Which EDD games do you suggest for a beginner like me?
I’m planning to watch 2018 final games because EDDs in them and I’m little bit obsessed with the masked bird (sue with mask, to me, is like: time to kill some people)
The Bird Mask is so Powerful!!!
Oh EDD... she's like if Lauren Jackson were more deadly with an even shorter career. If all of Lauren's talent was condensed into half as many seasons, that would be Elena.
In 2008, Elena famously ran away from UConn after 2 days on campus. She was much happier playing close to home at the University of Delaware.
In 2013, Phoenix drafted BG and Chicago drafted EDD. And a year later, they met in the finals. Phoenix was deadly that year. But it's still worth it to watch Elena getting through the playoffs to the finals.
Quarterfinal: Dream vs. Sky Semifinal: Sky vs. Fever game 1, game 2 Final: Mercury vs. Sky
Elena came back from that brutal finals loss with a lot of fire. A few weeks into the 2015 season, everyone already knew she'd be the 2015 MVP. She was killing teams in record-breaking style... like in this game where she drops 45 on Atlanta. But her incredible 2015 season ended in a quarterfinals loss to Indiana.
In 2016, Elena achieves her lifelong dream of joining the US national team. And what better way to celebrate that than an exhibition at her alma mater University of Delaware? And of course, watching Elena win her gold medal is essential.
Back in Chicago, she makes it to the semifinals but loses to LA.
Elena wants a ring and Chicago can't get her one. In 2017, she leaves for Washington DC to play with Coach Thibault, Kristi Toliver, and Emma Meesseman. A whole new team, a whole new flavor, and Elena doing what she does best. They have a dramatic road to the semifinals... but Minnesota sweeps them because Sylvia Fowles is having that kind of year.
round 1: Mystics vs. Wings round 2: Mystics vs. Liberty Semifinals: Mystics vs. Lynx game 1, game 2, game 3
2018... the hunt for a ring continues. Elena is incredible as always in the regular season. But it's all about the playoffs...
round 2: Mystics vs. Sparks Semifinals: Mystics vs. Dream game 1, game 2, game 3, game 4, game 5 Finals: Mystics vs. Storm game 1, game 2, game 3
After that brutal sweep, it's time to put aside her finals woes, put on the USA jersey, and win FIBA world championship gold. Quarterfinal, Semifinal, Final
Now EDD's been swept twice in the finals. Her back is injured. She has a choice to make: play in 2019 and recover later, or recover in 2019 and play later. She knows the Mystics are a championship team. She knows she can get the franchise their first championship. If she waits, the roster will change and the chemistry will be gone. So she plays. She dominates. Her 2018 tormenters Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart are sitting out the season with injuries of their own. EDD keeps her injury status quiet, steps onto the court, and makes an MVP statement.
Top EDD games from the 2019 regular season: Mystics @ Aces Mystics @ Dream Mystics @ Sky Mystics @ Fever Mercury @ Mystics Mystics @ Storm Fever @ Mystics Mystics @ Wings Mystics @ Liberty Sky @ Mystics
2019 Playoffs: Semifinals: Aces vs. Mystics game 1, game 2, game 3, game 4 Finals: Sun vs. Mystics game 1, game 2, game 3, game 4, game 5
Also, I highly recommend this podcast about Elena's journey

