Chapter 13

“It’s good to see you again, Captain . . .”

I'm just thinking about that Spongebob joke. “Oh east. I thought you said weast.”

By the lack of information coming from Ivy, it was a good bet that the I.S. Knew what was going on and was sitting this one out. They knew all the victims had similar auras, but had suppressed the knowledge.

THEY DO THAT WITH EVERYTHING. WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU SURPRISED?!

“Glenn is right. If Weast decides you’re a threat, he might try to put you in the cell next to the zombies.”

Chapter 13 summary: Trent, Rachel, and Jenks go to the coffee shop to meet up with Glenn, who is randomly back in town. (He had a weird relationship with Ivy and it sent him packing to Arizona. He hasn't been seen or heard from since.)

As they're waiting, Rachel tells him that Dali wants an introduction to one of the Rosewood babies. Trent says that he feels bad about what he did about those babies, how he almost killed them to keep them from the demons. But he says that Dali is probably using it to boost the status of all of the demons, and thinks that the parents could benefit from a relationship with Dali as well. Rachel points out that it's only Al and Dali who live in their world, while the rest of the demons are watching to see what happens.

Glenn shows up, along with a man that they've seen before. He gave Trent and Rachel a memory blocker about their help with the human-based supernatural-hate group, but thanks to their time at the youth camp when they were younger, that stuff doesn't work on them anymore. His name is Weast, and okay there Patrick Star.

Anyway, the baku belongs to this hate group, and when the lines went down when Landon was mucking around with shit, it got out. Except that these pretentious a-holes are too proud to accept Rachel's help when they offered it. Because racism.

Before they leave, Rachel guilts Glenn into what he's doing, saying that his father would not approve. But they're worried that they might try to capture the lot of them before they leave town.

Chapter 14

“Trent!” I shouted, but I don’t think the word made it past my lips as Hodin yanked me into a ley line, and I was nothing more than a thought.

Chapter 14 summary: After the almost usual padding about Rachel sitting around and doing jack-all that relates to the plot, she sits down with Trent to discuss the book's plot. They talk about using the same kind of soul jar to capture the baku, but they aren't sure that it'll work since it's more of a build-up of energy than an actual soul. They also talk about how Weast is walking around with a ley-line dampening amulet, but they aren't sure that it's going to work on the baku, since it's getting energy from the host.

Trent then reads some passages from his mother's journal, which sounds suspiciously like what they're currently going through. However, Rachel notes that several pages were torn out. And Trent confirms this, and says that if they did manage to capture the baku, then the knowledge of how to do so is gone now.

He notices a ring on Rachel's finger, one that Hodin had given her. They talk about the possibility of Rachel shifting her aura so that the baku isn't attracted to her. Rachel tries to use the ring to contact Hodin, but when he doesn't respond, she says a lot of nasty things about him. But then he shows up in pixie form, and drags Rachel into the new ever-after.

Style wise, he’s the opposite of Dizzy - while they’re very stereotypically faerie, Jenks prefers to dress as human as possible. He cuts the back of t-shirts and jackets to make slots for his wings, likes to wear jeans and sneakers, etc. 

Like Thistle he tends to have a very grungy type style because all his clothes are second hand. But he also just likes distressed clothing, he thinks it looks ‘more real’. He also likes patches - on his jeans, on his jackets. Vaguely punk/e-boy looks.

He likes beanies and baseball hats. Usually wears headphones around his neck.

Likes to pair t-shirts with jackets/flannel over them best. Or layered looks of t-shirts over longer sleeved shirts. Mistaken as an alt. High school kid glamoured.

Thistle helps him replace any buttons or zippers that are steel or iron.

I spent the first three weeks detailing 5-star reviews from 2017. I have run out (most of my reviews are 3-4 stars) so for the final 10 days of 2017, I'm delving into some of my favorite romance novels/series to date.

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining—and it's Rachel Morgan's job to keep that world civilized. A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she'll bring 'em back alive, dead . . . or undead.

Review: I LOVE THIS SERIES!!! I could fangirl all over this one and if you've been following this month you'll notice this is the only non-romance on the list. I've tried series by Laurell K. Hamilton, Patricia Briggs, Charlaine Harris, Jeaniene Frost, and Jim Butcher, and none kept my attention. But killer tomatoes, bisexual vamps, charismatic elves, sexy as sin demons, and a five-inch swashbuckling pixie named Jenks stole my heart. I have read and re-read the series and still miss it. If you haven't read it yet, it's so good...lots of action, suspense, a whole lot of humor with a little heartache and romance. This series has earned a forever spot and is the only series that I have in hardback and paperback! Now I want to read it again...

Witch With No Name Chapters 25 & 26

Chapter 25

“Manual it is,” the vampire said, and with a soft grunt, she planted a side kick on the lock, exploding the door inward.

Chapter 25 summary: They all go to what's apparently the only hotel in Cincinnati (which considering that there's apparently one coffee shop, it checks out). Like most of this series, there's a lot of stuff that's going on, but it's like “Nina whines for five paragraphs about not having a gun” and “Jenks complains about old-school technology and how he can't get in”. It's pointless and adds nothing to the plot.

Trent and Rachel go into the room where Ellie and Landon are supposed to be staying with the kidnapped Lucy. However, in the room they find Ellie tied up, and spitting mad. She basically regurgitates Landon's evil plot, but the others are unimpressed because they figured it out ages ago. For some reason, despite the book constantly wanking off about how Lucy is a seat of power, Landon left her unsupervised in the room with Ellie. This allows mother and daughter to escape while Trent and Rachel go face down Landon.

