Lane Bryant was founded in New York in 1904 as a shop for standard-sized women. When a pregnant customer asked the proprietor, Lena Bryant (the bank officer who opened her account had misspelled her name), to make a "presentable but comfortable" dress for her, it was the first commercially available maternity dress.
When measuring her customers, Bryant realized the need for clothing for those who needed larger sizes than those usually available. So she began to stock them, and the first "plus size" clothing was available. Business boomed. It became a chain, which now has 448 stores in 46 states.
The ad on the left appeared in the NY Times in 1923 and the one on the right in 1925. I like the line, "If you are not slender." Better than "stout" or "plus sized."

Oh and it's even more horrible when the plus size stores don't even carry your size. If I go into Lane Bryant I will find sizes that are all over the place. The store will have size 14, 16, 18 and then will have 24, 26. They never have size 20 or 22. So then I'm stuck again with ordering it online or buying a size 24 and trying to shrink it in the wash.

This is around the time that I started to take pride in the way that I looked. The journey hasn't been as hard for me as most people would have believe. Why? I just did what I could and moved on from there. I didn't look over at someone and try to keep up with them and when I couldn't work out I watched what I ate and stop working out. I made my body plateau on purpose. Just so it could get accustomed to the new weight. It takes longer but I am hoping that it sticks for the long time and plus I wasn't hungry. The Plauteau way of life is just one way to get to a healthier size you.

I had no ideal that so many plus size women hated Torrid and Lane Bryant. I am truly shocked. Apparently they don't like the styles these stores have. Which is interesting to me, cause many of them don't really explain what type of style they want these stores to carry. They just said popular styles. Like I'm supposed to know what the fuck that means. I don't dress according to what is trendy on social media. I don't even know what is trendy. I thought grown ass people would have gotten out of that faze. Sounds like some high school shit.
My only complaint about these stores is their price. They are mad expensive. Some jeans at Lane Bryant will be between $70-$100. That's an absolutely crazy price.

Lane Bryant and torrid have been part of a huge wage theft of employees and I'm so so upset by that because those were some of the few irl stores I could find that sold anything remotely my size.
I cant do online shopping I can't try it on to see how it looks I'm so pissed. Like I know there's a lot of online stores that have bigger sizes and are run by good people that are usually small businesses that I would love to support but they don't work for me. I don't know how they look or what they're made of and it SUCKS!!!
Make more physical stores that carry plus sizes that arnt fucking sleezy like jesues christ fuck the American capitalism
