I really don’t owe my Trump-supporting friends an apology. I’ve been critical of Trump these last several years, and am still exhausted from the experience.
But to be fair, Trump wasn’t that bad…………..other than when:
1. he incited an insurrection against the government,
2. mismanaged a pandemic that killed a million Americans,

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
September 24, 2023
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the nation’s highest-ranking military officer and the principal military advisor to the president, secretary of defense, and national security council. The current chairman, Army General Mark Milley, has served in the military for 44 years, deploying in Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, Panama, Haiti, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Colombia, Somalia, and the Republic of Korea. He holds a degree in political science from Princeton University, a master’s degree in international relations from Columbia University, and a master’s degree from the U.S. Naval War College in national security and strategic studies.
Former president Trump chose Milley for that position, but on Friday night, Trump posted an attack on Milley, calling him “a Woke train wreck” and accusing him of betraying the nation when, days before the 2020 election, he reassured his Chinese counterpart that the U.S. was not going to attack China in the last days of the Trump administration, as Chinese leaders feared.
Trump was reacting to a September 21 piece by Jeffrey Goldberg about Milley in The Atlantic, which portrays Milley as an important check on an erratic, uninformed, and dangerous president while also warning that “[i]n the American system, it is the voters, the courts, and Congress that are meant to serve as checks on a president’s behavior, not the generals.”
Trump posted that Milley “was actually dealing with China to give them a heads up on the thinking of the President of the United States. This was an act so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH! A war between China and the United States could have been the result of this treasonous act. To be continued!!!”
In fact, the calls were hardly rogue incidents. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, another Trump appointee, endorsed Milley’s October call, and Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller, who replaced Esper when Trump fired him just after the election, gave permission for a similar call Milley made in January 2021. At least ten officials from the Central Intelligence Agency and the State Department were on the calls.
Trump is suggesting that in acting within his role and through proper channels, our highest ranking military officer has committed treason and that such treason in the past would have warranted death, with the inherent suggestion that we should return to such a standard. It seems much of the country has become accustomed to Trump’s outbursts, but this threat should not pass without notice, not least because Representative Paul Gosar (R-AZ) echoed it today in his taxpayer-funded newsletter.
In the letter, Gosar refers to Milley as “the homosexual-promoting-BLM-activist Chairman of the military joint chiefs,” a “deviant” who “was coordinating with Nancy Pelosi to hurt President Trump, and treasonously working behind Trump’s back. In a better society,” he wrote, “quislings like the strange sodomy-promoting General Milley would be hung. He had one boss: President Trump, and instead he was secretly meeting with Pelosi and coordinating with her to hurt Trump.”
Trump chose Milley to chair the Joint Chiefs but turned on him when Milley insisted the military was loyal to the Constitution rather than to any man. Milley had been dragged into participating in Trump’s march across Lafayette Square on June 1, 2020, to threaten Black Lives Matter protesters, although Milley peeled off when he recognized what was happening and later said he thought they were going to review National Guard troops.
The day after the debacle, Milley wrote a message to the joint force reminding every member that they swore an oath to the Constitution. “This document is founded on the essential principle that all men and women are born free and equal, and should be treated with respect and dignity. It also gives Americans the right to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly…. As members of the Joint Force—comprised of all races, colors, and creeds—you embody the ideals of our Constitution.”
“We all committed our lives to the idea that is America,” he wrote by hand on the memo. “We will stay true to that oath and the American people.”
Milley’s appearance with Trump as they crossed Lafayette Square drew widespread condemnation from former military leaders, and in the days afterward, Milley spoke to them personally, as well as to congressional leaders, to apologize. Milley also apologized publicly. “I should not have been there,” he said to graduates at National Defense University’s commencement. “My presence in that moment and in that environment created a perception of the military involved in domestic politics.” Milley went on to defend the Black Lives Matter protesters Trump was targeting, and to say that the military must address the systematic racism that has kept people of color from the top ranks.
