Ashitaka/San from Princess Mononoke for @snowflavored :3

A bit longer than I meant it to be but it took me a while to get in the groove with these characters. I wanted them to have a completely different conversation but they're not big talkers lol

Their spring time picnics have become his favorite ritual. Without his people and their own annual celebrations, it was hard at first for the exiled prince to find joy in marking specific dates and seasons. But each spring, on the first truly glorious day, villagers would report to Lady Eboshi that the strange, foreign man they've all come to love and look to for wisdom had disappeared into the mountains with Yakkul. Ashitaka can't always predict when San will call out to him, but as soon as the last of winter's snows vanish and the earliest spring blooms fill the hills with color, as soon as the sun feels hot on the back of his neck again, it's only a matter of guessing the hour. She doesn't sing like a maiden in love or howl like a wolf at the hunt - but Ashitaka hears her all the same. And so the end of winter has become his favorite time of year.

This time he's packed a feast for gods, with a hidden bottle he wants to savor only with her. He had to make many of the foods fresh each morning for a week in anticipation of San's appearance, or else risk delaying their meeting or arriving empty-handed. Ashitaka had never been a great chef but he thinks he's perfected some of these dishes over the last few days, if not through the years. His closest friends in Iron Town didn't mind his obsession this spring, since they often got to dive into the wasted meals. Ashitaka leaves mid-morning, finally, when he knows in the way he always knows that San is close by. It's a physical knowledge, but spiritual too.

He's grateful to whatever gods remain that he can chase the feeling of her presence in a time of peace with bees buzzing lazy and heavy in the warm spring wind. He feels a little like a wolf himself, though he knows better than to tell her that. "San?" He knows she's close enough to hear him but for some reason, she's hiding. This worries him and, not for the first time, he wonders what new danger threatens their delicate equilibrium. The cool shadows of the ancient forest make his spine quiver for a moment and the old curse tingles in his palm.

"San? Is anything wrong?"

Then she steps out and raises herself to her full height, spear clutched against her hip, mask pulled up to reveal her painted face. "Hello, Ashitaka," she greets him as she always does and he releases his tense shoulders.

"Why does she not run to him?" the smaller wolf asks the larger one. "When I have a mate, I will be too excited not to run!"

"San is shy," answers the elder wolf. "And maybe the prince does not like to be rushed, even by his mate. Humans are very odd."

They stretch legs one after the other, then bound away like glimmers of light into the heart of the forest. San is safe now with Ashitaka and the elder wolf has pups to look after.

San has learned a great lesson in patience watching Ashitaka prepare a meal. His movements are graceful and his hands, though strong, are careful and precise. He always thanks the gods and tidies up his cooking spot before dishing out the delights he's brought to share. This is San's favorite ritual. Despite her hunger, she's content to watch and wait for his signal. Every year, their lunch has grown more elaborate and San can hear her brothers chiding her already: "How many chickens must he bring you before you will mate?" "Why do humans wait entire seasons in between meetings?" "We will grow three tails and become blind with age before you two have a litter!"

San is tired of arguing and has her replies ready, like every year: "The food he brings is not courtship. It's friendly." "We don't always wait that long to visit each other, but he's busy!" "You have your own pups and leave me out of it."

Humans are funny, though. She can even admit now that some of them are gracious. Most don't have Ashitaka's noble heart and wise mind, but many, she's learned, are generous and silly and patient - traits the wolves taught her to love. Still, she cannot forgive them when so many make decisions out of fear or hatred or greed, that the whole lot of them smell like treachery. Except Ashitaka; he smells like all the good things of the forest, clean and warm and still, plus he has animal smell, from Yakkul and from himself. San knows Ashitaka's scent better than any other because it thrills her more than the smell of fresh meat or a clean river.

It was holding her eldest brother's new pups which made her realize how much she wanted the prince from far away to stay longer than a day and sleep near her longer than one night's need for healing. Her nieces and nephews loved their odd aunt on two legs but they were not her own. Someday, San feared, there would be wolves in this mountain who did not know her or love her... Perhaps she would be dead by then.

"San?" Ashitaka's voice is worried again, when he notices she hasn't touched a morsel. That's very unlike her. He's watched an entire bowl of stew vanish into her gullet in a matter of seconds, before she asked for more. "What's on your mind?"

He wonders if she also feels this closeness, as if they're connected by a thread of spider silk, or this warmth that gathers below his stomach and spreads up to his face, or the need he often feels, like the urge to run down a steep hillside or the pleasure of skipping a stone over the smooth surface of a lake, to stop whatever he's doing and find her. Does she feel these things too? Do they trouble her? Is she afraid? Angry?

"Ashitaka," she mumbles and quizzically tilts her head. "Is Iron Town rebuilt?"

"Hm? Well, yes, I'd say so. We've built it stronger and -" he pauses, apprehensive, "They've honored their word, haven't they, not to violate the forest?"

San simply nods. "Then, you're finished working there? You said you wanted to help the humans rebuild the town. You've done so, yes?"

"Yes..."

"Good." This appears to satisfy her and she turns to the food with renewed interest. San loves to hunt but even she can't deny the pleasure of human cooking. They have spices and broths and techniques she can only dream of, and Ashitaka must be a master of the craft.

