The dutch windmills of Zaanse Schans. North Holland's Amsterdam region has a lengthy and fascinating history that reaches back to the late 12th century. The area, which is found in the western portion of the Netherlands, consists of a number of tiny towns and villages, including Marken, Hoorn, and Volendam.
Amsterdam, the nation's capital and largest city, began as a modest fishing community on the banks of the Amstel River in the late 12th century. By the 14th century, it had become a significant commercial and shipping hub after expanding quickly in size and significance. Due to its advantageous location at the meeting point of three significant canals, the city quickly established itself as a major trading center for items including wool, grain, and textiles.
The history of the Amsterdam area also included significant contributions from other villages and towns. In the Middle Ages, Marken, a small island in the Markermeer lake, was a well-liked fishing community. It was a significant hub for trade and commerce and was noted for producing salt and herring.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, Hoorn, a town close to Amsterdam, played a vital role as a harbor. It served as a crucial hub for the Dutch East India Company, which was in charge of establishing trade routes with the East Indies. Hoorn's reputation as a hub of trade and culture was also influenced by the wealthy merchants and shipbuilders who called the area home. Cape Horn is named after this Dutch city.
The fishing sector has traditionally been centered in Volendam, a little fishing community on the shores of the Markermeer lake. The village's attractive harbors, which are home to a fleet of little fishing boats, and traditional Dutch architecture are among its most notable features.
Due to its importance as a hub of trade and business, the Amsterdam region of North Holland has a long and varied history. Amsterdam has grown from a modest fishing village to a big city with a rich cultural legacy and a thriving economy. Marken, Hoorn, and Volendam, three nearby villages and towns that have played significant roles in the history of the area, are still well-liked travel and tourism attractions.
The Amsterdam canals are an Unesco World Heritage site worth visiting. And if you have the opportunity a tour around the area is more than worth the time.

Hoorn – De politie heeft zaterdagmiddag één persoon aangehouden voor een steekincident in een woning van een appartementencomplex aan het Betje Wolffplein in Hoorn. Bij het steekincident raakte 1 persoon gewond.