Chapter 26

That probably wasn’t going to go over very well.

Chapter 26 summary: They fight Landon and his supporters. Despite everything, and if only because there's still a few more chapters left, the lines start to collapse anyway.

...That's it. That's literally the entire goddamned chapter. I am so fucking tired of this series. I don't give a fuck anymore.

‘Dead Witch Walking’ by Kim Harrison

Rating: ★★★★★  

This is the first audio book I have ever listened to and oh my god. The narrator was absolutely amazing. I am so excited to start the rest of the series. Story wise, it was great. With this genre of book, some things are usually very predictable. But, I was pleasantly surprised with the way things happened. It was different and not what I expected.

I ended up reading this because it was one of the ‘book of the month’ for a group I am a part of on Goodreads. It’s one that I have always been meaning to read because a good friend has recommended it to me. My mother has also read, and loved, the whole series. I can see why now. The writing was wonderful. The characters were fabulous. OH MY GOD! Jenks is the absolute best! I would love a book with him as the main character. I may actually love him more because of the audio book though. The voice the narrator used in the audio book was just perfect. UGHHH! I need more Jenks! I swear I don’t have a problem....

Also! One of my friends has completely ruined something that is going to happen in the series. I SWEAR that I won’t tell you what that is until I get to it. It’s huge. But, it’s great. Still...drives me insane that he ruined it for me.

Anyway, this is definitely worth reading. I can’t get over how good it was.

So, Rachel is a runner. She works to collect people, supernaturals, and turn them in. It’s kind of like a bounty hunter. But, she is tired of working for the I.S. So, she decides it’s time for her to leave and start her own running business. Which is exactly what she does with a little help from Jenks the pixy and Ivy the vampire. 

If you leave the I.S., they will put out a contract to have you killed. Told you, they are just bounty hunters. Anyway, so Rachel now has a contract out on her. Because of that, there are people constantly trying to kill her. They have even spelled all of the stuff in her apartment. Now, she has to go live with Ivy at an old church. Yeah, it’s weird a vampire is living in a church.

There is something called Brimstone. It’s like a drug. There are also Biodrugs. It’s weird. Just read the book to understand. Anyway, someone is making and distributing biodrugs. Turns out, it’s someone who is a well known business man. So, Rachel goes after him.

When she tries to get a hold of some evidence, she is caught. She is then locked up in a cage until the business man decides to try to have her killed. I’m trying to not give away EVERYTHING.

Anyway, so in the end, the F.I.B. decide to listen to Rachel. Because of that, they realize who is distributing the biodrugs. Unfortunately, the evidence they had on him was destroyed. Which means, it’s time for Rachel to start over.

Dead Witch Walking - Kim Harrison. I have read 109 pages.

Summary: Rachel Morgan recently decides to quite her job and leave to make her own business. She had a feeling that everyone wanted her to leave because she wasn’t getting many good runs anymore and wanted to change that. She wasn’t expected to be hunted down and killed almost every time she turned a corner. She broke her contract with her company, and her friend Ivy left too. Ivy was able to pay off her contract so she isn’t being hunted down to be killed. Rachel Morgan is having trouble finding transportation and housing because she was black listed by her ex-landlady. Rachel’s things have been spelled to try and kill her if she touches any of them. She was recently almost killed in an attack that had happened in the middle of public. Ivy was born a living vampire. Vampires all have an urge for blood and there are things that you should not do when living in close quarters with a vampire. Rachel did all of those things and then almost was bitten and claimed by Ivy.

Character Chart:

Rachel Morgan: 

Still as hard headed as every. She tends to try not to bring attention to herself and is not very successful at it. She also tries her hardest in the few pages that I have read not to draw the attention of Ivy in a romantic way. She enjoys working with Ivy and Jenks and wants to protect them.

Ivy: 

Ivy tries her hardest to keep in control of herself. She is having trouble with that because she is not drinking blood and doesn’t want to be a undead vampire. She wants to still be alive. She is doing this to get back at her mom who set them up with Denon being their boss. She does what she does to throw it back in her mothers face that she can do what she wants.

Jenks:

.Jenks is a pixie who is tasked with being a partner/ babysitter for Rachel. He knows that she needs his help otherwise she would have been dead long before then. Jenks enjoys being around her even though he doesn’t act like it. He puts up and act and tries to seem more fighty than he is.

Keasley:

Keasley is a new character who Rachel mistakes his house for the building they are going to be living in. She goes up and he tells her that he isn’t interested in whatever she is selling. She is confused and tells him that she is a new tenant and he says that she got the wrong address. He tells her that the numbers are backwards on the street. He ends up helping her because she had a spell on her that would only activate when she was by herself and without witnesses. He took the spell of and then parted ways with her. 

Commentary:

In Dead Witch Walking I found that Ivy held more of my interest. She held my interest because of the fact that she holds herself in a mystery. I want to solve what make Ivy tick and it makes me curious. “They were black, obviously, but Ivy said the color suited me just fine” (Harrison, 74). This line shows that she enjoys wearing darker colors and that tends to go into hand of mysterious. Ivy would be a round character. Her personality and things develop as Rachel's does. She would be a protagonist in this story if you looked at who they would be going against.