For his part, he lets San believe the meager picnics he brings her are the height of human achievement...for now. Someday, he'd like to take her to a festival and show her the best foods, and the music and the artisans. It surprises him (and scares him a little) how easily he can imagine her strolling through a town like she belongs there.

She walks with the confidence of a general and the grace and dignity of a wolf; no one would mistake her for a princess, but strangers might call her a goddess. His goddess is licking the inside of her bowl. He laughs without meaning to. "Here, there's more."

This is how they spend their favorite day of each new year, though it can't be marked on a calendar. They live by the sense of each other and tell the passage of time by the phases of the moon and the changing seasons.

San stretches after a good meal like that and wiggles into the grass. Ashitaka lays down beside her and they sleep in the sun. After the hottest part of the day, San wakes and rolls closer to Ashitaka, breathing his scent in deeply. He will wake soon and politely take his leave. She will be curt but polite, always a little stung that he prefers to sleep behind a wall with hundreds of other humans in a city resembling a rat pit, than with her in a warm, quiet cave or out in the open under the stars. He will leave, as he always leaves, unless she can stop him.

Ashitaka sleeps longer than he means to and Yakkul finally nudges him awake. The man groans to taste elk-breath where he would prefer someone else's kiss to rouse him. He playfully swats the elk away, "Alright, I'm up."

"If you leave now, you will miss the sunset." San has packed all his things and tidied up their picnic spot. She's never done that before. "Come follow me and you'll see." She's never invited him to stay longer than the day either.

Suddenly, Ashitaka feels tongue-tied and clumsy. He chases after her a little too eagerly and San smirks. Yakul blinks, huffs a sigh, and climbs uphill after them carrying their goods.

Neither has much to say about the sunset. It's an explosion of pinks and purples and reds that promises an equally beautiful day come sunrise. Lovely. They're both too busy focused on not upsetting the other.

If San reaches out to lick and bite his ear, will Ashitaka know what it means? If he holds her hand any tighter, she might take it for a threat so he forces himself to relax... If he tries to kiss her, will she kill him? They're both paralyzed.

Something shiny at her neck catches his attention and Ashitaka silently prays in thanks for the relief that he found something to talk about. "You still have the crystal dagger I gave you..."

"Yes," she touches it, "it's beautiful and very strong."

Some bravery he doesn't feel guides his fingers toward it... Their fingertips brush together and Ashitaka's wind their way behind her neck. "More beautiful and strong because of who wears it."

Neither is sure who kissed who but Yakkul looks away and they don't make it all the way to her cave. Later, naked and tired and, yes, somehow hungry, San stretches and curls into her mate's side. "I'm glad you didn't leave again." It sounds like a silly thing to say, but she felt it deserved saying.

"Me too."

They sleep beneath the stars, unafraid and ready for the delights of spring.

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 2 - Hajime Sakura Epilogue

First post of the month.... so I’ll start by asking you to please support me if you can either on ko-fi, donations through paypal or on patreon for early access to my stuff and blog translations or just to support me. check out my lookout list if you own any hakuoki cds since im missing the audio for those on that list... removed more items thanks to downloading all sorts of stuff from assorted sources lol. Also check out my Stuff I have list if you’re interested in looking for Hakuoki content to translate.

*sigh* fuck it lol. i desire Saito stuff so i ended up translating this....ssl is going to drive me insane lol.....  *insert pitiful laughter here.*

anyway, in Yuugiroku 2 there are 2 『桜下恋語り』 stories per char.. and this is the 『 恋染めし日』 one for Hajime since it’s post-zuisouroku (i’ll refer to the other one by the character’s surname if I ever get to it though I kinda doubt it since I only have text translations for Harada’s epilogue for that... and well, i’m not interested in pulling text off videos. never again unless its for an otomate party drama... or saito stuff from when ginsei no shou is released lol). I’m now going to call these ‘sakura epilogues’ due to how these are all post main-game... and cuz i’ve already associated ‘scenario’ with the kyoka-roku rain stuff. Also, unless someone else translates whatever this is actually called (i don’t feel like googling mtling it), I’m going to do whatever (tho i will ask you why you aren’t translating hakuoki content if you aren’t already should you do so! :P) lol.

i should probably mention that there are actually few more lines after where i have “the end” if you view this story via the filling up the sakura meter method which basically amounts to to the whichever char’s epilogue you are unlocking asking if you want to continue, and then commenting a bit more if you select ‘no.’ Since I don’t have anything to translate for that though... this translation is just what you see if you view the scene via the unlocked cg menu.

——On a warm and sunny day in spring.

Tonami, which had been completely covered in snow during the winter, was finally welcoming spring with its vibrant [says: scarlet] blooming sakura.

Hajime-san and I were chatting as we stood under the shade of a tree, and after resting for a while, we looked towards the gorgeous blooming pink blossoms [says clouds/sunrise/sunset].

Chizuru:.......Tonami's sakura, they've finally started blooming.

Saito Hajime: Nn. Compared to Kyoto and Edo, the sakura here can be considered late.

Saito Hajime: Furthermore, although the sakura are now blooming, snow can still be seen in the surrounding mountains, which would be completely unthinkable in either Kyoto or Edo.

Chizuru: That's because we're very far north of Edo.......

As far as the eye could see, it seemed as if everywhere was welcoming the arrival of spring, [and] the sight of blooming sakura filled our sight.

