Strays (dir. Josh Greenbaum).
I never knew we needed a raunchy, R-rated version of Homeward Bound, but here we are. Starring Will Forte as a true dirtbag of a dog owner and the voices of Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, Isla Fisher, and Randall Park as a pack of less than loved street dogs, the canine journey of bonding and filthy jokes about dicks, masturbating, and various other pet-related humour all makes for an enjoyable ninety-minute watch.
Produced by Lord and Miller, the animal comedy packs in the laughs without wasting much time or energy on unneeded elements and even manages to make fun of the well-loved but simplistic dog movie genre.

'Strays' (2023) film
Tumblr media
-watched 2/17/2024- 2 [3/4] stars- on Amazon Prime
These were some dirty, vulgar talking dogs but I found some of what they said hilarious, but if you don't care for bad launguage you best skip this dog movie. (Definitely Not for Kids!)

Stuff I’m Looking Forward to in August
We are now deep into the Summer. No holidays this month, but here is what’s on my radar:
Movies:
Dreamin' Wild
This musical biopic is about brothers recording an album in the 70s and then the album finally gets discovered thirty years later. There’s a lot of musicians who have had similar experiences (Death comes to mind) but this is based on Donnie Emerson and his family. Opens 8/4.
Strays
Alright, I admit a bunch of celebrities voicing dogs didn’t have me at first, but I’m looking forward to it because it’s directed by Josh Greenbaum, director of one of my favorite documentaries of the last decade Too Funny to Fail and the trailer got me laughing. Opening 8/18.
You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah
Adam Sandler has been on a roll lately and in his newest starring / producing vehicle, his actual wife and daughters co-star in this bat mitzvah comedy. Netflix premiere on 8/25.
Music:
Neil Young Chrome Dreams
Recorded from 1974 to 1977, this Neil Young album was never released. In 2007, he released the sequel to the widely bootlegged album. Excited to see it’s official release on 8/11 (review coming soon).
Aerosmith Greatest Hits
In 1980, Aerosmith released their Greatest Hits album filled with 10 hits from the 70s. It is one of their biggest selling releases (12 times platinum). It was re-issued in 1997 with more tracks. There have been other compilations since then, but this new deluxe edition of 44 tracks is coinciding with their upcoming farewell tour. Album drops 8/18 (review coming soon).
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros Live at Acton Hall
Recorded on Nov. 15, 2002, this benefit concert was one of the final live appearances of Joe Strummer before his death on Dec. 22, 2002. Especially noteworthy about this concert is that Strummer was joined onstage for some songs by his old Clash bandmate Mick Jones. In 2012, there was a Record Store Day release of this, but this marks the first official release on vinyl and CD and remastered. Album drops 8/18 (review coming soon).
Alice Cooper Road
Call this my Summer of Alice Cooper: in June I got to review his super group Hollywood Vampires’ live album, then I got to cover the re-releases of School’s Out and Killer, and just last week I saw Hollywood Vampires live in Boston. Now the King of Shock Rock is back with his 22nd solo album, dropping 8/23 (review coming soon).
TV:
Ahsoka
Rosario Dawson stole some scenes as Ahsoka Tano on The Mandalorian. Now the character is getting her own limited series taking place post-Episode 6 around the time of Mandalorian. Disney + premiere on 8/23
Conventions:
FAN EXPO Boston
The annual Boston comic con hits the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Good news is that even with the WGA and SAG strikes, celebrities can attend and sign and even do some panels (as long as it’s not about struck work). This year’s guests include Henry Winkler, William Shatner, Hayden Christiensen, Jason Lee, Peter Weller, Robin Wright and more. The fun happens from 8/4 to 8/6.

How did this get made?
Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar (2021) by Josh Greenbaum I recently subscribed to another streaming service (no Netflix for the next half year…), and when I saw that this movie was on it, I immediately put it on my watchlist, ’cause I heard it was hilarious. Now, how to say this… I’ve got my issues with a lot of comedies, whether that’s about my sense of humor or that those comedies aren’t…

Strays    [trailer]
An abandoned dog teams up with other strays to get revenge on his former owner.
Of course the jokes are all over the place. But I laughed more than once how matter-of-factly the dogs talked about all kinds of "outrageous" topics.

Strays.
D: Josh Greenbaum (1993).
When John Waters ended “Pink Flamingos” with Divine eating real-life dogshit, it was to prove that the actor was “the filthiest person in the world.” When characters in Strays do it, it’s because that’s what dogs sometimes do. That’s the beauty of Strays, a profane, scatological and hilarious film that parodies inspiring dog movies like The Incredible Journey and A Dog’s Purpose by showing off dogs in all their balls-licking, butt-sniffing, couch-humping glory. It’s like a Farrelly Brothers version of The Secret Life of Pets.
Greenbaum deploys a “Babe” style animal animation to tell the story of Reggie a Border Terrier (voiced by Will Ferrel) who is absolutely devoted to his master Doug (Will Forte bravely earning the enmity of dog-lovers everywhere) a pot-smoking, onanistic, mean-spirited misanthrope who despises him and has taken to playing what Reggie calls “Fetch and F--k” (“He drops me off really far away, throws the ball and drives home without me. When I bring the ball back he says ‘F—k!’ and that’s how I know I won.”). When Reggie finally gets lost for real he befriends Bug (v. Jamie Foxx) a tiny Boston Terrier who compensates for his size with a big mouth and colorful vocabulary (“Bite me you raggedy m—herf—kers. I dare you. You know how many diseases is up in me? Rabies, scabies whatever disease you can get from tongue-f—king a dead squirrel. Which I did last night because I’m crazy, man”.)  Bug teaches Reggie the ropes of street life like which trash cans are the best to eat out of, which couches are the most sexually alluring. And along with Maggie, a neglected Australian Shepherd (Isla Fisher who, in the not-so-great tradition of bro-comedy, isn’t given enough to do) and Hunter (Randall Park doing a Bill Hader impression) a disgraced Great Dane police dog, he gets Reggie to realize how Doug has been abusing him, leading to a mission of revenge (“I’m going to bite his d—k off”) that turns into a road trip movie involving, a vicious eagle, a pound jailbreak that weaponizes dog poop, a disturbing interlude involving wild mushrooms and bunnies, and of course the start of a beautiful friendship. For all its obsession with scatology and the majestic obscenity of Dan Perrault’s screenplay (believe me I’ve just scratched the surface) the movie still conveys the life lessons and inspiration of the dog movies it skewers. Just don’t ask about the bunnies.

Strays (15): The teenage scatological humour gets tiresome.
#onemannsmovies #filmreview of "Strays". #Strays. A funny concept that just gets tiresome even over 93 minutes. 2.5/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Strays” (2023). I seldom find trailers for comedy films very funny. But the trailer for “Strays” did tickle my funny-bone. Unfortunately, that good-will, and a few good gags, was not enough to offset my issues with this one. Bob the Movie Man Rating: Plot Summary: Reggie (voiced by Will Ferrell) lives with his owner Doug (Will Forte). Reggie thinks the world of…

Strays. Movie Review.
Oh boy. The full movie that was preceded by the worst trailer of the past several years has finally shuffled its way into the theatrical marketplace. Don’t get this viewer wrong. You have to go into everything with some level of open mind. That said it’s hard not to look at the red band trailer for Strays featuring Will Ferrell as a foul-mouthed talking dog in a distinctly adult comedy swearing,…
