So I saw the Super Mario Bros movie the other day and I have Thoughts And Opinions™ on a couple things (idk what counts as a spoiler but it's all under the 'keep reading' just to be safe) P.S.: Damn this got longer than expected 💀
First and foremost, we all know it's not a masterpiece. It's not meant to be life-changing, it's meant to be fun. It's meant to entertain kids who have little to no knowledge of the Mario Bros games AND avid Mario fans at the same time, and I think the movie managed to do it pretty well.
I've read a few comments saying they didn't like the pace, that it was weird and fast. Y'all. That's how you keep a kid's attention. Hell, that's how you keep MY attention (as someone with ADHD). It's colourful, funny, and has great upbeat songs that had the whole theatre smiling and doing little dances in their seats and even singing along! And most important: the kids were DELIGHTED, they weren't talking or walking around out of boredom AT ALL, they were completely engrossed in the movie, we all were.
And now that I've made clear I liked the movie a lot, let's move on to less favorable opinions, random thoughts and such.
They better be making a Luigi centric movie soon because what the fuck was that. Yeah I get the Main Character is Mario but you can't have Luigi 'disappear' from most of the movie AFTER BEING IGNORED BY HIS FAMILY AT DINNER. "He was a prisoner" well have him try to escape or something! I don't care! I just need him to be appreciated!
Also we know Mario trained but... when did Luigi learn how to fight for the final battle? [New headcanon unlocked: Luigi is a natural at fighting but tries to avoid it at all costs because he's scared]
Loved Princess Peach, what a girlboss. Would've liked to see her girlbossing even more but yeah. Chef's kiss.
MARIO AND LUIGI. Their relationship, how they care for each other, how fucking happy and relieved they are to be reunited I just-- flawless, perfect, incredible, 100000/10.
Bowser just wanted to be happy okay? I know that's not how one does things but... he was trying. I'm sad now.
Also Bowser's hot and the voice they've given him in Spanish was a great nice amazing surprise.
Blue Shell Koopa has a place in my heart now.
The Luma is Gen Z.
Luigi saving Mario and joining forces for the final battle? Sharing the star? I teared up that was so GOOD. (Does not make up for the lack of Luigi in the rest of the movie but it's a good start.)
Still not over the cuteness of the second post-credit scene.
Loved the bowuigi scenes, didn't know that much bisexuality could be conveyed in so little time. Another win for the community. Hey Nintendo I've got a few ideas for a Bowuigi movie if you're interested.
The DK & Mario scenes are phenomenal and there aren't enough words to describe how perfect their conversation inside the eel was.
If you got this far, thank you for reading my nonsense! I hope you have a very nice day and you're more than welcome to comment/reblog with your own Toughts And Opinions™. This movie has me in a chokehold.
It has also given me ideas to continue the Bowuigi fic. Win-win.

