4 Future Funk Releases Deserving of a Vinyl Press

As 2020 looms, I inevitably start thinking about filing for tax returns. Maybe that’s a symbol of the rote, misery-inducing modernity of twenty-first-century life — but I’m trying to take it as a positive this year. Getting some cash back from the Internal Revenue Service means more disposable income to drop on vinyl. While I’ll be spending quite a bit more on Japanese ambient wax this year, I’ll be ear-marking a fair share to go into vaporwave and future funk releases.

With the platform that I have currently, it’s now a definite responsibility to identify some gems that deserve a label to step up and put together a killer release on wax. With the social reach that I’ve gotten in just two months of somewhat milquetoast long-form reviews, it’s honestly a bit insane — but I’m also insanely thankful. I certainly wasn’t expecting over 400 followers from Japan when I’m publishing in English, so — ありがとうございました!

Hi-fi appreciation tends to cross artificial barriers of language and nationality.

Over the past five days I’ve compiled a pretty exhaustive list of 100 digital-only and digital/cassette releases that I’ve streamed the most over the past year. To suss out which releases sounded best for hi-fi consumption, I decided to test them on my two Christmas gifts this holiday — A Cambridge Audio 851N network streamer/pre-amp and a pair of new “anniversary” JBL 4312 Mk2 speakers powered by my vintage H/K 700 series Amp. While most of the list slapped on this new kit, there were four releases that I felt were truly deserving of getting a wax treatment in 2020. These are, in effect, the ones I’d be a guaranteed buyer of. Here they are:

Marsy + HER by Marsy

Admittedly, I stumbled on Marsy’s work just by scrolling through the list of releases through Bogus Collective, which over the course of 2019 has rocketed to the top of my list of favorite digital labels for discovering new artists. While this is of course a fine way to discover an artist — I’m stunned that I didn’t first encounter Marsy’s work on the two most visible channels for future funk discovery and appreciation — Artzie & Real Love Music. Unfortunately Real Love and Artzie haven’t been keeping up with their releases, with the most recent video on youtube from either curator dating back to November 2018. While I do get a deja vu feeling with Marsy — as in, I must have seen them on these platforms before -- perhaps with actually being cognizant, an artist of this caliber should be all over those channels on a basis at least roughly corresponding with their releases.

Do better, fellas!

Marsy’s most recent work is an absolute banger with one of the widest mixes I’ve listened to this year. The JBLs absolutely ate up the rich bass and low-range in most of Marsy’s tracks, and for a moment I had to ask myself how this release was sitting around as a digital-only. This is just one of those funky profiles made for vinyl. That being said, 7 tracks seems a bit light for a twelve-inch LP, so if I was advising a label (happy to do this pro-bono!) I’d maybe pair this album with another robust, high-energy release from Marsy: 2018’s 5-track Her EP, which coincidentally has one of my favorite individual future funk tracks (愛のFantasy) and absolutely brilliant cover art.

 Star Virgin -- サクラSAKURA-LEE 

I’m going to go on a soapbox for a moment here: I don’t like Qrates. I’ve bought from Qrates campaigns before and often find their wax brittle and their presses tinny. Now, there are a whole host of reasons why this could be the case — vinyl necessitates a much longer production line — and this inevitably creates errors. But these errors should be corrected by someone in a quality control department. And if you talk to any of the major labels, relationships with QC/QA people are some of the most essential recipes to a good physical release. This is in effect the primary function of a physical-oriented underground label: ensuring a proper quality press by ordering tests, and keeping limited back stock in case there’s some kind of slip-up. Qrates campaigns don’t offer this in sufficient degrees — and as a result makes a lot of potential buyers feel insecure.

