this article is mostly about WB Yeats's and Isaac Newton's mysticism, which is highly relevant to my specific interests
but also, lmao, i had no idea how messy Yeats's love life was:
Yeats and his bride, née Georgie Hyde-Lees, made a strange match; he was fifty-two, she was twenty-five, and both presumably were virgins. Yeats had been obsessed throughout much of his adult life by a romantic infatuation with Maud Gonne, a charismatic beauty who zealously advocated the cause of Irish nationalism. She joined the Order of the Golden Dawn briefly, but resigned because she feared it would distract her from the Irish cause. Yeats proposed to her four times without success, though she did consent to a “spiritual marriage”; after she definitively rejected his suit in 1916, he redirected his passion toward her daughter, Iseult. It was only after Iseult refused him that Yeats proposed to Georgie.

hi hey hello I am predictably VERY interested in 1756, or 50 Years Later (absolute banger of a title btw) but I'm also curious about Second Nature!!
I'm sorry but you've picked two of the oldest/longest ones, so this is also a long response, because I've accumulated a lot of thoughts on them - and I know that if there’s anyone on earth who knows what they’re getting into by asking me to talk about ideas I have for Two & Jamie, it’s gotta be you, but I still feel the need to put a disclaimer on a post of this length lol
1756 is a multi-scene (but maybe not multi-chapter? some scenes are very brief) 6b story following Jamie after the War Games, eventually leading up to his reunion with the Doctor - the original idea was to have that take 10 years for him (and 50 from the Doctor's off-screen pov), but now I'm considering bumping it up to 15 - just to make it worse for him, not even for any good reason like lining his age up with the Two Doctors happening early in his 6b tenure or anything smart like that.
If my non-committal stance on what year it should be wasn't enough of an indicator, I'll admit now that it wouldn't be a super historical fic - while I still want it to be as accurate as possible, it’s focused around Jamie recovering his memories on his own several months after the Time Lords dropped him back off (in April 1746 - this isn't that one we've talked about where it's 1745 by mistake, much as that's been occupying a little corner of my mind lately), and having to deal with all that knowledge while being stuck living chronologically in the 18th century again for so long, without knowing if he'll ever actually see the Doctor again. So before it gets to 1756(?) and the actual reunion, it skips through the years to a bunch of short scenes, predominantly sad but for non-Jacobite/historical reasons, with the echoes of ‘real life’ going on in more of the background.
The idea originated around the same time I first started writing what became ‘Recruitment,’ and I suppose aside from the difference in POV's & amounts of time, the other reason both stories have always existed separately is that in one, Jamie doesn't have his memories, but he's left with a feeling of incompleteness and restlessness that leads him to seek out travel in whatever limited ways are available to him while still feeling he's of use to his community - but in this one, he gets his memories back relatively quickly, and then decides his best bet is to stay still and make himself as easily findable as possible in the hope that one day the Doctor will manage to successfully come back for him. I guess in some ways, this one's a response to some of the things the older Jamie in Glorious Revolution said? It does feature a bit where someone else in the village tries to convince Jamie he should marry Kirsty, for example, and it's very much a demonstration of him not being able to be satisfied building a life in the 18th century knowing what he's missing all along, but the strategy he's chosen for escaping is more desperate than wise, and a side-effect is that a life kind of builds itself up around him, as much as he tries to resist it. But he does have a house in this one! Oh, and he's got a little secret journal, because after he got his memories back he decided to write down as much as he possibly could to guard against ever forgetting again. And he's still got his old boots, which I know was just the costume dept. making due in '69, but it helps my position that the Time Lords responsible for returning him with zero future knowledge weren't all that great at their jobs, so I'm acknowledging the fact that they sent him back with shoes very much not from 1746 as canon.