Ideas for a potential (and ideal for my tastes) Kirby Party game!!
This'll be long, obviously, so I'm leaving everything under the cut.
At its core, the game is a literal copy-and-paste of classic Mario Party. Everyone moves around the board, gathering more of a select item than their competitors to win, with minigames sprinkled throughout. No differences there. The difference comes from what the objects are, in this case.
On the topic of stars:
Here, stars are replaced with food items, given out by Kawasaki who replaces Toad. Whenever Kawasaki is moved, through any means, he prepares a new, unique food item.
When you get to Kawasaki, you can spend 20 point-stars (the Kirby equivalent of coins) for whatever he offers. Or you could spend 25 point-stars to get a different food selected at random.
Why does this matter? Because you can eat these food items for special bonuses, offering a nice helping of strategy to the established norm. Eating them means you lose a point, however, so it should be used very carefully to be effective.
Outside of those, at least one food is offered that has no stat effects and is just your bog standard.
On the topic of items:
Originally, I had planned for most of the items to come straight from Mario Party 2, but after looking more closely into the item system of Parties 5-7 (mainly 6 because it serves as another big influence on the project), I fell in love with the nuance and strategy that could be employed.
With that in mind, I was thinking about revamping the item system and number of items to better fall in line with this style. However, I'll still share the old item lineup, just for personal reference:
Wheelies act as mushrooms, letting you roll two dice blocks, while Rex Wheelies let you roll three.
Warp Stars act as, well, Warp Blocks, letting you swap places with a random player.
The Dimension Mirror allows you to move backward along a board when used. (And this will be more costly, so as not to be absolutely broken like the Reverse Mushroom was.)
The Vat-luck moves Kawasaki to a different space.
The Noddy Network calls Nightmare upon a player of your choosing.
The Enticing Cheese calls Daroach, while the Stinky Cheese prevents Daroach from stealing from you.
The Dinner Bell warps you straight to Kawasaki.
The Invisibility Stone lets you walk through alternate pathways.
The Nebula Chest steals a random item.
The Dueler's Sword... is self-explanatory.
On the topic of boards:
I conceptualized 12 main boards for the game. At the moment, they are:
Augmented Area (Technology-themed.)
Foody Feilds (Grassland, Food-centric theming.)
Corruption Cavern (Mining cave theme.)
Dusky Drawings (Spooky Mansion + Art theme)
Basalt Boulevard (Fire/Lava theme)
Royalty Ring (Castle theme)
Headstrong Honky-tonk (A casino in Merry Magoland.)
Galvanized Garden
Sanguine Sands (Western theme)
Mauve Mountain
Impeccable Iceberg
Nightmare's Nexus (Space Theme)
I may end up removing some of these, adding more, or changing a few of these ideas around.
On the topic of characters:
The roster includes:
Kirby
King Dedede
Meta Knight
Bandana Dee
Marx
Gooey
Adeleine
Ribbon
Magolor
Taranza
Susie
Elfilin
With the following making an appearance as non-playable characters:
Kawasaki (as the host.)
Nightmare (filling Bowser's role.)
Escargoon (who owns the bank.)
Daroach (filling in for Boo.)
Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright (who operate the day/night cycle.)
and other well-known enemies (who serve the other roles as needed.)
Each playable character will have a unique outfit for every board except for two. No one will have a unique outfit on Basalt Boulevard, and everyone will have a unique outfit on Nightmare's Nexus.
The character that does not have a unique outfit on the given board plays an integral role at the end if they lose, triggering a boss fight that acts as a final minigame (sort of similar to the boss minigames in Mario Party 9).
And that's everything I had! I hope you guys like my ideas!
Oh, and be sure to look out for the art I'll be making for this in the future. I've already made a few things for it, but they're all so old now that I feel like revamping them.

What are some of your koopalings AUs? Or Super Mario AUs in general?
Ooh Boy, be prepared for a VERY long post on this.
War-Torn AU: One of my personal favourites, this AU takes place in a setting where the Mushroom Kingdom and Darklands have been at war for several years. Mario and Luigi are considered the best fighters in the Mushroom Kingdom and their personal duty is to protect Princess Peach, as well as trying to work out how to defeat Bowser. Bowser himself is the evil yet charismatic tyrant of Darklands, who wants nothing more than the Princess’s hand in marriage. The Koopalings are his most elite soldiers and his 7 army leaders…but they’re still just children.
Undercover AU: One of my Koopaling-centric ones, the Koopalings are a group of orphans sent to the Darklands under the orders of a neighbouring king, King Rohan II, and were adopted by Bowser after he finds the 7 children on the streets. Their mission was to infiltrate the royal family from the inside and take the throne away from Bowser and Bowser Jr. After unsuccessful assassination attempt after unsuccessful assassination attempt, it always ends with the. Sing forced to start an all-out revolution early. The question is, do they get forgiven or not? That’s the fun part to work out.
Haunted AU: I based this one on the 19-year long disappearance the Koopalings had from the mainstream games after Super Mario World and worked it into a fictional story. Basically, 19 years ago, Bowser’s adopted children, the Koopalings, went mysteriously missing and, not long after, their ghosts started haunting the castle. Boos were one thing, but just having the ghosts of your former children wandering the castle was too much for Bowser and his troops, so they left for a temporary alternative. This AU mainly revolves around Luigi being hired to ghost-hunt them and questioning his own morals the entire way along, as well as various scenarios that could have led to their death (AUs within AUs basically)
Reverse AU: Ah yes, the good ol’ Swapped AU as it is commonly known. The world stays roughly the same, but everyone’s personality is completely changed to be the canonical opposite. Therefore, you’d have Soft Bowser, Childish Ludwig, Austere Lemmy, Pacifist Roy (he’s great fun to write), Bully Iggy, Sweet Wendy, Smart Morton and Quiet Larry, all of whom are under the care of Idiotic Kamek. Oh, and don’t forget that Peach loves Bowser, Luigi is a fearless bad guy and Mario is constantly kidnapping Princess Peach.
Evil Mario AU: Let’s face it, most Super Mario fans have the token Evil Mario AU and I’m no exception. As someone who’s firmly on Team Bowser, it comes naturally to me to write Mario brutally beating up Bowser’s children and troops and trashing the Darklands as he goes, as well as him trying to coerce Peach to marry him and relentlessly bully Luigi. It comes in various amounts of extremism, but it’s very good for angst.
Human AU: The second typical AU, this is basically the same as mainline Mario except everyone is a human and I can make them hot. I’m a sucker for Human AUs and I’m not entirely sure why. I guess I mainly write this one because it gives me more to work with, like with outfits or injuries. ALSO, since they’re humans, it would be much easier to disguise themselves and go undercover in the Mushroom Kingdom 😈. This doesn’t have a lot of depth to it, but it doesn’t really need to, it’s just a little variation on normal Super Mario.
That’s all my main AUs. If anyone wants to suggest some more, I’d love to hear them. I think I might like AUs more than canon at this point because I can give people whatever personality I want.
Also, thanks for the ask! I love talking about my AU’s!