This all said, Sakura-Lee’s unsuccessful Qrates campaign shouldn’t be seen as a lack of desire to support a proper wax release of their iconic Star Virgin release — I genuinely think it’s regarding people’s reservations about dropping $30 or more for vinyl of potentially mediocre quality. Ultimately, this is where labels should step in, build up some buzz, and provide a modicum of quality assurance to truly finalize that sale. I’ve talked to a lot of audiophiles who would love the hear tracks like The Sweet Escape and Feelings with the warmth of vinyl. Sakura-Lee’s sound is so unique and so well-suited to the format. As an owner of the Star Virgin minidisc, I can certainly attest to the quality of that release and the great sound it’s produced on my hi-fi. But minidisc is cold. Crisp, but cold. Star Virgin is musical joie de vivre -- it has all the energy of life itself, and contrasts with the almost archival and clinical nature of the minidisc format. In my view, there’s no doubt that with the right master and press, this would produce an otherworldly sound worthy of its title once it finds its way onto wax -- hopefully in 2020!

Kween Pepsi -- Jesse Cassettes 

Latin future funk is the warmest of all future funk. This is partially because us Latins (your humble reviewer is named Sebastião, after all) are the warmest people in all the world. It stands to reason then, that vinyl, music’s warmest medium — is a natural fit for for the funkiest of all music. I first discovered Jesse Casettes on the Eternal Vibes compilation, which is a compilation full of warm, Latin sounds and Jesse Cassette’s contribution to it was my absolute favorite. I’ve been a huge fan of their work ever since. 

Kween Pepsi is a masterwork that toys with a good speaker’s treble response like nothing else I’ve listened to. Only a few future funk artists can reach this level of playfulness on the high end — Night Tempo, Cosmic Bae, and a few others. But almost none sound quite as fun as Jesse Casettes, and none sound as polished and well-mixed. Kween Pepsi hits you with banger after banger, and the Seikomart tape was already a commercial success. It stands to reason that Kween Pepsi could get a nice master and fly off the market, giving audiophiles another grail on vinyl that stands out as one of the genre’s finest albums of the decade. Bringing it into the next with a new physical seems like a great idea. What DJ wouldn’t want to drop the needle on a track as well arranged and layered Osaka Fall Season Nights and let their system shine?

Miss — Flammy

Real Love beat me to the punch very recently by featuring Flammy on their channel, but Flammy is still an under-appreciated artist that I’m hoping to see 2020 herald big things for. I’ve always appreciated their deeply creative sampling, and their mixes consistently sound rich and full on every hi-fi system I play them on. I happened upon “I bet my girlfriend is chinese and aesthetic” (a title very real for me as my girlfriend is both chinese and aesthetic) back in early 2018 and was instantly impressed on how it made my KEFs absolutely werk in spite of my stodgy old British floor-standers never receiving vaportrap/future hop with very much vigor.

After kind of losing track in the waves of new releases over the past year or so, I re-discovered their work this month after Miss released, and their mixes, creative micro-sampling (City Hunter, anyone?) have been just as rich and rewarding to both my system and my ears as on that initial listen. As I said earlier, I genuinely think this Lille, France-based artist is on the verge of a blowup, and when that happens I want to make sure my childish ranting of “I want this on vinyl!” is heard sufficiently by whatever label steps up to the plate. My suggestion: maybe get this EP on a 10-inch.

Cyri – Paris

A brand new album from an artist with a distinctive creative approach.

Cyri has just released “Paris”, a rich and unadulterated rap album. This release is a collection of great songs, each blurring the lines between different influences and exploring different creative outlooks from this amazing artist. There is nothing quite like a rap album that has a truly eclectic edge, and in Cyri’s case, he definitely managed to accomplish a diverse, engaging record.

More importantly, his vocal flow is distinctive and emotional. Some artists aim to solely entertain their audience. Others, on the other hand, are all about

The first song “Reaper” is a multi-layered soundscape with a kaleidoscopic intro. Just when you start immersing yourself in the complex arrangement, Cryi’s raw and edgy vocals cut through the noise. It’s a strong start to “Paris” and the highs just keep on coming.

