Ever since Game of Thrones came to an end back in 2019, I've been itching for some expansive medieval political intrigue. FX's adaptation of Shōgun, James Clavell's 1975 novel, provides exactly what I've been craving. It widens its view of the original story, which follows a fictionalized version of the adventures of the first Englishman to reach Japan, to put a greater emphasis on the dangerous political world that man finds himself trapped in. This new adaptation of Shōgun is all about the machinations of feudal lords, their vassals and retainers, and their spies and confidants, as Japan careens toward civil war in 1600.
The wider scope that creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks give the story makes room for a wide array of characters, all of whom are trying to square the requirements of loyalty and duty with their own searches for power or even just survival. That almost makes Shōgun a political thriller, and every scene carries the undercurrent that, despite the polite strictures of the society they find themselves in, everyone is fighting a death that's inexorably sweeping toward them.
At the center of the story is Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada, John Wick: Chapter 4), who is trying to navigate the dangerous politics of a degrading peace. A year after the death of the Taikō, the leader of a unified Japan, Toranaga sits on a council of five regents who share power until the rightful heir comes of age. His main rival on the council, Ishida (Takehiro Hira, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), is already maneuvering against him when things pick up, aligning the other regents to vote to impeach Toranaga, which will mean his death.
Into that situation comes John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a Protestant English navigator on a Dutch ship hoping to discover a route to Japan. Up to this point, only the Portuguese and their Catholic church have known the nation's location and thus dominate trade. When Blackthorne's ship is blown ashore, he's taken prisoner with his men, but his hope is to disrupt the Portuguese and establish diplomatic connections of his own as part of a larger battle between the European nations. Where the novel sticks mostly with Blackthrone's viewpoint as he experiences and learns about Japanese culture amidst the rising political tensions, the series shows just how much he's another piece in Toranaga's grander game.
Linking Toranaga and Blackthorne is Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, F9: The Fast Saga), a Christian convert who speaks Portuguese and serves as interpreter for Blackthorne. Mariko is also torn between loyalties, stuck spending time with Blackthorne, who is considered a barbarian, and bound by competing duties to Toranaga, her religion, and her family line.
Sanada stalwartly anchors the drama, and his ability to keep everything behind his eyes leaves the audience guessing at the mystery of Toranaga's plans as much as the characters. Jarvis plays foil to the more subdued characters, particularly Sawai's Mariko, and his emotional swings bring an intensity to goings-on that often have the feel of a current carrying everyone out to sea. But it's Sawai who provides Shōgun's empathetic heart more often than not, especially in scenes when her duty and her place in patriarchal society force her to sit stony against the abuse--mostly verbal but sometimes physical--of others. When she turns that purposely emotionless gaze against other people at a few key moments, it has a devastating effect.
Shōgun also features a large cast of great supporting characters, as well. Tadanobu Asano (Mortal Kombat) is the most fun to watch as Yabushige, Toranaga's scheming vassal who is by turns sadistic, boisterous, courageous, and sometimes a bit incompetent. He often brings a much-needed frankness to the other, stodgier characters. It's worth noting also that most of Shōgun is subtitled; the Japanese characters speak Japanese to one another, and English only comes up among the foreigners and when Mariko speaks to Blackthorne.
There's a lot less mustache-twirling or open plotting than you might expect here, though, often because so much of the intrigue is bound up in the honor code of the samurai culture in which the show takes place. But in similar fashion to Game of Thrones, you'll likely spend a lot of time internalizing how everyone is related, who they're bound to, and what their goals are. If there's a drawback, it's that much of Shōgun is subdued conversations between characters sitting in quiet rooms. Across the first eight episodes FX provided for this review (with 10 in total), there are a few flashes of action as war draws near, but they tend to be quick and explosive. This isn't a series that's going from battle to battle, but instead builds a consistent tension that the very world puts the characters in danger--not necessarily because of unseen schemes, but because of the rules hemming them all in.
It also just often looks great. Japan is presented with a foggy beauty running through the show's cinematography and presentation, and there's a persistent desaturated understatement to the images. Like everything else, it amplifies the ever-present feeling of death just out of view.
Shōgun provides the same thrill as some of the best moments of Game of Thrones, when the careful plots of powerful people collide in unforeseen ways. It's a gripping story of intrigue, thanks to an excellent cast and stakes the show is always finding new ways to raise.

write a letter to your inner child + i'll tell you what flower you've blossomed into

A poppy, for remembrance
"Through the dancing poppies stole a breeze most softly lulling to my soul." — john keats, endymion (1818), book I, line 565. — you seem to mourn your past,as your inner child has died. You've been through your battles yet still have an immense amount of hope for the future.A yearning for peace of mind is what you have when you try to look for the sparks you've once felt in your life. But remember, you will no longer have to fight or defend yourself after you grow in a field where the vibrance of your petals are commemorated.

