“Again…what is your point? You’re not making any sense! She was upset to come here to see about YOU! She’s been blinking back tears over YOU!”

“And that’s what bothers you! She would come to see about me but you wish it had been you. What if it could be you though? What if I could make it so you get your chance with her?”

I can’t sit back in good conscience and let her do anything here. I think I can disillusion her on my own, but I can’t risk anything with Maxey around. I can’t give Joanne that target!”

“Yeah, Joanne did call out Maxey already and Maxey pretty much shot her down. What about Matt and Russ? Why not talk this over with them and you and Maxey do something together? You’re talking break up with her and trying on your own.  It seems to me that you owe Maxey that much!” Rod crosses his arms but he wants to make a point.

“Matt would take this on as a fight he had to go through for her sake. Russ would do whatever he could as well, but they would both be around her even more than they are now. Besides as long as Maxey and I are a couple, Maxey might as well be wearing a bullseye on her back. That won’t work! I’m the one Joanne wants, so there is really no need to get all of them involved anyway. Right now, I mostly want you to protect her. Is that asking too much?”

“You want me to protect her? What happens when this threat is over? Am I supposed to just hand her over back to you? It doesn’t work that way, Dustin. I can’t get involved with her one day and totally turn it off the next. You’re right about one thing. I’ve dreamt of my chance! Being around her yesterday and today, I think I’ve fallen even more for her. But this is something she needs to have a say in. You don’t make this decision, she does!”

“Now where have I heard that before? Oh yeah, it was Russ and Matt before Russ slapped me. I get it! She does have the final say, but I feel I know her well enough to make her lean one way or the other.”

“Man, she is not a puppet! You don’t pull the strings and make her dance the way you want her too! You don’t want to be a toy, quit acting like she’s one!”

Dustin laughs to himself as he gazes at Rod. “You sound just like them! I guess I’ve made the right choice here then. Matt and Russ both told me she makes the decisions and she’s not some trophy for me to display. I didn’t think that I did that, but beside the point right now. Are you going to help me? If not, then I’m sure some guy out there will be more than willing to get his hands on her.”

“Alright! I can’t let just anyone get to her. What do you want me to do?” Even though the idea of having Maxey in his arms is appealing to him, he doesn’t like this plan. Still, he can’t sit back either if she is in trouble!

“Very good! Just be sure you take her home tonight. I will talk things over with her.”

“Don’t hurt her, Dustin! She’s already had quite the day.” Rod shakes his head.

“Not to worry, I’ve got an idea. I’ll be gentle!” Dustin says. “Just send her in and I’ll take care of things for now.” Rod goes to the door and tells Maxey that Dustin wants to speak to her. She smiles when she sees him and his heart sinks. He is in love with her but he can’t stand the idea that something might upset her now. Would she really accept him? He was no Dustin and he could never compete with Matt.

“Yes dear? You wanted me for something?” I say once Rod finally lets me back into Dustin’s room. Dustin has that irresistible grin on his face! He pats the side of his bed for me to sit down. When I do, he puts his arms around me and says for me to let him hold me. I am so glad to be here like this! I thought when I watched him go to walk out that I would never be in his arms again. He pulls me down so I end up just about lying beside him.

“Dustin, the hospital could send someone in here any minute now!” I giggle.

Since he is so serious, I adjust so I am in the bed with him. He kisses me tenderly and hangs on to me. Something is really messing with his head. He seems torn to say this. “Maxey, I want you to know I love you, but I think we need to call things off between us.” HUH? No, I couldn’t have heard him right! He sees the look on my face and he continues. “Darling, this just isn’t going to work between us. My past is coming back to haunt me and I have to keep you away from that! Now, I’ve thought about this and I think it’s best we make a clean break right now.” He hugs me but I’m in shock. He can’t mean this!

MISTREAT MY PRINCESS?

Watching Maxey leave with Joe was a bit funny to me because I saw how she looked. She always likes a challenge! Alejandro didn’t seem to see things that way though. He is so wrapped up in his image of her; I don’t think he truly sees HER.

