A recent report by Oxfam India showed the rich accumulating a greater share of wealth in recent years, while economists like Jean Dreze have found the rest to have seen no growth in their real wages (adjusting for inflation); and the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy has been constantly reporting increased levels of unemployment. The rich are still able to afford to vote based on issues of identity whipped up by the BJP, while the poor – forced to choose between issues of identity and welfare – are choosing the latter. This is why the ire of the rich has turned towards welfare politics.

Saving our sarva janaangada shaantiya thoTa
sarva janaangada shaantiya toTa
rasikara kangaLa seLeyuva noTa
hindu kraistha mussalmaana
paarasika jainar udyana
(A tranquil garden belonging to all communities
Forever enticing the epicurean's eyes
Hindu, Christian, Muslim
Parsi, and Jain- a park where truly everyone prospers)
"With our heads held high and Shoulders straight, lets us all stand up and sing the state anthem" the comperer would announce and all of us, on cue, would stand in our school assembly, reciting these very same lines threaded together by the Raashtrakavi, in the same tune, with the same intonation, every Saturday, for years on end without ever bothering about what they meant.
It never really occurred to us to ask the meaning of these complex words because we never felt the need to do so. We knew what the naadageethe signified and what values it stood for. We knew what legacy the Rashtrakavi was entreating upon us to cherish and carry forward and we knew that we didn’t have to know the meaning of these lines to be able to understand and imbibe in ourselves the principles that we wanted our state to reflect.
But today... today we are standing at another time, called upon to gather at another assembly under the school of our state's destiny- and now it is more important than ever for us to once again recite these lines, renew our vows and ask ourselves- What does Karnataka mean to us? What were the ideals that we were guided by when we all chose to unite under the colours of red and yellow, where have we reached and What plans, thoughts and ideas do we have for the future of our beloved Karunaadu?
Growing up as tiny tots running around and chasing butterfly dreams in this garden of secularity, the one thought that all our minds were imbued and indoctrinated with was – Indina Makkale Naalina Prajegalu. Today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens. We would be told, in classrooms and lecture halls and seminars by teachers, leaders and elders that the destiny of our state was a gift that would be bequeathed to us at the opportune time.
And that time has now arrived. Tomorrow, for the very first time in our lives, we will be called upon to decide for ourselves what Karnataka we wish to live grow and prosper in. A weighted responsibility no doubt. And tomorrow, when we once again, filter into long queues and assemble outside government schools to exercise our franchise and decide the destiny of our state, we should take a moment and ponder upon whether the Karnataka that has been thrust upon us, a Karnataka which has been cast under the shadow of communalism, which sits and shivers under the Damocles sword of corruption and which fears the erasure of it’s language culture and community, is truly the same Karnataka singing about whose glory our hearts would swell in pride.
We were taught to embrace everyone with open arms, and today we are being made to turn against our own sisters and brothers. We were told to be honest, upright and law-abiding citizens, but today we are being made to hang our heads in shame to offer under the table commissions. We grew up being nourished by the milk of the matronly Nandini and today she faces the threat of our infidelity.
Along with all these changes, there has also been another monumental change. Nenneya makkaLu have today become naadina prajegaLu. The Karnataka of today may be a vastly different place than the Karnataka of our childhood but now we have been entrusted with the responsibility of and vested with the power to develop, design and reimagine this garden of ours. It is now in our hands to decide which seeds to sow and which weeds to plough.

"Yes, both (BJP and the Congress) have tried reaching out to us,” confirms JD(s) party senior official
After the majority of exit polls predicted a hung assembly in Karnataka, HD Kumaraswamy's Janata Dal Secular on Thursday stated that they have started feeling signs of need from the Congress and Bhartiya Janta Party. Even though Mr Kumaraswamy is in Singapore, the senior official of the party had cleared that the decision has been taken for whom we should partner.
senior JD(S) leader Tanveer Ahmed during an exclusive interview with a leading news channel said, "The decision is done. It's taken. We will announce it to the public when it is the right time to."
On the other front, the Bhartiya Janta Party has cleared that it has not reached JD(S) and continued to exude confidence about a clear mandate.
BJP's Shobha Karandlaje was also a part of the interview during which she said, "no question of coalition at all, the BJP has not contacted the JD(S)".
"We are sure to get 120 seats. After gathering information on ground from our karyakartas yesterday, we have arrived at a number -- 120," she added.
When questioned about BJP denying the fact, JD(S) stated that the party has indeed reached out for forming a joint government.
"Yes, both (BJP and the Congress) have tried reaching out to us... The JD(S) is in such a position today that parties would like to reach out to us," said Tanveer Ahmed.
"The people of Karnataka wants us to keep check on both national parties for the betterment of the state. And I don't think there's any reason why a regional party wouldn't want to work for the development of Karnataka," he added.
when asked about their choice of party to partner with, Tanveer said, "The people who are going to work for the betterment of Karnataka and Kannadigas".
Answering a question about the number of seats the party has won, Tanveer said, "Nobody can form a government without us. That's a good number, I think. We could not match the resources of the national parties in terms of money, might, muscle. We were a weak party. But we know we performed enough to be a part of the government".
The JD(S) chief is in Singapore undergoing treatment for his bad health. he took the reign of the party after party patriarch HD Deve Gowda.

Pre-poll surveys, exit polls, and analyses of election results emerging from Karnataka have all made it apparent that the highest preference for the right-leaning BJP – which, at least symbolically, frowns upon freebies – was shown by the wealthiest and most educated segment. Preference for the left-leaning Congress and JD(S) – which campaigned on the plank of welfare schemes – increase as we proceed to the poorer and less educated segments. Three of the four districts in Karnataka where the BJP managed to win a majority of the Assembly seats are Bengaluru Urban (16/28), Dakshina Kannada (6/8), and Udupi (5/5), districts that constantly top the Human Development Index and per-capita income rankings in the state, statistics that indicate a higher concentration of the rich. Everywhere else, the Congress and the JD-S won a majority of the seats. This dissonance in the voting pattern can be attributed, at least in part, to the increasing inequality between the rich and the rest, in Karnataka and across India.

Prakash Raj casts vote for Karnataka assembly election, says ‘We’ve to vote against communal politics’
Actor Prakash Raj said people of Karnataka need to ensure that the state is "beautiful" and hence must cast their votes accordingly.
Tumblr media
Actor Prakash Raj on Wednesday cast his vote for the Karnataka assembly election and said it is time to vote against “communal politics” in the state. The actor cast his vote early in the morning in Bengaluru.
Polling for the Karnataka Assembly elections is underway, while the counting of votes will be on Saturday. The state has a total of 5.3 crore (5,30,85,566) voters who will cast their votes at 58,545 polling stations.
In an interview to ANI, Prakash Raj said people of Karnataka need to ensure that the state is “beautiful” and hence must cast their votes accordingly.
“We’ve to vote against communal politics. This is a place where you have the right to decide. Because in elections, in politics, it is the ruling party that is accountable. You know when, what you have to do, what you have suffered and what you have done. We need Karnataka to be beautiful,” he was quoted as saying.
The BJP is in a fierce electoral battle with the Congress to retain power in the state where Janata Dal (Secular) is also in the fray. On the work front, Prakash Raj has had a packed year featuring in films like Varisu, Samantha Prabhu starrer Shaakuntalam and the recently released Mani Ratnam epic Ponniyin Selvan: II, in which he played Sundara Chola.