(Actually I think I've told you a little bit about this one before but not explained it as much - one of the many early indicators that something's off, even before Jamie gets his memories back, is that he can remember the words to a poem he knows he can't recall learning - it's actually WB Yeats's the Wanderings of Oisin, which I headcanon him having read as part of his general practice, but also to read up on stories about the fae & get an idea of what later centuries associate with his own people, which are motives we’ve talked about before. I know I still need to do some research on how familiar he could've been with the story before that - I've definitely read about Ossianic stories published in Scotland in either the late 18th or early 19th century claiming to be authentic collected ancient tradition, but that were probably just an author trying to cash in on the romanticizing fad, so I know getting a straight answer there will require more digging than just a google search - but whether it's brand new words to an old story or a story he shouldn't know at all, it can still serve the purpose I need it to in this fic, so it'll be incorporated as an element whatever I do or don't learn. But there are some lines & concepts in that which I think fit wonderfully with the actual scenes in which he & Zoe get their memories wiped and he gets sent back to Scotland - so I like the idea of him being reminded of them while it’s all happening, and not completely forgetting them because of that, so the lines then form a kind of thread to pull on for getting more of his own memories back.)
Second Nature is.
look.
that’s my white whale if I’ve got one, but I am - maybe foolishly - convinced I will finish it eventually, it just really really has to be right before I’ll be confident enough to post any of it. I haven’t read the Human Nature novel (and looking at the size of my AU already, I kinda think I shouldn’t, because what if that gives me more ideas? I don’t need more ideas, I need to perfect the ones I’ve got) so it’s based on the tv episode, and Two’s John Smith is a history teacher at a boys’ boarding school in Britain in the early 20th century (there are some historical threads I want to pull on that the episode doesn’t, and some that it does which I’m not particularly interested in, so the exact year may shift to better suit my purposes, but I do have more research to go on that front). But aside from that it won’t be very similar - for one, the scifi plot (other than the fact that the Doctor has chameleon arched himself) disappears pretty quickly - I’m like 99% sure the Family won’t actually catch up with them in this one, I think I believe that when the Time Lords were as powerful as they were in Two’s era, they would’ve kept an eye out for creatures that feed off time energy like that & so they would’ve been bested off-screen (whether that means caught and destroyed or turned tail and ran idk yet - part of me is like, what if this story was still canon compliant with the episode? what if a fairly common occurrence in the Doctor’s life is that every so often they have to be John Smith for a bit to hide from these things and each incarnation just deals with that very differently? but that’s more just a joke I have with myself, it’s got nothing to do with the fic). Plus, if the Doctor & the Tardis are the only scifi elements, then it’s kind of a pure historical, which I also think suits the era nicely.
So really the story is more of an interpersonal drama/period piece brought about by the need for the Doctor to hide from the Family of Blood, and probably the Time Lords as well, if they’re likely to be the ones who usually show up to deal with those kinds of threats - which I think works well enough thematically too, because Two/John, Jamie, and Zoe are definitely misfits in the world they’ve landed in, and a good chunk of the story is dedicated to them having to hide who they are for their own safety. Zoe of course plays the role of an adopted daughter/ward for John Smith (a past student of his he took in when she was orphaned is the lie she comes up with to spare herself having to invent a whole life & childhood with him), and Jamie does wind up getting a job at the school as a kind of groundskeeper/general handyman, but he’s not really satisfied with his personal cover story, because he can’t understand why John thinks he moved to a new town for a new job and brought Jamie with him too, whereas it’s obvious why he’d bring his daughter.
The title’s also a pun on how they each slide into their new roles - because even though Jamie can’t stop wondering what exactly he’s supposed to be to John, John accepts his presence and their closeness easily, without having to acknowledge any particular reason or justification, and that just confuses and frustrates Jamie more. He’s grateful that it makes it easier to look after John, but he’s pretty out of his depths with the whole situation, and won’t feel totally secure until he knows why he trusts him so much, since he can’t actually remember any of the events that’ve brought them together. And of course, it’s a Two/Jamie get together fic, so eventually some feelings get revealed in somewhat un-ideal circumstances, both because of the era and the fact that they’re supposed to be keeping their heads down, but also because the Doctor isn’t really himself at all, which leaves Jamie & Zoe with some very conflicted feelings over how much they want to like the very natural relationships the last few months have forced them to fall into with John Smith, and the two lean on each other a lot as the story develops too.
