St James’s Palace The Princess Royal, President, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Commonwealth Study Conferences, this morning participated in a Global Leadership Seminar via video link.

Her Royal Highness this afternoon opened the First World War Centenary Woods’ “Regiment of Trees”, Langley Vale Wood, Langley Vale Road, Epsom, and was received by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey (Mr Michael More-Molyneux).

The Princess Royal, Patron, Sense, this evening attended a Commonwealth Games Legacy Dinner at Sense TouchBase Pears, 750 Bristol Road, Selly Oak, Birmingham, and was received by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of West Midlands (Mr John Crabtree).

World War One Memorial in the Langley Vale Wood

Langley Vale Wood, just next to Epsom Downs Racecourse, was acquired by the Woodland Trust in 2014. The more than 640-acre site was opened by HRH the Princess Royal in 2015, and has gone on to be one of Surrey’s most admired beauty spots.

The installation of stone soldiers making up a regiment is to represent the army stationed on Epsom Downs during ww1.

A rotten piece of history in Langley Vale Wood

There was a time when 8,000 soldiers were based at Tadworth camp, on the site of Langley Vale Wood, training before being sent out to trenches of the First World War.

They came into Epsom Downs or Tadworth Railway Station and marched into Langley Vale for basic training – grenade throwing, rifle shooting and gas attacks.

Few echoes of this past remain at Langley Vale Wood, except for the Flag Pole in Round Wood, originally one of three. It was used during gas training to show wind direction and to warn local people to keep their windows shut.

Volunteers helped to plant Sainsbury's Community Orchard at Langley Vale

Volunteers from Epsom and the surrounding area got stuck in planting 140 apple, pear, cherry and plum trees and creating a unique community orchard on the rolling, blizzard hit hills of Surrey.

The two-year-old trees, currently just a metre or two high, will eventually mature and produce a rich harvest of fruit for visitors, walkers and locals alike for many years to come.