So earlier i put in the tags of a reblog about how i basically grew up on super smash bros machinima series. Which, firstly, why brand as machinima? Most of the ones I watched didn't seem to have a tie to that channel. Well, it could be that 'machinima' was used interchangeably with 'video game parody', but I digress.
Anyway, there was fwo series I remember above all else. Smash King, and SmasherZ. Both of which sound really bad out of context. Okay okay, but like??? They were pretty okay? Obviously were drenched in old internet cheese and laughable mic quality, but still good to me.
But like, to my memory they both hold up as gold bars in my personal interest trash pile. Smash King by Tigura21 took very interesting approaches to its characters, playing off the established Nintendo faces, but in a different light. Given that even in-universe, they're all trophies of the characters, not the real deals. V interesting concept. Not to mention it??? Does a tournament story pretty well??? A good handful of ssbb machinamas had tournament centric stories. This is still a fighting game. But, the tournament became set dressing for the bigger fantasy politics that starts to entagle the gang after a while.
Only downsides I can remember are Meta Knight and Pit, given that their trophies' personalities are tacky, and would probably be called poor taste if they were made like that today. But what can you do with old internet media, huh?
And then there's SmasherZ by TheRollinNolan, a piece of utterly cursed nonsense I still think about and giggle. If Smash King took the serious approach to defining the characters separate from their faces, SmasherZ throws a metal chair at it. If I'm recalling correctly, Sonic the Hedgehog gets thrown from the game world into the rel world because he's framed for a crime by the bad guys who are trying to revive this all powerful Bowser recolor so he can translate fench. And it escalates! Fuck! This show is so fucking silly i cant- And even with that there's some pretty cool moments for everyone. Again, there's a bit of older humor, namely relating to a mr saturn that announces when gay people are born i cant even- but its still so fucking ridiculous to me. Its kinda short so like it won't eat up half your time watching.
And then you can yearn for endings that will never come with me. Because both of these are unfinished, and i need closure dammit!
Anyway this is why I'm uncultured

CASE SHOTSHOT STAGE4, aka THUNDERBOX’s Summer Collection 2017
… But first: Toco Toco’s season finale (I wasn’t aware that there was one in the first place) is here, and the subject is the man responsible for perhaps my favorite video game of all time? And maybe yours as well? It’s Tetsuya Mizuguchi…
youtube
Alas, the focus is squarely on the most recent iteration of Rez (aka my fave game). Was hoping it would touch upon his earlier work, in particular, Sega Rally. Older games are oh so briefly mentioned, with the role of audio being the primary emphasis. And even though it’s not a music game… holy sh*t does Sega Rally have an AMAZING soundtrack.
BTW, I’ve got game music on my mind because… will explain later! Also, the gifs above are courtesy of Prosthetic Knowledge, cuz they make them far better than I ever could.
Anyhow, it’s been a while since the last game culture round-up, hasn’t it? So long in fact that… there’s a new THUNDERBOX lookbook to, well, take a look at. Which actually just came out, so this particular round-up ain’t that overdue…