Milley’s defense of the U.S. military, 43% of whom are people of color, drew not just Trump’s fury, but also that of the right wing. Then–Fox News Channel personality Tucker Carlson made a special effort to undermine the man he said was “not just a pig, he’s stupid!” “The Pentagon is now the Yale faculty lounge, but with cruise missiles. That should concern you,” he told his audience. As Carlson berated the military for being “woke,” his followers began to turn against the military they had previously championed.
Trump has made it clear he intends to weaponize the government against those he perceives to be his enemies, removing those who refuse to do his bidding and replacing them with loyalists. Ominously, according to Goldberg, another area over which Trump and Milley clashed was the military’s tradition of refusing to participate in acts that are clearly immoral or illegal. Trump overrode MIlley’s advice not to intervene in the cases of three men charged with war crimes, later telling his supporters, “I stuck up for three great warriors against the deep state.”
Goldberg points out that in a second Trump administration packed with loyalists, there will be few guardrails, and he notes that Milley has told friends that if Trump is reelected, “[h]e’ll start throwing people in jail, and I’d be on the top of the list.”
But Milley told Goldberg he does not expect Trump to be reelected. “I have confidence in the American people,” he said. “The United States of America is an extraordinarily resilient country, agile and flexible, and the inherent goodness of the American people is there.” Last week, he told ABC’s Martha Raddatz that he is “confident that the United States and the democracy in this country will prevail and the rule of law will prevail…. These institutions are built to be strong, resilient and to adapt to the times, and I'm 100% confident we'll be fine."
Milley’s statement reflects the increasingly powerful reassertion of democratic values over the past several years. In general, the country seems to be moving beyond former president Trump, who remains locked in his ancient grievances and simmering with fear about his legal troubles—Adam Rawnsley and Asawin Suebsaeng of Rolling Stone recently reported he has been asking confidants about what sort of prison might be in his future—and what he has to say seems so formulaic at this point that it usually doesn’t seem worth repeating. Indeed, much of his frantic posting seems calculated to attract headlines with shock value.
But, for all that, Trump is the current frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination. He has suggested that the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation’s senior military advisor, has committed treason and that such a crime is associated with execution, and one of his loyalists in government has echoed him.
And yet, in the face of this attack on one of our key national security institutions, an attack that other nations will certainly notice, Republican leaders remain silent.

Two siblings were thrown from a horse-pulled Amish buggy Monday morning when a tractor-trailer truck crashed into them as they rode through rural Wisconsin, killing one of the occupants as well as the horse.
The buggy itself was demolished in the crash, which occurred after 3 a.m. on Wisconsin Highway 81 in Darlington, according to a media release from the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office.
Lafayette County sheriff's deputies were among the first-responders dispatched to the scene of the crash just east of Burke Road. The Darlington Police Department, Lafayette County medics and the Darlington Fire Department were also all dispatched, according to the release.
Investigators determined that both the buggy and the tractor-trailer truck were headed east on the state highway when the truck's driver, identified by the sheriff's office as Pavel Ivanovich Gritskan, 39, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, crashed into the buggy from behind.
The occupants of the buggy — identified as siblings Samuel King, 30, and Fannie S. King, 19, both of rural Darlington — were ejected, according to the sheriff's office.
Fannie King was pronounced dead at the scene. Samuel King was taken first to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County before being flown to University Hospital in Madison, according to the sheriff's office.
The horse pulling the buggy was also killed.
Gritskan was uninjured.
The sheriff's office and the Wisconsin State Patrol's technical reconstruction unit are investigating the crash.

February 9, 1942: The French ocean liner Normandie, docked beside pier 88 in Manhattan, NYC, catches fire while being converted into the troopship USS Lafayette. A pile of highly flammable kapok life preservers were improperly stored near a working acetylene torch in the ship's grand salon, and a stray spark caused a blaze quickly got out of control. The ship's onboard telephone system had been disabled days prior along with most of the ship's advanced fire suppression system, and the sprinkler system was improperly activated at all of its control stations simultaneously, dropping the water pressure within it to useless levels. It took twelve minutes for the NY Fire Department to respond to the emergency, by which time the fire had been fanned by a strong wind to become an inferno sweeping through the Normandie's upper decks, and 2,000 Navy men and civilians working aboard were streaming out of the ship through a limited number of entry points, preventing firefighters from getting aboard the vessel. When they finally could get aboard, they found their hoses incompatible with the firefighting inlets on the French ship, meaning they could only fight the fire from outside the ship.