My first Young Justice Headcanon post
Author’s Note: I decided to write this up ever since I am very much of a WNBA fan ever since 2014 and now I have returned to the band wagon plus this is when I decided to write this post up on a head canon between Virgil Hawkins and Cassie Sandsmark from Young Justice.
Not one of my best writing though but I did tried my best though here about writing a headcanon on Virgil’s first experience with WNBA (And the NCAA WBB is mentioned in the first point of this post) as well as sharing it with Cassie and how is her first experience with the WNBA.
~Virgil remembers the first time when he watches the WNBA games thanks to his dad Robert Hawkins on how he used to talk about how the women’s basketball can be just as equally fun as watching the men’s basketball additionally at first; Virgil prefers watching the NCAA Women’s College Basketball Matches {One of his favorite NCAA Women’s College Basketball team is South Carolina.} however after watching it on TV for the very first time with his dad; he had changed his mind about his own views on women’s basketball especially the WNBA league.
~At first; his favorite team is the Los Angeles Sparks however after the change of the roster; the coach and how Candace Parker decided to move to [Now the champion team in this year] Chicago Sky team; he decided to root for the Mystics Team despite how there are players who had numerous injuries as EDD is still recovering from the second back surgery and Alyssa Clark who does ‘Alyssa’s Angle’ with the Mystics team this year while recovering from a foot injury she got from an oversea match on the off-season last year, he still roots for the Mystics Team because he thinks they deserve the love from the fans.
~He also support the Dallas Wings because not only the team has new players on the team for example Charli Collier, Awak Kuier and Chelsea Dungee plus second year pro Satou Sabally--he decided to root for them ever since they have a new coach; a new line up and a whole fresh start from last year.
~On the game of Dallas Wings versus L.A Sparks where they are playing at the L.A Convention Centre; when he catches up with it online while taking a study break during an all-nighter *he and Cassie Sandsmark pulled during their freshmen year in the University of Hawaii; he remembers when he watches the game while his Twitter home page is buzzing with so many tweets about the game as they tweet about the game. [*Post about their time in Hawaii and the University of Hawaii throughout the years Head Canon will be coming really soon on both here]
~While they are watching game of the Dallas Wings vs  LA Sparks on Virgil’s laptop when they are on a study break at the University of Hawaii, Virgil couldn’t help but smile when he watch the way Allisha is playing.
~Although Cassie is looking at Virgil with confusion; Virgil explains to Cassie about how the WNBA is so important yet he thinks Women’s Basketball is equally fun as the men’s basketball however Cassie wasn’t so sure at first ever since she mostly watches TV series on Riverdale, Gossip Girl (The older version of GG--not the reboot); The OC series, This is us: Pretty Smart; So little time and Pretty Little Liars.
~After watching the match on Sparks vs Wings on his laptop; the match is actually re-aired on TV when the both of them are enjoying themselves at the student lounge where many of the students can relax there as well as balancing their studies and their free time--Cassie watches it this time with a lot of curiosity and she felt as if Virgil had told her on his own words on how the way Allisha is playing.
~It may take Cassie for a while to warm up to the professional women’s basketball however after watching a match on Phoenix Mercury vs Dallas Wings which is a home game for Mercury Team and another road game for the Wings Team; Cassie actually started to change her mind.
~Cassie told him [Virgil] one of top favorite players have to be Kia Nurse from Phoenix Mercury however she told him she likes Allisha Gray too as well as Satou Sabally, Marina Mabrey and Bella Alarie plus Arike too as well.
~Plus they also like EDD, Tina Charles: Ariel Atkins, Myisha Hines Allen  Jonquel Jones: Candace Parker, Maya Moore and so many great players as well although there are certain players whom they didn’t like. (*I am not going to mention who are their least favorite players here.)
~Also, Virgil and Cassie managed to cheer on for the Chicago which is the team that wins the WNBA Championship this year.
Not one of the best writing I did on Virgil Hawkins and Cassie Sandsmark as a head canon however I did tried my best though plus I got so embarrassed about this writing I did otherwise it would have been a good writing for me though thus it is what it is on this writing.