Whereas the HuCard was the hottest fashion accessory of last spring, summer will see this rather nifty take on the Sega Saturn Lightning Brain design (also, RIP 1CC shirts)…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s also a really nifty shirt, a collab with INC NOXXX SCREAMING…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
… plus a single Famicom cart holder/wallet…
Tumblr media
Along with LEBLANC GIRL, either on a shirt…
Tumblr media
… or as a pin…
Tumblr media
Back to INC NOXXX SCREAMING, real name Yozi Shimoda, who’s been grabbing my attention more and more as of late. Was going to share his latest shirt in the next Instagram dump, but no point in waiting right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sticking with fashion for just a tiny bit more; it’s been over three years, but the King of Games has finally updated their YouTube channel, and they now have a trailer?

Which video game-centric footwear do you prefer? These sneakers, based upon Sonic’s (via miki800)…
Tumblr media
… Or these sneakers, based upon the Super Nintendo, one that’s also running NBA Jam (via FreakerSNEAKS)…

As you may have heard, a new Super Famicom cart is going to be released later this year. Am talking about Kaizou Choujin Shubibinman Zero, originally released 20 years ago for the Satellaview.
Now, something that’s getting far less attention is how the same publisher, Columbus Circle, is also releasing a new Famicom game called Heiankyo Alien around that time as well (via tvgame)…
youtube
In other news, there’s a manga based upon Daigo Umehara, which you may or may not have heard about. Anyhow, UDON Entertainment has just revealed that it’s become translated and published in the West…
Tumblr media
Here we have a nice little piece from José Salot, one that’s simply entitled: “Gamer Room”; I really want that poster that’s on the wall, of the Famicom karts…
Tumblr media
And a somewhat similar scene, except it’s a girl playing games while in bed, and that girl also happens to be Sailor Moon (via sixteen-bit)…
Tumblr media
Check out these photos of a strategy guide, for that Godzilla game that came on a Dreamcast VMU, which I want to say pre-dated the release of the console itself (could be wrong, but am pretty certain; via jimpluff)…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And on a related note, here are some pics from a shmup supplement that accompanied an issue of Famitsu, way back in 1990 (via videogamesdensetsu)…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On another related note; which bonkers shmup flyer do you prefer? This one for Darius (via shmups)…
Tumblr media
… or this one for Space Bomber (via obscurevideogames)…
Tumblr media
It’s Mario and Bowser, adorning a nuclear command bunker, taken by NPR originally, that suppermariobroth recently re-posted it (if you want to catch glimpses of some of the other oddball Mario artwork that exists alongside, then watch this video)…
Tumblr media
And on that note, time once again to see some of the more interesting discoveries and observations that the Broth has made as of late. Including the actual note for the coin sound effect in the Mario games that Nintendo filed a trademark for only last year…

This photo of a scarier looking Mario with Wil Wheaton and his younger brother; apparently it was from a tournament where the Star Trek TNG star had the highest score among all the celebrity guests…

And this fascinating bit of intel…

“In one particular piece of official art for Super Mario Odyssey, Mario’s hair is rendered in great detail. Zooming in to the part above his ear, we can see what appears to be a single gray hair. This seems to be deliberate, as analysis of the image reveals that this is not a transparency issue, but that the hair is indeed colored a lighter color than the rest. Due to the image being released in a lossless format by Nintendo, this also could not be a compression artifact.”
BTW, I completely forget where I got the following. I may have blocked it out of my memory to be honest…
Tumblr media
Gizmodo recently ran an interesting piece about an astronomy student who strapped a Game Boy Camera to the end of a 179-year-old telescope to take pictures of the moon…
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, The Verge recently ran a story on Shawn Wasabi, that musician with a MIDI controller that has 24 arcade buttons, whom Eric and later myself wrote about over two years ago.
Though it reminded me that I hadn’t checked his YouTube channel in a while and totally missed the following, posted on this past Valentine’s Day. So if you haven’t seen it before either…

Sticking with musicians for just a bit; here we have a guy who plays music with a Famicom on his head, playing a game with a Famicom that’s on a table…