For several hours firetrucks on land shot water on the Normandie's starboard landside while fireboats poured water onto the Normandie's seaward port side, but the fireboats poured significantly more water into the giant ship than the trucks did, causing an imbalance of water in the ship's upper decks and a dangerous list to port. The Normandie's designer ‎Vladimir Yourkevitch was in NYC, and when he heard his ship was on fire he rushed to the site and begged to be let aboard so he could open the . "I designed the ship!" he said, "I can find my way through it with my eyes closed! I'll open the sea-cocks [valves], the ship's belly will fill with water, the ship will sink six inches and settle on the bottom, and it will be safe!" The Navy administrators at the conversion site were unmoved. "This is a Navy job," they said brusquely.
By evening the fire had been brought under control, but the ship was listing about thirty degrees to its seaward side. Thinking the Normandie no longer in danger, the Navy and Fire Department abandoned the ship for the night, not realizing only the ship's mooring ropes were keeping it from capsizing. In the night the ropes snapped, and the ship rolled over onto its side, wallowing in the mud at the bottom of the river. There the ship lay for eighteen months, no one sure what to do with the wreck.
In August 1943 it was decided to raise the ship and convert it into an aircraft carrier. The superstructure was cut away and then the hull was pumped free of water, and it slowly emerged from the river and returned to an even keel. But it was found the fire had damaged the hull too severely and the ship's machinery had deteriorated too much for the ship to be of further use. The hulk sat idly until the end of the war, when it was decided to scrap it after both the US Navy and the French Line expressed no interest in salvaging the ship. The remains of the Normandie were scrapped in Newark, New Jersey in 1946.
Photo taken by Harry Warnecke for the New York Daily News. It is unclear if this photo is a real color photo or a digital colorization. I found this photo on a Facebook group dedicated to the Normandie claiming the color photo is real. This photo has been published before only in black-and-white, and Getty Images features the photo in B&W, but Getty's version of the photo is slightly cropped on the right edge compared to the color photo (look closely and you'll see the space between the second funnel and the right edge of the photo is wider in the color image), meaning Getty's version of the photo is not necessarily from the original negatives, but could be an early reproduction. Interestingly, Harry Warnecke actually owned a color film studio and took color press photos of celebrities for the NY Daily News during this time period, so it's indeed possible that this is a genuine color photo. If anyone can provide any information one way or the other, I would be quite grateful.

Rennes
We are briefly in Rennes, capital of the Brittany region, en-route to the small fishing village of Saint-Martin-sur-Oest where we will pick up our boat tomorrow. A tourism website describes Rennes as ‘a well-crafted interface between past and present’ on account of state of the art public buildings co-existing alongside 286 painted timber-framed houses emblematic of its medieval history. It was almost destroyed by fire in 1720 and then it was bombed by our side in WW11.
We would have visited one of those modern buildings, Les Champ Libres, a cultural centre that specialises in the history of Bretagne, but we were too early for it. Promising ourselves that we would return when it opened at 12pm, we never did. The ultra-modern railway station with its wave-like roof lured us in and then the Centre Ville shopping precinct had its hooks in us. In doing that, we saw an edgy social interface to Rennes as well as an architectural one.
Not for the first time judging by the graffiti and damage to shop windows, a demonstration was taking place against Macron’s raising of the retirement age from 62 to 64. Large groups of armed Police were waiting in side streets ready to intervene if the situation required it. The Rennes Cathedral had a notice on its door saying that it was closed due to uncontrollable elements and when we were leaving the Galeries Lafayette department store we were asked to leave by a back exit so that we didn’t find ourselves caught up in it. It was as if the citizens of Rennes had seen the worst of people, whether they supported the cause or not. From what we could see, the protest moved quickly along, leaving nervous people and boarded up windows in its wake, in it for the long haul.