At first glance, although the snow seemed to have melted away......

But in fact, there were many places where the sun hadn't been able to reach.

Chizuru: It appears, that it will take a while for all the snow to melt.

Saito Hajime:......Yes, though it is possible that it might snow again.

Saito Hajime: Chizuru, Even...... even if there's still snow, shall we go watch the sakura?

Saito Hajime: I have really been looking forward to enjoying the snow sakura today with you.

The corners of Hajime-san's lips were slightly lifted, and he was faintly smiling. 

Hearing Hajime-san's words, I just couldn't help but remember something and as the words caught in my throat, I wondered if I should tell him. 

Chizuru: That....... That, Hajime-san, I actually already saw the snow sakura........

Saito Hajime: What.......?

Chizuru: Actually....... last night, I woke up by chance and went outside, and ended up seeing some snowflakes falling. 

Chizuru: I originally thought they were only sakura petals, but they were colder to the touch than I thought.

Chizuru: Hajime-san?

Seeing Hajime-san suddenly become silent, I carefully asked him.

As Hajime-san revealed an expression that resembled that of an abandoned puppy, he spoke in a quiet voice to himself.

Saito Hajime: Why didn't you tell me? I also wanted to enjoy the snow sakura together with you......

Chizuru: B-but it was midnight then......!

Chizuru: Because I saw Hajime-san sleeping so soundly, I didn't have the heart to wake you then......

I shook my head in a hurry, explaining why I hadn't woken him.

Hajime-san however didn't seem satisfied with my explanation, and still remained silent without saying a word.

Saito Hajime: […………]

Chizuru: Then....... Hajime-san, are you still upset?

Saito Hajime:.......I'm not upset. Only, if you don't wake me up, it's not possible for us to watch them together.......

Chizuru: I, I'm very sorry......

The tone of his voice made my heart ache, and I could not help but look away.

As Hajime-san raised his head and looked up towards the clear blue sky, a sigh escaped his lips.

Saito Hajime:......I, perhaps I am more wilful than I thought.

Saito Hajime: The first snowfall, the first sakura, and the first of the snow sakura…… I want to see everything together with you.

Hearing Hajime-san whisper to himself, I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

Although what happened was an accident, knowing that I had seen the snow sakura by myself, however made me feel ashamed.

Chizuru: Truly...... I'm very sorry.

Saito Hajime: No, I'm not upset, you don't need to apologize.

Saito Hajime: It's just...... sometimes, I feel a bit uneasy. My love and your love, are both sides equal?

Saito Hajime: Or is it, that I am only wishfully thinking about my feelings towards you—— [rephrase later?]

Chizuru:......It's not like that.

Seeing the flash of emotions in Hajime-san's eyes, I shook my head.

Chizuru: It would be better to say, that I loved Hajime-san more——

If Hajime-san felt uneasy, then it was my responsibility to dispel such emotions.

I quietly approached him, in order to silently convey these feelings of mine.

Saito Hajime: ……Chi-Chizuru……

The petals of the sakura that blossomed early rose from their branches in the wind, drifting gently, and fell slowly after brushing my cheek. [reword later]

I snuggled and nestled up to Hajime-san while embracing him, and as I held him tightly, I spoke.

Chizuru: I think, my love for Hajime-san, it will not be outdone by your love.

Saito Hajime: What……?

Chizuru: My love for Hajime-san, surely, it must be the deepest in the world.

Chizuru:......In this aspect, I will absolutely not be outdone by(/lose to) Hajime-san.

Saito Hajime:......What nonsense are you saying, I will not be outdone by you.

Suddenly, Hajime-san's words regained their former tenderness.

In order to convey these strong emotion, I pulled him into a tight embrace.

With the ridiculous idea that whoever let go first would lose, we hugged each other for a long time.

——Eventually, the two of us separated from each other at the same time.

The moment we parted, we found ourselves blushing because of what happened just now.

Chizuru: So-sorry, Hajime-san. I can't believe I did that sort of thing......

Saito Hajime: Although you've said that...... I am the same as you.

Saito Hajime: An, anyway, [since] there's nothing to do now, shall we return home?

After that, I followed Hajime-san who was sakura-red in the face as we began walking home.

due to my bias, this is probably one of my favourite translations... i kinda like how uncertain Saito is portrayed in in these post main game stories as they’ve shown how his concern is still Chizuru’s happiness.... though this makes me think that there isn’t really a lot of time between the main game’s ending and the endings of of zuisouroku and reimeiroku since Saito is aware of how their life is more difficult in Tonami which is also mentioned in the my tl of saito’s hana no shou after story. 

Also, I recently found Chinese translations of more of these yuugiroku 2 post-zuisouroku sakura epilogues for chikage and souji.... bringing my total (counting this one) to 5/6. will get to those after ssl... whenever the hell that is. this was only done to indulge myself and i don’t intend to do more unplanned translations lol.