“Tripping” starts off with a female vocalist and gentle piano notes with a vintage overtone. This is also interspersed with spoken word and pitch-shifted vocal patterns. The vibe of “Tripping” is reminiscent of classic R&B artists such as Frank Ocean and Kendrick Lamar, to mention but a few. This song is definitely one of the catchiest tracks on the whole album, and I really love how the vocal melodies seamlessly blend in with the rest of the track.

“Need U Back” is one of the most impressive songs on the record. It highlights the sophisticated production aesthetic of the entire album. There is also a fat low end in the mix that highlights the artists’ gritty vocal performance. Although this quality production work is always present in “Paris” it shines through on “Need U Back.” This is definitely one of the album tracks that truly pushes the warmth to the next level!

Cyri changes the tone of the album with the track “VHS Interlude.” This is an upbeat and catchy song that has an engaging lyrical composition. This is a dense track, with a lush, textural sound, that’s also quite catchy.

Following up, the artist explores the feelings of anxiety when you believe you’re going to lose the one you love. It’s relevant and universal subject matter makes “Love Song” one of the most enjoyable tracks on the album!

One of the standout songs on “Paris” is “Headspace”. The unique rhythm in this number echoes iconic rap artists such as Mac Miller and Drake. However, Cyri brings a fresh and creative approach to the track by interlaying “Headspace” with a diverse variety of instrumentals and vocal recordings.

“Time” is a deeply cinematic song that is rich with imagery. The repetition of “Let’s just keep on running” in this song will stay in your mind long after the track is over. “Time” has one of the funkiest beats on the record and it clearly evokes a classic R&B sound.

Although it’s a short number, “Left Me” has a distinctive and engaging lyrical flow. At just 28 seconds, it will definitely leave you wanting more. Because of the intensity and time-length of “Left Me,” it ended up being one of the most memorable tunes on “Paris”!

The last song on the album, “Loner”, takes the music in a different direction. There is a distinct emo pop overtone to the song, while Cyri still sticks to his hip-hop roots. It’s an interesting song that blurs the lines between different genres and shows off Cyri's eclectic influences.

Ultimately, what I really love about this release is the style of the production. The sound of this project makes me think of the work of many modern influencers - including XXXTENTACION, Lil Peep, and Mac Miller, only to mention but a few. The sheer combination of melodic textures, soothing atmospheres, and gritty trap-inspired beats is truly astonishing, giving this release a distinctive feel. On top of it all, Cyri’s unique vocal flow is absolutely outstanding. What’s really amazing about his delivery is that it’s so incredibly versatile. His vocals are melodic, yet soaring and energetic, making for a really unique and charismatic flow.

If you are a fan of great hip-hop with a modern twist, do not miss out on this release and keep this artist under your radar!

I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and organic. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?

Answer: The beat comes first because I can’t lay something down if I don’t have a good composition behind me, that I can turn into something special.

Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?

Answer: Not currently, no. I want to make shows people remember. I want to make the stages I perform on become living artworks when my songs come on, once I have the proper resources.

If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?

Answer: It always changes, at the moment I feel “Love Song” would be the best. It's relatable, and it's fun, but at the same time it's true! Who doesn’t want a love like they sing in a love song? Listening to songs like Differences by Ginuwine or a song like Lucid Dreams by Juice Wrld, these songs take that raw love you have for someone and put it into something that others can actually feel and not just bump.

What does it take to be “innovative” in music?

Answer: Take from your surroundings, and acknowledge that you’re transcribing everything into how you make your work. It helps to be like “oh, this is the song that inspired me. Let me try to make a track like that, but go ahead and put my own spin on it” and then you can keep building on that and look at the next song like how can I do better than I did, or how can be better than the person I’m listening to right now.

Answer: New songs are in the works.

  The Review

From The Website: Featuring ladder prints all over, these are completely original. Another winner from Henry Holland, get yours now before they sell out! Henry Holland is known for his cool and quirky prints and ideas, the ladders tights are no exception. Combining a sheer tight with ladder prints all over, these are unlike anything you will have seen before.