Aces-Mystics was the best possible advertisement for what the WNBA already is
Tumblr media
Liz Cambage and Elena Delle Donne helped make Mystics-Aces an amazing series.
The WNBA semifinal series was a gift from the basketball gods.
We’re going to remember the Washington Mystics’ 3-1 semifinals series win over the Las Vegas Aces for a long, long time. From the the Game 1 foul controversy to Liz Cambage’s “get in the weight room” trash talk to the coaches’ stylistic chess game until the final ticks, the last week of hoops had it all. And the world was paying attention.
The four-game gauntlet showed not only what the Aces can be, but what the Mystics have become. The series not only brought to light what the WNBA is striving to reach, but what the league’s already grasped.
Mystics-Aces took the momentum of last year’s Seattle Storm vs. Phoenix Mercury five-game thriller in the semifinals — you know, the one where Masked Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi traded buckets from impossible distances — and ran with it. This is how playoff basketball is supposed to look and feel, it was a blast.
As I said on the day it happened, Liz Cambage forcing a trade from the Dallas Wings to the Aces was an incredible thing for the WNBA. Out from a franchise that couldn’t crack the postseason, the league’s 6’8 terror was as entertaining on the court as she was off it. Her emotions fueled every second of the 160-minute battle, and brought interest to even the most casual fans. ESPN handing Cambage the mic after dropping 28 points, and her telling the Mystics to “hit the weight room or get out of the post” ignited a fire throughout the rest of the series. With that one comment, she raised the stakes of the series and made it so much more fun to watch.
Nothing came easy for Washington, either. The Mystics were decidedly the best team in the league, finishing with the best offense in history behind the league’s MVP. But the Aces were their complete antithesis; not only because of their isolation play, but because of their extroverted personalities. And the Mystics stepped up to the plate on both accounts.
When it came to making big shots, LaToya Sanders drained long-twos, Kristi Toliver hit off-balance threes, and of course Delle Donne was her MVP self. But nobody proved more than Emma Meesseman, the big who drained 11 of 17 threes in the series.
To say Meesseman’s play made a few new fans on Tuesday is an understatement.
Messeman is cash flames
— kuz (@kylekuzma) September 25, 2019
FACTS!!! https://t.co/ptURMBJs24
— LeBron James (@KingJames) September 25, 2019
There was something for everyone in this series. Minutes after Washington put the nail in the coffin, Mystics guard Natasha Cloud dropped to the floor to perform some pushups in spite of Cambage’s comments.
In Game 3, Liz Cambage said, "Get in the weight room or get out of the post.” In Game 4 after advancing to the WNBA Finals, the Mystics and Natasha Cloud celebrated with pushups pic.twitter.com/26wKMay5Cd
— SB Nation (@SBNation) September 25, 2019
Mystics-Aces was competitive, dramatic, petty, and left us wanting more. Liz Cambage showed how dominant a focused, happy and engaged playoff version of herself can be. Kelsey Plum proved she’s the point guard of Las Vegas’ future. Delle Donne and Meesseman showcased the new expectations for WNBA forwards across the league. The Mystics best-ever offense proved adaptable to maintain its reputation as relentless and unbreakable.
What more could fans have asked for? (Aside from maybe one more game.)
The good part is that nothing is over yet. Based on her postgame comments, where she said she “hopes [Las Vegas] will have her back,” free agent Liz Cambage will run things back for a Year two with the Aces. Cambage, at the center of a team where Plum, A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young, the last three No. 1 picks in the draft, will have another year of experience to only get better.
And the best part of all is that we not only have something to look forward to in a year’s time, but in a few days. The WNBA Finals tip on Sunday with the No. 2 seed Connecticut Sun playing the Mystics. If you loved Cambage’s comments, you’ll love Courtney Williams’ entire being. If you were impressed by Meesseman’s floor-spacing, gear up for Jonquel Jones.
The Sun are hot, sweeping the Los Angeles Sparks to reach the Finals. The Mystics are boiling after winning an instant classic series. This is going to be everything.
The WNBA playoffs aren’t done giving.

