Books, July - August 2020
The Lawrence Browne Affair - Cat Sebastian [interesting: I liked this a whole lot more on rereading than I did the first time]
Notes from an Apocalypse: A Personal Journey to the End of the World and Back - Mark O’Connell [much funnier than I expected a book featuring this many libertarians to be; also, god damn Ayn Rand and her community- and compassion-fearing nihilistic fanboys]
Queenie - Candice Carty-Williams
Solitaire - Kelley Eskridge * [the only surprise is that I waited until Day 111 of isolation to reread this]
In Praise of Paths: Walking Through Time and Nature - Torbjørn Ekelund, translated by Becky L. Crook *
Her Body and Other Parties - Carmen Maria Machado
Crystal Line - Anne McCaffrey
A Children’s Bible - Lydia Millet *
Daughter of Witches - Patricia C. Wrede
The Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller [you know, I can understand why other people despise this take, but it worked for me]
Folly - Laurie R. King
The Forgotten Beasts of Eld - Patricia McKillip
Boyfriend Material - Alexis Hall [The novel version of spending Friday night home alone on the couch with red wine and French bread-and-butter. Highly satisfying in the moment, and ruthlessly wink-and-nod in-the-know about (a particular sort of) internet culture, in a way that means it should be read now and not later. Although it probably doesn’t really need to be over 400 pages long, I’m not sure what I’d cut, and anyway there’s PINING. (But also: I think this needs a warning for somewhat disordered eating, which is a) a minor but believable characterization detail, and b) not the point of the novel at all, but c) it nagged at me in a really unpleasant way throughout until it was acknowledged)]
An Extraordinary Union - Alyssa Cole
Spirits Abroad - Zen Cho
The Equivalents: A Story of Art, Female Friendship, and Liberation in the 1960s - Maggie Doherty
The Ten Thousand Doors of January - Alix E. Harrow
Something to Talk About - Meryl Wilsner
The Terracotta Bride - Zen Cho
Under Another Sky: Journeys in Roman Britain - Charlotte Higgins
Stormsong - C. L. Polk
On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous - Ocean Vuong
The Only Gold - Tamara Allen [new favorite terrible penis euphemism: “the instrument of contention”]
The Dispossessed - Ursula K. Le Guin
The Snow Queen - Eileen Kernaghan
Wives and Daughters - Elizabeth Gaskell [her character sketches, my god: ”Let Cynthia be ever so proud, ever so glad, or so grateful, or even indignant, remorseful, grieved or sorry, the very fact that she was expected by another to entertain any of these emotions, would have been enough to prevent her expressing them.”]
Fallen into the Pit - Ellis Peters
These Old Shades - Georgette Heyer *
The Genius of Birds - Jennifer Ackerman
Two Rogues Make a Right - Cat Sebastian [conclusion: the Sedgwicks are simply too wholesome for my taste, but I’m probably going to end up rereading the one with the vicar and the ducks anyway]
The Anarchy: The East India Company, Corporate Violence, and the Pillage of an Empire - William Dalrymple [dnf]
The Doctor’s Discretion - EE Ottoman
The Bishop’s Heir - Katherine Kurtz
The Life and (Medieval) Times of Kit Sweetly - Jamie Pacton
This Other London: Adventures in the Overlooked City - John Rogers [dnf]
Death and the Joyful Woman - Ellis Peters
The Glass Hotel - Emily St. John Mandel
The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water - Zen Cho
The King’s Justice - Katherine Kurtz
Catherine House - Elisabeth Thomas
Flight of a Witch - Ellis Peters
Blackfish City - Sam J. Miller [dnf]
Crooked Hallelujah - Kelli Jo Ford
Devil’s Cub - Georgette Heyer * [on the one hand, it’s appalling that we’re meant to cheer for Dominic; on the other, chapter 18 is a comic masterpiece]
A Duke by Default - Alyssa Cole
The Night Watch - Sarah Waters
It Takes Two to Tumble - Cat Sebastian [just as I predicted! and I remain unconvinced by these ducks; after all, I have met a duck]
Hild - Nicola Griffith
Water, Ice & Stone: Science and Memory on the Antarctic Lakes - Bill Green [dnf]
Have His Carcase - Dorothy L. Sayers [I do appreciate how Sayers juggles tonal registers, in order to break up the novel’s prevailing humor - ”A solitary rock is always attractive. All right-minded people feel an overwhelming desire to scale and sit upon it.” - with those raging gratitude-and-obligation scenes and the occasional peek at decisions mercenary and necessary.