  The Packaging: these come in a small slim box. The model wears them on the front along with the brand name. The back has very generic details about the brand, the sizing guide and hosiery care.

When you get in, you find this cute set of instructions before you get to the hosiery. I think that is such a good idea for those who are new to hosiery or need a bit of guidance from time to time.

Once you get in, you will find these flat folded and wrapped around card.

  On The Legs: my oh my! The matting on this is so nice; I love it when there is hardly any shine to them so you get this pure smooth effect on the legs. Plus is helps to create the illusion of slimmer and toned legs too!

The design has got to be one of my favourite playful ones; it’s so random and I love it. I mean who would think of putting ladders on tights? It’s such a twist on the actual laddered tights – I’m actually giggling here!

The fit of these are great; they have plenty of elasticity in them being a ‘one size’ pair, so you will get a snug fit no matter what size you are. The feel of them are so smooth, but also the type to easy snag. The quality of them aren’t as great as it might look so do be careful.

Now one little mention is my bottom right picture, where I got those weird markings again. I actually took my time rolling them up and not tugging as I didn’t need to, and these were peering right on through. I have no idea how or why, but luckily it was on the inner leg so it wasn’t too much of an issue. I think it just ruins the whole smooth finish it has going on.

  The Toes & Ankle: as you can see below, these have reinforced toes so they’re kept safe! I kept my nails short so they wouldn’t poke holes through. These have plenty of stretch to them so you shouldn’t find any pressure added on the toes, and there should be enough wiggle room too.

Around the ankles, these are a lovely smooth finish, with a slight ombre effect!

  The Waistband: now the waistband is a bit of a funny one. Let me start off by saying as it’s a one size fits all pair, these are so long on the waist; I could sit them higher than the waist and up to my bra line!

Secondly, when they do sit high, they are comfortable but they do start to roll down. I did try to pull them down to the waist, but I got a horrible crinkle look so I kept them higher. But you’re no better as they just roll down on themselves after a while.

Thirdly, these are a bikini brief style pattern; from the waistband to the top thigh, you will see a bikini shape thicker denier outline – which I didn’t expect at all.

Fourthly, I did find that as I had some extra material, it all gathered around the top thigh, causing that little patch (right image) to happen.

The band itself is comfortable, but it’s one that I can’t seem to adjust myself to. I can’t get it to sit right, which then leaves me fidgeting all day long. Thank goodness I’m not wearing a bodycon dress otherwise it would have been a nightmare.

      My Thoughts?

I totally am digging the design of these; one of the funkiest pairs I have come across and one to certainly keep in the collection. I do love the matte finish on these tights, but the waistband was a nightmare to be in all day. If it wasn’t for that, I would happily recommend, but I would say think before you buy!

73. DREAMS come true

3... 2... 1... Blast Off! And the drawing’s Done. I’m most of all happy with how fast I doodled it out using Microsoft’s free ‘Notebook’ drawing/writing software on my Tablet, and that’s truly down to the app’s accessibility. Could I have used more powerful sketching software? Yes. Would it have resulted in a better drawing? Probably. But trying to juggle layers in Sketchbook or fight with the insufferable clunkiness of Photoshop is just something I don’t enjoy facing, and so I’ll stick to my quick simple doodles. And I’m happy with that.

Because making it all result oriented can sometimes destroy the enjoyment of the process, (not that I’m saying a result isn’t important, rather the journey is equally crucial) and I openly admit that I sketch away on Notebook because I enjoy it for many of the same reasons I adore writing: It’s the fastest way to get my ideas down.

Throughout my entire childhood, my imagination was fast and fickle, Ideas rushing in faster than I could output them, which resulted in a short attention span on any projects that took longer than, well, a sit-down. And so when a tool pops up that allows me to get ideas down faster, which potentially cuts out that “Photoshop” middleman, it ALWAYS draws my attention, especially if it yields the same high-end results.