Our choice of a set price lunch at a creperie that looked as old as the cathedral opposite couldn’t have been better. Apart from the spectacular caramel crepe that finished the meal, from my vantage point I could see an engraved section of stone set into the cavernous fireplace beside us. The owner told us that it had been a gravestone (for someone called Jeremy he surmised) and that the inscription was in Latin. How would it come about we wondered for a gravestone to be repurposed in this way, at least 200 years ago.
We finished our sightseeing with a walk to the Jardin du Thabor (a French classical garden) that happened to retrace some of the many false steps we had taken trying to find our elusive hotel yesterday in Avenue Jean Janvier. Then we made use of the hotel’s plunge pool, spa and sauna, relishing being the only occupants.

An elderly sheriff’s deputy in Georgia is accused of raping a woman at her home while he was on duty and in uniform.
Deputy Jerry W. Glover—who has since been fired—was arrested Tuesday for rape, violation of oath of office, and false imprisonment. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Glover is 81, but his former boss Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson told Law&Crime he is actually 80.
The Lafayette Police Department asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on May 11 for help investigating a sheriff’s deputy who allegedly raped a woman, according to a press release from the bureau.
“The investigation revealed that Glover had sex with a woman without her consent while on duty and in uniform,” the press release said.
Glover knew the woman through his duties as a deputy sheriff, Wilson told Law&Crime in a phone interview. The sheriff confirmed that Glover was allegedly on duty and in uniform when he went to her house. Glover was out for 15 or 20 minutes, he said.
Wilson said the woman made the report to local police the same day.
Nashville Fox affiliate WZTV reported that, according to Wilson, Glover allegedly “pulled up to the victim’s home, went inside, forced her to have sex and then went back into service.”
Wilson also reportedly told the outlet that in the 1980s and early 1990s, Glover worked at the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, and before that, he worked for the Atlanta Police Department.
The GBI said they arrested Glover, but Wilson said that while the bureau had secured the warrant, Glover’s sheriff’s office supervisor executed the arrest.
Glover, who had been assigned as a court officer, was put on administrative leave at the start of the investigation, Wilson said. Glover’s division handled duties like serving civil papers, transporting criminals, and doing courthouse security, the sheriff said.
Glover, who has reportedly worked as a court officer for the past seven years, was fired on Friday, according to a press statement from the sheriff’s office. Wilson said he made the decision based on an updated report.
Law&Crime asked the sheriff about how something like this might affect local trust in the office.
“It’s certainly not the morals that we strive to achieve in this agency,” he said. “I’m very disappointed that he has committed an act that reflects on him, and it does reflect on the entire agency, and on that, I am very sorry.”
Glover was booked into the Walker County Jail. He was denied bond in a first appearance hearing on Wednesday morning, the sheriff’s office said. A bond hearing is scheduled to take place June 9 in Walker County Superior Court.
The investigation is ongoing.
From the GBI:
This investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the GBI at 706-624-1424. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), online at https://gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online, or by downloading the See Something, Send Something mobile app.
The GBI described Glover as a resident of Rock Spring, Georgia.

Louisiana Man Pleads Guilty to Burning Down Three Black Churches
A 22-year-old man pleaded guilty on Monday to intentionally setting fires to three predominantly black Baptist churches in Louisiana over a 10-day period last year — crimes that set a rural Cajun community on edge.
The man, Holden Matthews, the son of a local sheriff’s deputy, pleaded guilty to four federal criminal counts, including three counts of intentional damage to religious property, which is a federal hate crime, and one count of using fire to commit a felony, according to a statement issued by the United States Department of Justice. Later on Monday, he pleaded guilty to six state charges, including aggravated arson of a religious building and three hate crime counts.
He will face 10 to 70 years in prison when he is sentenced on the federal charges on May 22. He will be sentenced on the state charges four days later.
During his plea hearing in United States District Court in Lafayette, La., Mr. Matthews said he had targeted these buildings because of their religious character, according to the statement. Mr. Matthews, an aficionado of black metal, a subgenre of heavy metal, said he was copying similar crimes committed in Norway in the 1990s in an attempt to elevate his status among the black metal community, whose most extreme practitioners engaged in church burning, vandalism and killings.
Mr. Matthews was a member of a black metal band called Vodka Vultures. He also admitted to posting photographs and videos of the churches burning on Facebook as a promotional tactic.