A Study in Honor - Claire O’Dell [there’s something interesting here about the world-building dangers of using the present to establish the near future with too much specificity - I know most the books Watson is reading; I like many of them; I realize they’re name-dropped in part as thanks and homage; and I still found myself thinking, “has no one written anything since 2015?”]
The Sugared Game - KJ Charles [no surprise, Maisie and Phoebe are my favorites...now kiss]
Sorcery and Cecilia, or, The Enchanted Chocolate Pot: being the correspondence of two Young Ladies of Quality regarding Various Scandals in London and the Country - Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermer * [yay!]

What are your favorite books besides the American Girl books if you have read them?
Oh goodness! I have lots of favorite books. These are some of my favorite historical fiction/history related fiction books, or fantasy books. A lot these have heterosexual romantic elements to the story. Some of these books have some dark elements to them - usually just characters dying, though.
Also this list is long so I put it under the cut
Classics:
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery
The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley (and The Hero and the Crown)
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (and personally I think Little Men is better)
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
Series:
Al Capone Does My Shirts series
The Agency series by YS Lee
The Cat Royal series by Julia Golding
The Ruby Red Trilogy by Kerstin Gier (+ the two very good German language movies based on the books, if you can find them!)
The Little House books by Laura Ingles Wilder
The Royal Diaries series
Betsy-Tacy series by Maud Hart Lovelace
Mystery:
A Northern Light / A Gathering Light by Jennifer Donnelly
The Season by Sarah MacLean
Secret Letters by Leah Scheier
Historical:
Distant Waves by Suzanne Weyn
Firehorse by Diane Lee Wilson
Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan
Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse
Witness by Karen Hesse
The River Between Us by Richard Peck
The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare
Catherine Called Birdy by Karen Cushman
The Midwife's Apprentice by Karen Cushman
Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell

But Life Goes On and The Cat Is Fat
But Life Goes On and The Cat Is Fat
I woke up today  just like any other day to find that I still am not rich like Gates, Koch, or Fitch but life goes on and the cat is fat.
I had breakfast today Not great but better than curds and whey No one came to the door for my autograph like Duane, Taylor or Jennifer but life goes on and the cat is fat.
I got ready and headed to work with just a bit of a smirk Haven’t heard from Nike, Adidas or Under Armor yet for a contract like Michael, Lebron or O’Dell gets but life goes on and the cat is fat
I put my time in to pay my bills and put some coin in the cashier's tills the media did not hound me and the pundits did not praise me like Nancy, Donald, or Bernie but life goes on and the cat is fat
I came home had dinner, and relaxed a bit with my family and friends around I did sit I am quite content without the sideshows attention, fame, wealth and empty chateau and life goes on and the cat is fat
I have my treasures sitting around me my rewards I will see in a heavenly eternity my wealth is safely stored where moth and rust will not corrupt and I have the peace of God that no one can interrupt. My life goes on and the cat is still fat.

Dummy — Mandatory Enjoyment (Trouble In Mind)
Tumblr media
Mandatory Enjoyment by Dummy
It's no accident that one of Dummy’s most intriguing songs is called “Static X-Blanket,” because this is a band that bangs you down hard then wraps you in a fuzzy blanket of hum. Their songs offer a weird, intoxicating mix of judder and solace, like Clinic on a micro-dose. A hard rain of eighth note strumming pounds down in tin roof clangor, but softness, sweetness and trippy good feelings permeate all. You might be tempted to split the band’s sound by gender, since keyboardist Emma Maatman generates both the high, pretty vocal melodies and the insistent ambient buzz of keyboards, while the guys — Joe Trainor, Nathan O’Dell and Alex Ewell — man the aggro guitar-and-drums blitz. But that’s probably simplistic. This is a band that likes noise and tune in equal measure. One without the other is like yin without the yang.
Dummy formed around the nucleus of Joe Trainor, Nathan O’Dell and Alex Ewell, two guitar players and a drummer formerly of Baltimore’s Wildhoney, now relocated to Los Angeles. There they met Maatman, a highly regarded graphic artist who has played in punk bands including Catholic Spit, Kent State and Taarkus. Two EPs, a self-titled and one called EP2, were released in 2020. Mandatory Enjoyment is the band’s first full-length.
