#I just really like the commentary Jon gives you in the journal

What I really love about Sherlock Holmes Chapter One is that this game does not hold your hand through nearly, if not, everything that you encounter. Cases, evidence, deciding which conclusion to go with, since each chapter allows you to make your own decision, hinging on consequences that you may have to bear with for the entirety of the game.
So not only do you truly have to feel like a fool sometimes when you don't have a direction (which would probably be the case for me if I were a detective, because I'm just that terrible) but you're also dealing with Mr. Drama King in the back of your head.
Yes I'm talking about Jon. I've (to the best of my ability) grabbed snippets from his journal of his personal thoughts about you when you so much as do something this little potato doesn't approve of.
Though let's be real, a few of the reactions he gives are mostly just him complaining about his impatience with you. I'm going to leave all this under the cut so that it's not some HUGE text that blocks everything on your dash:
Tumblr media
First of all, I'm not that smart when it comes to finding certain articles, at least not in every case (I will say I think the main story paper digging feels a lot more generous than the DLC ones, my word I felt stupid sometimes). You take two seconds to flip to another police document or news article and Jon pretty much moans behind you like "Hurry up I feel like I'm aging" and it's like "I don't see you helping honey, PLEASE."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes I'm struggling in archives because I accidentally looked up the wrong thing. Now he's just being a little brat. He acts as though you dragged him to the grocery store like he was your youngest kid and makes him walk on the side of the cart always. And no he can't get a toy from the toy section and he's going to pout about it. The best thing is leaving the screen to retrace your steps or figure out what you missed and all you see is this 👎and it's like would you calm down, I'm doing my best!
He's also super sarcastic. Since Jon is a portion of Sherlock's own personality that seeps through, mostly the playful and self-loving sort of aspects, his humor is also as dry as his, which is probably why they're able to run each other into annoying circles without actually pissing each other off. You never win and you never lose when you argue with yourself do you?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I dunno which I prefer more: Jon's incredibly witty and improvised liners out in the free world where you can roam and he occasionally makes his presence, or his down-right back handed comments in his personal notes.
Though don't get me wrong, I understand when things don't mesh well with someone that you know better than anyone else could ever know someone and things don't add up or something happens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My weakest points when it comes to figuring out the cases was definitely the recreation process. I feel like this is where the two kind of combine heads. This is where they're seemingly more in tune with one another. I really enjoyed having Jon be the one to piece together what happened, as though they were walking through it together without saying a word. Finishing each other's sentences with each point that was connected.
Making mistakes you couldn't pin-point precisely, and then when you finally get it you either feel accomplished or a little defeated because it's like "Okay well you knew that you just had a few steps to get there" and Jon's in the corner being like "We're supposed to be a team y'know" and it's like I know, I just suck at being a detective.
Jon's reactions to what you do in the cases almost each and every step of the way is what sold his personality for me. He's rounded enough to have himself as a separate entity to Sherlock, with his own opinions and thoughts and sense of morality. He's a fantasy nerd for goodness sake, drinks and smokes a lot more than Sherlock probably ever implies, and is never afraid to speak on the sensual things (I'm talking about Sherlock's unmentionables comment as well as the painting in the caravanserai)
Which means he's very capable of calling Sherlock out when he does something wrong. A healthy relationship with anyone you assign yourself to isn't immune to having arguments or disagreements. Much less, you're allowed to tell someone you utterly made a mistake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them have a sense of mortality and a sense of justice. When someone is wrongfully accused or being blackmailed, or even shot down, that's a red flag in their books. The only reason I'm calling him dramatic in this sense with these images is because I had been nearly a full clear on two separate bandit lair occasions, and scuffed the very last one at the last possible second and left the dude a corpse on the floor. IT WAS AN ACCIDENT.
Though however, the consequences of your actions that give you Jon's comments do in fact alter the image of his visage when you open his notes. If you've done this type of accident enough, it makes sense. Sherlock does not act this way, this is not Sherlock, what the hell is going on? Jon would have no ability to step in and take away the automatic to defend people. It's immoral, and the two of them don't need to stoop to a lower ground to gain justice for something else.
You're a detective, you do not get a say in who stays above ground and who goes, that's not your prerogative. And that's why I love reading these notes. A lot of them are not mentioned here because 1) they're mostly positive because more often than not I had some sense of understanding of what I needed to do, and 2) they're repeated in certain situations. Though I'm very tempted to have a playthrough of where I get more negativity in Jon's responses to see if there are any other quotes that I've not seen before.
There were already at least 30 pages worth of comments - but I really love his little doodles. This game lets you mess up, it's not going to reach forward and say "this is what you need to do" there's no hint whatsoever. You're bound to make these mistakes, and it's the comments given that makes you feel like you're truly a part of the action and story you're walking through.