Hello! We had a couple of very strong cold fronts come through, and the tomato season has finally come to an end.  I didn't think it was all that cold, and many of the other plants seemed to deal with the cold better but the tomatoes just flat out fell over dead.  So the view from my desk is unimpeded by gangly nightshades for the first time in months.  What else has been going on?  Let's see!  ...wow, it's a lot of pictures of cats, but no news is good news, right? 1.  Allll the plants.  Well, not ALL of them. - We brought in all the potted plants.  Thing is, since we lost a lot of backyard to piles of rock-heavy landscaping, there's a lot of plants in pots.  I had to leave out the bowl of bluebonnets, which is like three feet across, heavy glazed pottery and full of a couple of bags of wet dirt so it's pretty much stuck out there.  Luckily bluebonnets seem to be pretty cold-hardy.  But inside are several things I intend to plant outside, including chives now that the peppers have died, and another passion vine.  The two I have aren't really taking off so I got a new variety that is supposed to make especially tasty fruit in addition to the weird flowers?  It's not getting planted until spring; this one would not make it through a freeze.  Note also cat, mid-jump.

2.  Vitamin D - in true Texas fashion, the freeze was followed by a few warm days.  I came back from doing something or other, and decided to just lay in the sunlight and listen to some music.  It was perfect.

3.  Bracelet of stars - there's a diagram you can easily find online called a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram that shows a scatter plot of stars of various sizes and colors that shows you how bright they are and how hot they are, and a famous science person has a side-hustle making bracelets that look like different stars on one of these charts.  It's clunky as hell but I really love looking at it.  And it was made by a famous (to me) science person (Emily Lakdawalla)!

4.  Another orange butterfly - this was in my yard, probably headed south for the winter, and is another orange and black guy who's not a monarch- but this one looks close enough to a monarch that I suspect that's why it's called a 'Queen' butterfly.  It's pretty closely related to the monarch, as you could imagine.

5.  Planets at sunset - a fat crescent Moon was out of frame at the top, and I missed seeing Venus by probably ten minutes (Venus is moving between the Sun and the Earth and so it's getting closer to the Sun in the sky and harder to spot in the glare).  I'm pretty stoked that I have found a place nearby that has a good view of the western horizon.  I love this neighborhood because it's got nice big trees everywhere, but it's a pain when I'm trying to get an unobstructed view of the horizon. This one is pretty good, and it's a 2 minute drive away from here.  It's a field between a church and an elementary school.  I just hope I don't get in trouble setting up a tripod and taking pictures in the direction of an elementary school some fine evening; it probably looks weird if you don't know what's going on.  In any event!  Most of the planets are heading to the other side of the Sun, so one by one they'll head over to being viewable before sunrise, and sometime in the next few months there will be a chance to see them in order (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) in a nice line across the sky.  That'll be something to see!

Oh, it’s you

The five times York told Carolina he loved her, and the one time he had to tell Delta instead. For @lostlegendaerie.

The first time York told Carolina that he loved her, the word was four letters and it started with W.

The lights in Errera were red and blue and so he didn’t realize at first that she was too, that the skirt swishing against her long legs was teal and that the hair swishing against her long neck was red, red. In homage he ordered a purple drink and in exchange she would bite a purple bruise against the pulse point at the base of his throat. But that was later.

“Come here often?” he asked, shooting her a hundred watt smile.

“Never,” she said, and she didn’t smile at all but the way she flicked her eyes at him made him breathless anyway. “But maybe I will now.”

He fiddled with a lighter someone had left at the bar, and he didn’t even smoke but it was something to do with his hands and he’d always been fidgety–

She snatched it away, just plucked it out of his hands like an eagle with a rabbit. “If you play with fire, you’re going to get burned,” she said with the faintest ghost of a smile at the edge of her mouth and he figured, with her hair bright as candle flame and her eyes glowing like nuclear fallout, that there were worse ways to die.

“What’s your name?” he asked, instead of saying that.

“Carolina,” she said, “like the state. You?”

“Elijah,” he said, “like the prophet.”

He was too much of a gentleman to drag his fingertips under the hem of her gauzy skirt while they were in the cab, since the driver was right there, but after it took him the longest minute of his life to unlock his door with shaking hands there was no reason to wait. She had him pinned in half a second, her teeth to his throat.

“God,” he gasped, knees shaking. “You made me look so nervous unlocking the door, if I’m not careful I’m gonna get arrested for breaking into my own apartment. Again.”

“I’ll get that story out of you later,” she murmured against his collarbone.

When her fingers slipped under his shirt to graze his sides, he gasped again. “I want to– I want you to– I want,” he said, struggling with every syllable.

“You’re not supposed to just want,” she said.

“Well, I want to.” That made her laugh, and her laugh made him take her by the hand and lead her to the bedroom. “I want you. Is that good enough?”

The second time York told Carolina that he loved her, the word was four letters and it started with M.

The mission was supposed to be four nights, and then five; on night eight, even North noticed that York was despondent. On night thirteen the sleeplessness started; day sixteen saw him drink so much coffee that his heart was on DEFCON one all day.

Finally he bit the bullet and used the emergency line. He prayed that when– not if– he was caught, he’d be able to give a sensible-sounding explanation for why this was indeed an emergency. Counselor, have you ever heard of Broken Heart Syndrome?

“You sound awful,” Carolina said, and she knew how to dance on this beautiful line between concern and reproach.

“Thanks,” he said, and meant it. “I look awful, too. You’re lucky this isn’t a video call.”

“Am I?”

“No,” he amended. “I’m a delight.”

