ok so this was originally going to be a small sketch that I just so happened to colour in to practice my new style which I just so happened to do the lighting for which I so happened to try out some collage stuff and-oops my hand slipped

{Artists Note}:

I was thinking about Eiki and then I realized that I still haven't drawn her in my style yet so here we are. For some reason, Eiki has always reminded me of Kurapika from HxH for some reason, so I guess some of that inspo slipped into how I drew her face. If I get a better idea for how I want to draw it in the future I'll redraw her face like I did with Zanmu and kind of Keiki (I need to draw her again because I miss drawing her and I still need to figure out how to draw her design).

I also wanted to play around with some collage elements in this piece, (also I am just realizing now that the flowers on the picture frame didn't align themselves properly but you know what who cares I'm too tired to fix it now) so I mashed together two different picture frames I found on google, found some 1800s botanical drawings and the rest is history. I went with a flower theme because PoFV had a whole thing with flowers going on, so why not.

The whole idea I had with the portrait frames came from when I drew in her little ribbons on her hat and they formed a nice little compositional thingy so yeah there ya go. Also, her hat ribbons were a nightmare to figure out, again, if I redraw Eiki in the future I'll have to figure that out.

So yeah that's basically all I have to say about this one, don't know how to end this off so uhhh.... If there were a manga about Hell in Touhou and it was a political drama I'd read it, not because I like political dramas but because the concept of it is so fucking cool to me oki byeeeeeee

First of all, I want to tell you that I love your drawings and they are great! Really well done and it makes us want to love the Leopika or the pariston/ging even more! 😊❤️ You inspire me a lot and I'd also like to draw people from Hunter x Hunter but especially the phantom troupe that I particularly appreciate.

The problem is that I can't find my style, or draw exactly what I have in my heading. So I was thinking that maybe a pro like you had some tips/advice for drawing 😅😥🙏

Did you learn how to do proportions before drawing and with what? Do you use references? (I do, but it limits me a lot on my ideas as I don't necessarily find references that reach what I have in mind 😞)

How did you learn to do sketches so easily? How did you find your own style?

I’ll be honest, im not the best at giving art advice. although I’m still in the process of improving my art, I can tell you how I’ve been developing my style.

I like looking and analyzing my interests that have unique art styles. For example, I see togashi’s style in hxh and what I’ve gathered based on his work is how he ranges from some simplicity to a more very detailed style. For me, I love his simplistic style a lot more. and that makes me want to develop my style that is more cartoon centric, if that makes sense. So see what art styles intrigues you the most, study it, copy it (which is valid for beginner artists imo, but don’t claim it as your own art‼️), then forget about the copying method and practice it, and overall, just have fun with it.

despite achieving my cartoony style that im used to having, I still try to make the proportions in my art look decent. I’ll be honest, I still need some practice on it. sorry if this sounds vague, but I use a lot of shapes and lines to figure out the proportions (ex. For the head, I start off with a circle and a horizontal line at the center of it, and change the height of the line depending on where you want the eyes to be at) I wish I could show you some examples for this part but I don’t have my ipad with me right now. :,) one of my other ways of practicing proportions are redrawing official art from my favorite interests. it’s honestly a fun way for me to improve on drawing proportions. but if I want to draw a character in any pose of my choice, I look up references on Pinterest. I know this method is pretty much common and im sorry about that :,)

for sketches tho, sometimes, i do tend to struggle on sketching as well :,) if its something im used to drawing all the time tho (example: kurapika) then it isnt as hard to sketch easily.

overall, those are my ways and methods in developing my art. sorry this took me days to reply back, i wanted to try to answer all your questions as best as i can. lemme know if i need to be more clear on certain parts :,D

something @pacificpikachu said got me on a train of thought that led to this, but i wanted to sort of sketch this idea out: mariya ise’s confident and casual, immediate confirmation that killua is in love with gon is surprising in one way, but in another, to me, it’s not surprising at all.

hunter x hunter has always been very different from other shonen with queer stuff.

think about how niuya was posting her killugon ship art on twitter openly during production and faced no consequences. the staff has always been open about “shipping” them. it’s no a coincidence. there’s literally a drama cd from 1999 of leopika called moody restaurant that’s literally just leorio and kurapika fucking while roleplaying as a waiter and customer at a restaurant. that’s real.

there’s a huge difference in staff/official attitude toward all of it from something like........ sorry im just trying to think of a random example here not trying to shit on anyone. idk narusasu or something like that. you know? it’s really openly noooot the same thing

and another thing iseven aside from the fact that’s always had lgbt characters in his work, togashi has been open about being a fudanshi since the early 90s, people just didn’t talk about it then. he first cited patalliro as an influence in an author’s note about yyh. he’s cited mineo maya. mineo maya was one of the only male BL authors from the first wave of shoujo BL back in the 1970s. like togashi, he is now happily married and has a biological daughter, but he frequently expresses himself through drag and takes photos, and is open about how much he enjoys exploring gay love and gender nonconformity through fiction. he doesn’t identify as gay, but he sure as fuck isn’t cishet!!

like togashi has always been open about the impression maya’s work made on him and it confuses and shocks western fans because of the cultural difference. western fans approach hxh from a very post-2010s queer rep perspective. but togashi has never included queer characters out of the western conception of representation. he has always included them because he likes writing queer characters and he wants to. that’s it.

and once you realize that, you also realize how a character like hisoka and killua can coexist. if you think that the only reason a writer would include a queer character would be to perform A Social Good, it makes no sense that you can have a character like hisoka, who some fans see as reinforcing negative stereotypes, and this hugely empowering and affirming character like killua at the same time. the answer is simply that togashi wasn’t thinking about only creating positive queer characters when he wrote hisoka, because he wasn’t doing it as a social good or as a chore. he is influenced by old BL and he writes queer men into his work because he likes writing them. that’s it.

god. big fucking rambling post. i guess my point is that hxh has always been an openly queer series and it just doesn’t go about it the same way we expect openly queer series to do today.

end of the year thoughts

Hello!