You're not alone when you travel here, and what you do is painting a certain image of yourself to someone that cares about you. This is your story, and you're free to make these mistakes, you're free to take the information you learn, dissect it and learn what happened - but in the end, it's you that makes the ending decision. There is no one correct answer, but there are many consequences.

Steve Harrington & Jonathan Byers’
The Great American Road Trip
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 1. 07/21/1993. Chicago, IL to St. Louis, MO.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 1: Jonathan and I are on the Route 66. Finally. We have been planning this trip for a while, and we’re going from Chicago to Santa Monica the whole way through, then visiting Argyle. I’ve been wanting to go on a cross country road trip for a long time, so it’s great that we get to go now. We stopped by a vendor at the pier first and got some sunglasses for the road. Jonathan said I’m too obsessed with sunglasses. I don’t think so though. It’s not my fault I look incredibly cool in them. He looks really good in them too, not that he’ll ever admit it. He wouldn’t let me take a picture of him with two sunglasses on at the same time, but he looked pretty silly. We drove for a few hours to Springfield where we stopped for a quick lunch at a diner. Actually, Jonathan drove and I provided meaningful commentary the whole way. Jonathan also won’t stop filming everything he sees with his video camera… he’s making a film later of our trip. Robin told me I should keep a journal too, write down stuff I find interesting along the way. Which I saw a lot of. One of which is this big statue called The Gemini Giant in Wilmington. He had an astronaut helmet that looks more like a mask for welding, but it was pretty cool. My favorite stop of the day was the detour to the old brick road which is part of the original stretch of the Route. We’re already out of Illinois and made it to St. Louis even with all our stops. But it was already dark when we arrived so we’ll have to see the Arch tomorrow. I’m absolutely wiped because I took over the driving role after Springfield, but today was more fun than I even imagined.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Do you really have to record everything?”
“Oh yes, this is very important. We’re capturing the essence of Americana… gorging yourself on a hamburger with bacon. Pure American decadence.”
“Give me that, I’m not being the only one with my mouth open on camera.”
“Alright, alright. Here you go, get a shot of our milkshakes together.”
“So, Jonathan. Tell the camera, how have I been as a road trip companion so far?”
“Hmm, very distracting.”
“What? I’m offended.”
“Don’t look at me like a kicked puppy, I mean it in a good way. I’ve just never seen you this lively or taken with anything, that’s all. This is about fulfilling your dream as much as it is about mine. It is like being a kid all over again, isn’t it? Going places we’ve never been before and seeing new things. It’s just hard to focus on the road when your eyes are lighting up beside me with every weird landmark we pass.”
“Nice save there, Jon. I am glad we get to do this together. It’s already some of the most fun I’ve had, and you are a great partner to go on a road trip with.”
“Likewise, Steve. I can’t believe we’ve never done this before.”
“And why don’t you give us something from that book of yours as parting words for anyone who might be seeing this?”
“I don’t think we’ll be showing this to anyone but sure… let’s see… okay, here. ‘What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing?—It’s the too-huge world vaulting us, and it’s good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies.’”
“Alright… I think I understood what that means… now, back on the road!”
Steve & Jonathan listen to this on repeat for about 5 times before they both grow tired of it. Steve then wonders if there are any other songs about Route 66 to which Jonathan goes on a 15 minute long lecture about the origin of the song, from Nat King Cole to the other renditions. Steve listens with a fond smile as Jonathan becomes more animated behind the wheel, and plays the tape again just for the fun of it.

[AO3] - [read the rest of the series here]
Martin has the TV set to a low murmur, letting Bake Off reruns play in the background as he combs his fingers through Gerry’s hair. It’s warm in the flat, the summer worming its way in through the cracks of the place and turning everything hot and tight. The fan is louder than the TV, oscillating back and forth between the two bodies slumped on the sofa and the one on the chair.
Jon grumbles as the movement rustles his papers, his glasses low on his nose and gaze intent on the paper he’s reading.
“You know,” Gerry says from his comfortable position on Martin’s lap, “if you didn’t assign so much work, you wouldn’t have so much to grade.”
Martin pinches Gerry’s ear in admonishment as Jon makes a noise of protest from his comfortable perch on the arm chair. Gerry yelps and then laughs, swatting at Martin’s hand.
“I’m just saying, you do this to yourself.”
“Hush,” Martin says, tugging gently on a lock of black hair, “It’s too hot to deal with you.”
Gerry hums, picking his head up enough to wink at Jon who just sighs in reply. Gerry settles back in and Martin resumes his petting. It’s nice, despite the heat, one of the very few days they have to spend together. Jon had offered to help out with a summer class at the university that had been overbooked and Gerry had recently been promoted to manager at the bar he’d been working for, which was all phenomenal and Martin was so proud of them both, but it left them all with shockingly little time together.