I could go on and on and on about this - it’s nowhere near finished and already at something like 45k (tho a good chunk of that is alternate versions of the same few scenes, so the word count will go down before it goes up again) - but what I’ve described so far is pretty much the whole premise, so I think I should probably stop there and leave details for later (or, god help me, the fic itself whenever I actually get it done!)

I would like to know the tragic gay blur background 😔🙏
oh anon..you know not what you ask...
TL;DR — please listen to beachcoma and battery in your leg if nothing else. as gen @yeats-infection says, "I always feel like anyone invested in ambiguously gay interpersonal drama in any other band is just lightyears behind us because they will never have two songs that good"
if the following does not convince you, consider julian @dughole’s words of wisdom: “IF YOU KNOW YOU KNOW THATS IT……”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
uh okay. where to start. basically damon albarn (singer/keys/primary songwriter, the blond pretty one) and graham coxon (guitarist, brunet w/ glasses) met at school when they were 13 and 12 respectively when damon went up to graham and told him that his shoes were crap and damon's were better but they became friends cos damon had written a song with a saxophone part and graham played sax. so they were bffs throughout middle school/high school and had a shitty little band where damon sang and played keys and graham...did everything else (drums, guitar, sax, etc) and watched mike leigh films and were super obsessed with the who and quadrophenia and dreamt of becoming the next keith moon. then graham went to goldsmiths and damon went to school for acting. (here is an interview where they're being charming and discussing their childhood together.)
at goldsmiths graham met alex james (bassist, brunet w/o glasses) who was like instantly obsessed with graham because he was So Cool And Stylish And Talented And And And. while they were hanging out with damien hirst and gary hume and the rest of the soon-to-be YBAs damon dropped out of acting school after a year and moved to london to be take classes and be closer to graham and was pursuing his own musical project but eventually asked graham to be part of it and graham was like ya i know some guys (alex and dave rowntree, drummer, ginger) so they started a band which was called seymour.
(damon and alex have a weird relationship because they're both obsessed with graham and possessive of him/their respective relationships with him. so there's like a weird jealous love triangle situation alongside this tragic childhood friends to lovers to estranged enemies reunion narrative. graham was jealous of alex’s sex appeal/confidence and damon’s ambition so it was this appalling web of envy and projecting one’s insecurities onto those closest to oneself. i sincerely think that blur’s only managed to work together for as long as they have because damon, alex and dave are all in love with graham, platonically or otherwise.) (fwiw i think graham and dave also have a very close friendship that often gets overlooked but it's quite sweet and also essential to the group i think. see the second quote.)
in 1995 blur had their battle of britpop rivalry with oasis and graham tried to kill himself at the party celebrating country house getting to the #1 spot on the charts (thus “beating” oasis) but damon talked him out of it somehow. they exchanged letters in which graham said that he wanted to make music that scared people and then they made their self-titled record which was distinctly more american-sounding as that was graham’s preference and damon relinquished creative control slightly (as a result of graham’s suicide attempt? who’s to say!).
then in 1998 damon broke up with justine frischmann whom he had been very publicly dating since 1991ish and they started recording their album 13 and damon moved in with jamie hewlett who graham had introduced him to years before (cos jamie had also just broken up with his gf, jane oliver, who had dated graham before jamie and used to be in justine's band elastica—“see how close everything is?”) and the two of them started working on creating gorillaz. 13 is considered blur’s definitive breakup album cos it’s about damon and justine’s breakup but it’s also about damon and graham’s relationship deteriorating and kind of the impending breakup of blur itself. saying goodbye to that era of one’s life etc.
then when blur started working on think tank damon decided they had to kick graham out of the band cos his alcoholism was basically totally debilitating. so damon had their manager go tell graham he couldn't be in the band anymore. think tank gets released and the final song, battery in your leg, is very obviously about graham and also the only track to feature his guitar playing. another song on the record (sweet song) damon says he wrote while looking at a framed photograph of graham in his studio. so graham’s absence on the record becomes its own kind of presence ooOOoooooo!!.
so from 2002ish until 2008 graham and damon didn't talk (except for alex's wedding in 2003) but damon would like secretly attend graham's solo shows and graham would troll online forums about blur and gorillaz and they would say all these awful heartbreaking things in interviews about their broken relationship blah blah. ("maybe we liked each other too much, you know. or maybe we were too close.") (also this unbelievably un-subtle song by graham called ‘bottom bunk’. but let’s not get too tinfoil hat-y here.)