But, as a filmmaker who wants to dabble in music, Game design and anything and everything, these tools seldom pop up. Sure, everything’s most certainly become more user-friendly, especially with such game engines like ‘Unity’ and ‘Unreal 4′ now becoming freely accessible, cutting out a lot of Dev. time/hurdles. But these advancements have never articulated in the form of tools that make animating, game design, music and everything in-between feel as intuitive as the sketch I did above on my Tablet or the essay I’m plonking out on my keyboard as we speak (or read). 

Until recently, most notably announcements of an upcoming Tool made at the last Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

But let us jump back a moment for there’s an origin to this great new tool; an earlier iteration that’s celebrating it’s Ten-year anniversary right now, a birthday I’m personally celebrating with the way it changed games/creativity forever. I know that sounds hyperbole, but trust me when I say this comes from the most Sincere place in my heart, a heart that yearned throughout my entire childhood as I stuck together simple stick men levels in Alien Hominid (Ps2, 2004) or laid out cookie cutter racetracks in RC Revenge Pro (Ps2, 2000) for the game I speak of next brought that childlike wonder back into my heart. I’m speaking of the warm, fuzzy, ambitious and very successful:

Released Ten years ago by Media Molecule (also known as Mm), a small team compiled of such visionaries like Alex Evans and Mark Healy which was founded in 2006*, their first outing on Ps3 from a distance looks like a simple fabric styled platformer. But sown (excuse the pun) deep into the fabric (sorry) of its very roots were creative ideas that grew larger than life.

* 2006 also being the year they released ‘Rag Doll Kung Fu’ which was the first third-party game to be distributed on Steam. Their progressive thinking was there from the start.  

The articulation of these ideologies can be best expressed through Mark Healy’s early foray into game development when he programmed titles for the Commodore 64 (Console, 1982, also known as C64). The C64 was the Guinness Record champion for most units sold at 10-17 million units, a record laid to rest with future consoles such as PS2 hitting over 155 Million. Yet, in recent interviews, Mark has spoken of those open source tools that allowed him to create with relative ease, and how as future consoles rolled out into people's homes which ended up selling more and more with each passing generation, that accessibility to create was lost. I mention the word ‘accessibility’ like a broken record because that’s the very word Media Molecule seem to have as their unofficial modus operandi. It’s their very soul!

And it was this very soul that was poured into their 2008 juggernaut, Little Big Planet (Also known as LBP), which was teased far earlier than it’s release (to my impatient frustration); I saw the announcement perhaps a year before, the game post-phoned, but I had a taste of the potential and it was the only thing my heart called out for every day leading up to its release*. Finally, a game that gave me the tools to make my very own games. 

* This part was actually true. Extreme? Sure, but I was stuck on an Farm growing up so it was the light in my tunnel.

The Puzzle Platformer’s official slogan was “Play, Create, Share”, basically boiling down to a Gaming Youtube with the tools ready built in. Here’s a cute 10-year-old trailer that best expressed this warm fun collaborative charm and it’s progressive stance on creativity (as well as one of the funkiest Game soundtracks from recent memory). You could make levels with ease, publish, get “views” (in this case, plays) and “likes” (expressed through Hearts) and then surf Mm’s servers to play other's creations. The first worry expressed by Critic’s was that no one would want to make levels, but Youtube as a creative platform was already the monolith of proof that this was not the case; people wanted creative output, and once the game was released with Metacritic scores averaging around 95% the Game sold well and the coMmunity was born.

The creative tools were easy to grasp but hard to master, the layers of ways to utilise them for more complicated contraptions and professionally polished levels took time to learn; fumbling around to mediocre results might draw you to the conclusion that quality couldn’t be obtained, but Mm cleverly put those anxieties to rest by including a campaign that was built exclusively with those very same tools. You had no excuse apart from “lack of practice”, and this pushed the coMmunity to make all kinds of contraptions from Mm’s physics-based engine, including someone building a fully functioning Calculator (the Creator even allowing you to fly around Jet-pack style to see how complicated the mechanisms were; turns out, very). 