Martin’s thumb strokes down Gerry’s neck, rubbing over an old tattoo of an eye, pressing down slightly at the pupil. Gerry huffs a breath into his lap and turns just enough to look at him. “Hi,” Martin says.
“Hey.” Comes the soft reply, warm and fond.
Martin would very much like to kiss him, but that would require a level of flexibility he’s never possessed, so he settles for bringing his own hand up to his palm and kissing the center of it before setting it back down lightly over Gerry’s mouth. He can feel the smile tugging at Gerry’s lips before his palm is being kissed in return and Martin brings it back up to his mouth. “Tea?” He asks after finishing the ritual.
“Christ,” Jon says, letting his papers and pen fall onto the small table at his side. The pen jumps at the small shock and rolls off onto the floor. “Please? If I don’t take a break I may actually start pulling my hair out.”
“Well we wouldn’t want that.” Martin says.
“Mmm, I don’t know.” Gerry says, tapping his finger to his chin as if in indecision, “Bald can be sexy. I seem to recall a time when you shaved your head and it didn’t look that bad.”
“Oh?” Delight suffuses through Martin like honeyed sunshine, “Now that’s something I would have loved to have seen.”
Gerry’s face lights up and he sits bolt upright. “Wait here a second,” he says before hopping off the couch and bounding toward the bedroom. There’s a loud crack, like the door has banged off a wall, and then the sound of things hitting the floor in a hurry.
Martin looks over at Jon, bewildered, but Jon just gives a helpless shrug, looking just as lost as he feels. He’s about to get up and go see just what the hell Gerry is doing when he comes tearing back into the room, clutching something in his hands.
“Look!” He crows, clearly pleased with himself, and hands out a book to Martin.
It’s not very large, about the size of a standard journal, and bound in worn, brown leather. The front of it is scuffed, the top corner bent inward like it’d been stepped on or stuffed somewhere and left like that for a long time, forgotten. “What is-“
From the chair he hears Jon say, “Is that-“
But Gerry drowns them both out with his plea of, “Open it!”
So Martin does.
Inside the front cover is a mess of pen drawings and doodles. A stylized eye, a moth, an anarchy symbol, a middle finger, half of them overlapping and the lines blurring. There’s a burst of black in the top right, a dark blot like a burst pen. In the center of the mess are big blocky letters, all caps.
PROPERTY OF GERRY KEAY
Below that, in a much smaller font that Martin can only decipher from years of recognition and practice.
and Jon Sims.
Martin looks up at Gerry who just grins and flops back down on the couch next to him, pressing hard up against his side like he’s eager to watch. Martin flips to the next page.
There’s a polaroid taped to the center, two young boys staring up at him with twin grins of mischief and joy. The boy on the left has chestnut brown hair cropped short. His mouth and hands look sticky and stained a bright red, the likely cause of which being the ice lolly stick still clutched in his right hand. The boy on the right is much smaller, with unruly black hair and red stains on his button down shirt and a matching red mouth. At the bottom someone had written in a tight, cursive script ‘Gerard and Jonathan, August 1999.’ Someone had drawn an ice cream van on the bottom of the page. At the top, in Gerry’s capital letter font, were the words PARTNERS IN CRIME.
The following pages are similar, photos taped onto the pages, sometimes overlapping each other. Some were clearly taken by Jon’s grandmother - the two of them dressed in suits for some function, the two of them sitting at a table and studying, the two of them asleep in the backyard. Others were clearly taken by the two themselves - Gerry smoking a cigarette and flipping off the camera, Jon holding a bottle of beer, Jon reaching for the camera and looking angry, Gerry riding a skateboard, Gerry on the ground with his skateboard upside down next to him. Some of them held commentary - WE LOOKED LIKE TWATS we were eleven!, Gerry has never once landed a kick flip HEY!!!!, we stayed up waiting for the meteor shower, BEST MATES FOR LIFE. Even more held doodles - ocean waves crashing against a rock, a pair of doves, zig zag mazes and tic tac toe, a lit cigarette and a bottle of beer.
“Ah-ha!” Gerry exclaims when Martin is more than halfway through the book, jamming his finger down at the picture taped there.
Martin jumps and looks at him.
“I knew it was in here,” Gerry says smugly.
By this point it looked as if Gerry had already started dying his hair black and growing it long, almost past his shoulders. His eyes were rimmed in black eyeliner and he had at least two piercings that Martin knew hadn’t come with parental permission. Next to him was Jon, hair buzzed down to his scalp and scowling impressively at the camera, wearing a too large leather jacket and a t-shirt for a band Martin had never heard of.
“Oh!” Martin says, grinning, “It looks so good!” He looks up to gauge Jon’s reaction, maybe even tease him a bit, but the words die quickly in his throat.
Jon’s looking right at Gerry, his face a mass of emotions that Martin is at a loss to try and describe. His eyes look wet.
