Rosé sucked in a breath as Denali shifted closer in his sleep, involuntarily reaching out for Rosé’s warmth. He considered moving away but he couldn’t stand the thought of waking Denali and seeing the hurt expression on his face.

He hasn’t meant to let Denali stay so long but Denali had all but begged him to let him stay. There was no way he could fall asleep himself, but he stayed and watched Denali breathe, counting his breaths and the steady rise and fall of his chest. Denali looked so peaceful as he slept, it almost reminded Rosé of when they were together, when everything was fresh and new and they were so in love. He remembered watching Denali as he slept back then and imagining what their future would hold, marriage, kids, growing old together, he wanted the whole nine yards with Denali. Panic choked him at the thought.

This can’t go on any longer, he thought to himself.

He hated doing it but he gently shook Denali awake.

“Huh, wha-? Is it morning?” Denali said, blinking up sleepily at him.

“No, no, it’s still late. I just- I think you should go.”

Denali was more awake now, sitting up, brows furrowed together as he checked the time on his phone. “It’s 3am, can’t I just sleep? It’s so late and I-I don’t feel safe leaving this late. I’ll go sleep on the couch if you want me to.”

“It would be better if you stayed away from me.”

Anger flashed across Denali’s face. “Oh so you’re going to pin this on me? Like I can’t stay away from you, like you’re not the one texting me in the middle of the night whenever we’re near each other!”

Truth be told, it was both of them. No matter how hard they tried they always seemed to end up in each other’s orbit. If only they had ended up in the same city this much when they were together, maybe they could’ve saved their relationship, but even now there was too much anger, too much left unsaid for them to save themselves.

“Denali, I don’t want to fight. I just think it’s best for the both of us if you go, I’ll get you an Uber and walk you out so I can make sure you get in your car okay.”

Denali scoffed, climbing out of bed and pulling his sweatpants back on, Rosé hated that he noticed that they were once his and that they used to fit Denali a lot better, staying up on their own instead of forcing him to pull the strings tight just keep them from falling. “I don’t need you to do any of that. If I’m not wanted then I’m not going to force you to make sure I’m safe.”

“Come on,” Rosé sighed, standing up after him, “don’t be like that, just-“

“No! You don’t get to say that. I’ll order myself a goddamn Uber and it’s none of your business whether I make it back to my hotel or not!”

“Okay, fine,” Rosé said, waving his white flag, “do as you please but don’t say I didn’t try.”

Denali laughed in disbelief. “Fuck you. I don’t even know what to say other than-just, just fuck you.”

He grabbed the rest of his things and left, slamming the front door behind him, making Rosé wonder if it would be the last time he’d ever see him. There was a part of him that hoped for both of their sakes that it would be, but the weakness for Denali that nestled it’s way inside him forever ago told him that it was unlikely, that the next time they were near each other both of their resolves would break and they’d end up in bed together yet again.
