Canadian Jeff (The Silencer) Smith wins North American darts title at MSG

It was a day to remember for Jeff (The Silencer) Smith at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

The 47-year-old from Hampton, N.B., edged Hamilton's Matt (The Ginja Ninja) Campbell on Saturday afternoon to win the bet365 North American Championship darts title for the second time. Smith then won his way into the evening final of the bet365 U.S. Darts Masters, only to lose 8-0 to world No. 3 Michael van Gerwen.

The Dutch star claimed the 20,000-pound (US$24,900) top prize in securing a record-extending 18th World Series of Darts title. Van Gerwen also won the event in 2017.

Smith opened play in the North American Championship earlier in the day by defeating Canadian veteran Jim (The Gentleman) Long, rallying from a 5-3 deficit to win 6-5. Smith then downed American No. 1 Jules van Dongen 6-1 and Hamilton's Campbell to claim the US$10,000 first prize.

With the match tied at five legs apiece, Campbell had a chance to win with a 114 checkout. But after a 20, he missed a triple-18. Smith then hit the double-eight he needed for the victory.

Smith also won the event, which features eight North American competitors, in 2018.

"It feels good," said Smith. "Winning in Las Vegas was special, but to win in New York -- this is unreal. I think this is the venue for North American darts. We had a ton of support here, it's unbelievable."

Smith and Campbell will play as partners later this month in the My Diesel Claim World Cup of Darts in Frankfurt, Germany.

Smith kept winning in the U.S. Darts Masters, beating England's Nathan Aspinall, the 2019 champion, 6-2 in the quarterfinal Saturday evening and then England's Luke Humphries 7-6 on a 167 finish to reach the final.

Long lost his quarterfinal 6-2 to van Gerwen.

The 55-year-old from London, Ont., was the talk of the darts world Friday after defeating world champion Michael (Bully Boy) Smith. Long won the first-round matchup 6-2, surviving five 180s from the top-seeded world No. 1 from England to advance to the quarterfinals after landing three 180s and converted 97 and 115 checkouts.

"I'm still taking it in. Michael is the cream of the crop. I'm ecstatic," said Long, a former World Cup of Darts quarter-finalist. "This is the biggest win of my career by far. I was so nervous. I had so many friends here tonight so it's a very special moment for me.

"It's an honour to play these guys. As North American dart players, it's a real blessing to have the opportunity to play the best players in the world."

Jeff Smith also recorded an upset, ousting third-seeded Peter (Snakebite) Wright of Scotland 6-2.

Wright is ranked second in the world by the PDC compared to No. 68 for Jeff Smith.

Van Gerwen defeated Canadian Jake Macmillan 6-2 in other first-round action. Aspinall needed to stave off a rally by Campbell to defeat the Canadian No. 1.

Campbell fought back from 4-2 down to level the match at 4-4, only to see Aspinall win legs in 11 and 14 darts to win 6-4.

The field at the two-day event features 16 players contesting 60,000 pounds (US$74,710) in prize money and the third World Series title of 2023.

Day Three 2018/19

World number one Michael van Gerwen would have expected to take the headlines as he began his World Championship challenge, but he would not have foreseen them being written before he reached the stage.

During his walk-on a drink thrown from the crowd doused the Dutchman, who then returned backstage to regain his composure.

Despite the drenching, van Gerwen turned out a 102.59 average against an impressive Alan Tabern to win 3-1.

Van Gerwen will now face Max Hopp in round three after the German beat Danny Noppert in straight sets. While Noppert did make a 130 checkout, his performance was no doubt held back by making just three of his 22 double attempts.

The afternoon’s first round action brought success for Richard North, who edged Robert Marijanovic 3-2, Josh Payne, who won with the same score against Jeff Smith, and Jim Long – the Canadian coming from a set down against Michael Mansell for a 3-1 victory.

In the evening Toni Alcinas, Ryan Searle and Keegan Brown all progressed, winning 3-0 against Craig Ross, Stephen Burton and Karel Sedlacek respectively.

BBC AMERICA Expands Its Record-Breaking Professional Darts Coverage

BBC AMERICA today announced the expansion of its highly successful broadcast and streaming of Professional Darts, adding the 2018/2019 World Darts Championship from London’s sold-out Alexandra Palace from December 13 to January 1. The best matches of the week will air Sunday mornings from 9:00am-12:00pm ET. BBCA will stream a record 111 hours live on BBC America.com. The Final will air in primetime on BBC AMERICA on Tuesday, January 1 at 9:30pm ET following the Doctor Who New Year’s Day special.

This year’s World Championship includes U.S. Champion Chuck Puleo, North American Champion and Canadian Jeff Smith and Canadian Jim Long, in the largest field the event has ever seen, with 96 competitors battling for over $3.1 million in prize money and the prestigious Sid Waddell Trophy.

The biggest names in the sport have been generating buzz in the weeks leading up to the championship – reigning World Champion Rob Cross “Voltage,” world number one Michael van Gerwen “Mighty Mike,” Gary Anderson “The Flying Scotsman,” recent Grand Slam champion Gerwyn Price “The Iceman,” Peter Wright “Snakebite,” Russia’s Anastasia Dobromyslova, England’s Lisa Ashton and more will take the center stage.

Puleo, who topped the domestic rankings this year to earn his World Championship debut, plays World Youth Champion Dimitri Van den Bergh in the competition’s first round on Tuesday, December 18.

BBC AMERICA launched its darts initiative with the 2017/2018 World Darts Championship, the most watched darts tournament on US TV in a decade, beating professional darts coverage on sports networks including NBC Sports Network, FS1, FS2, ESPN Classic, and ESPNU. That elite competition reached nearly 4 million unique viewers on BBC America, with the final trending globally on Twitter and setting the stage for the expansion into Premier League Darts which drew over 10 million unique viewers on the channel. Premier League Darts also generated nearly 3 million livestream views, growing +9x from the first half to the second half of the tournament. Livestream views consist of views on BBCAmerica.com and Facebook.

A fan-fueled fringe sport phenomenon, darts is second only to football (aka soccer) as a televised sport in the UK. It has the spectacle of wrestling, the stakes of poker and it has fans beyond anything you’ve seen in their enthusiasm.