“Jon?” Martin asks, concern tugging away his amusement and leaving it raw.
Gerry’s head snaps up, his own smile rapidly disappearing in the weight of Jon’s gaze.
There’s a long moment where none of them say anything and the room is stifling from the heat and tension. Martin looks between the two of them, trying to piece together what on earth could possibly be wrong, but he’s coming up short on pieces to work with.
It seems like forever before Jon finally says, “You kept it?” The tone of his voice is raw and brittle.
Martin very gently closes the book and sets in down on the coffee table.
Gerry’s mouth opens and closes a couple of times, confused noises eeking out like the squeaking of a rusted hinge. He seems almost as lost as Martin is. Finally his words take shape and land on, “Yes? Yeah, of course I did. Why wouldn’t I have?”
Jon’s eyes flicker away, to the oscillating fan and then to the TV kindly asking if they were still watching. He picks at a loose thread on the chair, fingers working anxiously. “I thought…after your mother- after you left- I thought that…”
Gerry’s eyebrows pull together, his lips tipping down into a frown. “What? Did you think I’d thrown it away?”
Jon shrugs, first one shoulder and then the other, like the collapse of a building. “Just kind of...assumed.” His hands were wringing together now, picking at the skin gently and scratching at his wrist. “After the...after the funeral we weren’t really talking, and then you were just...gone. Thought maybe…” Jon shrugs again, this time lower, hunching himself down smaller, “maybe you didn’t want to remember.”
Oh, Martin thought distantly. Gerry’s mother, Mary, had died when he was only 16, apparently by suicide. It had been a sudden, violent thing that had sent Gerry’s childhood spiraling in a direction he couldn’t control. Less than a week from the time his mother had died, Gerry had been uprooted from the home in Bournemouth he’d always lived in and made to move in with a distant relative named Gertrude up in London. He’d barely had time to process any of it, let alone let Jon know what was happening. It was over ten years before they’d seen each other again, and the gap had always been a sore spot for both Jon and Gerry.
Gerry makes a choked noise and crosses the room in quick strides to kneel in front of the chair. He gathers Jon’s hands in his own, cradling them together. “No,” he says, so softly Martin can barely hear him, “Not you.” He brings their hands up so he can kiss the backs of Jon’s hands, brush his lips over the knuckles. “I never wanted to forget you.”
Jon’s breath hitches.
Martin watches Gerry hold Jon’s hands to his face and mumble something that he can’t make out. Jon’s fingers twitch in response and he huffs out a breath. After a moment he gets up and goes into the kitchen to make them all some tea, flicking the switch on the electric kettle and rummaging through the pantry to find the container of lemongrass tea that he knows Jon likes and the mint tea that Gerry prefers. It doesn’t take long, but he likes the ritual of it anyway. He gathers their two mugs in one hand, and his own mug of a spicy black tea in the other and heads back into the sitting room.
Jon has moved over to the couch, tucked under Gerry’s arm with the book in his lap.
Martin smiles and sets their tea down.
When Jon looks up, Martin bends down and kisses his forehead and then grins wider when Jon’s nose and forehead scrunch up.
“Okay?” Martin asks.
Jon waves at him dismissively but makes a grab for his shirt when Martin turns like he’s going to take the chair. “Yes,” he says, exasperated, “come here, please.”
Gerry squishes himself into the corner and pulls Jon closer to make room, so Martin sighs and fits himself in next to them on the sofa. It’s a cramped fit, but ultimately worth it for the way Jon relaxes against him, flipping absently through the book of memories on his lap.
“Gerry had a point, at least.” Martin says.
“Hm?”
“You looked good with a shaved head,” Martin says too lightly, “might be a good summer to try it again.”
Jon’s protests are drowned out by Gerry’s instant and joyous peal of laughter.
Jon says something about ‘nothing being sacred’, the tips of his ears burning, while Martin tries to hide his grin in his cup of tea. He almost succeeds.

Watchmen: SDCC Trailer Breakdown and Analysis
https://ift.tt/2StFskh
HBO brought a trailer for the Watchmen series to SDCC, and OH MY GOD.
facebook
twitter
tumblr
The world is full of Watchmen purists, people who believe the original comic is sacrosanct and inviolable, and that any attempt to follow it up is doomed to failure because it misses the point of the original. And then there are people like Damon Lindelof, who decided to make a Watchmen TV series for HBO because those people are clearly wrong and need to be shown the error of their ways.
Just in time for SDCC 2019, HBO has dropped a new Watchmen trailer, and it's our most revealing look at the mysterious show to date. It is also nuts you guys. There is so much in this that is shocking or gorgeous or incredible that we had to pick through it on your behalf, finding every easter egg or hint at the plot that we could dig up.