I worked for the most part until Derek knocked on my door saying she had returned. It’s a good thing I showed up when I did! That Alejandro is just making such a nuisance of himself. It took her a while to calm down after that little encounter. It shook her; the way he was looking at her, though I did try to erase some of it, but she’s always the trooper….she still told me what she thought of her chat with Joe. Seems she didn’t find out much more than we already knew but….we have to start somewhere, right? She left and I got back to work until Rod came in; however I did get a message from Russ saying that we needed to meet at the restaurant as our new monitor system was supposed to be brought there.

“Hey Matt. Could I ask a small favor?” I’m sitting at my desk when he comes in.

“Nice to see you get straight to the point, Rod. What can I do for you?”

“Maxey wants to eat in the park but I have to get Celeste. I know she can do this on her own, but I would feel better if you could go with her.”

“Normally, I would love to accompany the Princess, but today, I have to meet Russ at the restaurant.”

“Oh I see…..OK. I’m sure she will be fine but I just wanted a lil extra insurance. She said she would go to the sandwich shop then to the park.”

I get up and come around my desk. “Is something bothering you? You don’t usually go telling everyone exactly where to find her.”

“I’m OK. It’s just….yesterday Gilbert told me that if I wasn’t careful, he would take her away from me. That stayed on my mind and I finally ended up telling her. She swore that could never happen, but I worry. What if?”

“No, c’mon Rod, have faith in her. She told you, so you have nothing to worry about.”

“But Matt, so many look at her and…..”

“They may look, but the same could be said for you as well. As long as you don’t give her a reason to look elsewhere, she won’t! She told me she is crazy about you and I see it in how she looks at you.” I lean against the desk.

“What do I do if she loses interest in me? I don’t know if I would have anything left…”

“Stop that! Maxey told you this wouldn’t happen so now you only have to believe her. You do, don’t you?”

“I do! Of course I believe her but I worry that doesn’t diminish the fact so many might try to take her away. I can’t fight the whole world!”

“Rod, no one expects that. How can I put this? Instead of trying to fight the world, keep her closer to you. Don’t worry about them and focus on her. I said before, you don’t give her a reason to look around and you will be the only one she sees.”

Rod laughs slightly. “You two seem to be reading from each other’s script. She told me that too. OK, I get it!” He shakes his head.

“All the more reason for you to listen to us, I would think.”

“Yeah, you get way too logical at times!” He laughs. Now he sounds like her!

“In all seriousness, the Princess adores you. It would take a lot for her to let you go and I think you would have to really push her away…..so don’t worry about the ones that envy you, OK? Prove why she’s making the right choice by staying at your side. Show her how much you love her and you won’t lose her!” By this time, we’re both walking back to his booth.

“I aim to do my best there. I’ve said it before and I mean it with everything I have, I will spend the rest of my life proving how much I love her!” His eyes shine as he says this and I have to say, even I am a little taken with him when he talks this way. Then again, she deserves nothing less. I really do want for these two to make things work for them. Upon our arrival though, she’s on the floor crying while Derek is trying to comfort her.

“Maxey, what happened?”

“Rod, I’m so sorry!”

“What’s going on?”

“Gilbert…..” Derek tells us what happened and Rod is beside himself to see her so upset.

“….Sounds like he may require a lesson on how to treat a lady….”  I tell them. Rod helps Maxey up from the floor but his anger is more than apparent as he starts screaming.

“….He can’t talk to Maxey like that!”

“Rod, calm down....” Not to worry as I do believe we will find this miscreant! “He will not get off scot free.” We shall see to that.

“Guys, please….I don’t want anything to happen because of me.”

“I assure you nothing bad will occur, Princess….” And before I realize it, I tell her I will take her home but only as far as the restaurant. She smiles and accepts. She should never be made to cry like that. Once I hug her and leave, I go in search of him!

I ask around before I’m told he’s in the washroom. Off I go and yep, he turns to see me and mutters “Oh great! Send in the cavalry!”

“Why whatever could that mean?” I’ll play innocent here.

“Come off it, Matt! You came in here because Maxey and Derek both went flapping their mouths to you. At least you can’t fire me!” He leans against the counter of the sink.

“What would they have to tell me? You’re right; I can’t fire you so really…what can I do about anything?” He’s almost admitting his guilt.