What does your Muse’s Name Mean?
Tumblr media
Alexandra
Gender: Feminine
Usage: English, German, Dutch, French, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic, Greek, Portuguese, Romanian, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Catalan, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Ukrainian, Ancient Greek, Greek Mythology
Feminine form of Alexander. In Greek mythology this was a Mycenaean epithet of the goddess Hera, and an alternate name of Cassandra. It was borne by several early Christian saints, and also by the wife of Nicholas II, the last czar of Russia. She was from Germany and had the birth name Alix, but was renamed Александра (Aleksandra) upon joining the Russian Church.
Tumblr media
Raphael
Gender: Masculine
Usage: German, English, Biblical, Biblical Latin
From the Hebrew name רָפָאֵל (Rafa'el) meaning "God heals", from the roots רָפָא (rafa') meaning "to heal" and אֵל ('el) meaning "God". In Hebrew tradition Raphael is the name of an archangel. He appears in the Book of Tobit, in which he disguises himself as a man named Azarias and accompanies Tobias on his journey to Media, aiding him along the way. In the end he cures Tobias's father Tobit of his blindness. He is not mentioned in the New Testament, though tradition identifies him with the angel troubling the water in John 5:4.
This name has never been common in the English-speaking world, though it has been well-used elsewhere in Europe. A famous bearer was the 16th-century Renaissance master Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520), usually known simply as Raphael.

"Since my return to Makoto, I often think of Camellia... of the King and Crown Princess. The gentle strength and goodness of Princess Ann and how brilliant she is. Soft and sweet, and yet a presence that commanded respect. She is one to truly look up to."
"King John was... I wonder how my life would have been if he were my father instead of..." he trailed off gently, pressing his lips thin. "IT felt like being in a family... a truly kind, accepting family. I think of them often... and I miss them terribly... I do indeed think of Camellia, the memories and friends I made...."
"...but I take comfort that I have taken the best of Camellia with me for my own... Slane is... There was so much fear when I first came; when I decided to come clean... but having him has been a blessing I had not expected. I cannot imagine anyone else by my side... even before our ceremony he is my husband, and one who I love above all else...." His thoughts drifted, and as they did his face turned a darker shade of pink. "He makes my heart light...and my burdens lift... he makes my heart race as well, so much so that I have trouble sleeping. I don't want to take my eyes off of him..."

🌸 ゚・。 * 。 🌟 * ゚・。 * 。 ☆ * :: ( The youngest princess of Camellia ) :: A melodic sound . Let her pull you in and she’ll drag you down
Theodore Eos Li or Theo
The youngest child of the king John and Queen Rose born via magical means due to the queen's complications after her second childes birth. Theo had a relatively normal childhood, one of which was of her fallowing after her older siblings like a little duckling and doing her best to copy their mannerisms. Eventually she grew out of this habit and found her love with everything realted to magic.
Many would find the young princess in the library with her nose deep in a book or studying anything she could get her hands on regarding magic. She often avoided anything related to the royal side of her deity's manly due to her own insecurity's, But despite that she very much speaks her mind and dose her best to be well studied when it comes to the court knowing that eventually she will need to be more involved.

Determination filled the blonde right now.
An appointment to see the King of Camellia, His Majesty John Li. A matter of such importance to see him, a briefcase with some documents, pertaining to the situation he has faced.
All this came from a conversation he had with Sue, of all people.
Since then, he had spoken to Merlin, to Heinrich, to Harriet, to Leland. Out of all of them Heinrich had suggested that what was happening was that the Ministry of Science were having their strings pulled by another department. If anything was to go by from the war, Bowen already knew who it was.
The Ministry of Defence.
A suggestion that he was being overworked in his current job to force him into submission. It wasn't even about Camellia anymore, it was either catch-up work, auditing other reports (which he shouldn't be doing in the first place) or more emergency assignments that kept pulling him away from, what was supposed to be a permanent posting.
It was like the Ministry of Defence didn't care about the alliance.. or they were deliberately trying to find a way of pulling Bowen away from this placement, to use for their own will.
The workload even contravened M.O. S. Protocol. No lunch breaks, everything had to be done by X time by X day or you get penalised. It really didn't sound like the usual Operator's job anymore. He was being treated differently, deliberately.
Now, he had to fight back.
He was still a person. The M.O.D. had no right to treat him otherwise, although, he was warned, they could very much try.
If he was going to fight this, he knew he had to get support from Camellia itself, from the one person who could truly weigh in on this.. that Bowen himself was very much needed here, that nobody, nobody could fill his role otherwise.
This, was the beginning of his stand.