Did you miss the trailer? Here's your chance to watch it:
Video of Watchmen | Official Comic-Con Trailer | HBO
Okay, now that you're caught up, here we go!
THE BACKGROUND
Here's what we know about the world of HBO's Watchmen:
Tumblr media
It takes place after the events of the original story. In it, Nixon never stopped being President, and by the 1986 of the comic, the world was about to catch fire. The doomsday clock, which counts down how close we are to nuclear annihilation, was inching closer to midnight. A confrontation between a super-powered United States and the nuclear-capable Soviet Union seeming inevitable.
Tumblr media
The world was seemingly saved by Adrian Veidt, also known as the hero Ozymandias, who had kidnapped a bunch of scientists, had them invent a telepathic monster AND teleportation technology that didn't really work, then dropped the monster in the middle of Times Square so that it could connect to seven million minds and explode from the failed teleport. His reasoning was that an alien menace would force the world to unite, rather than destroy itself.
Tumblr media
This world had seen superheroes before - The Minutemen were a postwar superteam of mostly masked vigilantes who got together to fight crime. Eventually, masked vigilantism was outlawed, forcing the heroes to either operate illegally, become government stooges, or get out of the game.
Tumblr media
Dr. Manhattan, the only actually superpowered one out of the group, decided to do a little stooging and a little retiring. After the events of the original story, he retired to Mars.
THE STORY
Here's what we can tell from the trailer regarding this sequel's story:
Tumblr media
Rorschach died at the end of the original comic, killed by Dr. Manhattan because he was going to reveal the truth about Ozymandias's telepathic spaghetti monster to the world, nullifying its impact. In the new series, Rorschach is actually a bunch of people, reciting one of his most famous lines from the comics ("...they'll look up and shout 'Save Us' and we'll reply 'No.'").
Tumblr media
Regina King is a Tulsa cop, and it looks like the Rorschachs break into her house and attack her family as part of what seems to be an anti-police wave of violence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Rorschach gang attacks the cops, and the cops decide to fight back with masks of their own. With official sanction from their leadership - Don Johnson is Tulsa Chief Judd, giving the masked police their marching orders. And Regina King puts on a mask and kicks a metric ton of ass.
Tumblr media
Included in their number appears to be Tim Blake Nelson's Looking Glass, a new character for the show.
Tumblr media
The world also looks like it's seriously unstable. This is a pretty radical redesign of the flag (though it has the same 50 stars on it - I checked), and you don't suddenly have a crazy libertarian militia group spring up if everybody's happy.
Tumblr media
Contrary to reports, Veidt is still alive but is set apart from the other characters based on the trailer.
Tumblr media
So is the Silk Spectre - Laurie Blake, taking her "father's" name and working for the FBI on the mask murders in Tulsa.
Tumblr media
An amnesiac Hooded Justice, one of the original Minutemen who was widely regarded to be a Soviet spy before his death in the '50s, also appears in an in-show documentary.
WHAT REMAINS AN UTTER MYSTERY (and some conspiracy theories)
Tumblr media
There is something else going on throughout this trailer. It seems like the bulk of the story is going to focus on the cops vs. Rorschachs, just based on the burn they get in the trailer, but there are two other stories floating around in the background: some ominous, looming, larger threat, and what the hell happened with Ozymandias and Dr. Manhattan.
Tumblr media
At some point, Jon leaves Mars. He blows up his castle and disappears.
Tumblr media
And Veidt (who was the character the pirate story in the comics was referring to) is on some sort of luxurious estate arrest?
Tumblr media
There is a reference to a vast conspiracy made by this guy, who I can't identify, but miiiiiiiiiight be Rorschach's psychiatrist and therefore someone with access to his diaries and theories of what was going down at the end of the book.
Here's some other random stuff that looks awesome nonetheless:

But ultimately the best part of the trailer is the loading up of symbolism. Breaking eggs to look like the smiley face button is like a flashing neon sign.

If Rorschach represented the malleability of superheroes to be what you wanted them to be, I bet Looking Glass is their ability to reflect on you whatever you want them to. Rorschach was, in the comics, eating straight out of the can whenever he was shown eating, so this seems like a deliberate parallel.
Tumblr media
"Raining squid" is very biblical and very out of line with the rest of the trailer, but it makes sense, preceding...
Tumblr media
Dr. Manhattan's return!
Here's my theory: the show is a direct sequel to...the movie. That taxi ad looks a LOT like Matthew Goode's Ozymandias from the film version. Making it a sequel to the movie also makes it a sequel to the book because the movie could not have possibly been a more literal adaptation of the comic (making it both a faithful adaptation and the pinnacle of missing the point in human history).
The whole point of the book was to take apart superhero comics and poke at their absurdity as morality plays. That's what the end of the book is - Rorschach's journal gets sent to the New Frontiersman and picked up by a chunky dude dripping ketchup on his superhero shirt. Comic Book Guy is about to judge the hell out of the story (incidentally, has there ever been a time when Moore wasn't FULL of contempt for his readers? I don't think there was).