LBP 2 built on that success, implementing a new refined tool called ‘Logic’ (among other improvements) which was an array of different microchips with simple functions that could be wired together to essentially ‘code’ objects to do your bidding. It was deceptively simple and never bogged down the ease that was at the heart of LBP’s Creative tool-set. The step up between games showed up past ‘peak’ coMmunity created inventions (namely the previously mentioned calculator) as bare-bones in what you could achieve with this new instalment.

I poured hours into these games, playing every LBP sequel; the future iterations were handled well by Sumo Digital (LBP 3) and Tarsier Studios, Double Eleven and XDev (LBP Vita). Mm also produced the Bafta-winning Vita/Ps4 Tearaway which I’m part way through now, enjoying endlessly in an attempt to fill the void till their next highly anticipated game.

For once again they’ve teased a pipeline title which the public await with bated breath; their next instalment in their Creative franchise (and the very reason I’m writing this article) doesn’t just build on their previous efforts of community-based tools but fully realises them. They finally made what I and many others have always wanted, a Gaming engine with the ease of drawing; a level creator that’s as simple as me typing on this keyboard; the true Youtube of gaming:

I love the LBP franchise a whole lot (still play it now), but whatever I built always felt a construct of ‘LBP’; the most approachable expressive tools I’ve ever used still restricted by the 2.5D realm of Sackboy’s recognisably cloth based world, and while you could creatively open up the borders to reveal new perspectives and ways to make games there was always the nagging feeling that you weren’t truly making YOUR game, you were making a game for Mm. This wasn’t their fault, and it’s not like you could point at any other accessible tool to exemplify these faults, because Mm was leading the charge, and still are. But this upcoming release of their new title aptly named Dreams (Beta 2018, full release TBA) shows with ease that Mm doesn’t just continue to lead this push forward, but are doing so with such an extent as to potentially shake up the gaming industry; for you truly are now making YOUR game.

Strong words are easily backed up with results I’ll show further down, but the final hurdle on their next instalment’s success isn’t just the quality or function of the final output (which Mm shows with confidence on their near-weekly streams and collaborations with other gaming developers via Twitch/Youtube) but with how the market will react to it, or if they even will react at all considering a relatively quiet reception in the wake of AAA games like Red Dead 2 and other heavyweights.

But before we discuss that further, speaking of a game like this with mere words doesn’t really do Dreams justice. I’ve watched nearly every video they’ve released across this last year so here are, in my opinion, the videos that best exemplify what their upcoming game/tool has to offer:

Game Informer’s playthrough of campaign levels, which is fantastically demoed by Veteran Mm founder and C64 programmer Mark Healey.

A run through of fun bite-sized levels made by their team, showing off the astounding variety and how each level flows into the next like a Youtube playlist. 

And should you choose to watch only one of these videos, choose this next one; Game Informer’s Rapid-Fire Q sesh (with other Mm Founder Alex Evans), which isn’t just informative but should also be commended as creative and engaging journalism at it’s finest, running at the speed of a scripted TomSka Sketch* (It should be noted that Game Informer has been hitting it out of the park over the last month with their fun and insightful cover of Dreams).

* ’TomSka’: a popular Youtuber, famous for the ASDF Cartoon sketches and his fast and frentic comedic sketches. He’s done much, and with such a consistently recognisable style and tone across all projects it could be argued he’s an auteur, which excites me greatly that Youtube can own such a phrase and that ‘auteur’ could also translate to the users on Dreams (the platform I indulgently want to be referenced coining the term ‘Youtube of Gaming’. I’ll stop saying it when everyone else starts.)

TL;DR to sum up those clips: Dream’s works.