I swear I made another blog post recently but it looks like the last one I made was at the end of march phew. Anyways, I hope everyone’s been having a stress-free holiday season, enjoying themselves and hanging in there.

I’ve included a longer version below so that I don’t take up too much space on people’s dashboards (or TL? what do we call the feed on tumblr nowadays?) but the short of it all is that my wrist pain has improved significantly since my last post, I’m going to work on opening a patreon and doing a lot of art projects in the coming future!

I figure I should make a little update related to my last post (wrist pain/pinched nerve) I’m still waiting to see a doctor for a full evaluation LOL but I did manage to buy a secondhand cintiq, shoutout to the guy on FB marketplace who didn’t scam me, it’s been amazing to draw with and has seriously helped alleviate a majority of the pain in my wrist/hand. I’m honestly having so much fun drawing with it I can’t believe I deprived myself of this for so many years LOL. I’m still working on taking adequate breaks/rest periods and strengthening my wrist which I also think played a huge part in my recovery. Anyways, I definitely feel more confident in taking on work now that I can draw for more than an hour without pain or even just the mental energy drain being in pain causes, yay!!!

Soo with that being said I am going to be working really hard on new art, I have a lot of projects I want to do in the future. Primarily a lot of OC stuff but a few fandom related things as well. I had a dream once that I spent 300$ in gachaphon trying to get every single catboy kurapika merch so I think this is a sign that I have to make a lot of catboy kurapika merch. I also want to make some batman related stuff and experiment with some new product types 🥺 definitely want to participate in some more conventions, I never made a post reflecting on my time at Sakuracon and AX but I had an amazing experience at both (as good as it can be during the panini). If you came by and said hi or bought anything from me during these times thank you so much!!!! It was really nice to talk to people who enjoy my art or chat about fandom stuff 😳

Other than merch and fandom related products I think I also want to finally get my patreon up and running, though it will be very low stakes (one tier for the foreseeable future). I’ve definitely gone back and forth on this since I have a big fear about letting people down. It’ll most likely be used for posting up sketches, WIPs, I might ask for feedback on what I should draw next or give art feedback if requested? I’m not the most skilled artist but I think I’m capable of a suggestion or two :^)!! And yes the whole twitter thing has definitely contributed towards me trying to make a serious attempt at patreon again...

The last thing I wanna say is thaaatt I am going back to art school to hopefully get my BFA, I’m halfway there, yay!! I really hope to learn new techniques/skills and improve a lot, even just typing this out is giving me a lot of excitement for the future haha.

I think that’s all I wanted to touch on without rambling on for TOO long LOL. Thank you for taking the time to read through this!

hxh 60’s au??

Ive always wanted to combine my two biggest comforts: hxh and the 60s.

I speculate that, due to his androgynous designs, Kurapika would definitely have a style resembling celebrities like Janis Joplin (Or maybe I am just biased because I love Janis.) Tunics and flowy pants made of silk or even velvet, embroidered vests, dainty layered jewelry, rings, and flats/occasionally clogs. This is a very random sketch but I just wanted to try it out. The feminist movements in the 60s opened up minds to more androgynous fashion and I just personally thought Kurapika would suit it alot.

Perhaps when I finally find the energy to get out procreate, I will redo this with and color palette and more detail.

What do you think is going on? Obviously 391 will be Clash Part 2 but from what I can gather from chapters 397-399, there’s been a tree, an angry crowd, (possibly) enclosed weapons, a toy box (not Hisoka’s since they’re animal toys and not character toys), less speech bubbles than usual and a couple of character models. I’m guessing it’s a fight but idk.

Togashi is king of giving us zero info from the sketches i love him so much. At first i thought black whale finally sank judging from the forest sketches (also i think it would be funny if clash part 1 and 2 are about how the people responsible for such big thing as sinking of the ship are prob the least important characters so far) but since then the sketches are too geometrical?

I have no clue who the character from these past few days is there is too many options. Sadly i don't think it's leorio because my sketch style is kinda similar to togashi and when sketching leorio you just wouldnt use round shape for head. I like the idea it's pariston, it could be kurapika too. Yesterday i went to reddit out of curiosity to check what they think and those losers believe it's fight between bono and hisoka and just no lmao. I don't think it has to be fight to me it seems like a character searching for something while explaining stuff and it's dynamic because either something is following them or some other shit is happening.

So one story line that kinda makes sense to me is that the black whale reached the not-dark continent or the place for refuel and pariston is trying to get to beyond?

But also there is panel that kinda looks like coffins? Not the princes' ones but it also can be some decor or some nen symbols.