The greatest failure of the movie was to make itself a literal adaptation of the source material and not use it as an opportunity to provide the same commentary on the ballooning superhero film genre (only maybe without the contempt). Lindelof is really good at what he does, so I'm betting he's using this metaverse and these characters to tell a story that's as culturally relevant and blasphemous towards his medium as the comic was.

Interview with Trevor Noah
What were your expectations when you took over as The Daily Show’s host right before the election?
I don't think I had much foresight into what it was going to be. I often said that I thought Donald Trump was winning but I don't think I had an idea of what that world would become. I didn't know what world I would be thrust into. If anything, I was spending more time focusing on getting used to the running of the ship, figuring out how to run a show, learning how to implement my ideas, figuring out what to keep from the old and what to create of the new. And that's really what I spent most of my time doing so essentially the campaign I've now come to realize was a lead-up to a real launch of the show from the conventions into the election and inauguration.
The thing Jon and I talked about: he knew more than most people that that's what the Daily Show needs. You need to start around an election because you begin a journey with an audience, you begin a story. And so a lot of people do it the other way around -- don't start something new during an election. But I guess Jon understanding from his past how the Daily Show kicked off during the conventions, how it started making a name for itself during that time. He knew better than anyone what space the show thrived within. That was me just trusting him. He said just take this and run with it, it may turn into something, it may not. This is the best shot you can have of creating something new and having a narrative that is truly yours to work within.
The Daily Show is a longtime institution. What do you feel like sets the Daily Show apart from other late night shows now that everyone has gotten political?
There's a distinction between them saying something about politics and them becoming political. That's a broad line that many people don't cross. I don't think Corden sees himself as political at all, I don't think he's trying to be political; but when you have a President who is as pervasive as Donald Trump is everyone's going to speak about him the same way everyone made jokes about George Bush. But the level of joke and level of discussion changes from show to show and the perspective changes as well. So what separates our show from other shows is what we're doing and how we're doing it and why we're doing it. John Oliver may touch on a Donald Trump story but I know he's gonna go into dialysis and he'll talk about what's wrong with the blood transfusion industry and then he's going to tell me about insurance providers because that's what John Oliver does. But he understands that he's in the world and so he'll comment on it. The same thing goes for Stephen Colbert; he'll do a monologue on the news, he may dabble in that, but looking at what we can and cannot say is also what separates us. Colbert has limits because he's on network, we have fewer because we're on cable. So how we break it down, why we break it down, becomes what separates us. And that's essentially business at the end of the day. Your product offering. Anyone can sell phones, the question is why do you want someone to buy your brand over somebody else's?
How do you cope with such an intense, pervasive news cycle – where everything is a joke?
I don’t. I enjoy it and I use it as the propellant for the rest of the headline. I see this as a gift. If DT gives you the joke, you get to spend your time on the policy. If it were all policy, you’d have to spend your time finding the joke. Because DT gives you all the jokes and the administration is such a comedic affair with Sean Spicer and Kelly Ann Conway and all the characters we’ve grown accustomed to. We dig into it. We give an opinion on it. We put our flag in the stand and say “this is where we stand on this issue.”
Do you consider yourself more of comedian or journalist or both? I don’t consider myself a journalist because that for me minimizes what a good journalist does. I rely on journalists to do my show; I’m reading the work of David Fahrentold and Maggie Haberman. I’m reading and I’m learning from that world. If it weren’t for them I wouldn’t know anything. Journalists are doing the work of journalism. There’s confusion sometimes between punditry and journalism; a pundit is willing to parrot an opinion on the news. I don’t see myself as a journalist because they put in hard work on a story and develop sources and figure out what the narrative is. We break a story down and interpret it. We’re comedians who work in the space of news and politics.
Do you think comedians keep politicians honest?
I don’t know if we keep them honest; I think that’s changed. I think shame is gone and hypocrisy is no longer a tool that has the same effect. It used to be that if you showed a politician they said something in 1999 and then said the complete opposite now, it used to be strong enough to make them hang their head. Now, many politicians are coming to understand that if they act with impunity no one holds them accountable. A lot of their voters have shown they care more for the end result than for the pageantry and illusion of pride.
What do you think about the collapse of that decorum?
It’s a horrible thing. That used to be one of the tools you could use. You could say “this is what you said; can we hold you accountable?” Now they just say “don’t worry about it.” With Trump’s tweets, they say “don’t worry about what he says, worry about what he does.” They’ve gotten to a place where they realize they don’t have to answer for anything, they just have to dig in behind Donald Trump and let everything fly over their heads. A lot of people say that this political uncertainty is good for comedy.
