<p>Punjab vs Pune was expected to be a cracker as it was a knockout game. It had rained overnight in Pune and host won the toss and piut Punjab to bat to take advantage of the dew. At 87-2 of 12the over, match looked like in DD's hands. But Harshal patel then changed the match. He dismissed Iyer and Samuels of consecutive balls. DD never recovered there after. Though Pant and SHami tried, they lost by 10 runs. RCB finally won the match. Kohli's 58 was crucial but Harshal got mom for his wickets of consecutive balls.</p>

<p>WI had to defend 9 wickets to ensure series is drawn at 1-1. But Yasir and co had other ideas. Wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. WI tail though wagged as last 3 wickets played for 35 overs. If they had 1 over extra, match could have been drawn. Yasir completed his 5 fer with the last wicket to fall of the penultimate over of the day. Hope, Chase and Holder were key contributors for WI this season and that was a big positive. Pakistan gave perfect send off to Younis and Misbah.Pakistan test team without them looks scary. Azhar and co need to pull their socks now in future tours.</p>

Ranji final: Vidarbha vs Saurashtra - Who will be first among the equals?

After registering contrasting victories in their respective semifinals, Vidarbha and Saurashtra are now looking to carry forward the momentum. There’s very little to choose between the two teams, who have covered most bases. The last time two sides met in early January, Saurashtra, playing at home, had taken the honours with innings lead and three points. However, the final will be different game altogether. TOI brings out the SWOT analysis of the two teams…

VIDARBHA

The defending champions, after an indifferent start to the title defense, have peaked at the right time. They have posted innings win in both the quarterfinal as well as semifinal matches.

STRENGTHS Vidarbha have an allround bowling attack, which is capable of taking 20 wickets in any conditions. They have four match-winning bowlers in Umesh Yadav, Rajneesh Gurbani, Aditya Sarvate and Akshay Wakhare. They have good back up bowlers in Yash Thakur, Suniket Bingewar and Aditya Thakare. Yadav, especially, has been in red-hot form with 21 wickets in his last four innings.

WEAKNESSES Vidarbha need to address their middle-order issues. They are too reliant on Wasim Jaffer, Faiz Fazal and Akshay Wadkar. Others had the opportunity to make amends during the semifinal against Kerala but they collapsed in challenging conditions. Vidarbha need more from Ganesh Satish, Aditya Sarvate and Mohit Kale. They would be hoping a quality innings from Satish, who has a habit of performing on big stage.

OPPORTUNITIES While Vidarbha showed improvement in their fielding during the semifinal against Kerala, where slip cordon took some sharp catches, it is still a work in progress. They had dropped five catches against Uttarakhand in the quarterfinal. They were below standard in the league phase as well. They couldn’t force outright victory against Gujarat and then conceded the lead against Saurashtra due to grassed chances.

THREATS Vidarbha openers need to see off the new ball against an in-form Jaidev Unadkat, who has made the new ball count in most of the matches. The Vidarbha openers are yet to provide a substantial stand this season. While Faiz is holding one end, he needs more support. Sanjay Ramaswamy’s indifferent form has been big worry, although he scored hundred against Uttarakhand in the quarterfinal. He looked good against Kerala during his brief stay but need to raise his game. Back up opener Atharva Taide has played just four matches this season. However, he batted in the middle order in the last match against Kerala.

SAURASHTRA

A team that knows how to fight back when pushed to the corner. In both quarterfinal as well as semifinal they posted fighting come from behind wins. They are also adept at adjusting to different conditions. Both their knockout wins came in away matches

STRENGTHS Saurashtra’s biggest strength is their combination. They have plenty of bowling options and they bat deep. They have clicked as a unit throughout the season and that’s the reason they are in the final. While Saurashtra batsmen have collectively scored only eight hundreds, they have 33 fifties in comparison to Vidarbha’s 19. Five of their batsmen, including Jaidev Shah who has declared retirement, have more than 400 runs this season. They don’t rely too much on Cheteshwar Pujara, who joined them after the league phase.

WEAKNESSES They are too reliant on Jaidev Unadkat and Dharmendra Jadeja to take wickets. Unlike Vidarbha bowlers who have shared wickets, Unadkat and Jadeja have picked bulk of wickets for Saurashtra. Young Chetan Sakariya has done well in his debut First Class season but allrounders Kamlesh Makwana and Prerak Mankad need to do more.

OPPORTUNITIES Saurashtra youngsters Harvik Desai, Snell Patel, Arpit Vasavada, Vishvaraj Singh Jadeja and Prerak Mankad have a good opportunity to score big ones. While they have made some useful contributions in crunch situations, the big one has still eluded them. They need to come out of Pujara and Jackson’s shadow.

THREATS Saurashtra have lost two major finals — Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare One-day — in the last four years. Somehow they choked in key moments. There match temperament in big match will hold the key. They have come up very well in the last four years under coach Sitanshu Kotak. A title this time will take them to another level.