Closed, plotted starter for @whitecrowns-blackthrones !
"He looks so stern, too stern," As soon as Sonia could hear her mother's voice over her shoulder, she sighed, making every effort not to grimace as she descended the grand staircase between both parents. It was unconventional, but so was a Crown Princess for a country who had, until now, yet to be blessed with a future female monarch and a current, reigning king and queen who spent more time apart than together, and the few instances they did ended up in disagreements at best. "One has to wonder if when the artist asked Prince Slane to smile, he chose that expression out of spite."
Sonia closed the cover over the miniature. Covered in scarlet red velvet, it stood out against the sea of cool tones that swathed the Royal Family and most of the Novoselic Court. Perhaps it was an indication of just how out of place the Camellian royal would be as part of the family. King Alexandre and Queen Valentina both wore the forest green and gold colors that represented Novoselic, while Sonia herself had been chosen a gown of light blue silk, adorned with pearls to match her eyes and, for once, make her parents pale in comparison. That wasn't a challenging feat, once the King and Queen were removed from the spotlight and forced into the same space for longer than the length of a tea. She slipped the tiny portrait of her supposed future husband into one of the gown's hidden pockets. It was already uneasy, the prospect of an arranged marriage that she'd avoided, successfully, for so long. But at twenty-three, she was becoming far too old to remain unmarried and far too old to be the mediator between disagreeable parents.
"You haven't even met him yet, Valentina," King Alexandre pointed out tiredly. Sonia supposed it made sense for her father to look weary nowadays, instead of cheerful and joyous. That had been his reaction to his only child and daughter finishing university, returning home and eagerly taking an interest in the running of the country she'd one day inherit. But since the decision had been made to ally with the Kingdom of Camellia by marriage, the King had been subjected with everything from hesitation and plenty of questions from the bride-to-be to downright disapproval and disdain from his wife, who hardly approved of much of anything he did in most cases. Sonia could swear she'd spotted far more greys in his golden-blonde hair and various crinkles around his eyes, ice blue that matched his daughter's.  "Perhaps meet him first before deciding that you dislike him and he's unsuitable for Sonia?" Not that it made much difference anyway: the King had the final word regarding the marriage of his heir, not the Queen.
"I'm only saying that such a somber nature could lead to discomfort amongst the court, much less the people," Her mother insisted, now taking the opportunity to glance over her daughter's posture and complexion, both deemed acceptable, without the pocket-sized portrait of her future son-in-law to dissect. "We need a beautiful, young Royal couple, a Crown Princess and Prince Consort. Two people in love, or at least appearing to be, who shall inspire our nation to work hard and prosper as well. Prince Slane has that sort of face that could dampen even the brightest of occasions."
There wasn't much anyone could do about it now, and all three of them knew it. The scout had already returned with news of the Prince's approaching carriage and possibly entire retinue, so there was no time for last minute letters of dissolution. At least they'd agreed on a minimal welcoming party, mostly at Sonia's urgency. The full court could be overwhelming even to those accustomed to the life, and her father had been adamant that his brother and family be kept at bay at least for the initial meeting. When the Queen had complained about looking a fool in the eyes of the Camellian Royals without a full party, the King had retorted how the Duke tended to cause some sort of trouble when negotiations needed to go off without a hitch. Something Queen Valentina had clearly depended on, but was now left to fend for her daughter's success herself.
"King John Li and I have allied our countries in battle, and now we shall do so in marriage," King Alexandre repeated himself for what sounded like the fiftieth time in the past month, when the papers had been signed. "It is an excellent decision for both Sonia and this country. I'm not sure why the two of you have such reservations." With a wave of his hand, the various members of staff and security assigned to greet the newcomers fell into formation, forming a path for the immediate members of the Royal Family to proceed.
Tumblr media
"It is a possibility that he may just be shy," Sonia finally contributed. Since she was little, she was accustomed to waiting to get a word in once her parents were truly incensed. "And despite the concerns, I'm not sure that this current conversation will lead to any sort of welcome for him. I'm the one who will be greeting him, after all. I hope that for a first impression, I may put my best foot forward."
Valentina's green eyes narrowed some in the direction of her husband and daughter. "You two seem to take great pleasure in going against me whenever possible," She insisted with thin-lipped smile. Out in the courtyard, all eyes were either upon the Royal Family or the line of carriages that had pulled to a stop, doors opening and their inhabitants preparing to disembark.
Sonia smiled in return. It was rare that, in some capacity, she actually agreed with her mother: this arranged marriage was a terrible idea. Even if their reasonings were very different. But she needed to take matters into her own hands without ruffling any feathers, and perhaps making a new friend out of the experience. She could hardly blame the young prince in these matters: for all she knew, Sonia thought as the horns erupted in the Royal Processional, he was just as opposed to the idea of arranged marriage as she was. "Her Royal Highness, Princess Sonia of Novoselic!" The Gerald announced, clearly just as uncomfortable as Queen Valentina was about the Princess, not the King, greeting her new fiancé first. Sonia, however, simply took a deep breath, held her head high, and smiled, walking past both of her parents down the long pathway to the carriages unaccompanied. No matter her feelings on the situation, there was no excuse to be rude and unwelcoming.
Tumblr media
"Prince Slane Ying Li of Camellia, on behalf of myself, my family, the court, and the people, we welcome you to the Kingdom of Novoselic," Sonia greeted him kindly, her high-pitched tone clear as she smiled, dipping into an appropriate curtsy before rising back to her feet. From what she understood, it had likely been quite the journey for him after having examined the maps thoroughly. "Though outside of official appearances, please do call me 'Sonia.' The usage of titles in unnecessary situations tends to bring about unease for me, and it would be wonderful if we could be friends." That was sincere, in any case. Even if the idea of an arranged marriage would dissolve, she was quite happy and interested to make a new friend.