I’m always wary when people say it’s good for comedy. I existed before Donald Trump and will exist long after he’s gone. It may be good for late night satire and political commentary. The focus shifts. People watch for different reasons. Right now if you are someone who is political, then this is a time when you have a lot to chew. There’s al ot to say something about. It’s more that people are now interested in it. People were talking about income inequality before Donald Trump, but there may not have been a villain to focus on. It’s good for activism.
How does your childhood in South Africa influence your perspective?
It’s always been part of my comedy. I’ve always enjoyed providing context for my life. It’s more apparent because I come from Africa. Jon Stewart used to always joke about coming from a Jewish family and no one ever said “you tell a lot of jokes about that.” But I come from the land of Mufasa so it sticks out if I make an Africa joke.
I’ve always enjoyed it as a competitive edge. It goes back to the question: what separates us? As a show, we try to be as authentically open to the genuine experiences of the people that are being most affected by what is happening. So when I see something happening affecting Muslims, I don’t guess or project or try to imagine how it must feel. I ask my friend Hasan – as a Muslim person, how does it feel? Then we talk about that as people. When I’m watching footage of black men being shot down in American, I can to a certain extent understand it but I still turn to Roy on the show and go “hey man, what’s it like for you?” The same thing goes for women’s issues. It’s not tokenism, it’s genuinely asking. The same way we look to Senators reforming healthcare and ask “where are the women?”
I think that’s what separates us. The show doesn’t have one voice. The show has an anchor that guides the voice in certain directions, but the show has multiple voices that use it as a platform. That’s what I enjoy about it.
You seem to have a calm wisdom about all this – while a lot of other hosts like John Oliver and Stephen Colbert seem to be freaking out. Do you get fatigued by all the coverage? It’s #WhitePeopleProblems. I think for a white person Donald Trump coming into power is such a shift in their world and thinking of how safe they feel. I hate to say this but as a person of color this is not a big jump in comfort. After the election, Roy and myself and all the other black people in the building were like “are you afraid? Well no, it’s kind of the same.” There hasn’t really been a seismic shift for us as it has been for many liberal white people in America.

The Onion's chief: Nothing funny about taking away kids from parents
New Post has been published on http://funnythingshere.xyz/the-onions-chief-nothing-funny-about-taking-away-kids-from-parents/
The Onion's chief: Nothing funny about taking away kids from parents
Over the past 20 years, Chad Nackers has seen the rise of hypocritical statements, those irony-free assertions in which the entire universe yells, “That sounds like a headline from ‘The Onion’” — but isn’t.
The Onion’s editor-in-chief has always tried to mix the straight yuks with the knowing punch of satire, a similar challenge to the nation’s editorial cartoonists.
“We haven’t really changed anything we do,” Nackers said in an interview Monday, “but the world has been much crazier and absurd, and that’s what people should be worried about.”
Like Rob Rogers, the well-respected Pittsburgh Post-Gazette cartoonist fired after criticizing Trump, Nackers sees little humor in the Trump administration’s separation of children from their parents along the border. (Editors’ note: The Monday afternoon effort just hurts).
“There’s nothing funny about what’s going on,” Nackers says. For The Onion, that means “it’s a satirical commentary on things, rather than ‘let’s laugh about it.’”
One of its most cited examples of such biting commentary is the headline (below) that The Onion has used after every school schooling since 2014.
“Part of the reason for the repetition,” Nackers says, is that “nothing is changing, so you’re getting the same headline.”
God forbid if you are in The Onion’s sights.
Last week, Nackers loosed the hounds on Facebook, with which The Onion built an audience of 6.5 million — now only actually accessible if The Onion pays Facebook to send it to The Onion’s fans, Nackers says. That “betrayal” of loyal customers, Nackers says, comes as Facebook sold out America in the 2016 elections to the Russians “for such little money, in Facebook terms.”
On Thursday and Friday, the site published about a dozen “articles” about Facebook, including one written in the perspective of Mark Zuckerberg’s daughter:
On Monday, Nackers launched an interactive piece called OnionSocial.com, with requisite articles touting the site’s world-leading popularity, genital recognition software and a 15-year-old MIT dropout CEO who, The Onion claims, is now dating Zuckerberg’s wife.
Nackers says he has not heard from Facebook. Frankly, he said, he’d rather train users to go to theonion.com or subscribe to its newsletter.
The newsletter can give you the latest headlines and presents it like a mini-publication, he said. Upon reflection, he added: “I’d rather just put five of them out every day.”
Quick hits
IT’S HIS: Billionaire Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong spoke to the Los Angeles Times newsroom after the deal with Tronc closed on Monday, announcing that Norman Pearlstine would be the executive editor. Pearlstine, a former top editor at Time Inc., Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal, had been consulting with Soon-Shiong since April, researching the paper and meeting 70-some current and former staffers. The previous editor, Tronc’s Jim Kirk, chose to leave rather than take a lesser job at the paper. Jeff Light will remain publisher and editor of The San Diego Union-Tribune.