It’s funny how the Game Boy was essentially the video game equivalent to the Walkman, which someone would clone and make it resemble a Game Boy (and which Nintendo would officially sanction, according to nintendroid)…
Tumblr media
And speaking of music, by someone who goes by Motocross Saito…
Tumblr media
Oh, so at the very top I mentioned that I had game music on my mind… game music by Treasure to be exact. And that’s because, earlier this evening, I was a guest on the Video Game Grooves podcast! Where I was asked to talk about the just released Gunstar Heroes record by Data Discs. Alas, I didn’t get a chance to touch upon the music of Guardian Heroes, but at least I have this super cool gif by kyn…
Tumblr media
And finally, why yes someone has modded fidget spinners into Grand Theft Auto V, did you even need to ask?
youtube
Don’t forget: Attract Mode is now on Medium! There you can subscribe to keep up to date, as well as enjoy some “best of” content you might have missed the first time around, plus be spared of the technical issues that’s starting to overtake Tumblr.

Why We NEED Mario Strikers On Nintendo Switch Part 1
Super Mario Strikers please come to switch please bring your golden goalie glory to intend Oh switch what's going on raids active switch forest Gabe is here and after the recent announcement and reveal of Mario Tennis aces we got to thinking hmmm why hasn't the best mario sports franchise in been in action lately where has it been we haven't got a new one since 2007 what is going on and that is why we're here to talk about the king of the castle when it comes to mario sports the cream of the crop the Bowser to the boos the you know stylized snazzy sidekick stuff sports game that Mario has ever been a part of and it is the strikers franchise and it is a franchise that has done well Super Mario Strikers on GameCube sold 1.61 million back in Oh 5 you mentioned strikers charge came out in no 7 that sold 2.15 9 million so they're good sellers I just don't know why they don't make them as often as tennis and obviously this is a franchise that people want whenever we make a Mario Tennis mentioned they always say yeah but what about strikers and Zack I want you to tell me what your favorite part about this franchise is I think the best thing that they do with strikers both titles the original strikers in game view but charged on we developed by next-level games I think what they did so smartly here is they took the traditional Mushroom Kingdom cutesy bright vibrant nature and flipped it on its head they devised a whole new style and a whole new just look for the world and for the characters they outfitted Mario & Co in much more like sci-fi edgy attire they brought in all these elements that you don't traditionally expect from from the lore of the Mushroom Kingdom right it looks nothing like the Mushroom Kingdom I think that is so cool and at first blush and that pulls people in and look these are no slouches when they come to cells as you mentioned gabe they sold really well and they they just to be clear strikers charge was re-released as a digital download for Wii U in 2016 but there hasn't been a new iteration for nearly a I guess over a decade now which to me is is bonkers because this game does something super smart which is it takes the concept of soccer but then adds the elements of Mario and makes a unique in some ways better game that is still hardcore and gameplay centric they do not simplify things to the point of boredom they do not casual if I things to the point of just silliness it very much is a hardcore sports title but one that feels totally Mario if I'd totally Nintendo if I you know they added all these power-ups all these special shots they added the sidekicks you're able to craft your team and it really matters who you pick their powers are the powers that those enemies and those sidekicks have so when you use Berto you're gonna get her big egg when you use Buu you're gonna be teleporting around it is the perfect it's the perfect coming together it's like a concert of all the characters from Mario utilizing their god-given abilities to make this amazing sports franchise yeah and it's a game that you know switch thematically right play together play locally together absolutely perfect fit just like any other sports game would be on switch so I don't feel like this one stands out in that aspect but I have super fond memories of just like playing with my cousins of the original just like sitting there and taking turns and getting really really angry when you lost because that meant you had to pass the controller and the it's such a awesome experience that I wish I could replicate but yeah I feel like this with online play would be phenomenal like think about it Zack you being where you are me being where I am me just destroying you and this I think it would be a great time and since it's been gone for so long the modern things that we have now in gaming such as you know lobbies and matchmaking it's it can be introduced to the franchise and hopefully even people that are new Nintendo fans maybe got introduced with like what the Wii we know that we have a lot of young fans that have maybe never even played when these games because like you said 10 years at this point it's a long time yeah absolutely and person I'd be ok with a remastered re-release or a new entry entirely but I think it's important that they stick to the core of what makes this game special and that is it reminds me of Smash Brothers