Her room was built like she was, neat and practical and comfortable in a stoic sort of way, with a low sturdy desk carefully strewn with papers and very regulation bedding over the finest mattress that the military could bother buying. There were no photos, no art, no personal artifacts at all; it would have been stranger if there were. York wore his heart on his sleeve and the little things that made him demonstrably him were always obvious: scars, tattoos, Mardi Gras beads he earned the usual way. Carolina was a study in internality, and kept her damage locked safely away.

She kept her room locked up too, but that was easier to get into.

Was she in armor at a post, scrolling through reports on her datapad? Was she in sweatpants sitting at the edge of her bed with her shoulders rolled forward, the way she unconsciously curled into herself out of armor? Was she sleepless too? Did she… did she think about him too?

“You’re not supposed to call on the emergency channel unless it’s an emergency. You’re lucky I’m waiting for my ride.”

His heart flipped and the smile he wore colored his voice warm as honey. “It was an emergency,” he said, and he knew she’d kick his ass for it but it was probably worth it. “I miss you.”

If she were in a good mood, she would have hung up on him immediately for that, so when she said “I miss you too,” it meant something a lot sadder too.

The third time York told Carolina that he loved her, the word was seven letters and it started with B.

Late nights on the Mother were as clinical and cold as anything York had ever known. He missed places where the air tasted of wood smoke, of rain, of cardamom; where summer breezes kissed his cheeks and winter winds slapped them; where spongy moss gave in to the weight of his feet and where he could leave tangible proof of his existence in sand or snow; where there were sunrises and sunsets and eclipses and light pollution and clouds.

Instead everything was cold, metal, sterile, cold, practical, ugly, cold. So sometimes he would sit cross-legged in front of the huge windows late at night and trace the swirling galaxies and try and find the poetry in that too. Sometimes it even made him feel better. Sometimes Carolina would sit with him.

“I don’t think I believe in God,” she said one night, very softly, after an hour of saying nothing at all. York glanced over at her but she was staring straight ahead at a constellation he couldn’t name; there was no Cassiopeia out here.

“What makes you say that?” he asked, not to push but anxious to keep hearing her talk in that tone, warm and careful.

“No one could just… make that.” She touched the glass, palm flat. “It’s too much. It’s too big. It’s too beautiful.”

Oh, to hear Carolina call that miserable expanse of nothingness beautiful, Carolina whose hair was the red of ripe September apples and whose eyes were new spring grass, Carolina who shone in the sun and laughed as broad as any open plain, Carolina who was everything beautiful about the world, about the living.

He hadn’t planned to say anything to that; it was both too early and too late for a conversation about theology and theogony. But Carolina turned towards him incrementally, hesitantly, and asked, “do you? Believe in God?”

Speaking of things that were too much, too big, too beautiful. The question was overwhelming in its simplicity so he sidestepped it rather elegantly and said “I believe in… you.”

“I would hope so. I’m right here.”

“No, not… I believe in the human heart. I believe in honesty, loyalty, fidelity; I believe in beauty, life, love; I believe in justice, mercy, trust. I believe that people will usually do the right thing, or at least the wrong thing for the right reasons.”

There was more to it than that, and he could have listed the specifics too: the way the crust of fresh bread cracked against his teeth, the curiosity and brightness of children asking what, why, how, the way it felt to wake up next to a lover and think oh, it’s you. Thank God. It’s you.

And it was her, truth be told. The way it felt when she brushed her lips over his temple in the mornings when she left earlier than he did, the ragged curve of her bitten fingernail when she flipped him off, the Orion’s belt of freckles at the base of her neck. It was her presence, steady as his heartbeat. It was that she talked theology with him at midnight. It was that she was here at all.

“I think you give people too much credit,” she said, back to looking out at the stars, and he knew she was already far away. “But I wish I had your faith.”

Why not? She had his everything else.

The fourth time York told Carolina that he loved her, the word was four letters and it started with N.

It was all supposed to get easier, they all said it, the Director said it, the medics said it, everyone, everyone. Delta himself said it would get easier, that York would adjust to a splinter personality tearing his consciousness jagged, and the headaches lessened over time but the– the rest–

When he was a kid learning to swim he would get caught up in the big waves off the bay and it took all his strength to keep his head above water, let alone moving anywhere, and this felt like that on a cosmic scale. It was the Red Queen phenomenon in perfect reproduction: run as fast as you can just to stay where you are. He couldn’t sleep longer than a few hours at the most, less if the bloody fragmented dreams started up again.

And the eye, he told everyone it didn’t bother him and on an emotional level it didn’t but he was getting vertigo and his peripheral vision went to shit and that rocketed up his anxiety, which didn’t help either the sleeplessness or the vertigo. When it got that bad, Delta didn’t feel like a tool that would bring him back up to normality but yet another crutch, only an emotional one instead of physical.

One night was so bad, so bad, he hadn’t slept at all the night before and couldn’t sleep again and all the coffee made him nauseous and the anxiety made it worse, and Delta didn’t ever stop and he felt so disconnected from reality that he could just–

He fumbled for his comm link. “Carolina?” he croaked. “I need you.”

And she came, she said nothing but she came immediately and her cheeks were flushed like she’d run the whole way and maybe she had and she cupped his face in her callused hands and that grounded him so firmly and immediately he swayed where he stood. “You’re here,” she said. “I’m here, and you’re here. Okay? Look at me, York.”

