Hello from Cordelia!! If you're still taking prompts, how about no painkillers available for Cody and Rex?
Six months and six days after Order 66, Rex found Cody and the irony wasn’t lost on him. Or maybe Cody found him. It didn’t matter; they’d found each other.
Rex was on another junk planet, the swamp world littered with broken Star Destroyers, searching for another machine that could find and remove his brother’s chips. He’d been at it for a week and hadn’t found a medical bay yet where the giant machine was still functional. He had people looking into a more portable option for chip removal, but this was what they had for now and he wanted to be prepared for the next time he found a brother. He didn’t expect it to be so soon.
It was slow going work getting to the med bays as the floor beneath you was constantly threatening to give way and you never knew when you’d run into sparking wires or aggressive native fauna. With all the creaking and groaning around him, it would be easy to miss an enemy sneaking up behind him, and miss one he did. If the floor hadn’t suddenly broken beneath his hunter’s feet, the blaster bolt he’d fired would have gone through Rex’s head instead of barely missing his ear.
Rex dove for the cover of the corridor just ahead and felt his heart stop as a familiar voice filled with hate called out “Halt, CT-7567!”
“Fat chance, Codes! You want me, come and get me.” Rex shouted back as he tore down the corridor towards the med bay, where he prayed everything still worked.
“There’s no point running,” Cody replied. “You’re surrounded.”
“I don’t know, Cody, all I see is you.”
“Backup is on the way,” Cody ground out. Apparently someone else wasn’t pleased with the Emperor’s new troops.
Rex was running for his life, which was fast in his opinion even if he was dodging blaster fire, but it’s no match for Cody’s speed. Which is rather unfortunate since Cody already had the easier job. The only benefit is it put Cody in stunning range.
Rex’s a little to busy trying not to get shot, running, and shooting behind him to hear much less nottice the tell-tale groaning of a floor about to give way until both he and Cody are crashing through brittle durasteel. When Rex comes to, he finds his blasters gone and Cody slumped on the ground not far from him, still breathing, probably concussed, and maybe stunned. Rex hoped he was stunned. It would make life easier until they got the chip out.
There’s no time to look for his or Cody’s missing blasters because Rex can hear stormtroopers shouting up in the distance above them. Using the wire from his blaster’s grappling mod, he tied Cody up like those nerf herders do in the holovids Ahsoka used to watch and slung him over his shoulder. Rex isn’t sure if the Force is with him or not because Cody does wake up, but the cable holds him. Doesn’t stop him from thrashing though.
It’s slow going. Cody managed to to twist out of Rex’s arms twice and valiantly tried to bite Rex when Rex picked him up again. That and the constant yelling made Rex wish he had something he could use as a gag.
The constant cries of “The traitor’s down here!” let the stormtroopers know they were both still alive. However, it was still a dangerous and slow trip down if you’re not keen to go crashing through several floors and these troopers weren’t eager to die in the name of following orders just yet. They’d be a while. Small mercies, Rex figured.
The stormtroopers are definitely much closer by the time they find the med bay. Everything still works, thank the Force, and the machine even comes with restraints. Rex tries hard not to think about why it would need them as he literally straps Cody from head to toe to the board.
“Traitor!” Cody hissed as he bit at Rex’s fingers as he tried to strap his head down. “Brother killer.”
Rex flinched at that. It’s true and it hurts that he couldn’t save Jesse and the others. “But I can save you now.”
Rex could hear the sound of boots on durasteel echoing down the halls now. A crash followed by muffled cursing tells him the decrepit ship has just bought him some more time. He took a moment to rifle through the cabinets and drawers in search of sedatives or painkillers and found none. The only thing he found was an old cloth rag, which served the dual purpose of giving Cody something to bite down on and to muffle his screams He looked back at Cody, who’s eyes flashed with anger, and simply said “I’m sorry.” Rex turned on the machine and sat down to watch.
Cody’s first reaction is fear. Being stuck in a giant machine like this on Kamino never meant anything good. Cody’s fighting hard, but it takes on a whole new level of desprateness when the scalpels come out. From where he sits, Rex can see the whites of Cody’s eyes, pupils blown wide. He can’t make out the words but he knows his brother is begging.
There’s a ful body flinch at the first and last cut, quick and precise and down to the bone. Blood flows freely for a moment, the copper smell mingling with the must, before the machine wipes it away and uses a clotting agent. The scalpel folds away and the saw comes out.
Cody stops fighting and begins to shake. He seems distant from it all but still scared. Like a soldier dying on the battlefield, and it occurs to Rex that Cody thinks he’s going to die.
Rex stepped closer, hoping Cody could see him. “Hey, it’s going to be alright. I’m just removing the chip, ori’vod. I’m sorry you’re awake for this, but you’ll be free soon, I promise.” He reached out and put a hand on Cody’s leg, deciding it surely wouldn’t mess the machine up, right? “Only a few minutes.”
The saw retreated, the small incension in the skull apparently completed. But when a small clamp touched his brain, Cody screamed. Rex swore the Force writhed right along with Cody’s body in pain and terror.
Rex squeezed Cody’s leg. “Hang in there, any moment now.”
Cody went limp as the clamp withdrew, chip in claw, and didn’t move as the bandage was placed over the incision and he was pushed out. He moaned as Rex swung him back over his shoulder. “I know, I know. But I’ll get you onto my ship and then we’ll find you some nice painkillers, okay?”
“Rex?” Cody croaked.
Rex couldn’t help but smile. “Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
“Good to have you back, brother. Think you can walk?”
------------------------------------------
It’s a long and fraught trip back to the ship and it still takes some fancy flying to get them out of there alive. Rex finally relaxed once they were safely in hyperspace but he still jumped when the door to the cockpit slid open.
“I thought you’d be resting.”
Cody dropped into the copilot’s seat. “I don’t trust my dreams right now.”
“Find any painkillers?”
“No.”
“Oh. Does it hurt?” Cody turned his head very slowly toward Rex and Rex winced at the tears running down his brother’s cheeks. “Right, dumb question.”
“What have we done?” Cody asked softly.
Rex slammed the ship into autopilot and scrambled out of his seat. “Hey, hey, that wasn’t your fault. I couldn’t fight it either.” He gripped Cody by the shoulders as great silent sobs shook him. “We’re going to be okay now. I promise.”
“But the Empire-”
“Is a problem for tomorrow. There’s still hope,” Rex promised fiercely.
“How?” The dark hollowness in Cody’s eyes chilled Rex to the bone.
“I found you, didn’t I?” Rex offered his hand and Cody clung to it like a lifeline, squeezing it to the rhythm of his pulsing headache. Rex ran a soothing thumb over his knuckles as he talked of all they had not lost and the beginnings of the freedom they fought to gain. And when Cody finally nodded off, he commed Gregor to let him know Cody had come home.