TRONC FINALLY REALIZES IT HAS A STUPID NAME: That’s the New York Post headline on the company’s decision to return to its previous name, Tribune Publishing. (At least it’s not IHOB.)
BACK ON AIR: At first his voice diminished to a squeak. Then it was gone entirely. Cox reporter Jamie Dupree had been working on the radio since the Reagan administration but suddenly couldn’t speak. A text-to-speech technology company crafted a new voice for Dupree: software that turns his typed sentences into spoken words. And it’s similar to his old voice; the company used audio recordings of his work to create it, the Associated Press’ Brinley Hineman reports.
BOOST OR BOOSTED?: CJR reports some complaints about Facebook’s Community Boost conferences.
BETTER LIFE LAB: Economists say the way we work has become so stressful it’s the fifth leading cause of death. How do we get better? That’s the purpose of a new Slate podcast by Brigid Schulte, the author of “Overwhelmed,” a former Washington Post reporter and now director of the New America’s Better Life Lab. Although work is so stressful and conditions are often hazardous, few want to change it and “no one wants to quit,” James Pfeffer, a Stanford business professor, says in the first episode, which came out Friday.
WHY SO WHITE?: A review has found 750 charter schools with a pupil population that is far whiter than the district itself. Loose laws, writes Emmanuel Felton of the Hechinger Report, let scores of the publicly-funded charters create policies that favor white students. Those policies include items as prosaic as only allowing for bus transportation from white neighborhoods, Felton found. Editors: Is that the case in districts in your area?
What we’re reading
BOB DOLE’S FINAL MISSION: On Saturdays, the 94-year-old former senator travels to his usual spot: a shady place just outside the main entrance to the World War II National Memorial in Washington. From there, settled into his wheelchair, the recognition of him — and his service to the public — begins. By Steve Hendrix for The Washington Post.
VOTING FOR A CHANGE: Sick of corruption and sick of Donald Trump, Mexico turns its presidential hopes toward Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a leftist maverick. Former U.S. Ambassador Roberta Jacobson says she is unclear what type of policy changes he will make, but his economic circumstances stand apart from his rich predecessor. After she was appointed in 2016, she first met him at his unremarkable two-story townhouse in Tlalpan, a middle-class district in Mexico City. “If part of the point was to show me how modestly he lived, he succeeded,” she told The New Yorker’s Jon Lee Anderson.
THE PHOTO THAT BROKE HIS HEART: Photographer John Moore is a veteran journalist, but still had to catch his breath after a moment when a Border Patrol agent moved his hands across a 2-year-old Honduran girl’s mom, who the U.S. would separate from her. The girl immediately began screaming. “I wanted to stop her crying,” The Washington Post quoted Moore as saying.
What we’re hearing
THE VOICES OF THE CHILDREN AT THE BORDER: This audio recording catches the sobs and cries of kids who have had their parents taken away in what Laura Bush has called President Trump’s cruel, immoral, heart-breaking policy. The children inside a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility are 4 to 10 years old. The person who recorded it “heard the children’s weeping and crying, and was devastated by it,” Ginger Thompson and ProPublica reported.

Streams new posts Search billions of WordPress.com posts… Suggestions: Happy Place, Life, Yoga. metacrone, Metawitches 10m ago metacrone commentary meta Frozen the Musical vs Radical Feminist Theatre I thought I was done writing about the Frozen live musical adaptation, but I guess I’m not. The thing is, both Metamaiden and I aren’t done thinking about it. The new song Monster, written by Oscar, h*ell, EGOT-winning songwriters, is stuck in our heads, telling us over and over that being a powerful woman is dangerous, that we should either leave and go live in solitude or, even better, kill ourselves, so that we don’t destroy our country and everything we hold dear. And that’s only the beginning. I, personally, like most adult women, am a sexual assault survivor, which I have rarely, if ever, talked about. (Probably also like most women.) The scene where Kristoff rips Anna’s dress off and forcefully throws it off stage, while telling her how stupid she is, was very triggering for me, especially after seeing it twice.* When I was young, I stupidly got into a car with two young men. One of them tried to rape me in the back seat. After several minutes, I was able to physically fight him off, but only because he was very drunk. The other man sat and watched. After I fought (and I do mean FOUGHT) the attempted rapist off, his brother took pity on me and dropped me at a pay phone. It never occurred to me to contact the police, because I knew that I had asked for this to happen to me by getting into the car in the first place, even though all I had been offered was a ride home. Notice I still think of myself as stupid for being trusting, rather than blaming them for being the violent criminal and his co-conspirator that they were. More than 30 years of the women’s movement later, this is what society still teaches women. This is what Frozen the Musical teaches women.
