11th Kongress der Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Notfallmedizin. St Emlyn's
Our conference report from 11th Kongress der Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Notfallmedizin @stemlyns Blog themes on trauma, cardiac arrest and research . #FOAMed
This month I was in Graz, Austria at the 11th Kongress der Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Notfallmedizin. Although EM is not a primary speciality in Austria it is very clear that there are many clinicians who are interested in emergency care. There is always an English only track and so I would defo recommend a trip out here if you want to learn about EM in a wider Europe and without a focus on the…

Buckle up people, ’cause it’s another post about millennials (and you have to buckle up ’cause you know how millennials love their safety). Below are 13 infographics outlining the way millennials — folks born between 1981 and 1996 — consume their booze, as well as how their drinking habits contrast with those of other generations.
1. Millennials spend less on booze than baby boomers, but are more willing to try new, exciting alcohol products.

2. Millennials really want to discover new liquor brands they can share with their friends.

— Avalon Thomas-Roebal (@AvalonTRPR) November 8, 2016
3. Seriously, millennials are way more exploratory with their booze consumption relative to baby boomers.

4.Millennials are also shifting popular drinking trends toward liquor and wine over beer.

5. But when millennials do drink beer, they really like craft beer.

6. And also “ice” beer, which is beer that has a higher-than-normal ABV.

7. In terms of liquor, millennials are digging on vodka.
But among all #Millennials, Vodka is the winner ! #HMP4 pic.twitter.com/GDW9gE9DSf

8. Although millennials also enjoy whiskey, and are helping to make it more popular.

9. When millennials drink wine, they spend, on average, about $11-15 on a bottle.

10. Millennials, especially male millennials, also really like rosé.
44% of Millennials in NYC drink rosé #wine 1 or several times/week as opposed to 34% of Londoners! Discover more on our website #VINISUD2017 pic.twitter.com/HGAfZ8ENgl

11. Millennial “fine wine” connoisseurs spend less than baby boomers on wine (yes, this is still a shitload of money).

12. But “fine wine” millennials are more adventurous when it comes to wine types they’ll try.
They’re less adventurous when it comes to #wine choice, but #GenX‘ers top #Millennials and #babyboomers wine spending according to @wineaccess report from a 10yr data #research on #US wine #market https://t.co/eqiTvl4XKz via @WineSocial pic.twitter.com/XNBY5AP1xt

13. Finally, slightly more than half of millennials choose weed over booze.

New Post has been published on http://engineer.city/humidity-probes-launched/
Humidity probes launched
The new Vaisala Humicap humidity and temperature probes HMP4, HMP5, HMP7, HMP8 and the Vaisala temperature probe TMP1 are part of Vaisala's Indigo product family and will complement the Indigo family members GMP250 series and the HPP272.
The newly launched probes share also functionalities like chemical purge and sensor heating. The HMP7 features also warmed probe technology, which enables accurate measurements highly condensing environments. All the HMP probes are equipped with the new Vaisala Humicap R2 composite sensor. It gives corrosion resistance to the sensor particularly in acidic environments. All of the probes are also resistant to dust and most chemicals, and their smooth surface is easy to clean.
The new Indigo family members are compatible with the free Vaisala Insight PC software, which allows convenient setup, diagnostics and field calibration. The probes can also be used without Indigo host device through Modbus protocol.    The first shipments of the probes are scheduled to start in December.

JC: Effect of Ascorbic Acid, Corticosteroids, and Thiamine on Organ Injury in Septic Shock. The ACTS Randomized Clinical Trial St Emlyn's #FOAMed
Back in 2017 the sepsis world had a rather strong reaction to a paper published by Paul Marik that suggested that a combination of steroid, vitamin C and Thiamine could cure sepsis. The data, published in Chest , was met with scepticism on social media(4,5,6,10,12,13) but also with interest in other circles perhaps due to the enthusiasm expressed by the lead authors (1,4).

Huge trial on TXA in GI Bleeding . JC: Halt! It's not time for TXA! Or is it? HALT-IT results @stemlyns @cgraydoc @CTU_LSHTM

If you’re any kind of emergency care aficionado, you probably worship at the altar of tranexamic acid (TXA). With data showing more favourable outcomes from its use in traumatic bleeding(1,2), post-partum haemorrhage(3), maybe traumatic brain injury(4), and potentially haemorrhagic stroke(5,6), it’s easy to see why. It’s a cheap, safe drug, and quick to give.
So what about…

It’s tough keeping up to date with the ever changing world of Covid19. Whilst we are all working hard at treating patients in the ED and ICU, we also need to try and keep up to date with new evidence coming out all the time. Our aim is to help you hold back the hoardes of papers that threaten your doorstep, and only allowing those worthy of your attention through. If you are in a rush RCEM’s Top…

JC: The Vitamins trial. Hydrocortisone, Vit C and Thiamine (Marik protocol - or not?) in sepsis. St Emlyn's #FOAMed #ccr20 @critcarereviews
You may remember the controversy about Paul Marik’s suggestions that a combination of Vitamin C, steroids and Thiamine (sometimes known as HAT1) is a cure all for sepsis. There were some rather dramatic claims that this combination would reduce sepsis deaths to zero, and that it is a simple yet safe panacea to sepsis.

JC: Lower GI bleeding guidance. St Emlyn's
JC: Lower GI bleeding guidance. St Emlyn’s
The management of the patient with apparent lower GI (gastro-intestinal) bleeding is, in my experience at least, somewhat variable. Unlike upper GI bleeding where the standards and expectations are reasonably well known1,2, the lower GI bleed patient in the ED seems to be managed at the whim however might be on call that day. This combined with the well trodden turf wars about who admits (or…

Aortic Emergencies with George Wills at #stemlynsLIVE
Aortic Emergencies with George Wills at #stemlynsLIVE
Back in late 2018 we gathered in Manchester for the inaugural #stemlynsLIVE conference. Our friend Dr George Willsgave a great talk on Aortic Emergencies. There are loads of great tips in here about diagnostics, medical management and how to manage the pericardial effusion. Personally I found this incredibly helpful and wished that I had heard it a few years ago as I, like many of you, have been…

JC: Intravenous fluid therapy in critically ill adults (review). St Emlyn’s
The use of Intravenous fluid therapy and the controversies around them have been a theme of the blog from the very beginning. From the early days when evidence increasingly pointed to the harms of starch based solutions1–5 through to one of our latest podcasts on the use of balanced solutions in children6, the use of intravenous therapies has been a core of interest, uncertainty and dogmalysis.

JC: Are we getting cosy on the septic SOFA? St.Emlyn’s
Identifying, treating and prognosticating patients who attend the Emergency Department with infective symptoms, is part of the bread and butter of an emergency physician’s practice. It’s important that we identify patients that will develop or are at risk of developing septic shock accurately and swiftly.  In the UK mortality from severe sepsis is 18.2-21%1.
Compare this to the widely accepted…