And, oh, what a ride it is, starting with the trippy, “Astronomy Domine”-ish “Protostar,” bounding into heady, French-pop on a ragged edge “Ceramic Fissure,” zooming through thumping, droning post-punk “H.V.A.C.” and ending up in the gamelan-influenced (serious about this) “Atonal Poem,” which finds a monk-like serenity amid clamor and chant. Dummy lists some intriguing influences, the Velvet Underground, Laraaji and Cluster to name a few, but there is unmistakable homage to My Bloody Valentine on this disc, too, in the guitars of “Punk Product #4” and especially “Cloud Pleaser,” which quotes “Soon”’s vertiginous dip and swoon in its final minute or so.
All of which makes for a listening experience that simultaneously braces and soothes, agitates and lulls. It’s full of sharp edges and rough noises, but it’s also kind of like a pillow. How do they do both things at once? That’s a mystery, one that makes for one of the best rock records of 2021.

Back Roads
It would appear that Alex Pettyfer has something to prove, and not just as a director. A longtime fixture in such stymied would-be blockbusters as Stormbreaker, I Am Number Four, and Beastly, the career actor wants to show the world that he’s got a creative streak of his own meant for a fuller degree of artistic authority.
Having logged his time in productions inviting the modification of Pettyfer to Prettyface, he’s prepared to forge his own path through the industry as his own man. “I was disillusioned by Hollywood, but now I’ve come to accept that’s just the way things are: it’s called show business, not show art,” he said in a 2011 interview.
What’s more, he evinces a drive to prove that he’s capable of being a Serious Cineaste, the sort of helmer ready to handle mature themes like rape, incest, and rural poverty. In his first outing on both sides of the camera, he gestures towards Andrea Arnold’s miserablism on display in Fish Tank and – perhaps more accurately, considering the transatlantic vantage point on the culture of the States – American Honey.
Pettyfer, a fashion model from age seven born into a family of actors, won’t be seen as a bubblehead. He will play the world’s most conspicuously handsome adult virgin without any de-prettifying measures, and he’ll do his damnedest to make us believe it.
He gets his big chance with Back Roads, an adaptation of the Oprah-approved Tawni O’Dell’s play about the Atlmeyer clan of Sadness Junction, Pennsylvania. (Adrian Lyne prepped the script for the screen, explaining the lurid atmosphere teetering on the edge of quasi-intentional comedy.) Long story short, Mom (Juliette Lewis) shot Dad after one night of abuse too many, leaving Harley (Pettyfer) to look after his sexually precocious teen sister Amber (Nicola Peltz) and his normally precocious kid sister Misty (Chiara Aurelia).
Tumblr media
As they all lick their post-traumatic psychical wounds, Amber fucks anything that fogs a mirror while the deeply repressed Harley finds comfort in the arms of an older woman (Jennifer Morrison). The events that follow will visit more tragedy upon them while clarifying the true nature of that one fateful night, both of which send the characters into emotional terrain that Pettyfer cannot traverse.
The welterweight is punching way above his class, laid out by material of howling, skeleton-to-soul feeling that demands a director of great control and restraint to be executed successfully. Like so many actors making an entrée to directing, Pettyfer places far too much trust in his cast, giving them the free rein that every performer dreams about.
Lewis screams from behind prison glass like a pachyderm shot with a dart, while Peltz locates a midway point between Lolita and a Nomi Malone not in on the joke of Showgirls. Pettyfer saves the grand finale for himself, turning the climactic moment of epiphany in therapy into something uncomfortable, then hilarious, then sad for all the wrong reasons.
Though hidden for two years from UK viewers more invested in the arc of Pettyfer’s career, this film now stands as a testament to hubris, an inverse vanity through which a star declares their own depth and sensitivity by placing themselves in an unflattering light. Without the discipline required to pull off this pose, it rings just as hollow as shameless self-flattery.
That may sound harsh, but at least Pettyfer’s tastes, shortcomings and unflagging belief in himself leave a radioactive glow that comes only from the most reliably engrossing strain of failure: the misguided passion project, that unsupervised playpen in which no one can stop the pursuit of a bad idea to its completion.

“The Most Mysterious Woman…” Identified!
“The Most Mysterious Woman…” Identified! By Neely Tucker Published June 29, 2020 at 09:41AM
The photo that stumped readers for years. She looked so familiar, yet no one could identify her.
Cary O’Dell at the Library’s National Recording Registry is the maestro of our ever-popular Mystery Photo Contest. He’s back with big news.
It was a mystery that I was beginning to think would never be solved.
You’ll remember, dear readers of our Mystery Photo Contest, the dark-haired actress in the striped shirt. The pensive gaze off camera. The dark eyes. Her identity had flummoxed us for so long I eventually nicknamed her “The Most Mysterious Woman in the World” last December.
