Back from vacation! Real hard picking a favorite thing from Japan, but one of the faves for sure was seeing Japanese Giant Salamanders at the Kyoto Aquarium. Will be slowly getting back into them ceramic things.

Search For The Last of Japan's Giant Salamanders
I knew that giant salamanders in general were in trouble but sheesh. Imagine having the second largest amphibian in the world be so ignored that it might just go extinct in our lifetime. I was saddened when I learned that the giant chinese paddlefish had just been declared extinct, among other other things because I didn’t knew it existed until then. As James says in the video, we often fantasize about bringing back ancient species and finding lost worlds where prehistory never left. But some of these creatures are still alive today and we’re letting them die because most don’t care or even know about them. Let’s at least spread the word so that we can help and not forget these and all the othere species that are struggling in these trying times.

Japanese Giant Salamander (Andrias japonicus)
Family: Cryptobranchidae (Giant Salamander Family)
IUCN Conservation Status: Near Threatened
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Native to northern Kyushu and western Honshu in the Japanese archipelago, the Japanese Giant Salamander is one of the largest amphibians on earth - it grows to be over 1.5 meters (5 feet) long, and can weigh up to 25kg (55.12lbs.) It lives on the bottom of cold, fast-flowing mountain streams where it relies on camouflage to take its prey (primarily insects, worms, crustaceans and small fish), by surprise, using its wide mouth to suck prey towards it before swallowing them whole. Primarily nocturnal, it spends the day sleeping under rocks and emerges at night, slowly crawling along the streambed in search of food (although due to their extremely slow metabolism, adults of this species can go for weeks without eating.) Japanese Giant Salamanders breed in the early Autumn/Fall, with males seeking out abandoned burrows, small caverns or grooves in the streambed to use as nests and fiercely defending them from rival males - it has even been reported that larger males may swallow smaller rivals to gain access to a potential nest. Once a female finds a male with a suitable nest nest she will approach him and lay a clutch of 400-600 eggs, which he will fertilize externally and then guard until they hatch 12-15 weeks later. Although they lack gills, Japanese Giant Salamanders are capable of breathing underwater by carrying out respiration through their thin, wrinkly skin - they also have lungs, but it seems that these are non-functional, vestigial organs that can no longer carry out gas exchange.
Extra Fun Fact: The character of King Andrias, a giant newt from the Disney show Amphibia, is named after the genus Andrias, which (in addition to the Japanese Giant Salamander), contains the Chinese Giant Salamander (Andrias davidianus), which can grow to be up to 1.8 meters (5.9ft) long, and the extremely rare and possible extinct South China Giant Salamander (Andrias sligoi), which may exceed 1.83 meters (6ft) in length. Fittingly, King Andrias is shown to be much larger than any other newt in the show.

there are three known primary ways in which quagsire and clodsire care for their eggs. this care is usually done by large males known as "denmasters" without the females' involvement, and consists of tail-fanning, egg agitating, and hygienic filial cannibalism. bear with me for that last one.
tail-fanning is what i described earlier; wooper eggs need high levels of oxygen to develop and hatch properly, and denmasters use their keeled tails to fan the water surrounding their eggs to increase oxygen flow.
egg agitating describes a denmaster using his nose and face to move his eggs around. while the primary purpose for this is that wooper eggs also must be stirred to a certain extent to develop right, denmasters perform this behavior more often than necessary for that sole reason. thus, it's believed denmasters also do this to check for infertile, dead, or infected eggs, as well as probe for small nest predators. 'sire have poor eyesight, hence why they use their face for this task.
filial cannibalism, as you may have already guessed, is the consumption of eggs and/or offspring by the parent(s). it may seem contradictory to describe this behavior as parental care, but in 'sire, denmasters will consume dead/infertile eggs and eggs infected with aquatic fungi to prevent the spread of disease related to decomposition or infection. so, researchers dubbed this phenomenon "hygienic filial cannibalism".
parental care in the wooper line is still not fully understood. there may be other forms of care we don't know about yet, and we do not have a complete understanding of how long care lasts after the larval wooper hatch. however, this information is a good starting point, especially when combined with the fact that we know parental care continues to some degree after hatching.

Poster for Super Giant 4: Earth on the Verge of Destruction (October 8, 1957).
This is the second part of the battle between Super Giant (aka Starman) and the invading aliens, the Kaipa-Seijin (aka the Salamander Men of the Planet Kulimon).  There was a lot of action packed into this installment’s 39 minutes, including an evil space witch trying to eat a bunch of kids AND Super Giant’s battle with the super-powered ruler of the Kaipa-Seijin!
Both parts of this story were edited together (with roughly 9 minutes cut out) and released on American television as the Starman film Invaders From Space!