Lithuania ousted from FIBA World Cup by rim shot
Tumblr media
Photo by VCG/VCG via Getty Images
We have that and more in Monday’s basketball newsletter.
Someone finally played France close in the 2019 FIBA World Cup on Saturday, and the game ended in horror and disgrace, with referees actually getting kicked out of the tournament. Seriously.
The French led by two with 15 seconds left. Jonas Valanciunas drew a foul to get two from the line. He hit the first. The second hit rim, and Rudy Gobert jumped to take advantage of FIBA rules allowing players to interfere with the ball in the cylinder ... as long as they don’t touch the rim. Gobert hit the rim and popped the ball out. Nando de Colo hit a jumper at the other end to seal a three-point lead; Lithuania couldn’t get a decent shot off. France moves on to the knockouts, Lithuania is done.
Lithuania’s very animated coach blew up at FIBA and the officials in his press conference ... in English, much to our delight! (Language warning.) He raises a good point: FIBA officials are incessantly reviewing plays, and didn’t review this one. What gives?
There wasn’t much FIBA could do after the fact ... so they booted the officials from the tournament. That doesn’t help anyone. Frankly, it’s a pretty big statement on either just how big the screw-up was or just how expendable international officials are.
Knockouts begin on Tuesday with Argentina vs. Serbia and Spain vs. Poland on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Team USA will play against France or Australia depending on Monday’s results. The other of those two teams will play one of Greece, Brazil, or the Czech Republic.
Win or Go Away
The WNBA playoff bracket is set after a rousing final day on Sunday. And by “bracket” I mean “multi-level eight-team scheme that reseeds after each round and includes multiple levels of byes.”
The No. 8 Phoenix Mercury will play the No. 5 Chicago Sky Wednesday at 8 ET on ESPN2. That game will be followed by the No. 7 Minnesota Lynx visiting the No. 6 Seattle Storm (10 ET, ESPN2). The winners move on to the second round, with the lowest surviving seed playing the No. 3 L.A. Sparks on Sunday (3 ET, ESPN2) and the highest surviving seed playing the No. 4 Las Vegas Aces that same day (5 ET, ESPN2).
The winners of those games will go on to play the No. 1 Washington Mystics and the No. 2 Connecticut Sun in best-of-5 series that begin next Tuesday. The winner of those semis go on to meet in the best-of-5 WNBA Finals, which begin Sept. 29.
We’ll have continuing coverage in the newsletter over the next few weeks, with some help from our friends.

What the WNBA’s biggest brawl of 2019 means for the future of the league
Tumblr media
Brittney Griner’s ominous comments about her place in the W are worrisome. But the league’s suspensions feel fair.
Welcome to The W Is It, a weekly column about all the stuff that freakin’ rules in the WNBA. Have any tips of topics to cover? Find me @mellentuck on Twitter.
Seven-time WNBA All-Star Brittney Griner turned to box out Kristine Anigwe in the fourth quarter of a close game on Aug. 10, in which her Phoenix Mercury led the Dallas Wings by just three points. What should’ve been a mundane basketball play turned into an all-out brawl.
With Griner’s arms out wide, Anigwe latched to her right forearm and yanked it down. Then, Anigwe came over the top with an open arm and whacked Griner on the top of her head, prompting Griner to turn to Anigwe upon impact and swing a quick punch at the Wings big. Anigwe backpedaled nearly the entire length of the court to get out of harm’s way as Griner was restrained by a referee and teammate Leilani Mitchell.
It didn’t end there though, as Wings forward Kayla Thornton tried to hit Griner while she was wrapped in the ref’s arms; instead Griner shoved her with an open palm. Wings guard Kaela Davis and Mercury guard Diana Taurasi raced off the bench to separate their teammates, but were ejected from the game.

The fallout from the biggest brawl in recent WNBA history has massive implications for Griner’s future in the league, her Phoenix Mercury team’s playoff hopes, and how the league handles on-court spats going forward. The league announced five suspensions Tuesday morning: Griner for three games, Anigwe and Thornton for two games, and Taurasi and Davis for one game.
Two days after the incident and one day before suspensions were announced, Griner made an ominous statement about possibility leaving the WNBA if the punishment from the league was too severe.
“How they handle this will determine a lot about the future,” Griner said, according to the Arizona Central. “Because how can I fight for some league that doesn’t even want to protect their players?”
Saturday night was the culmination of Griner’s season-long frustration with Anigwe. Griner says she spoke to referees during the second game she matched up against Anigwe this season to watch for her physicality in the post.
Griner’s actions escalated a scrap between two players into an all-out brawl that ended with six ejections, though. Her three-game suspension feels appropriate.
But she also has a legitimate gripe. Anigwe threw two cheap shots and there wasn’t a single whistle blown until Griner swung at her.
Slowed down and zoomed in so there’s no mistake. Griner boxes Anigwe out, Anigwe goes into Griner’s elbow. Then A holds and pulls at her arm and does a weird karate chop to G’s face. Then it’s off to the races. #WNBA pic.twitter.com/1Z9UCD5STV

