The new areas in Stormblood are some of the most beautiful in the game thus far to me. In particular, Kugane was an instant favorite because it feels the most like a city to me. It feels populated and alive, and there's so much beautiful detail in its streets and shops and skylines.

i realize a lot of people in the xiv community might not know this, but the ao dai is not a qipao. it's a bit insensitive to wear the ao dai without pants (like, as in, at least jeans or leggings) b/c

1) we must be respectful/not conflate different ethnic styled clothes with one another, as it perpetuates orientalist ideas and attitudes, and

2) vietnamese players will see you and probably ask themselves where your pants are (confirmed from a close friend of mine who was tirelessly harassed on the first day the ao dai was released for validation to wear the ao dai out of cultural context)

if you're looking for chinese style clothes in xiv, such as qipao, you'll want to look at the "far eastern garb for women/men" or the "far eastern socialite's attire", for examples. if you're looking for japanese style or korean style clothes, they're available, too.

the thing is, mixing and matching east asian wardrobes contributes to this orientalist image of the far east. scholar edward said talks a lot about this in his 1978 book "orientalism", where it is summed up as:

"the exaggeration of difference, the presumption of Western superiority, and the application of clichéd analytical models for perceiving the 'Oriental world'".

there are lots of high fantasy tropes that feed into racist stereotypes and caricatures. just because ffxiv comes from the far east doesn't make it immune to perpetuating certain ideas or images uncritically - but that is an entirely separate discussion, if equally important.

to avoid creating characters and stories that feed into the negativity in this world, research and specificity are your friends. this doesn't limit one's creativity, but rather humanizes your characters and the world we live in.

ultimately, it's your adventure and your choice. whether you take the lore literally or as a suggestion is up to you. either way, i wish you well on your journeys throughout the radiant world of etheirys.

Pg. 25: Thandha Joiner's Pibianfu

Taking a different approach to Carpentry, this outfit from the Hyogan Gallery takes from the Doman style. 

Combining wintry splendour with traditional Far Eastern aesthetic, this entire ensemble is known as a “Pibianfu” - a special Doman garb composed of several layers.  The headpiece - simply known as the “Pibian” - is a vital part of this outfit as it designates the status of the wearer, be they artisan, noble, or even government official.

The Thandha Joiner’s Pibianfu blesses the wearer with the wisdom of a renowned Doman Carpenter by the name of Lu Ban, who was said to have ascended to godhood.  The icy artifact saw severs the aetherial bonds within the wood, and the resulting dust that forms is absorbed into the Himvat Mythril which composes the saw blade, empowering its aetherial signature while also mitigating the spread of errant specks of sawdust flying everywhere.

Doma makes its mark once more in the PiB Catalogue thanks to the ingenuity of the Diamond Sultan.  The Thandha Joiner’s Pibianfu is a wonderful addition to the haute couture realm, and a lovelier addition to a Carpenter’s wardrobe!  Any who gaze upon you in this as you create a woodworking marvel will undoubtedly come back for more.

day 9: style

From the journal of Estelle de Laussienne, 20th of the 5th Umbral Moon, 2 7A.E. I'm wondering now if the entire Dragonsong campaign wasn't a mistake. Perhaps, with some foresight, we could have relocated Tataru somewhere more temperate? More pleasant? I'm afraid that in her fervor to contribute to the Scions – and through both proximity and an otherworldly endurance – she has acquired all of the absolute worst qualities of the Crozier's tailors. With a buttered rum or two, she might find herself a match for the Hospitaliers' most miserable bedside manners. She is far too small to be able to tug me this way and that, and yet I'm subjected to her demands all the same.  That is to say, she is a wonderful tailor. Her studies have revealed the blossom of a real talent, and with the minimal fuss I might find with other seamstresses and launderers who don't have the stomach to tolerate the mysterious fluids and entrails an adventurer might find themselves covered in. I could ask for little more. And yet, if she jabs another set of bossy little fingers into my ribcage, I may very well seize her by scruff like a misbehaving cat and heave her straight into Kugane's wastewater canals.
