I feel like Zorro in this...Excellent. - IMMERSIVE THEATRE STUFF: I saw the Eve Of St. George in Kitchener on Halloween, a retelling of the Dracula story by @transcendanceproject via dance and immersive theatre. For those unaware of immersive theatre: things happen around you, on multiple floors, and with varying amounts of interaction from the cast. This isn’t LARP, though I feel like they’re distantly related. It’s high level performers with moments of improv and fourth wall breaking. Basically my jam. I missed their initial run in Toronto in January, due to my move and general life chaos. I was incredibly frustrated by remembering they were running...on the last day, about when their last event ended. 😰 When I saw they were doing an abridged version in Kitchener I jumped on it. The inspiration from #SleepNoMore in New York is obvious, but that doesn’t make it derivative. As another inspired immersive-maker, I appreciate what I see them using and building on. The story, though I’m assuming abridged from its original telling in Toronto, was clearly portrayed, and the dancing was phenomenal. Use of the space was wonderful, and I especially appreciated being able to see several levels at once. The lighting added to the experience, in varying levels of red and blue. I would have loved a longer show, and it just makes me more upset that I missed the one in Toronto. Looking forward to their next production in the spring. Immersivity...I just made that word up

Wasn’t quite sure what to post about tonight so I scrolled through my photo gallery, and this was the first image that popped up! I’m glad it did. It reminds me of another hobby I’ve recently picked up thanks to my one friend-immersive theater. Over the past year and a half my very creative friend has written and directed small immersive theater shows that I was lucky enough to act in. They both took place at an arts truck festival in New York and both were quite the experience. They were tiring and hard work but sparked a side of me that I had forgotten about. I used to love acting, and though I’m no professional, it’s something I find to be a lot of fun. 

While looking through instagram a few days ago, I came across this painting, by one of my favorite modern artists. So naturally I took a screenshot. It made me think of an immersive theater idea: what if all the actors in the show were to be in this very setting, and they were all painted the same way the art piece is. The actors could then take the audience members through the theater experience, and they would also become part of the painting. It could be sort of a trippy experience, with different lights and smells and sounds. I ran this by my friend and he even suggested having other rooms that were black and white as a color contrast, which sounds visually stunning.

Since I’ve participated in a couple of these shows, I’ve had ideas that have sometimes crossed my mind about shows to write etc. Of course, with my mindset as of late, I didn’t really do much about these ideas except to allow them to be fleeting and forgotten about. I’ve struggled with the concept of art recently because I find that when I take part in a creative outlet, it seems to have no purpose. It seems to be a selfish act; one which I shouldn’t involve myself in and instead do something more productive with my time. (Which is completely hypocritical anyway since what I do instead is just obsessively comb through facebook or instagram.) I’m a perfectionist in the worst way-I give up before I start something because I’m afraid I won’t like it or it won’t turn out right or it will be a “waste of time.” I didn’t used to be like that. I’m going to put a stop to it. And this will be one of the ways. 

I am looking forward to posting more ideas about immersive shows on here. Hopefully I’ll get some feedback or collaboration on them! But if not, at least I’m getting my creative juices flowing. That surely counts for something.

NOIRTOWN, the newest experience from immersive theater company WITNESS, opens August 9th as part of the Ken Davenport-produced Rave Theater Festival for five performances only.

A fully immersive promenade-style experience, NOIRTOWN plunges audiences into the shadowy and seductive world of film noir, where private eyes and femme fatales mingle in the dark corners of the city by night. Three radically different detectives take three radically different cases, all of which seem to be linked by the same enigmatic woman. As they each try to get to the bottom of their own mystery, more questions than answers are unearthed... Audiences are invited to follow their own detective instincts, and will be free to roam throughout the space and follow whichever characters and threads they please.

The cast features Nik Duggan, Daniel Harray (Orange is the New Black), Shane Jensen (Sleep No More), Kendall Kemp, Chelsey Ng (Sleep No More), and Stephanie Salgado. NOIRTOWN is written by Michael Bontatibus and directed by Charlotte Murray.