Tumblr media
then in 2008 damon and graham made up over a shared cookie on damon’s front stoop and blur did a few reunion shows for the olympics and whatnot. then graham decided he wanted to make an album out of the like 50 hours of random jams they had done while grounded in hong kong during an asian tour in like 2012/13 because he wanted to apologize for fucking up and prove to damon that they could work together again. so they released the magic whip in 2015 which has my terracotta heart on it and graham said all this bonkers insane shit about feeling like pattie harrison for having a love song written about him. also this??
so now they're all besties again and graham and damon are doing their own solo projects and alex has a cheese farm (flop) and dave is, as ever, just chillin. also graham got divorced in the past year or so and damon continues to act like an absolute nut at gorillaz shows so they're still going thru it like as people but at least they're pals once more. kind of anyway.
there are a lot of interviews where they talk about making out/"getting off" with each other and videos of them kissing each other onstage/backstage. etcetera.
i think one of the only writers to really Get blur/their dynamic is miranda sawyer who wrote an incredible article about them in 1999 that gets at the heart of what makes them so compelling.
Tumblr media
THE POINT OF ALL THIS is that sometimes you have a childhood best friend who becomes such an essential part of both how you personally see yourself in the world and how the world sees you and your success but as much as you are bound together there are fundamental elements of your personalities that are diametrically opposed and you can't keep living the life you've made together without one of you completely crashing and burning so you have to leave each other even though all you've ever known is this thing you've been building together. and sometimes after many years you are able to reconcile with one another to the extent that you can reconcile the existence of a single person whose life is so inextricably entwined with your own and who knows you better than anyone and who still loves you anyway despite how much you've fucked up. and you're both boys
Tumblr media
^that’s supposed to be a gif of damon and graham kissing onstage but it’s not working :/ also damon's mom made damon a necklace when he was a kid and when graham was in the hospital for anemia when he was 18 damon made him a copy of his own necklace to give to graham. so they had matching friendship necklaces. that's cute right
Tumblr media

What’s in a name? What might have inspired Outlander’s episode titles?
The Lake Isle of Innisfree (poem), William Butler Yeats, 1888
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet’s wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

Hi Colour! This is going to be a long one, so buckle up!
Oh wow, that's so precious! You've definitely earned the "real life Dani" nickname haha I wish I could find something meaningful like that to do with my life. I'm actually autistic and have ADHD so hearing you do this kind of work makes me really happy! Keep up the good work Ms. Clayton! 😁 Haha
You sound like a lot of fun to hang out with at pubs! Haha I'm glad you identify with that bit of info on your star placements. I had a lot of fun doing it too!
The thing about Hozier is that some of his lyrics are incredibly sapphic to me for some reason, I'm still trying to figure it out. NFWMB is one of the songs that feels like that to me. Don't know if you've heard it before but give it a try if you haven't. If you close your eyes it sounds like you're in an epic romantic story and there are swords, pretty gowns, and rooms lit by torches. Haha
The beginning of this song was inspired by a poem written by W.B Yeats called "The Second Coming" in 1920, and it talks about an apocalypse of sorts, alluding to all of the horrors men inflicted upon the world which ends up awakening this beast that goes to Jesus's place of birth in the Bible (Bethlehem) to be born. The last lines being:
"And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?"
So the song starts with:
"When I first saw you
The end was soon
To Bethlehem it slouched
And then, it must've caught a good look at you"
And oh boy do I think of Dani when I hear that. Especially bc of that scene where Viola accepts Dani's invitation to live inside her. And nobody knows why she accepts it (but I do!).
