Hoping all my lovely followers are well. Stay golden. @fighting-the-dark-within

UCL Festival of Intimacy
In February I applied for the UCL’s Out of Touch: Festival of Intimacy. The Festival wanted to explore different artists’ responses to the pandemic, socially isolating and relationships.
https://www.ucl.ac.uk/culture/whats-on/festival-intimacy
This was the first time I had ever applied for an arts festival or a grant however a print I had created in Printmaking One ‘I need you so much closer’ acted as a springboard for my concept.
https://ramonaocaprintmaking.tumblr.com/post/184297969271/project-10-experimental-relief-prints-during-my
My idea was; An interactive poster campaign incorporating images, audio and video. To interview a range of people asking for their anonymous lockdown messages. These could be a message to a loved one, an environment or themselves. Each message would become a poster which would include a QR code, which when scanned on a smart device would link to an audio or visual content. I envisage audio of people saying their messages, a video from someone’s window, a family photo, BSL video of the message. The concept is based on a linoprint I made in 2019 in response to living in a different part of London to my fiancé (partner of 12 years) due to being unable to afford the cost of living in the city. (We currently live with our families).
I was extremely shocked and surprised to be selected for the festival and receive a grant in ordered to complete the work. As a person who regularly questions my artist voice and ability it was a wonderful feeling to have an outside see value in my ideas. In addition to the series of posters the organiser asked me to adapt one of my images to use for the promotional material for the festival.
Developing the posters
I began by writing a list of people to approach to interview, I was very fortunate that everyone I asked agreed!
I conducted informal interviews with each participant, either on zoom or in person. I recorded some of the conversations or took notes of specific comments that stood out to me. For each individual I selected a phrase to develop into a poster.
Posters and additional content (via QR code)
My poster, I need you so much closer, linked to a zine I had made during lockdown documenting my thoughts throughout one morning.

Lee
The print for Lee is inspired by her tattoos, music taste, personal style and the sport of roller derby that we both play. I used Lee’s words and photos of her home to create a short video about he experience in lockdown.

Naimo
Naimo’s design is a combination of her Somali heritage, the connection with her family, shown through the woven textile inspired boarder, and her Western life. The font style being a classic calligraphy style script. For the online content Naimo explained her views in BSL which I captioned and voiced over for those who don’t understand British Sign Language.

Joyce
Joyce was the only minor I interviewed being only 13 at the time. Her poster is based on her personal style aesthetic and love of 90′s fashion and RnB. The online image is of her in her ‘home school’ environment and includes her reflection on the time spent out of school.

Elli
The design concept for Elli’s poster was based on her love of live music and gig going culture that came to a complete standstill during the pandemic. The photographic portrait is of Elli at work, being a key worker this only place she visited outside of her flat for nearly a year.

Online Content Hosting
Rather than link the posters to various platforms I hosted all the online content on my website. I felt that this was more professional and would also direct viewers to my website should they wish to explore my work further. As the posters were installed in various locations as a pop-up I was only credited in the festival guide, by linking to my website my name would be associated with my work.

I Dunno Just Make It a Cool Font by Benny Davis Review
Benny Davis, along with fellow Axis of Awesome band members Lee Naimo and Jordan Raskopoulos, is fantastic at playing with expectation.  His last solo release, The Human Jukebox - EP, primarily focused more on Davis’ great ear for music with the exception of the track “Different Love” which delved more into social commentary and exploration of genre.  I Dunno Just Make It a Cool Font is closer to his work with The Axis of Awesome, mixing some musical statements while playing with expectation and taking current popular ideas in a new direction.
It would ruin the experience of the tracks here to discuss them individually but overall this is another great release by Davis.  The instrumentation and composition successfully convey what he is satirising without being a direct parody.  This is yet another great comedy release with great pacing and music that is as catchy as the music it’s satirising or adapting.

Web Series Wednesday | Relationsheep
What? Relationsheep
Who? Written and directed by Amberly Cull. Starring: Cull, Lee Naimo and Jonathan MacMillan.
Why Should I Watch? Anyone who has had a relationship knows that it isn't always going to be sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes it's going to suck, a lot. Some people might look into couples counseling and some might rely on their Relationsheep. Which isn't what you think it is, unless you're thinking of a sheep/man hybrid, then well, you are right.
Following serious businessman Steve (MacMillan), and his adult-baby of a girlfriend, Myrtle (Cull), the Australian web series follows their journey of rekindling what once was through the help of a Relationsheep (Naimo). By nature, a Relationsheep's job is to fix relationnships in order for them to get their wings. Why do they need wings you ask? Well I'm not going to tell you, that would defeat the whole purpose of watching now wouldn't it? Created and written by Cull herself, you won't want to deny yourself the puns and silliness that makes this series one baahd-ass series.
Where Can I Watch? The six-part web series is available now! Take a peek via their YouTube channel or start watching below!