The Mercury’s COO, Vince Kozar, quote tweeted this image from the last time Griner played against Wings too.
Just to be clear: this was the LAST time we played that team. Not last night, the time before. https://t.co/OZAFjzvZLS

“I’m not doing it for the money because we don’t make enough and they want to fine me for every little thing,” Griner said. “I’m getting techs for protecting myself in games and flagrants because they always only see me. They never see anything beforehand. I’m basically not getting paid this summer already (due to fines).”
Griner’s exaggerating, as she’s paid close to the league maximum $117,500 salary and has not accumulated anywhere close to that in fines. But she’s in position to make such a threat because she earns a seven-figure salary from Russian team UMMC Ekaterinburg during the winter. Most of the league’s top players earn well below what their market dictates abroad to play in the WNBA.
The league’s tallest player at 6’8, Griner’s consistently believed she’s subject to different officiating than her peers, and that allows smaller players to get away with more than they should. That physical play has persisted since she entered the league in 2013, and she’s clearly fed up.
“Me, Liz [Cambage], and Syl [Fowles] are big,” Griner said after a July 30 game against the Washington Mystics, referencing the league’s two other elite centers. “I get it. But it doesn’t take away that if I go to shoot and they raise up my arm and slap my hand, that’s still a freakin’ foul. It doesn’t matter if [Mystics guard] Kristi Toliver is hitting me, it’s a foul. It still alters your shot. It doesn’t matter how big you are.”
(The morning after a July 23 game against the Storm, Cambage showed me the bruises she suffered from her wrist down her forearm the night before. She took just two trips to the free-throw line.)
This incident is bigger than just Griner and how centers are officiated, too. The league’s suspension rollout establishes precedent for similar actions in the future. The league’s collective bargaining agreement expires after this season ends on Oct. 31.
The W hadn’t seen an altercation on the scale of Griner vs. Anigwe since the Detroit Shock and LA Sparks in 2008, when 11 players were suspended after Plenette Pierson and Candace Parker fought. Those suspensions ranged from one to four games, with Pierson getting flagged the most for inciting the incident. Parker got just one for throwing a punch.
In a press release, the league explained Griner’s three-game punishment was for “throwing punches, escalating the incident, and pushing Thornton’s face with an open hand.” Anigwe’s two-game suspension was for “instigating the initial altercation and taking an open-handed swing at Griner, and Thornton’s two were for “escalating the altercation.” Taurasi and Davis were suspended one game for leaving the bench, which is a league rule.
“Today I went on the court to make sure my teammate didn’t get jumped,” Taurasi said after the game, according to the Arizona Republic. “(Griner) got punched in the face and then someone ran on her back and threw punches at her face. I would do that 100 times out of 100 times.”

Regardless, the impending suspensions are bad news all around. The league will miss one of its stars in Griner for an important stretch of a season that’s already lackIng starpower. Storm legend Sue Bird has missed the entire season to a knee injury, Breanna Stewart will miss the entire season to a torn Achilles suffered playing in the EuroLeague championship for Dynamo Kursk, Maya Moore took the season off, and Taurasi has played just one game due to a back injury. Taurasi is expected to return this season, but her one-game suspension will set that back even further.
Without Griner for some period of time, there’s no guarantee the Mercury (11-12) even make the postseason. The Indiana Fever (9-16) trail Phoenix by three games in a 34-game season. Stranger things have happened.
And now for some fun stuff.
CP3 is back!
Candace Parker’s back to throwing no-look dimes. The Sparks are dangerous with her healthy again.

Breanna Stewart is back jogging on a treadmill!
Just four months after tearing her Achilles, Stewart is back in motion. Hopefully she’ll be a full-go by next season.
