After a long wait, Akshay Kumar’s Laxmii is all set to premiere at 7:30 pm on Disney+Hotstar. The comedy horror film, written and directed by Raghava Lawrence, stars Kiara Advani as the female lead opposite Akshay. Laxmii, earlier titled Laxmmi Bomb, has been in quite a few controversies of late. As the film is hours away from its digital release, we take a look at all the controversies it has been a part of…

Controversy over the film’s title

The most recent controversy was pertaining to the film’s title. On October 29, the film’s title was altered after a legal notice was sent to the makers on behalf of Shri Rajput Karni Sena. As per the notice, the film’s original title, Laxmmi Bomb, was deemed disrespectful to Goddess Laxmi, which hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindu community. The notice demanded a change in the film’s title. Keeping in view the sentiments of viewers, the makers changed the film’s title to Laxmii.

Accused of promoting love jihad

According to the film’s official trailer, Akshay plays a Muslim character in the film named Asif whereas his co-star Kiara portrays a Hindu girl named Priya. Shortly after the trailer dropped online, a legion of netizens accused the film of promoting love jihad. However, the film has not gone through any changes on that front.

Akshay’s views on drug menace in Bollywood and subsequent call for a ban on Laxmii

When Akshay shared his views on drug menace in Bollywood in early October, it left many irked. The superstar, in a video, said that it would be a lie if he said that drugs menace did not exist in Bollywood, but it was not right to blame each and every person of the industry. Angered by his views, many called for a ban on Laxmii.

The exit of Raghava Lawrence

In case you have forgotten, Raghava Lawrence, who has made his Hindi directorial debut with Laxmii, had stepped out of the film after claiming that he felt “disrespected.” Lawrence, in a social media post, said that he didn’t want to reveal the reasons behind his exit but one of them was that the film’s first-look poster was released without his knowledge. Later, however, on Akshay’s insistence, Lawrence returned as the director.

Laxmii was earlier slated to hit the screens on Eid this year. But due to the coronavirus pandemic, the makers opted for a direct-to-digital release.

Ever since the COVID-19 lockdown, all the ‘filmy keedas’ have been eagerly waiting for the release of a Bollywood blockbuster but due to the shutdown of cinema halls, the same could not happen. However, the wait is now over is Akshay Kumar is back with a bang as his horror-comedy ‘Laxmii’ is all set to release on the OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar. Just before the release of the film, the fans went all gaga and started trending hashtag #LaxmiiKalAaRahiHai on the micro-blogging website Twitter. Directed by Raghava Lawrence, Laxmii stars not just Khiladi Kumar but also Kiara Advani in the lead role. It happens to be the official remake of a successful Tamil film, Muni 2: Kanchana.

The makers earlier received a legal notice from the Rajasthan-based outfit, Shri Rajput Karni Sena, claiming that the original name of the film ‘Laxmmi Bomb’ was demeaning towards Goddess Laxmi, adding that the title insulted sentiments.