Half a year later, kids, we announce this mystery is SOLVED!
Our heroine in alive and well and still working in the film and television industry. She was identified by James Owen, the only reader to match the face to the name in a couple of years of online guesses. He was nearly as excited as I was when I let him know the news: “Very cool! Happy to help!”
And our mystery woman’s name is – wait, don’t you want to hear the story first?
Most of you know of my ongoing search to put names with some of the unidentified movie, TV and music photos we found within a very large collection of press stills acquired by the Library a few years ago. We posted many of these unidentified faces in our Mystery Photo Contest and you guys have been terrific at tracking them down. Among others, there was Cynthia Lynn, she of “Hogan’s Heroes,” and Esther Anderson, the Jamaican actress and film producer.
But one of the most puzzling of all was that soft-focus photo of the young actress coolly looking off to her right, posed before a blurry background. Guesses poured in. Her secret to anonymity seemed to be that she so resembled so many other actresses of the late ’60s and early ’70s that she looked like everyone and no one. When I sent the photo to Tina Sinatra — a popular guess — she said, “Yes, we all looked alike at that time with our Marlo Thomas hair.”
Some of the other guesses that readers ventured: Marlo Thomas herself, Paula Prentiss, Celeste Yarnall, Dana Delany, Sherry Jackson, Kim Darby, Lucie Arnaz, Stephanie Zimbalist, Susan Saint James, Barbara Parkins, Bonnie Bedelia, Diana Canova, Lynn Loring, Katharine Ross and Linda Harrison.
I reached out to all of these women over the past couple of years. One by one, they all said some variation of, “Nope. Not me.”
But after our December “most mysterious woman” post, new guesses flooded in. I went back to work. Some of the very gracious actresses I contacted after reader suggestions: Mary McDonnell, Gail Hire, Anne Archer, Katherine Justice, Sabrina Scharf, Jody Miller, Maureen McGovern, Samantha Eggar, Jennifer Salt, Pamela Tiffin and Lesley Ann Warren.
You guessed it: Zilch. De nada. Nothing.
Then there was that guess from James Owen. I had dutifully fired off an email to the actress he suggested. And, on a recent day, I got a response. I clicked it open.
“That’s a very nice photo of me,” wrote Wendy Phillips. “Thanks. I hadn’t seen it before.”
Yes, in fact, I did almost fall out of my chair.
After I read that line several times over, I immediately replied:  “ARE YOU KIDDING?  That’s you?!  Could you call me?”
Wendy Phillips today. Photo: Courtesy Wendy Phillips.
Brooklyn native Wendy Phillips began her career in 1975 at the age of 23, starring in the critically-acclaimed TV adaptation of “Death Be Not Proud” (opposite Robby Benson). She’s been working ever since. The Internet Movie Database counts 89 credits over the past 45 years, including the big screen’s “Bugsy,” “I Am Sam” and “Airplane II.”  On TV, she has starred in “Promised Land,” “A Year in the Life,” “Falcon Crest,” “Home Front” and “Big Love.” Her most recent role was appearing in two episodes of CBS’s “Seal Team” in 2018.
In our conversation, she said she thinks our mystery photo was taken on the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lot. “It wasn’t unusual to be pulled off a soundstage by a photographer or the press department and be made to quickly pose and get a picture, kind of on the run,” she said. “The funny part is I remember the outfit because I hated the sleeves.”
She continued: “I am pretty sure it was from a pilot I did called ‘Love Tapes.’ The original script was called ‘They’re Playing Our Tapes’– ugh!  It was made by MGM and then got tied up in legal battles between the executive producer and the studio.  It finally aired in 1980 as a TV movie.”
The pilot never took off, but it wasn’t from the lack of talent. It featured several female TV stars of the era — Loretta Swit (better known as Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan from “M*A*S*H”), Mariette Hartley (lots of westerns and those great Polaroid commercials with James Garner) and Jan Smithers (Bailey on “WKRP in Cincinnati”).
Of our epic search for her, I said, “We tried to make you Barbara Parkins and Dana Delaney….”
“Oh, yes,” she said. “Dana and I had a similar look, were a similar type; she and I and Erin Gray were always auditioning against each other.”
She was quite amused by our lengthy search and cheerfully noted the photo was far from the best likeness of her. I would like to thank her not only for solving this mystery but also for her good humor that went along with it.  And I would like to thank James Owen, the one (and only one) who suggested “Wendy Phillips” in the first place.