Tumblr media
Mr. Matthews set fire to St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre, La., on March 26, Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas on April 2 and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, also in Opelousas, on April 4.
All the fires took place in the middle of the night and did not injure anyone. Mr. Matthews was arrested about two weeks after the first fire.
Though race was not mentioned as a factor in the charges, the three fires destroyed churches that had existed for more than a century and had been the spiritual homes of generations of black families, evoking the long history of racist crimes committed in the Jim Crow South. Since the 1950s, black churches across the South have been targets of arson, bombings and armed assault.
Dustin Charles Talbot, Mr. Matthews’s lawyer, said that Mr. Matthews had the social and mental development of an adolescent, and that his actions were not motivated by the racial makeup of the congregations.
“Holden now fully understands the seriousness and gravity of his actions and is deeply remorseful for what he has done and the pain he has caused the congregations of these churches,” Mr. Talbot said.
In a statement, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People described Mr. Matthews’s actions as “domestic terrorism” and urged Congress to take concrete steps in combating hate crimes against communities of color.
“Churches are incredibly influential in Black culture and serve as a safe space for convening,” the association said. “All Americans deserve to feel safe in their churches, schools and homes.”
David C. Joseph, the United States attorney for Louisiana’s Western District, said in the statement: “Today, the defendant has taken responsibility for the burning and destruction of three of our churches. The freedom to safely congregate and worship in our churches is a fundamental right of all Americans and will be vigorously protected by my office and our law enforcement partners.”

*called himself a very stable genius despite significant evidence to the contrary,
*refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power and kept his promise,
and a whole bunch of other things I can’t remember at the moment.
But other than that. . .
Whoever wrote this deserves credit but I don't know who it is. And don’t forget - took many classified & top secret documents with him when he left the White House, many of which have not been recovered & may have been auctioned to the highest bidder.

Two people are dead, and one is injured after a shooting at a recording studio in Laurel, Maryland, overnight Tuesday. The victims are Laurel's first two homicides of the year, police confirmed.
A shooting was reported at the 600 block of Lafayette Avenue at about 1:30 a.m. Officers found two victims had been shot, according to the Laurel Police Department.
Track House Studios DMV is located in the industrial-like area near train tracks. News4 has reached out to the recording studio for comment.
“Upon arrival, officers actually found that two people had been wounded by gunshots, provided immediate medical attention to them. The fire department came and assisted as well,” Laurel Chief of Police Russell Hamill said. “Sadly, unfortunately, one passed away on scene.”
A second victim was taken to a hospital, where they died from their injuries.
The victims' identities were not immediately released.
A third victim who was shot took themselves to the hospital to receive treatment. That person's condition is currently unknown.
“Early indications are that there were two groups of individuals, there was some sort of argument developed," Laurel Police Deputy Chief Mark Plazinski. "So, I would say that there's not a general threat to the public, other than the fact that there’s folks out there using firearms to resolve their differences, which is not a good thing.”
News4’s Pat Collins reported on a robbery that happened at the same address over 12 years ago.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Four people were in critical condition Thursday night after they were apparently struck by lightning in a park just north of the White House, officials said.Vito Maggiolo, a spokesman for the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, said that around 6:50 p.m., two men and two women were in Lafayette Square, across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, when lightning struck in their “immediate vicinity.”Secret Service agents and United States Park Police officers were nearby and immediately helped render aid, Mr. Maggiolo said. The four were taken to nearby hospitals.“The ability to immediately provide lifesaving care is critical to the outcome,” Mr. Maggiolo said. The four were apparently standing near trees in the seven-acre park when the lightning struck, he said.“Trees of course are not safe places” during storms, he said. After a day of scorching temperatures reaching into the upper 90s, strong storms swept through the Washington area Thursday evening, prompting severe thunderstorm warnings and flash flood watches throughout the region. The odds of being struck by lightning in a given year are less than one in a million, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, and nearly 90 percent of all people struck survive. Since 2006, the agency said, there have been 444 lightning strike deaths in the United States. Nine people have died so far in 2022 in lightning strikes in the country, according to the National Weather Service. Source