Colombo: Kusal Perera’s brilliant 66 off 37 balls and some crucial contributions from the middle-order helped Sri Lanka beat India by five wickets in the opening match of the Nidahas Trophy Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket tri-series here on Tuesday. After the Indian batsmen put up a decent target of 175, their bowlers failed to make a mark as the hosts hammered the bowlers all around the park. Spinners Yuzvendra Chahal (2/37) and Washington Sundar (2/28) provided the crucial breakthroughs to control the run-flow. Towards the end, Dasun Shanaka (15 not out) and Thisara Perera (22 not out) played sensibly and helped their team clinch the issue. Chasing 175, Sri Lanka got off to a bad start, losing opener Kusal Mendis (11) in the second over of the innings. But Danushka Gunathilaka (19) and in-form Perera forged a crucial 58-runs partnership which saw some brilliant strokeplay. Just when things seemed good in the middle, Gunathilaka was dismissed by pacer Jaidev Unadkat in the fifth over when scoreboard was reading 70/2. Unperturbed by the fall of wicket, Perera kept on punishing the Indian bowlers with incoming batsman Dinesh Chandimal (14). In the ninth over, Chandimal was sent packing by leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Soon, Perera was dismissed by spinner Washington Sundar to bring India back into the game. Upul Tharanga (17) also failed to utilise the start he got and was bowled by Chahal. Now with the scoreboard reading 136/5, Shanaka and Perera waited for the bad balls and rotated the strike. Towards the end, Indian bowlers felt the pressure and leaked the runs — and as a result, India lost the issue. Earlier, opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan cracked 90 off 49 deliveries to drive India to 174 for five. The left-hander struck six fours and equal number of sixes, while scoring his fifth T20I fifty as he shared a crucial 95-run third-wicket stand with Manish Pandey (37 off 35) to take the visitors to a strong total. The pair of Dhawan and Pandey had joined hands after India were 9/2, following the dismissals of Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina. After the hosts asked India to bat, Jeevan Mendis took a sharp running catch from mid-off to dismiss Rohit Sharma (0) in the fourth delivery of the first over bowled by paceman Dushmantha Chameera. Left-hander Raina (1) exposed his stumps, allowing himself room to hit paceman Nuwan Pradeep but the Indian failed, with the ball rattling his stumps. Then Dhawan and Pandey began India’s innings construction. While Dhawan was aggressive against the Sri Lankan pacers who were throwing bouncers, Pandey was resolute, trying to find singles and twos and odd boundries. Two of Dhawan’s sixes came off top-edges over the keeper on the bouncers delivered by Pradeep. He was good on the off-side too, cutting and driving with aplomb. Pandey struggled with his big shots and ine one desperate attempt which saw him drag leg-spinner Mendis to the hands of Danushka Gunathilaka at deep mid-wicket. Dhawan, however, continued, his assault, hitting two sixes against Chameera. Leg-spinner Akila Dhananjay and off-spinner Gunathilaka also faced his ire. Sandeep Sharma has been RCB's nemesis quite a few times in last 4 years. It continued. He grabbed Gayle for duck in firt over. He castled Kohli though it was a reckless shot from the RCB captain. But big wicket w as that of ABD. After hitting for a four and six, he counter attacked. But Sandeep managed to get the edge. RCb were erduced to 37-3. Though Mandep fought hard, wickets kept falling. Axar Patel then dismissed Watson and lower middle oorder. Axar and Sandeep picked 3 wickets each in 19 wicket win for Punjab. That final of Watson haunted Kohli. Kohli didnt know what to say in post match conference. This has been spineless RCB this season. Big fihes have not stood up even in one match in batting so far. Punjab kept theit hopes of reaching knockouts well and truly alive. At 12 points they are just 1 pt behind SRH with an extra game in hand.

SRH were on the backfoot after losing to DD. Pune lost openers early on. SMith and Stokes then stabilised things but run rate was pretty horrible.. They just managed 51 runs of first 100 overs. SMith didnt hit any boundaries in his 30+ innings. Stokes 25 ball 39 kept things on the up swing atleast. Dhoni counter attacked Bhuvi which was critical in Pune reaching 148. Bhuvi has been predictable in last 2 matches. he needs to start varying his pace. His wide yorkers and on the stump yorkers have been predicatble. 149 was just about par score. SRH have won all games so far when top 3 (Warner, Dhawan and Williamson ) fired. Stokes had a brilliant initial spell as he grabbed Dhawan and Williamson in single over. SRHh were 29-3 at this stage. Yuvi and Warner had a 50 plus stand. Warner was taking SRh closer to the target. Stokes was brought back and he dismissed Warner which changed things. Yuvi kept it going. SRH middle and lower middle order has always been weak and they were tested today. Yuvi and Ojha were in good control when 17th over started. 41 was needed of 4 overs with 6 wickets in hand. What happened after that shocked SRH. Unadkat dismissed Yuvi and Ojha in 17th over. Bipul took the match to last over when 13 was needed. Unadkat picked up hatrick in final over. It was a maiden hatrick over when match was on the line. Brilliant stuff. Pune are on a roll as they move now to sole second spot. SRH need to now win remaining 2 games. If match against RCB had not been washed out, probably they would have needed just 1 win. Will that cost them?? I guess its time t get Mustafizur back in place of Henriques.

DD were dismissed for 66. DD are out of contention now. MI are almost 1 step inside top 2 contenders. They have achieved this with 3 more matches to play. Thats stagerring. They have won matches from all positions this season. With current form, it looks like it would be all Maratha finals this year?? only time will tell whether that would be the case.