“There’s nothing to do. My talking to Maxey was a misunderstanding and you can’t say that it wasn’t. It figures you would be the one to come though. Rod’s too weak to even try to challenge me. He knows I’d beat him in anything he tried anyway! She’ll wake up one day and cast him aside….I’ll be waiting!”

“For him or for her?”

“Oh please! HER! I’ll take her before anyone else even knows! She’ll be helpless in my arms!”

“You seem to have thought this all out, except for one thing.” I’m snickering into my hand.

“What did I forget?” He straightens up with the question on his face.

“You don’t know her as well as you seem to think! You know, this whole thing is pretty laughable if you ask me!”

“She’s got you suckered in too, huh? Oh yeah, I remember the talk about you two, but you can’t hold a candle to me! Just sit back and watch, actor boy!”

“Ah! So bold and yet not at all very bright! I would definitely suggest you rethink your strategy if you consider name calling a part of your plan.”

“Why you! She called me a jerk and now you insult my intelligence? Why do you two think you’re better than me?”

“Oh I would never insult you! I don’t have to with your personality, or lack thereof, doing it for me. I will speak to her about her language if you so desire though. I’m sure she could think of a stronger word for the next time……IF there is one!”

“Listen you! You cannot keep me from her. I may have convinced her this time was a ‘misunderstanding’ but she will belong to me before I’m done!”

“No, you listen! You go near her again or make her cry the way you just did and I won’t be the only one you’ll have to answer to! That girl has been through more than you know about and I will not see her upset by some poor fool trying – and I do mean TRYING - to prove anything! I refuse to fall into your game of petty threats but if you try anything, you will regret it one way or another!”

“Pretty tough words from the gay guy who still manages to make the girls swoon….but can he back them up? Now there’s a question for you!”

“If I were you, I wouldn’t provoke me to find out! You won’t like your answer…” I feel my anger rising just looking at his smug face but I hear her words, so I ball my fist by my side.

“Will you two hold it down in here? You’ve got an audience outside and it’s not good for two guys to be yelling in the bathroom.” Dustin comes in, trying to quiet us.

“Great and now the ultimate pretty boy! UGH this day just gets better and better!” Gilbert throws his hands up.

“Whatever problem you have, Gilbert needs to be resolved before you bite off more than you can chew, got it?” Dustin sneers at him.

“Another one with the big talk and nothing to back it up! You two make me sick!” Gilbert crosses his arms and shakes his head.

“You really want to test me?” Dustin grabs his collar.

“Oooo scary!” Gilbert sarcastically says but I put my hand on Dustin’s shoulder.

“Gilbert, I wouldn’t push him, he’s already proven to take on any guy who tries anything where Maxey is concerned.”

Dustin looks at me. “He did what?” Then he turns back to him. “Just who do you think you are going after her?”

“What do you care, Dustin? Still bitter you couldn’t hold on to her yourself?” Gilbert pulls his lip at him just as Dustin punches him. It takes three to knock him out on the floor.

“I let her go, she didn’t get away from me!” he screams.

“Well, at least he’s already in the bathroom where we can clean him up again.” I mutter under my breath.

“Don’t start, Matt or I can show you the same courtesy.”

“I wasn’t. I was simply stating.” I put my hands up in front of him.

“What did he do to her? Is she OK?”

“She will be. Rod was comforting her when I left or rather he took over for Derek. Gilbert apparently got mad because she wouldn’t let him take her home. He seems convinced he can snatch her away from Rod.”

He turns to look at Gilbert on the floor. “Matt, promise me, you will not let him do anything else to her. If he tries, find me!”

“Are we handing out orders now, Dustin?”

“No, it’s not an order, it’s a promise! I couldn’t keep Jerry away from Maxey, but I will not let anyone else hurt her! Whatever I have to do, she will not cry over any other jerk hurting her ever again!”

I put my hand on his shoulder again. “Wait, you’re telling me you would do that for her? Why, I mean you practically gave her away?”

“Matt, I know a lot of guys want to say I couldn’t hold on to her, but the truth is I had to give her up. Joanne saw to that! If I had my way, she would still be with me and I would be the proudest guy on this planet! I gave her up to protect her but I suppose she does deserve someone better than I used to be. Think what you want, but I love her and I always will!” He turns back to face me. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Dustin look so sincere before. As a matter of fact, I didn’t think he could be unless he was the subject.
