Clerks II (2006, dir. Kevin Smith) - review by Rookie-Critic

Clerks II was a serviceable successor to the original. Going directly from the original film, which was made for a little over $27.5K, directly into this one gave me a bit of tonal and stylistic whiplash. Maybe that would be different if I had watched the 4 View Askewniverse films between the two, but that wasn't the case, so it was jarring. Simply put, this one isn't anywhere near as good as the original; the acting is ok at best (save for Rosario Dawson, who really brings it), there's still some of that wild homophobia as well as a scene containing an intensely uncomfortable amount of racial slurs that then turns into a running gag for the rest of the film, and that sense of purpose that the original film had is scarcely found here. Randall, who was far and away my absolute favorite character in the original, feels different. The young guy who made the most of his situation and thought the world was stupid and laughed at it seems bitter and and angry at the world around him here. Don't get it twisted, a lot of the jokes Randall makes in the film still land effectively, and maybe that's part of the point of the film, but it just made me sad.

What worked, and it worked really well, was Jay & Silent Bob. These 2 characters are significantly more hilarious than in the original Clerks. Jason Mewes had about 12 years under his belt playing this character by the time Clerks II was made, so he'd more than gotten it down by that point. Also, the friendship between Dante and Randall still works very well. Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson still had it here and they effortlessly fall back into their respective rolls to boost the film up. Lastly, there's a specific sentimentality that Kevin Smith likes to inject into his films, and man is it infectious. I won't say too much about it here, because I'm also going to mention it more in depth in my review for Clerks III and it is way more pertinent to that movie than this one, but just know that sentimentality and a genuine love that you can tell Kevin Smith feels for Dante and Randall helped save this movie for me.

Also, I feel like I ragged on the film a lot in this review and just wanted to say that I didn't dislike it that much. It's still genuinely funny and has way more heart than a movie like this should ever have.

Clerks III--28 years after their day was chronicled in Kevin Smith's 1994 indie debut feature, Dante and Randal are still working at New Jersey convenience store Quick Stop Groceries, still playing hockey on the roof, and still bickering like an old married couple. In this sequel to 2006's Clerks II, Randal (Jeff Anderson) is stricken with a heart attack. In the face of this scrape with mortality, he decides to write and direct a movie, with Dante (Brian O'Halloran) as his reluctant producer.

The subject, it need hardly be said, is his life at the counter of a New Jersey convenience store, and his encounters with the various oddballs that frequent the place, among them Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith), Christian Crypto-Currency enthusiast and clerk Elias (Trevor Fehrman) and Dante's ex-girlfriend Veronica (Marilyn Ghigliotti).

The wacky escapades, and the drama, that arise from financing and shooting the movie-within-the-movie make up the balance of the story. Smith freely mixes lowbrow schtick, pop culture chatter and celebrity cameos with religious debate and heartfelt sentiment. Some of it falls flat; some of it is delightful. The old running gags and catchphrases--"I'm not even supposed to be here today," "thirty-seven?" etc--are deployed to good effect, Rosario Dawson has a couple of sweet scenes as Dante's beloved Becky, and when Jay and Silent Bob do their little dance in front of the store, it has a certain silent-clown magic.

But the real sting in Clerks III has do with seeing these characters still going through the same '90s-style slacker paces with soulfully dissipated middle-aged faces. Despite their arrested-adolescent poses, both Anderson and (especially) O'Halloran get across a sense of having emotionally matured; they show a warmth that deepens this silly fan-service movie.

Movie Review: Clerks III

Kevin Smith’s 1994 directorial debut Clerks is my all-time favorite of his films. When I was getting into filmmaking, seeing Clerks was highly influential. It was a full-on “you can do this too” moment for me. Shot on 16mm black and white, he made a clever and funny movie about a convenient store, shot at the convenient store he was working at. In Sept 1993 it premiered at the Independent Film Market in NYC. Then it went on to play and win at Sundance in January 1994, where Miramax acquired it. This little $27,000 film didn’t remain a $27,000 film for long (not after you tally up the distribution cost, marketing cost, new soundtrack, etc). It also came out at a moment and time when the media was talking about 20-somethings, or the so-called Generation Xers. Here was a topical movie about 20-somethings working at a convenience store and video store (the same year as Reality Bites about college grads who couldn’t get good jobs). Miramax gave it a limited release in October 1994 and it eventually grossed $3 mil. at the box office. Not a big deal after Blair Witch, but still a big deal for indies when you consider budget-to-profit ROI. The film put Kevin Smith on the map. His characters have popped up in various View Askewniverse films, but he returned to the store in 2006 with Clerks II. Now he has come full circle with Dante and Randal, now in their 50s, in Clerks III, opening in theaters today from Lionsgate and Fathom Events.

Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson) are now owners of the Quickstop Convenience Store. But things get serious when Randal has a heart attack (not a spoiler as it happens at the very beginning and has been in the trailers). After surviving the heart attack, Randal decides that he wants to do something with his life and make an indie film with the help of Dante, co-worker Elias (Trevor Ferhman), Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) at the Quickstop while they’re working there. It’s very life-imitates-art as Smith himself suffered a massive heart attack in 2018. Meanwhile, Dante is still haunted by the memory of his ex Becky (Rosario Dawson reprising her role from Clerks II).

While it might seem like an easy target for Smith to make a very meta comedy about his previous films and characters (i.e. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot), this felt like a filmmaker returning to his roots and having something personal to say. Unlike Clerks II which filmed a little in NJ but mostly in Hollywood, this was entirely filmed in NJ. There’s also loads of cameos from the cast of the original Clerks returning to play their small roles they did in the original for the movie-within-the-movie. Without getting into spoilers, the film takes some really dark and serious turns that I wasn’t expecting. With the exception of Chasing Amy, when there is a dramatic or emotional scene in a Smith film (i.e. Jersey Girl or Jay and Silent Bob Reboot), it can feel like he’s trying too hard to prove himself as a filmmaker. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying “Kevin Smith - stay in your lane and only make raunchy comedies”, not saying that at all. Even when he has tried his hand at horror with Red State and Tusk, even though I was disappointed in both films, I admired that he was trying something different but still distinctly Kevin Smith. Some of the dramatic scenes early in Clerks III had that feeling of trying too hard, but stay with it. As it goes along, it worked and both O’Halloran and Anderson (who you don’t see as often as you should outside of the View Askewniverse) both rise to the challenge. For the hard core fans of Clerks, there are loads of inside jokes and even the ending (*semi-spoiler*) is referencing the original never-released ending of Clerks. But the core of this film is the friendship of Dante and Randal. It is two lifelong friends and co-workers who are now middle-aged and coming to grips with their own mortality. And yes, there are some big laughs if you just want to laugh! At times, Smith is trying to play to Gen Z (jokes about Tik Tok and NFTs were not as funny), but the big laughs more than make up for those. But overall it is a big comeback. Welcome back, Mr. Smith!