And his name, the sharp round sound of the name they gave him, the pseudonym that matched her, the name that had become as real to him as the one his mother gave him, the sound of it in her mouth brought him back to himself and set his heartbeat back to regularity. “Carolina,” he said, without meaning anything by it, just to say it.

“York,” she said again in return, and he didn’t know what she meant by it at all.

The fifth time York told Carolina that he loved her, the word was six letters and it started with T.

“–An’ my point is… is that…” York paused, tried to think, came up blank. “Carolina, what was my point?”

“Wish I knew, buddy. Walk faster, c’mon. You’re heavy.” His arm was slung over her shoulders and she was half-leading, half-carrying him to his room. “Why don’t you get drunk in your room next time? So no one needs to carry your dumb ass home?”

He shook his head vehemently. “Because,” he said like she was being a fool, “then someone would have to carry South home, an’ that’s not… not…” He struggled to think of a better word than nice but his mental thesaurus was out of commission. “Not gentlemanly.”

“North would have carried her. He did on shore leave, remember? Hell, North would carry you home very willingly. You don’t have to call me every time.” But she didn’t sound angry, and when he focused his bleary eye on her face, the smile lines around her eyes were all crinkled up. He smiled to see them; Carolina’s smile was like a yawn, in that it provoked an unavoidable mirror neuron response.

He missed what she said next because he was trying to remember how to spell neuron.

Finally they reached his room and she dumped him gently but inelegantly on his bunk. “Stay,” she ordered, and it didn’t occur to him to disobey. She left and returned with a glass of water and two Advil and commanded him to take it all in, that it would make him feel better in the morning. Delta probably would’ve given him the same advice if York hadn’t had him log off for the night. Could Delta get drunk?

“You’re lucky you have me,” she said, and he wouldn’t have argued even if he felt he could hold his own in an argument at all.

“Yeah,” he said. “Thanks. For… everything.”

“You don’t really need to thank me. I’m your CO and your friend, it’s kind of in my job description.”

“I know,” he said. “And thanks.”

The last time York told Carolina that he loved her, the word was four letters and it started with L, and Carolina wasn’t there so he had to tell Delta instead.

“What would you have told her, York?”

He hated these stupid journal entries. He wasn’t ever going to listen to them again, wasn’t going to send them anywhere, didn’t want to save them. But Delta thought documentation was important, and he thought Delta was important, so it was the tradeoff he agreed upon.

Still, they were easier when they were catharsis. It was easier to talk to Delta than no one at all. “I would have told her…” God, there was so much he should have told her. “That I understand why she did what she did. I just wish she hadn’t.” But then, there was so much he wanted to apologize for too, so much he could have done, should have done. Had there been a way to make it right, at the time? Was there something he could have said or done that would have made her listen, understand?

“I wish she could’ve learned to let things go. I guess I should too.” After all, she was gone; if not dead, then somewhere else, somewhere he hadn’t found her. And he could, he could try, he could scour the galaxy asking anyone who spoke his language, have you seen a soldier in expensive armor, teal-seafoam-blue-green? Have you seen a redhead with piercing green eyes? Have you seen a woman who laughed like the world was ending?

But he’d read the files. He knew about Allison. He couldn’t do that to himself, or to Carolina.

“I should’ve told her I loved her,” he mumbled to Delta late that night, when he was sprawled on the floor of an empty house. “That’s what I should’ve told her. Carolina, I love you.” It wasn’t very poetic, but it was true, and that would matter more to her.

“I am sure she knew how you felt, even if you never said it in so many words.”

There was no way Delta could know that, no way he could even really understand it; but he was trying to be kind, and more and more these days York felt too sad to be kind so he appreciated it.

“Thanks, D. I hope so.” He yawned, so wide his jaw cracked. “I’m probably gonna have to break into that place downtown tomorrow. The one I scouted out yesterday? Security looks pretty minimal. And if anyone catches me I’ll just tell ‘em it’s my place and I locked myself out.”

And my response would always be. “It’s just Chicky” and then they would ask “but is it a boy or girl?” And my three year old self was just like “??? Are you not paying attention? Felipe Alves is an outdoor travel photographer who lives in Oakland, California. He was born in São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, Brazil, where he spent 10 years of his life growing up.

Q: What first inspired you to start shooting?

A: What inspired me to start shooting was being a long distance from home.

I wanted to share my memories with the people I cared for who couldn’t be present with me. I remember taking pictures of my little brother in Brazil and mailing them to the United States so my auntie and uncle could see what he was like. I’d have pictures of him smiling, playing with toys, going outside to the park—you know, memories.

There was no internet or Facetime back then. Receiving the developed photographs and looking back on snippets of your life felt so rewarding, and I always wanted to share them.

Q: On your website, you mention that you spent the first ten years of your life in Brazil. How has that experience influenced your approach to photography?

A: I am constantly trying to document things. At a friend’s birthday, I’ll have my camera. Going on a hike or to a beach, I’ll have my camera. Anywhere and everywhere.

I was 10 years old when I moved here, and whenever I spoke to my grandparents, all they wanted to know was how we were doing, how tall were we now. Documenting everything for them was my way of making sure we never felt apart.

As a kid, my grandparents would show me photos of their grandparents, and it always amazed me how I could travel back in time with a still image, so I always try to do the same. You can never have too many photographs, because each one will tell a story.

