Produced by Philly Soul legends Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff at Sigma Sound Studios, “To Be True” is eight songs and 38 minutes long. In those eight songs, the group lands three top 10 r&b singles with “Where Are All My Friends”, “Bad Luck” and “Hope That We Can Be Together Soon” (featuring Sharon Paige). While Teddy Pendergrass is still the unquestionable star of the group, it is worth noting that he did not sing lead on all of the songs. In fact, Harold Melvin himself handles most of the male vocal parts on “Hope That We Can Be Together Soon”. This may be a reflection of the growing tension between Pendergrass and Melvin as the two disagreed over what share of the group’s revenue should go to its star lead singer. Teddy would record one more album with the group before leaving to pursue a solo career at the of 1975. “To Be True” was the group’s first #1 R&B album and its first to crack the top 30 on the pop album charts (#26). It is yet another classic in the Philly soul canon. The song was originally written for #Labelle (a trio led by #PattiLaBelle) but they never recorded it. Much like the issue with “#IMissYou" and #TheDells passing on it, the song's composers #KennyGamble and #LeonHuff gave the song to #HaroldMelvin & #TheBlueNotes, which featured #TeddyPendergrass as lead vocalist. In addition to the single release, the song was included on their eponymous debut album. #TWIMH