And yeah at first glance you might not think much of Dani. in the beginning she's just a tiny frail small-town girl with a lot of anxiety, running away from her past traumas. But she proves us wrong again and again and again. She moves to a country she's never been before entirely by herself, sees an opportunity, and doesn't let go of it even when it looks like it went wrong. Then is very loving and tender with these children who have gone through so much and are still going through so much. Tries to fight (with a fire poker!!) the threatening man that keeps harassing her, the children, and her friends. THEN manages to soften the angry, grumpy lesbian who's given up on people after A LOT of trauma (too much in my opinion) and doesn't give up on her when she rejects her either. Freaking exorcises her ex and makes him stop haunting her so she can be with the love of her life. And then finally as if all of that didn't make her the bravest hero in this story, she literally stops an apocalypse from happening and saves everyone from this beast by sacrificing herself without even thinking twice. Saves everyone that came before her and then the ones who'll come after for the rest of eternity. I mean the P-O-W-E-R this girl has. 💪 so hell yeah the lady in the lake wanted to take her.
When Hozier says:
"Ain't it a gentle sound, the rollin' in the graves?
Ain't it like thunder under earth, the sound it makes?
Ain't it exciting you, the rumble where you lay?
Ain't you my baby? ain't you my baby?"
I can only think of Dani at the bottom of the lake laying on top of all the bones of the people Viola killed and how she's at peace living forever in a dark place like that. That's kinda hardcore y'know?
After the first verses, Hozier goes on to talk abt his lover, someone so utterly terrifying even the beast of the end of the world can't stand to look at them. But this song is also about being proud to be this person's lover bc nothing can fuck with them, not bc you are there to protect them and wouldn't let anyone harm them, but bc they're more than capable of protecting themselves and you too. So in my head, this song is Jamie's declaration of love to Dani.
And then I think of Jamie's devotion to Dani when she said "If you can't feel anything, then I'll feel everything for the both of us." shown in this verse:
"If I was born as a blackthorn tree
I'd wanna be felled by you
Held by you
Fuel the pyre of your enemies"
And the fact that she took what she could get just to be with Dani. She knew she'd have to suffer for/bc of her at some point, but chose to be with her anyway. I have no doubts in my mind she'd want to be anything for her as long as they could be together in any way, shape, or form. In all the lives they happened to meet one another too.
Wouldn't it be cool to see them in an AU where Dani is like a medieval princess who's supposed to marry Edmund to form an alliance between kingdoms or something and Jamie is an assassin who is hired to kill the princess so she has to pretend to be Dani's personal guard or wtever but they fall in love and run away together and Jamie teaches her how to fight so Dani becomes this warrior but turns out Dani is naturally good at it and then she becomes a legend? Hahaha I can see her riding a horse in the winter with paint on her face and her blonde hair falling over this fur-lined cloak, fierce look on her face, and Jamie riding next to her (always). Then they come across Viola who's a witch and puts a curse on Dani and then Dani and Jamie have to travel to all sorts of places and fight all sorts of people and go on this whole adventure to rid Dani of this curse. Maybe Dani has to go back to her kingdom bc her father dies and there are other people trying to take her kingdom so there's a lot of angst and suffering but then they win at the end after a lot of sweat and tears and they live happily ever after! 😎Hahaha
Anyway, I hope you're having a great week so far and hope you had fun with your niece today! (I know if I was her and you had us make fudge and paint I'd worship you haha) I'm sorry for the very (very) long ask, but I've been obsessing over this idea for months and I just had to share it with someone! ✌️✨
(And you can call me Libby or wtever since I'm not anon anymore 🤗)