Q: Now that you’re in California, do you find the creative community reflects the Bay Area’s diversity?

A: California is amazing. You can truly meet anyone from anywhere in the world here—specifically in the Bay Area, and I love it.

With different people from different backgrounds, the creative community strengthens in diversity. You can literally find an artist for anything you need—the options are limitless. Powerful creatives with different stories to tell, different journeys faced, all together for one passion, which is to create/share/inspire/ but ultimately express their art. Photographers, videographers, musicians, painters, actors, so many of us with so many different styles—it’s beautiful!

Q: California is a beautiful place to call home and has so many different landscapes from lush green forests to deserts to mountains, and of course, the ocean. Do you have favorite photography spots in the area?

A: When I was in High School, my environmental science teacher once said that we do not explore our backyard enough. Whether that is your city, your county, your state—go out and explore because our world is so big.

California is a state that allows you to explore so many landscapes, and to be honest, I love them all. However, my favorite place in California would be Yosemite. You can go there during the summer and after a long hike, rest your feet in the water. If you go during the winter, you see it snowy white, during the autumn with beautiful yellow foliage, and during the spring, when the snow melts, the waterfalls roar louder. Definitely my favorite.

Q: Your photography focuses a lot on wonderful and awe-inspiring landscapes, what is the best way to prepare for an outdoor shoot?

A: From experience, the best way to prepare for an outdoor shoot is to make sure you have your timing locked down. If the photo you want is on top of the mountain during the sunset, make sure you give yourself enough time to drive to the location, hike up the mountain, set up your camera, and fully enjoy the sunset without the need for excessive rushing to set up your gear. It’s much less painful this way.

Travel light. Don’t pack everything—bring only the essentials so you’re never carrying heavy equipment while moving from place to place.

Q: You often use natural light to highlight the relationship between a subject and the landscape, what are some things you like the most about working this way?

A: I’ve noticed that the light captured in photographs issues different emotions when someone views it, the mood changes.

I enjoy the sunset and sunrise hours because it gives this timeless feel to the photograph without any harsh lighting. If you shoot the same subject around midday and again during sunset hours, you will most often find yourself drawn to the photo with the dreamy lighting. Everything looks more epic during these special hours.

Q: What would you say to anyone who wants to stand out as an outdoor, travel photographer?

A: Make sure to enjoy the outdoors too.

Don’t get caught up on attempting to get the “best” outdoor travel photograph, and forget what brought you outside in the first place. If you are enjoying yourself at that moment, your photograph will probably convey the same feeling.

And, of course, never stop exploring.

You will only become a good travel photographer if you are constantly shooting and constantly exploring. New locations provide new photographs, new photographs provide more experience, and with more experience, you’ll naturally become better and build a great portfolio along your journey.

Q: Travel photography is always in commercial demand, what are some tips you have picked up from licensing this type of content on 500px?

A: In addition to shooting beautiful landscapes, it’s always a plus when you have a model or subject in your pictures. Make sure your model is wearing something that is license-friendly with no logos of any kind, and that they sign the model release form for your photos.

Whenever a model is present, the photograph becomes more relatable. The model helps the viewer understand the scale and surroundings of where the photo was taken. For example, how big the waterfall is compared to a human.

Another good tip is to make sure to never overexpose, and always shoot in RAW format so you can bring back lots of the details when editing.

Q: Speaking of travel, what is one destination that delivered beyond your expectations?

A: My last travel destination before the outbreak of the virus was Iceland. I will recommend this Nordic island to anyone for the rest of my life. I was there for the first time in February 2020. It was cold, it was windy, but it was beyond beautiful. You will never find similar landscapes anywhere else in the United States.

I saw frozen fields of lava rocks, huge waterfalls, hot springs, ice caves, mountain ranges, northern lights, and glaciers floating in the water. The country is so rich with different landscapes and coastal views, it was insane. I will most definitely go back during the summer season when the sun provides more daylight, and the roads are less frozen.

Q: Do you have advice or recommendations for others who may want to visit Iceland?

A: If you go to Iceland, no matter what people say, make sure to visit Blue Lagoon. It’s a little expensive but worth the experience. Considered to be one of 25 Wonders of the World, it’s an experience that can’t be missed. You will be bathing in a spa powered by geothermal activity, which is really unique!

Pack layers because Iceland is very cold and very open. Book tours to visit ice caves. The ice is already melting, and many of the caves are disappearing, so the sooner you go, the better.

Lastly, experience it all and have fun creating memories and documenting your journey.

10 reasons why fall is the best season for adventures

Cool, crisp air. Shorter days. Fireplace cranking, Hot toddy’s flowing. The crunch of fallen leaves underfoot.

There’s no question that fall is the season of cozy. Dare I say hygge?

Even the die-hard lovers of spring, summer and winter can admit there’s just that strange, mysterious factor that make everyone feel warm and happy when they transition into the season of color.

I know better than anyone how tempting it is to go into hibernation mode in autumn. An East Coast girl at heart, these colorful months are in my blood, even since I moved to New Zealand and have come to accept fall in April – which let’s be honest, is still kinda weird.

I love snuggling up next to the fire with a good book, content with spending a day baking and writing, and of course, thinking. But I love even more wandering outside beneath yellow leaves, and the smell of fire in the air.

I know it’s tempting to put on your long johns and start the Christmas music in October but don’t be too quick to skip this magical season all together. Fall is my favorite time of the year and is arguably the best season for adventure, even if it arrived very late this year.

Step aside summer and winter, we’ve got a new favorite adventure season in town.

1. The perfect weather

Congratulations, you’ve made it through the sweltering summer.

You’ve endured endless nights of restlessness because it’s frankly too damn hot to be comfortable. You’ve survived the bug bites, the ugly ass sun hats, the hair that sticks to your sweaty forehead making looking presentable almost impossible. You’ve done it!

Welcome to fall where you’ll be greeted with the perfect temperatures. All those hikes you decided to abandon because it was too hot? Now’s the perfect time to do them.

You’ll be comfortable and cool and maybe you’ll even get to wear more than the absolute bare minimum for layers. Throw on that cute beanie you’ve kept in storage.

You’ll be just cool enough to keep the sweating to a minimum so you can get those summit views easier and more comfortably.

2. All the pretty colors, obviously

Anyone who pretends to be unfazed by the radiant light show that nature puts on every autumn is, quite frankly, full of shit.

It is spectacular when the leaves change, heralding fall, no questions asked.

Golds, reds, oranges, I love them all. As soon as the leaves begin to change, my heart soars and I want to be out and about amongst the colors as much as I can.

Nature is literally changing its whole color scheme from bright green to earthy browns, yellows, reds, purples. Seeing an entire landscape explode into a totally different shade than a month ago?

That’s magic.

It’s like seeing a mountain on fire without any of the danger. Yes please, can nature look like this all the time??

3. No more crazy crowds

Good news! Summer vacations are over.

Those crying, screaming kids disrupting your peaceful nature time are back in school.

For some reason, people are spending their weekend watching football which is great because that means you get nature all to yourself. Take advantage of the quiet trails while everyone else is gorging on cheese dip and pumpkin spiced lattes.

Just avoid those heavy Instagram autumn spots, can’t guarantee those won’t be busy.

4. You get to wear all of the clothes and be all cozy

Summer wardrobes suck.

Everything is exposed all of the time and after few weeks of sweating through your outfit every day, you begin to miss the beauty of an autumn wardrobe.

When on a summer hike, you can only take off so much but in fall, it’s time to layer up, baby! Leggings, thick socks, leather boots, long-sleeves, hoodies, jackets and beanies.

Fall wardrobes have so much opportunity, so much diversity.

5. Explore the mountains before they’re covered in snow

You may already be frothing for winter and a season on the skis but don’t forget that when the snow comes, a lot of the alpine will generally be off limits.

This is your last chance to get high without the complications of ski gear and avalanche knowledge.

In fall, the peaks may get a small dusting of snow but it’s still accessible and plus, a light dusting paired with a fiery mountain landscape is the stuff photographers drool over. Enjoy those peaks. You might not see them again for another six months.

6. Vinyard harvest

Living near wine regions around the world, I have because highly aware of autumn because of the harvest. Come vintage time, all hands are on deck and these beautiful bits of land truly come alive as everyone works to bring in the grapes before the frosts of winter descend.

A true art form that I’ll never understand, what I do get it is the wild harvest parties that happen at the end, that I often end up at!

So much fun.

7. It’s totally fine to end a hike with hot cider and a hearty meal

Roasted veggies, hearty stews, mashed potatoes. Fall is the season of comfort food.

No one wants to end their hot summery hike with a big roast dinner and a hot apple cider. No thanks.

In Autumn? Definitely! You can reward yourself after your adventure with a hot, comforting meal fit for kings.

8. Shorter days means you get to see more sunrises and sunsets

Fall is great for lovers of sleep.

It’s darker longer which means that pesky sun won’t wake you up until much, much later. You even get an extra hour of sleep when the clock rolls back. For those of us who love sleep to an unhealthy degree, seeing a sunrise in the summer is brutally painful. Waiting up at 5:30am just to be prepped for morning golden hour? Sounds good in theory but never works quite like I want it to.

In Fall? No problem. Go ahead and give yourself a sleep in. You’ll get your beauty rest, have time to make a coffee and still make golden hour. Nice!

Planning an autumn hike when the days are shorter means that you need to be extra prepared with gear. I always throw in a headlamp if I’m going on a day hike and always carry more layers than I think I’ll need in case the weather really turns. You gotta be prepared for it all.

9. Wildlife viewing can be amazing

Grab your binoculars!

Bird are migrating, salmon are spawning, elk are bugling, the high alpine animals are slowly making their way down the mountain as the temperatures drop. Bears are scrounging up the last of the berries before heading off for hibernation and squirrels are busy gathering and stashing nuts for the winter.

For those who want to get a glimpse of these elusive animals, autumn is your chance! But be careful, wildlife can be especially aggressive this time of year so keep your distance and resist all temptation to get a selfie with wild animals.

If you’re hiking in bear territory, it’s always a good idea to carry a bell and bear spray, just in case.

10. Get cabin cozy

And last but not least, my favorite thing to do in autumn is spend time out away from the cities cozied away in a cute cabin.

From the smells of the first wood fires to the crunchy leaves under your feet as you walk through the woods, there is something so nostalgic and lovely about getting away for a few days to a cabin somewhere. Airbnb is usually my go-to for looking for little cabins to get away to. Do you have any faves to share?