Awwh thank you so much for saying I have earned my 'real life Dani' title is means a lot to me that you guys see that in me!! I am sure you do so many meaningful things in life without even realising it!! I honestly just want to make a difference and I love helping people so going into a career like this just seemed so natural to me and I really do love what I do!! Thank you so much I really hope I can keep up the good work!! I hope I'm a lot of fun- I know I have helped win a few pub quizzes and there's been a few times I've won games of trivial pursuit as well so that really did make so much sense to me and learning about all the placements of my chart was so much fun and was so interesting so thank you very much!! I have heard some of Hozier's lyrics are quite sapphic and I always mean to look into more of his songs and then just never do but I will definitely look in to NFWMB because the lyrics you have sent me here are incredible and definitely give of Dani x Jamie vibes I definitely agree with you in everything you have said about why Viola accepted Dani's invitation- Dani and Viola are similar in some ways and this was something I was explaining to my niece when she watched it with me. I explained to her that both Viola and Dani are strong willed, and stubborn, and would do anything to fiercely protect the people they care about. We saw that time and time again with Dani, how within days of knowing Miles and Flora she was out with a fire poker trying to protect them from a strange man that she kept seeing around the manor. And how Viola would've done anything to protect her daughter. One major difference between them though is that Viola seemed to have a slight selfish streak where as Dani is entirely selfless, she was selfless for the longest time in even agreeing to marry Eddie so she wouldn't hurt him, she was selfless in protecting Miles and Flora, and even more selfless in saving Flora's life and freeing all the trapped spirits of Bly Manor and then she is selfless in the fact that she won't drag anyone down and won't hurt anyone else at Bly ever again. The one thing she did for herself was being with Jamie- and she was able to make Jamie open up and trust people in way she probably hadn't for the longest time. Dani is a truly strong person as was Viola and I can see why she would accept Dani's invitation. I will have to listen to this song to see it from a Jamie perspective which I will definitely do tomorrow but from the lyrics you have sent me I can definitely see it being a love declaration to Dani from Jamie. Jamie knew in the end she would suffer because she knew she wouldn't be able to keep Dani forever, and knew that one day she would have to leave her- but she knew loving Dani for as long as she was allowed to would be worth that pain in the end and Jamie is a truly strong person as well for knowing this and staying by Dani's side anyway when that must have been such a hard thing for Jamie to ever have to accept. Jamie would've been anything for Dani and would've one anything for her as Dani would've for Jamie and that's why I love them so much. They loved each other so purely and without conditions and so wholeheartedly and it really was such a lovely thing to watch play out in front of us (even if it did hurt us all at the end). I think it would be so cool to see an AU like that I think medieval stuff is always so fun and so interesting and a good enemies to lovers start never fails either because there's so much tension there between them. And Jamie being undercover as someone to get close to Dani and them slowly falling in love with each other would just be a great thing to see!! And I am all for warrior Dani and Jamie (women with weapons is a little bit of a weakness of mine)!! This whole AU just sounds incredible I love a good curse in fantasy stories and the curse slowly taking over and you thinking they're going to run out of time but everything works out in the end!! Dani going back to her kingdom because of her sick Dad dying would be great for angst because it would look
like she would have to marry someone to create an alliance and that she would have to take over a kingdom (perhaps something she never wanted to do in the first place)!! I think this could be a very angsty one shot and could be so interesting and fun and the happy ending would definitely make all the angst worth it in the end!! I am having a good week so far thank you and I had so much fun with my niece today, making fudge went great and she was happy that I was able to show her how to do it because she'd never made it before so now that's something she knows how to do (I think she thinks I'm way cooler than I actually am haha thank you for saying you'd worship me though if you were my niece haha 😂) but tomorrow she is teaching me how to do something because I taught her how to make fudge today... she's gonna teach me how to draw in an anime style- which is something she is really into and even though I'm not she loves drawing so I've asked if she can teach me since I taught her something today!! There's no need to apologise I loved this long angst and I loved this idea I think it's really great and interesting and that song just seems amazing and I am definitely gonna listen to it tomorrow when I get chance!! Thank you for sharing this idea with me I loved it!! ☺️ Haha oki doki then as long as that's alright with you Libby is what I'll call you!! Like I said you can seriously call me anything!! ☺️
